A modern world’s transportation system in the global economy shows a high level of complexity of networks and transport processes. The division between the stages of carriage by modes of transport is often blurred, and delivery process itself increasingly involved more than one of its modes. Therefore, there are many different concepts and definitions that attempt to capture what is changing and relates to the transport sector. With this article we try to systematize concepts operating in the field of multimodal transport and propose a reasoned one, common definition of intermodal transport as such a concept, which is able to extend to all transport processes consist of at least two transport modes with supporting of unitized cargo.

The presented paper comes as a summary of a theoretical work presenting an original algorithm describing International Multimodal Transport (IMT) mechanisms and processes. Since containers appeared in early 1960s on the regional, and later on, on global scale in logistic operations, the IMT has become the fastest growing combination of an international through-transport. With use of various modes of transport IMT has significant influence on global trade development. Due to its characteristic the IMT process is exposed on the global unitization, standardization, safety, security and economization (optimization) challenges. Thus, there is a need for scientific approach in building a standardized conceptual model of IMT referred in this paper to CAIMT. CAIMT is an original, deterministic algorithm, presented in the block notation, identifying typical procedures as a logical continuation of the programmed sequence of the basic IMT operations. The suggested CAIMT has a potential in further standardization of IMT procedures and can be scientifically developed through the modeling of the IMT processes and safety/security procedures. In addition, in terms of empirical aspects, algorithmization of the main IMT processes can lead to their application in the various expert systems. Summing up, this method (CAIMT) comes as an optimal instrument that can be utilized in order to build further pillars for IMT development, standardization and optimization.

Efficient transport solutions are based on multimodal systems, with the dominant role of rail and road transport in land versions of the systems and the connecting and directing part of intermodal terminals, transhipment terminals or warehouse centres. The implementation of transport processes is always associated with the risk of lack of timeliness (quality) or threats to people, equipment and cargo (safety) resulting from human, technical, organizational and global factors like pandemics or war. The article contains a risk mapping method in multimodal transport systems configured to estimate the risk of lowering the quality of logistics services (on-time deliveries, etc.). The method combines factors usually considered separately in studies on individual modes of transport. A formal notation of risk factors as a mathematical model was proposed, and a case study was provided to picture the implementation.

Multimodal Transport Systems ensure flexibility by enabling transport users to select the most appropriate transport mode within the speed pyramide. The real advantage of multimodality appears in situations of unattended disturbances (machine failure, onset of winter, floodwater, strike or risk of penalty for late deliveries). No single transport mode can pretend to have the optimal solution for all types of transport tasks. And no transport object can bear transport costs to an unlimited height. The Annex deals with a widespread misunderstanding: the interchangeable use of the terms 'transport needs' and 'transport demand'.

Opis:
Multimodal transport is a systematic combination of different modes of transport such as railway, road and water transport, aviation, and other traditional transport modes that can take advantages of each individual modes and achieve higher efficiency. This paper presents an overview of legal issues concerning the multimodal carriage of goods. The authors focus on the evolution of the international law regulations of the freight transportation with particular reference to the issues connected to multimodal transport. The critical review of existing international conventions and their provisions pertaining to multimodal transportation and the “maritime plus” regime of the Rotterdam Rules is provided. In addition, the problems generated by the lack of uniform multimodal carriage law are highlighted by the authors and the perspectives recommendations concerning multimodal transportation of goods are proposed. These problems will be addressed by means of an analysis of the current legal framework in relation to multimodal carriage and an assessment of how within this framework the law applicable to a multimodal contract may be uncovered.
Transport multimodalny to systematyczne połączenie różnych środków transportu, takich jak transport kolejowy, drogowy , wodny, lotniczy itp. , w ramach którego wykorzystuje się zalety każdego z rodzajów transportu, tym samym osiągając wyższą wydajność. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono przegląd zagadnień prawnych dotyczących multimodalnego przewozu towarów. Autorzy koncentrują się na ewolucji międzynarodowego prawa regulującego transport towarowy ze szczególnym uwzględnieniem zagadnień związanych z transportem multimodalnym. Na potrzeby artykułu przygotowano krytyczny przegląd istniejących konwencji międzynarodowych i ich postanowień dotyczących transportu multimodalnego oraz reżimu "morski plus" z reguł rotterdamskich. Ponadto, autorzy przedstawili problemy wynikające z braku jednolitego multimodalnego prawa przewozowego, a także propozycje dotyczące multimodalnego transportu towarów. Problemy te są omawiane poprzez analizę aktualnych ram prawnych w odniesieniu do przewozu multimodalnego oraz ocenę, w jaki sposób w ramach tych ram można znaleźć prawo dotyczące umów multimodalnych

