Opis:
The aim of the research was to define the influence of agricultural terraces on slope erosion. There have been selected three plots located on the Greek island Ikaria. On the plots detailed geomorphological mapping was done, spatial relief models were created based on the measurements taken using GPS RTK, georadar profiles were made using RAMAC/GPR and the extent of destruction of terrace resistance walls was evaluated. In comparison with similar forms on other Aegean islands, Ikarian terraces are narrow and high. Their stability depends on: lihtology, slope gradient, height and spatial arrangement of particular terrace steps and the current way of their usage. It was acknowledged that the most stable are the forms created on crystalline schists and gneisses, whereas the slopes, which erode the easiest, are the terraced ones consisting of carbonate rocks. The obtained results indicate that on Ikaria similarly to numerous other regions the most significant factor facilitating erosion on the terraced slopes is the cessation of their agricultural usage.

Opis:
The article summarizes the results from the archaeological excavations in the town of high middle ages in central and eastern Bohemia. The group of excavated towns includes the important settlement agglomerations of early middle ages changed during high middle ages into royal towns (Čáslav and Chrudim) and the newly located royal towns (Polička and Skuteč) and the bishop’s town (Český Brod) and mining town (Kutná Hora) and small market-towns (Hrochův Týnec and Luže). The new pieces of knowledge about town fortifications and about the form and development of town houses and about everyday life were collected during rescue excavations made in last twenty years.

Opis:
Earthquake-related damage has been observed in the architectural substance recorded at the archaeological site of Marina el-Alamein on the northwestern coast of Egypt, reflecting seismic events with more widespread impact known from both written and archaeological sources in the immediate vicinity and farther out. Recent investigations in the ancient town, focused on a district in the northwestern part of the site, have uncovered more evidence of potential earthquake-related destruction in a small public bathhouse (H.39) and a building of still unspecified function (H.40) located further to the east. Apart from obvious wall cracking and floor decomposition, as well as evidence of violent fires (attributed at least in one case to the second half of the 2nd century AD), the author has also observed differences in wall construction techniques, possibly chronologically discrete, that could be explained by a desire on the part of the ancient builders to protect buildings against the effects of seismic shockwaves.

Opis:
The article touches upon the interrelations between the structural elements and the building structure in architecture. The aim of the work is to generalize the peculiarities of “midis” masonry formation and to reveal its influence in the evolution process of the structure of Armenian medieval churches by a comparative analysis of different characteristics. In the work: the development of three-layer “midis” masonry was systematized, the phenomenon of shell structure and spatial integrity in the churches of the 4th-14th centuries was highlighted, the tendencies of evolution of the masonry monolithic nature and church structure integrity were revealed by a comparative analysis of volumetric and planning characteristics of different churches. The results allowed to formulate a certain sequence of interactions in different characteristics, which confirmed the relationship between the evolution of the masonry and the structure of the churches: the evolution of “midis” masonry led to the structural monolithic nature of the walls and the forms derived from it, which in turn led to the integrity of the stone building structure. The results can be useful in further research covering structural-compositional interrelations, including both heritage and modern architecture studies.

Opis:
The conservation program of the Polish–Egyptian Conservation Mission in Marina el-Alamein in 2017 included restoration of wall structures and architectural decoration elements damaged as a result of unfavorable climate conditions (Houses H9/H9a and H21, Rooms 10 and 11 in the Roman baths). Wall paintings exposed to weather conditions in situ were treated as part of another conservation project. Minor metal finds were also treated using both chemical and mechanical means in order to identify the objects.
