Opis:
The thematic diversity and the way narrative is understood demonstrate the vitality of the concept and the phenomenon of narrative in psychology. This article presents some questions and dilemmas that narrative psychology, which is still a young discipline in search of its scientific identity, pose to researchers. It is not our ambition to resolve these questions; instead, we perceive them as moments of (dis)continuity in the ongoing narrative story and as markers of the directions of research and theoretical considerations. We identify such themes as the distinction between utterance and narrative, the space between author and listener, the directions in which the notion of narrative identity is expanding, and the link between narrative structure and narrative process. The methodological diversity the narrative perspective introduces allows us to pose research questions in a qualitative and quantitative approach.

The main goal of this article is to demonstrate the significant value of using narrative interviews in research on the education of talented learners. The authors decided to highlight the value of such research in the case of a specific group of learners. However, it might prove valuable to mention the special features of that method and some challenges that can appear in such research. The authors investigate the importance of applying narrative inquiry, especially narrative interviewing, in research on talented individuals. As for the research approach, it is embedded in qualitative methods. The authors present a retrospective secondary analysis based on their previous research into talented people’s experience of education, from an approach of both writer and reviewer. The introduction contains an outline of the subject of the text. Then, a description of narrative interviews and of talented learners is presented. The research method is also characterized. The previous results regarding talented learners’ experience of education are presented. Finally, the research results and recommendations for research practice are provided. The narrative interview technique proved to be a suitable method for the social sciences. It is appropriate for research on talented learners and their experiences within the educational process. Thanks to narrative interviews, researchers can reveal many important matters, such as learners’ intellectual talents and accomplishments, their relationships with themselves and other people, and some important common patterns of their functioning, such as perfectionism or non-conformism. Moreover, the research material can very rich and researchers can interpret it in very interesting ways so that the readers (educators and parents) can understand this particular group of learners and provide them with a convenient, conducive educational environment. The final section consists of some possibilities for researchers who want to use narrative interviewing as a method of research. The authors suggest obtaining some psychological and interpretative skills and building good relationships with the narrators.

The conceptual category of the reasoning narrative is the starting point for the considerations presented. Looking at the concept through the prism of interpretative interactionism and the phenomenological and hermeneutic approach helps to discover the meaning and significanceof each of the perspectives for the discovery of wealth of understanding of everything that the human person is involved in and of the world he resides in, creates and converts to his own needs. The considerations in the text stress the importance of human reflection, ability to retrace feelings in the individual biography and of being able to interpret one’s own experiences. Presenting these considerations in the biographic-narrative orientation reveals the essence of understanding of the issues discussed in the article from the perspective of the experiencing subject.

This article is a proposal of identity research through its process and narrative character. As a starting point I present a definition of identity understood as the whole life process of finding identification. Next I present my own model of auto/biography-narrative research inspired by hermeneutic and phenomenological traditions of thinking about experiencing reality. I treat auto/biography-narrative research as a means of exploratory conduct, based on the narrator’s biography data, also considering the researcher’s autobiographical thought. In the final part of the article I focus on showing the narrative structure of identity and autobiography. I emphasise this relation in definitions qualifying autobiography as written life narration and identity as a narration of autobiography.

The institutionalized racism that once subjugated the Black majority during South Africa’s apartheid years gave way after 1994 to legislature that aims to bring the country into a new era of egalitarianism. A striking result of this has been the steady flow of young Black people achieving upward mobility and making the transition into the middle- and upper-classes. This article explores young Black South Africans’ lived experiences of upward mobility, as well as their efforts to negotiate between separate and often contrasting identities by applying an interpretive sociological framework to their narrative accounts.

Recent years have seen tremendous growth of interest in narrative approaches to research in both the social sciences and the humanities. Much of this research focuses on the stories of individuals and how they tell them. This article addresses the contribution of a symbolic interactionist approach to develop the “collective story” (Richardson 1990) through the use of sensitizing concepts. It focuses on research on the experience of widows, widowers, and Iranian Bahá’í refugees to Canada to demonstrate how one can use sensitizing concepts to craft a collective story of members of marginalized populations that sit at the bottom of the “hierarchy of credibility” (Becker 1967).