Unia Europejska, Europejska Konferencja Ministrów Transportu i Europejska Komisja Gospodarcza Organizacji Narodów Zjednoczonych uznały, że transport multimodalny może odgrywać znaczącą rolę w kreowaniu europejskiej polityki zrównoważonego rozwoju transportu. Działania związane z promowaniem rozwoju transportu multimodalnego w Unii Europejskiej mogą obecnie oraz w przyszłości rozwiązać niektóre problemy transportowe przez: - odciążenie nadmiernie zatłoczonej europejskiej sieci dróg kołowych, - zmniejszenie negatywnych dla zdrowia i życia człowieka oraz dla środowiska naturalnego skutków spowodowanych dynamicznie rozwijającym się w Europie Zachodniej i Środkowo-Wschodniej transportem samochodowym. Celem niniejszego artykułu jest zaprezentowanie istoty rozwiązań technologicznych transportu multimodalnego oraz działań promocyjnych jego rozwoju w Unii Europejskiej, a zwłaszcza rozwiązań w zakresie metodyki określania i szacowania kosztów zewnętrznych poszczególnych gałęzi transportu.
The European Union, the European Conference of Transport Ministers and the European Economic Commission of the United Nations have recognized that multimodal transport can create a significant role in creating European policy of balanced transport development. Activities connected with promoting the development of multimodal transport in the European Union are able, now and in the future, solve certain transport problems by: - relieving the overcrowded network of European vehicular roads, - decreasing the negative results, harmful for man's health and life and the natural environment, caused by the dynamically developing car transport in Western, Central and Eastern Europe. The purpose of this article is to present the essence of technological solutions of multimodal transport and activities promoting its development in the European Union, especially the methodological solutions of defining and estimating external costs of particular transport branches.

Companies are facing problems regarding reduction of their logistics costs. Good organization of transport processes can bring a lot of profits both economical and environmental. Companies participating in transport processes more often prefer to create temporary relations and form virtual cooperation networks than to keep traditional long-term contracts. The paper first defined problems of multimodal transport. The obstacles to development of virtual transport clusters are described. The main problems and requirements of the virtual cooperation in the area of transport processes are identified. The aim of the paper is to present the scope of information needed for the coordination of virtual transport clusters. Author describes approach to information management in virtual cluster based on agent technology.

The multimodal transportation of transit cargo is suitable for implementation through Bulgaria in the East-Northwest direction through the sea and river ports of the country as an alternative to the Romanian and Greek routes. Among the multimodal routes with a land leg through Bulgaria used and known so far, those via two seaports (Burgas and Varna) and three river ports (Ruse, Svishtov and Vidin) are most suitable. An expert evaluation methodology for selection of the most appropriate route is developed, including the Delphi method. A survey was conducted among 11 highly ranked and internationally recognized Bulgarian experts, known for their exceptional experience in the field of freight forwarding and international cargo transportation through Bulgaria. The results of the study show that the most suitable route for transit transportation is through the ports of Varna and Ruse with intermediate road haulage.

Multimodal transport implementation allows connecting the point of origin and the point of destination in an optimal way. The goal of multimodal transport is to maximize the efficiency in connecting the economic elements of various traffic branches, i.e. their operations related to transport and communications, thus positively reducing the inventories of raw materials, semi-products and end products with the aim of increasing the balance in the overall economic system of a country. The development of multimodal transport and good organization of the traffic system make it possible to increase the existing and to generate new freight flows that would result in positive effects on the import-export balance.

W artykule przedstawiono projekt realizacji multimodalnego portu przeładunkowego na terenie Miejskiego Obszaru Funkcjonalnego Zduńska Wola-Karsznice. Dla osiągnięcia efektów synergicznych na styku infrastruktury drogowej i kolejowej o odpowiednich parametrach i infrastrukturze logistycznej kluczowe znaczenie ma spójny scenariusz rozwoju węzłów odpowiedzialnych za koherentność wskazanych systemów. W pracy wskazano położenie inwestycji w regionalnej sieci transportowej województwa łódzkiego oraz na tle międzynarodowych korytarzy transportowych. Scharakteryzowano etapy rozwoju obiektu logistycznego oraz charakterystykę jego wyposażenia odpowiedzialnego za efektywne łączenie transportu drogowego i kolejowego. Funkcjonalne obszary miejskie z rozwiniętą sferą logistyczną mają za zadanie zapewnić operatorom transportu multimodalnego optymalne warunki prowadzenia działalności gospodarczej, sprzyjając jednocześnie przestrzennemu i ekonomicznemu rozwojowi ośrodków miejskich, na bazie których obszary utworzono.
This article presents project of a multi-modal transshipment port in the Functional Urban Area of Zduńska Wola-Karsznice. In order to achieve synergy effects at the interface between road and rail infrastructure with appropriate parameters and logistics infrastructure is crucial to the development of a coherent scenario for the coherence of nodes specified systems. The study indicated the location of investments in the regional transport network of the Łódź region and against the background of international transport corridors. Stages of development of the logistics facility and the characteristics of the equipment responsible for the effective blending of road and rail transport are described. Functional urban areas with developed sphere of logistics are designed to provide multi-modal transport operators optimal business conditions favoring both spatial and economic development of urban centers, based on which areas are generated.

