This paper presents issues concerning the selection of spark plugs for engines fuelled with natural gas. There are discussed the specific conditions for proper ignition and combustion o f natural gas in SI engine. The new model of spark plug for ignition of natural gas-air mixture was designed and manufactured in collaboration with Iskra Zakłady Precyzyjne Sp. z o. o. from Kielce. The way of assessing of the performance of the new spark plug after test operation in a bus after 10 thousand km, 15 thousand km and 30 thousand km is presented. These tests allow preparing mass production of spark plugs for professional ignition system for SI engines fuelled with natural gas. New spark plugs will provide a longer service life compared to previously used. They also make it possible to eliminate the extinction of the arc between the electrodes and an electrical misfire in subsequent cycles of engine operation. As a consequence, fuel consumption reduction and reduction of emissions of unburned hydrocarbons into the atmosphere is expected. Apositive effect of the application of new spark plugs can be also longer engine service life. The introduction of the new spark plugs contributes to fulfil the strategy elaborated by EU which foresees the effective use ofalternativefuels, especially natur al gas which is good alternative for gasoline and diesel oil because of possibility of fulfilment of European emission and noise standards.

Stwierdzono, że stosowanie normatywnego iskiernika IEC do realizacji technicznej komutacji awaryjnej typu "zwarcie" lub "rozwarcie" w badaniach obwodów elektrycznych z wykorzystaniem barier iskrobezpieczeństwa z nieliniową charakterystyką prądowo-napięciową typu "z podcięciem" (foldback), staje się niemożliwe, ponieważ jego konstrukcja mechaniczna nie zapewnia prawidłowego funkcjonowania takich barier, dokonujących zwierania zacisków wejściowych obwodu chronionego. Innymi słowy, przy prędkości obrotowej elektrod wolframowych, 80 obr/min iskiernika i elektrody kadmowej, obracającej się wolniej w przeciwnym kierunku, mającej dwie równoległe szczeliny szerokości 2 mm w tarczy o średnicy 30 mm, uniemożliwia powrót bariery iskrobezpieczeństwa do stanu pierwotnego, po dokonaniu zwarcia biegunów zasilania. Problem ten szczególnie uwidacznia się podczas badania barier iskrobezpieczeństwa z wykorzystaniem wartości pochodnej prądu lub napięcia w algorytmie funkcjonowania. Zaproponowano metodykę eksperymentalnej oceny właściwości ochronnych barier iskrobezpieczeństwa z nieliniową charakterystyką prądowo-napięciową oraz jej techniczną realizację. Podstawę metodyki stanowią pomiary oscyloskopowe z układem mechanicznym (iskiernikiem) do dokonywania komutacji awaryjnej typu "zwarcie" lub "rozwarcie" w badanym układzie elektrycznym bez zastosowania probierczej mieszaniny gazowo-powietrznej. Opracowano konstrukcję mechaniczną iskiernika nadającego się do empirycznej estymacji wartości energii elektrycznej wydzielanej w punkcie komutacji awaryjnej przy stosowaniu barier iskrobezpieczeństwa z nieliniową charakterystyką prądowo-napięciową. Zbudowano stanowisko pomiarowe i przeprowadzono pomiary weryfikacyjne. Przedstawiona metoda eksperymentalnej estymacji wartości energii elektrycznej, wyzwalanej w kanale wyładowania elektrycznego oraz jej realizacja sprzętowa, pozwalają na: - przekonanie się a priori o iskrobezpieczeństwie projektowanego obwodu (układu) elektrycznego, - dokonanie analizy poziomu iskrobezpieczeństwa obwodu elektrycznego w zależności od wartości elementów i układów tworzących ten obwód (układ), - zmniejszenie, ogólnie rzecz biorąc, kosztów opracowania i wdrożenia aparatury elektrycznej przeznaczonej do pracy w strefach zagrożonych wybuchem, - badanie iskrobezpieczeństwa obwodów elektrycznych ze zwiększonym, pod względem iskrobezpieczeństwa, natężeniem prądu. Metodyka eksperymentalnej oceny nie wymaga stosowania probierczej mieszaniny gazowo--powietrznej, a więc może być stosowana w jednostkach gospodarczych zajmujących się projektowaniem i wytwarzaniem aparatury elektrycznej, przeznaczonej do pracy w strefach zagrożonych wybuchem, do wstępnej przedcertyfikacyjnej analizy zastosowanych rozwiązań technicznych.
It has been stated that the application of standard IEC spark gap for technical realisation of failure commutation of "shorting" or "open" type in testing electric circuits with making use of spark safety barriers with nonlinear current-voltage characteristic of foldback type becomes impossible. It results from their mechanical construction which does not ensure the proper operation of such barriers which carry out short-circuiting protected circuit input terminals. In other words, at the rotational speed of 80 rot/min of the spark gap wolfram electrodes and the cadmium electrode which rotates slower in the opposite direction and has two parallel gaps of 2 mm wide in the disk of 30 mm in diameter disallowing the spark safety barrier to return to its primary condition after carrying out supply poles short-circuiting. This problem is especially shown during testing spark safety barriers with making use of the current derivative value or voltage in operational algorithm. Experimental methodology of evaluation of protective properties of spark safety barriers with non linear current-voltage characteristic and their technical realisation has been proposed. The basis of the methodology constitutes oscilloscope measurements with the mechanical system (spark gap) for carrying out failure commutation of "short circuit" or "open" type in the tested electrical system without the application of test gas and air mixture. Mechanical construction of the spark gap has been elaborated. It is suitable to the empiric estimation of the electrical energy value which is emitted at the point of failure commutation at the application of spark safety barriers with nonlinear current- voltage characteristic. A measuring position has been built and verification measurements have been carried out. Presented methodology of experimental estimation of electrical energy value that releases in the channel of electrical discharge and its equipment realisation enables: - to convince a priori of the spark safety of a designed electric system, - to carry out the analysis of the spark safety level of an electric system depending on the value of elements and systems creating the circuit (system), - to test spark safety of electric circuits, - to decrease generally the cost of its elaboration and implementation of electric apparatus assigned for working in explosive conditions zones, - to test the spark safety of electric circuits with increased, in terms of spark safety, current intensity. The experimental methodology of estimation does not require the application of test gas and air mixture so it may be applied by economic units dealing with designing and manufacturing electric apparatus, assigned for working in explosive conditions zones, for the initial before-verification analysis of applied technical solutions.