Opis:
The (re)presentation of biographic narrative research benefits greatly from embracing the art of its craft. This requires a renewed interest in an aesthetic of storytelling. Where do we find an aesthetic in which to base our new “performative” social science? The 20th Century was not kind to 18th Century notions of what truth and beauty mean. The terms need to be re-examined from a local, quotidian vantage point, with concepts such as “aesthetic judgment” located within community. Social Constructionism asks us to participate in alterior systems of belief and value. The principles of Nicolas Bourriaud’s Relational Aesthetics offer one possible set of convictions for further exploration. Relational Art is located in human interactions and their social contexts. Central to it are inter-subjectivity, being-together, the encounter and the collective elaboration of meaning, based in models of sociability, meetings, events, collaborations, games, festivals and places of conviviality. Bourriaud believes that Art is made of the same material as social exchanges. If social exchanges are the same as Art, how can we portray them? One place to start is in our (re)presentations of narrative stories, through publications, presentations and performances. Arts-based (re)presentation in knowledge diffusion in the post-modern era is explored as one theoretical grounding for thinking across epistemologies and supporting inter-disciplinary efforts. An example from my own published narrative biography work is described, adding credence to the concept of the research report/presentation as a “dynamic vehicle”, pointing to ways in which biographic sociology can benefit from work outside sociology and, in turn, identifying areas of possible collaboration with the narrator in producing “performances” within published texts themselves.

This paper attempts to take a critical look at the narrative interview in order to identify the methodological pitfalls and challenges posed by this widely-applied research tool. It analyses the research process in a project involving sixty-four 3rd year students of applied linguistics at a large university in western Poland in the summer term of the academic year 2018/2019. The project included three stages: (1) interviewing a person from another country studying in Poland about their intercultural experiences; (2) transcribing the interviews and (3) presenting the results of their analysis in the form of a written report. On completion of their assignments, the students were asked to share their reflections on all stages of their research in an anonymous survey study. The questionnaire data was juxtaposed with analysis of the student transcripts and reports in order to identify and compare the student and the teacher perspectives on methodological aspects of narrative research. The outcomes of the survey study show that the students, as inexperienced or even first-time researchers, mostly focused on their language proficiency and technical aspects of the interview, while the teacher/researcher pointed primarily to flaws in the formulation of the interview questions and lack of subsequent probing questions, which resulted in superficial responses or even at times deprived the interview of a narrative character. The study also documented the evolution of students as researchers and its results might be applicable for teachers offering courses in academic writing or BA/MA seminars.

Opis:
International Pathfinders is a systematic study of the biographical significance of educational mobility within a European context. It builds upon autobiographical narrative material gathered through the EuroIdentities project. The study aims to combine the elements of social theory and the most recent research in the area of internationalisation of higher education with biographical material in order to understand and push the academic debate even further. This article employs a three-stage sequence of educational mobility – leaving home, the experience itself, and the return – as a core structure for discussing and presenting the cases. Within that framework, issues such as influence of cultural and symbolic capitals and specific characteristics of the educational structures of opportunities are explored. Biographical consequences of educational mobility take the form of an international frame of reference, allowing international students to navigate in complex international relations, and can be considered the source of social status both in an international and a national context.
Artykuł rozpatruje mobilność edukacyjną z punku widzenia jej sekwencyjnych stadiów – wyjazd, pobyt i powrót – co daje możliwość systematyzacji i prezentacji materiału biograficznego.

This paper attempts to contribute to the discussion on the use of biographical narratives in investigating FL teacher careers and bring to light their potential in teacher education, especially in the process of developing teacher identity and reflexivity. Biographical narratives provide indepth insights into individual professional careers which are viewed holistically, in the context the narrator’s life. Focused on the subjective dimensions of professional careers, narratives involve identification and interpretation of key events and persons in particular life stories, which stimulate the narrator’s reflexivity and enable them to find connections between episodes and make them meaningful.