Real-time transit management systems that can inform the public about transportation options and availability are gradually being deployed in many parts of the world. While many larger cities have been able to provide this information on web sites or through automated telephone systems for several years, smaller municipalities often lack the resources to develop their own transit management systems. Addressing this issue as a joint effort, transportation agencies in the multi-state North American CARS Program have cooperatively developed a real-time, multi-modal transit tracking and incident reporting system called Modes. Modes builds on the CARS road condition reporting system developed by 17 transportation agencies in North America. Modes extends the CARS software to include ferry, bus, and passenger rail services to the basic highway network information it manages. Modes was initially created to track the Alaska Marine Highway System's extensive ferry system and has been successfully applied to New England's popular Acadia National Park bus tracking system, three bus systems in Maine, 13 bus systems in Idaho (in progress), three bus systems and a light rail line in the Sacramento, California area (in progress), as well as the Amtrak Downeaster and Capitol Corridor rail lines.

The operational efficiency of the transport-logistics chains is affected by all actors involved: linear companies, port authorities, stevedores, forwarders, agents as well as of the level of integration of terminals and hinterland transportation modes. At the moment, only the company Niko Transport d.o.o. offers the intermodal way of transport in Slovenia. As for any other transportation problem, time window constraints and the availability of alternative routings of intermodal transport poses additional challenges. The new strategy of the company was named ťWe select greenŤ. Its main goal is the same effect with lower pollution. They understand they are part of whole logistic chains for which it is typical to become more and more sensible to the demands that concerns the protection of the environment. That is also one of the priority strategies of the EU. Launched in the Freight Transport Logistics Action Plan, Green Corridors support today the EU's agenda towards decarbonising transport while emphasising the need for efficient logistics. The goal of the article is to present the business of the Niko Transport d.o.o. company on the UK market, the introduction of the multimodal transport, the approval of the Marco Polo project, the selection of courses and partners. A research of the students of the Caledonian University of Glasgow as a part of the project is also presented in the article.
Operacyjna skuteczność sieci transportowo-logistycznych podlega następującym podmiotom: bieżącym spółkom, władzom portowym, dokerom, spedytorom, agentom, a także poziomowi integracji terminali oraz środkowi transportu zaplecza. Obecnie tylko firma Niko Transport d.o.o. oferuje intermodalny sposób transportu w Słowenii (angażujący więcej niż jeden rodzaj środka transportu). Tak jak w przypadku każdego innego problemu transportowego, ograniczenia okna czasowego i dostępność alternatywnych tras przejazdu intermodalnego transportu stawiają dodatkowe wyzwania. Nowa strategia firmy została nazwana „Wybieramy ekologicznie”. Jej głównym celem jest ten sam efekt, ale przy mniejszym zanieczyszczeniu powietrza. W związku z byciem częścią całej logistycznej sieci coraz istotniejsza staje się wrażliwość na zapotrzebowanie rynku, związane z dbaniem o ochronę środowiska. Jest to również jedna z priorytetowych strategii UE. Zapoczątkowane we Freight Transport Logistics Action Plan – Zielone Korytarze (Green Corridors) wspierają agendę Unii Europejskiej, dążącą do dekarbonizacji transportu przy jednoczesnym podkreślaniu potrzeby skutecznej logistyki. W artykule przedstawiono znaczenie portów morskich w Gdańsku, Gdyni, Szczecinie i Świnoujściu jako krajowych i regionalnych (bałtyckich) węzłów transportu multimodalnego oraz śródlądowego transportu wodnego jako dostawcy i odbiorcy ładunków z tych portów. Wskazano na aspekty ekonomiczne i ekologiczne transportu wodnego oraz aktualne możliwości wykorzystania polskich śródlądowych dróg wodnych.
The article presents the importance of sea ports of Gdansk, Gdynia, Szczecin and Świnoujście as national and regional (Baltic) multimodal transport nodes and inland water transport as a supplier and recipient of goods from these ports. They pointed to the economic and ecological aspects of water transport and the current possibilities of using Polish inland waterways.