The experimental study was conducted to investigate the effects of different opening ranges of waste gate of a turbocharged medium displacement spark ignition engine on improving work parameters such as exhaust emission, torque characteristics and fuel consumption. The object of the experimental tests was an engine with modified intake and exhaust manifolds. The intake and exhaust manifold modification included only implementation of turbocharger with the variable geometry turbine. The values of boost pressure were controlled by the system with waste gate valves with a changeable characteristic and a control valve. Work parameters of waste-gate valves have been selected experimentally. Boost pressure had to be reduced to 1.3 and to 1.5 bar in the range of medium values of throttle opening. The system with waste-gate allowed to increase significantly the torque value at low engine speed range as well as to reduce the boost pressure at high engine speed range for throttle opening values above 50%. In total range engine work, emission of particular exhaust gas components did not exceed the values of the emission suitable for normally aspirated engine. It provided the stable engine 's running in all conditions including variable engine speed and in the whole range of throttle opening angle with restricted fuel consumption. The application of changeable characteristics in the waste gate valve which reduces the charging pressure by controlling characteristics variable of the valve depending on the engine work parameters was controlled by electronic system. The controlled system allows improving parameters of engine performance in wide range of engine's rotation speed.

The paper analyses the possibilities of treating the ignition cable in the internal combustion engine as a distributed parameter system. It presents the experimental verification of computer simulations of signal propagation generated by ignition systems in the ignition cables, modelled by the distributed parameter system. The tests conducted to determine the wave parameters of ignition cables, as well as the results of numerical simulations and their experimental verifications, are presented. It is concluded that the modelling of the ignition cable by means of a long line gives positive results that can be used for the design of a spark plug with impedance equal to wave impedance of the ignition cable.

In this study, spark ignition engine fuelled with buthanol-gasoline mixture and a hydrogen-enriched air was investigated. Engine performance, emissions and combustion characteristics were investigated with different buthanol (10% and 20% by volume) gasoline mixtures and additionally supplied oxygen and hydrogen (HHO) gas mixture (3.6 l/min) in the sucked air. Hydrogen, which is in the HHO gas, improves gasoline and gasoline-buthanol mixture combustion, increases indicated pressure during combustion phase and decreases effective specific fuel consumption. Buthanol addition decreases the rate of heat release, the combustion temperature and pressure are lower which have an influence on lower nitrous oxide (NOx) emission in exhaust gases. Buthanol lowers hydrocarbon (HC) formation, but it increases carbon monoxide (CO) concentration and fuel consumption. Combustion process analysis was carried out using AVL BOOST software. Experimental research and combustion process numerical simulation showed that using balanced buthanol and hydrogen addition, optimal efficient and ecological parameters could be achieved when engine is working with optimal spark timing, as it would work on gasoline fuel.