W artykule dokonano przeglądu wybranych badań psychologicznych, w których jako źródło danych wykorzystano teksty pisane, w tym dokumenty osobiste. Scharakteryzowane zostały procedury badawcze i rezultaty w ramach dwóch podejść: ilościowego i jakościowego.
This article reviews some selected psychological studies, the source of which are written texts, including personal documents. The test procedures and its results were described in two ways: the quantitative and the qualitative one. The results of the quantitative research were selected depending on their use for the text interpretation, with the focus on the narrator (the relationship between the form of expression and a mental state or permanent mental disposition). The research on fixing meanings of personal identity (narrative or dialogue), or the meaning of life, is set as the qualitative approach. The starting point is a classic biographical study of Ch. Buehler, then a psychological study based on diaries from the ghetto, then some selected results of over 20-years’ study on the narrative identity of D. McAdams and finally the study using H. Hermans’s Dialogical Self Theory in clinical psychology.

Many researchers argue that the analysis process of any narrative and biographical inquiry is a delicate, arduous and complex stage and requires creativity, advanced skills and the technique of the researcher. This research note, based on a research project carried out in Spain, makes a unique contribution to this debate by reflecting about the Cross-Narrative Model, whose father was Lewis (1973), introducing two concepts: Biographical Units and the Analysis Units. Furthermore, it describes the analysis process laying emphasis on the particular methodological challenges and possible benefits of using these units to build up a two-part biographical account. This research note concludes that the use of the Cross-Narrative Analysis model could be considered as a possible alternative to the on-going discussion on advancing the rigorous and resourcefulness narrative qualitative analysis endeavour.

Insider research, i.e. research that the researcher conducts on a population, community, or identity group of which he or she is himself or herself a member, has been gaining popularity in psychological research in recent years. A subject of lively debate in the literature is the importance of the researcher’s characteristics shared with the research participant: life experiences, specific aspects of identity, traits, skills, or attitudes. This article summarises current knowledge on insider research and draws attention to the importance of analysing the psychologist researcher’s insider and outsider status. The article begins with an outline of the history of consideration of the importance of the researcher’s status in the social sciences and four main strategies for researchers to approach their insider status: minimizing and maximizing its importance, incorporating their experiences into the research material, and using them at different stages of the research process. Then, using the example of the author’s research project, it is shown how the last strategy can be applied during narrative research in planning the study, recruiting participants, conducting interviews, and analysing the data. The final part of the text is a consideration of the ethical dilemmas surrounding the conduct of insider research.

Biographical approaches are increasingly being used with people who speak and write a range of languages. Even when an account is originally spoken, the final version usually ends up written in the language used by the majority of the population. Researchers have shown that adopting a language that is not the one an account was given in may change how someone is perceived. Yet little has been written by sociologists using biographical approaches about the implications of moving accounts across languages. Researchers within translation and interpretation studies are increasingly tackling issues of representation across languages and developing concepts that can usefully be applied in biographical research. They question the assumption that accounts can be unproblematically transferred across languages and argue for strategies and concepts that “foreignise” texts and challenge the baseline of the target, usually for these writers, English language. However, these concepts bring issues of their own. In this article I examine these developments and give an example from my own cross language research that show that these concepts can begin to open up debates about meaning and representation.

Some consider the multiculturality of Wrocław to be its obvious and socially legitimised “property”, whereas others view it as controversial and refutable construct. In the paper, we would like to investigate the multiculturality of the Lower Silesia’s capital taking into account its internal differentiation, which is mostly due to the adjudicating authorities – city authorities, its citizens and researchers - as well as observable dynamics. Hence, we propose to inspect the following: firstly, the real differentiation of the social structure of Wrocław’s inhabitants and its transformations related mostly to the influx of Ukrainians, who change the ethnic cityscape; secondly, the politics of municipal authorities regarding the promotion and strengthening of the city’s image as the multicultural, open and tolerant “meeting place”, as well as initiatives inscribed therein and other observable, contradictory events; thirdly, the evaluation of Wrocław’s multiculturality and its selected aspects performed by the city’s inhabitants and revealed in the research on this phenomenon in 2011 and in two editions of Social Diagnosis of Wrocław (2014 and 2017).