The content of this article describes the area of the operation of speedway racing motorcycles, it reflects the specific use, and thus, the special requirements placed on the internal combustion engines used there. Then, a research tool is presented in the form of Computational Fluid Dynamics methods. The article presents basic equations as a base for software, and emphasizes the essence and necessity of adequate selection of turbulence models. Presentation of the work tool is crowned with a brief description of the application in the form of Ansys numerical analysis software and a specific place and possibilities of its application. The practical part describes the work carried out during the tests of a GM 500 type combustion engine and attempts to compare two types of exhaust systems whose advantages and disadvantages in analytical calculations are difficult to determine, whereas CFD tests accurately represent pressure fields, velocities and the most important parameter in the form of resistance of the exhaust system. The article is crowned with the results of tests enabling determination and selection of the exhaust system with lower flow resistance and recommendations adjusting the exhaust system to a specific engine.

Wstęp i cele: W artykule przedstawiono wpływ pojemności układu zapłonowego na kąt wyprzedzenia zapłonu ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem pojemności świec zapłonowych. Do przeskoku iskry zapłonowej w samochodzie z zapłonem ZI, niezbędne jest naładowanie się wszystkich pojemności elektrycznych oraz przebicie przerwy między elektrodami świecy zapłonowej. Dielektrykiem, jest mieszanka paliwowo-powietrzna. Jej właściwości zmieniają się. Metodyka: Badaniu poddano iskrowy układ zapłonowy oraz przeprowadzono analizę otrzymanych wyników pomiarów. Wyniki: Proces ładowania pojemności świecy zapłonowej przebiega przed igłą napięcia przeskoku iskry. W miarę wzrostu prędkości obrotowej wału korbowego czas ładowania ulega zmniejszeniu. Związane jest to ze wzrostem jonizacji ładunku. Na przebieg procesu ładowania pojemności świecy zapłonowej ma również wpływ rezystancja między elektrodami świecy zapłonowej, ulega ona zmianie wraz z prędkością obrotową i obciążeniem silnika. Wynika to ze zmiany współczynnika λ oraz zawartość jonów z poprzedniego zapłonu. Wniosek: Na podstawie przeprowadzonego eksperymentu można potwierdzić wpływ pojemności świecy zapłonowej na przebieg procesu wytworzenia iskry zapłonowej. Wiąże się to ze zmianą pojemności świecy między elektrodami zapłonowymi.
Introduction and aim: The article presents the impact of the capacity of the ignition system on the ignition timing with particular emphasis on the capacity of the spark plugs. To jump of ignition spark in car with ignition the ZI, indispensable loading all electric capacities is as well as the puncture between electrodes of ignition candle pause. Dielectric, mixture is fuel - aerial. Her proprieties change. Material and methods: A spark ignition system was put through an examination as well as analysis of received results of measurements was conducted. Results: Process of loading the capacity of the candle is running sparks in front of the needle of stretching the jump. Just enough of increase in the rotation speed of the crankshaft the time of loading is undergoing the reduction. It is connected with the height of the ionization of the cargo. To the course of the process of loading the capacity of the candle a resistance is also affecting between electrodes of the candle, she is spark plug along with the rotation speed and the engine load. It results from the change of the λ rate and the content of ions from the previous ignition. Conclusion: Based on conducted experiment it is possible to confirm the influence of the capacity of the candle to the course of the process of generating the spark. It is connected with a change of the capacity of the candle between electrodes.

The purpose of the investigation was the application of two turbochargers system in spark ignition engine and determining turbochargers' work parameters depending on throttle opening and engine's rotation speed. System with small turbocharger and larger variable geometry turbocharger in parallel connection (three-stage turbocharging) was examined. The engine used during the investigation was 1300 cm displacement SI engine with modified intake and exhaust manifolds. Intake and exhaust manifold modification including only implementation of turbochargers and sensors was done for experimental purposes. Specific values of maximum boost pressure were obtained by introducing a waste gate valve system with appropriate characteristic. Proper choice concerning work parameters of the charging system allows to improve torque characteristic in wide range of engine's rotation speed. The system with additional small turbocharger allowed to increase torque value in low engine's speed range as well as to increase boost pressure in high engine's speed range for throttle opening angle values above 50 %. In medium engine's speed range the best results were given by variable geometry turbocharger. The two turbochargers system and values of maximum boost pressure were controlled by the system with two waste gate valves. Improving total efficiency was obtained in medium engine's speed range. The application of two turbochargers system as modification of naturally aspirated spark ignition engine allows to improve torque flexibility rate. There is a possibility to apply the charging system with two turbochargers, with boost pressure control system, in already existing, naturally aspirated engine without decreasing compression ratio and modifying engine's control system.

In the present work there have been shown the results of initial researches concerning heat release process in the spark ignition engine with inner catalyst. There has been presented the calculative model of heat release process and calculative methodology leading to obtaining temperature course, combustion function and its derivative because of measured course of combustion pressure. The pressure courses, which are necessary for calculations, were obtained on the measure seat with AD 1600 engine that is load with eddy- current brake. The engine was equipped with spark plug with miniature pressure sensor f-my Kistler, and the courses of pressure were recorded by the use of f-my Smetec apparatus. The courses of heat release process were analysed in rotations of n=1500 rotations/min and n=3000 rotations/minute and load of 50 Nm and 70 Nm. The analysis was made comparatively for the system with the catalyst and without catalyst. In the work there have been presented the results of experimental and model researches which aim was the analysis of the issue of influencing the catalytic active surfaces placed in the spark ignition engine combustion space. Those surfaces, catalysing the process of creating combustible mixture and its combustion, influence the combustion process course and, simultaneously, have impact on the engine work parameters and the heat release course.

The electric and magnetic fields surrounding a laser spark formed after an optical breakdown due to a focused nanosecond laser beam in a gaseous environment are examined in order to assess their possible influence on the processes going on in the gas medium, mainly chemical reactions triggered by the spark plasma radiation. The magnetic field is generated by the standard mechanism of crossed electron density and temperature gradients, the electric field is supposed to be produced by the plasma polarization due to its radial expansion across the self-generated magnetic field. A simple model of spark plasma formation near the tip of the focal cone is assumed, with a delayed breakdown, which allows the focused laser light to sweep the whole volume of the forming spark right down to the focal caustic and thus to form a centimeter long plasma cone. In this conical geometry, the value of plasma electric dipole moment is evaluated as a measurable quantity as well as approximate values of the electric and magnetic field near the focal caustic, where they both tend to grow in magnitude.

Synthetic gas (syngas) produced form waste organic matter may be used as a fuel for internal combustion engines. Possibilities of syngas application as an independent IC engine energy carrier are limited. Designed system of energy conversion from waste to electricity is expected to produce gas consists mainly carbon monoxide, methane, hydrogen and carbon dioxide. Based on theoretical study and own research, as the main factors which impact on floating syngas composition the quality of input substance, process temperature and gasifying medium application were identified. The fluctuation of syngas composition contributes important challenge in aspect of energetic efficiency and mechanical durability of generator system. The researches were provided on research test bed, which enables pressure distribution measurement in the combustion chamber (for various mixture of synthetic gases) and correction of ignition timing. The results of the researches indicate that proper correction of the ignition advance allows syngas mixtures combustion in wide range of their composition.

Tandem mass spectrometry is an analytical technique widely used in proteomics for the high-throughput characterization of proteins in biological samples. Modern in-depth proteomic studies require the collection of even millions of mass spectra representing short protein fragments (peptides). In order to identify the peptides, the measured spectra are most often scored against a database of amino acid sequences of known proteins. Due to the volume of input data and the sizes of proteomic databases, this is a resource-intensive task, which requires an efficient and scalable computational strategy. Here, we present SparkMS, an algorithm for peptide and protein identification from mass spectrometry data explicitly designed to work in a distributed computational environment. To achieve the required performance and scalability, we use Apache Spark, a modern framework that is becoming increasingly popular not only in the field of “big data” analysis but also in bioinformatics. This paper describes the algorithm in detail and demonstrates its performance on a large proteomic dataset. Experimental results indicate that SparkMS scales with the number of worker nodes and the increas-ing complexity of the search task. Furthermore, it exhibits a protein identification efficiency comparable to X!Tandem, a widely-used proteomic search engine.

The paper deals with the laser beam welding of tips to central and side spark plug electrodes made of a nickel-chromium alloy. The tips attached to the central electrodes were made from a solid iridium wire 0.8 mm in diameter and 2 mm in length, while the tips connected to the side electrodes were made from a platinum wire 1.5 mm in diameter and 0.25 mm in thickness. In both cases, accurate positioning of the tips was required before they were resistance welded to the electrodes. Then, a fillet weld was produced with an Nd:YAG laser using single, partly overlapping conductive pulses. The laser welding was performed at different laser power levels and pulse durations. Metallographic sections of the joints were prepared to observe changes in the microstructure and determine their correlation with the changes in the process parameters. The results were used to select appropriate welding parameters for the materials joined. The microscopic analysis indicated welding imperfections such as micro cracks at the interface between the elements joined. The tips welded to the spark plug electrodes can help extend the service life of spark plugs in highly corrosive environments.

Opis:
Microstructure and mechanical properties of the 316L steel composite reinforced with TiB2 phase were examined. The test materials were obtained by SPS technique from powders. From testing of the mechanical properties it follows that the optimum temperature for the fabrication of 316Lsteel-TiB2 composites by SPS is 1100°C. Studies have also proved that the critical content of TiB2 phase in steel matrix should not exceed 6vol%. Above this level, the plastic properties of the composite become unstable and strongly dependent on the time of sintering.
