Such undertaking serves as a rich background for the detailed study of discourse of face in cinema and other screen based media.

Opis:
Development of facial recognition or expression recognition algorithms requires input data to thoroughly test the performance of algorithms in various conditions. Researchers are developing various methods to face challenges like illumination, pose and expression changes, as well as facial disguises. In this paper, we propose and establish a dataset of thermal facial images, which contains a set of neutral images in various poses as well as a set of facial images with different posed expressions collected with a thermal infrared camera. Since the properties of face in the thermal domain strongly depend on time, in order to show the impact of aging, collection of the dataset has been repeated and a corresponding set of data is provided. The paper describes the measurement methodology and database structure. We present baseline results of processing using state-of-the-art facial descriptors combined with distance metrics for thermal face re-identification. Three selected local descriptors, a histogram of oriented gradients, local binary patterns and local derivative patterns are used for elementary assessment of the database. The dataset offers a wide range of capabilities - from thermal face recognition to thermal expression recognition.

Opis:
Soft biometrics methods that involve gender, age and ethnicity are still developed. Face recognition methods often rely on gender recognition. The same applies to the methods reconstructing the faces or building 2D or 3D models of the faces. In the paper, we conduct study on different set of gender recognition methods and their mobile applications. We show the advantages and disadvantages of that methods and future challenges to the researches. In the previous papers, we examined a range variety of skin detection methods that help to spot the face in the images or video stream. On acquiring faces, we focus on gender recognition that will allow us to create pattern to build 2D and 3D automatic faces models from the images. That will result also in face recognition and authentication, also.

Biometric databases are important components that help improve the performanceof state-of-the-art recognition applications. The availability of more andmore challenging data is attracting the attention of researchers, who are systematicallydeveloping novel recognition algorithms and increasing the accuracyof identification. Surprisingly, most of the popular face datasets (like LFW orIJBA) are not fully unconstrained. The majority of the available images werenot acquired on-the-move, which reduces the amount of blurring that is causedby motion or incorrect focusing. Therefore, the COMPACT database for studyingless-cooperative face recognition is introduced in this paper. The datasetconsists of high-resolution images of 108 subjects acquired in a fully automatedmanner as people go through the recognition gate. This ensures that the collecteddata contains real-world degradation factors: different distances, expressions,occlusions, pose variations, and motion blur. Additionally, the authorsconducted a series of experiments that verified the face-recognition performanceon the collected data.

This paper explores the notion of compassion and points to some intricacies inherent in it, in particular the paradox of egocentrism. Most ambiguous is its ontological status: is it an emotion, a virtue, a moral commitment, or a neurological reflex? Each category entails different implications for the process of educating compassionate beings. The conclusion is that genuine compassion is, from the very beginning, not just mere feeling, it is based on the recognition of rights of others. A person in need is much more than the object of our noble compassionate feelings and caring help, she is the subject of rights.

This qualitative exploration is a follow-up study to the quantitative research published in a peer-reviewed international journal in 2023. Generally, the study delved into the transition experiences and preferences of 20 Filipino education supervisors in relation to their supervisory practices in over 80 Philippine public schools. Through validated open-ended interview questions, the responses were gathered and subsequently subjected to thematic analysis, which resulted in the emergence of the following themes: (1) the adjustments and challenges of the supervisors as they switched back from technology-assisted to in-person supervision; and (2) their preferred mode of supervision in the new normal of education.

‘Bloom's Taxonomy of Educational’ Objectives has been a mainstay of educational theory for over fifty years. In 2001 the original taxonomy was revised. This article uses Bloom's revised framework to design small groups in online classes. The author draws on his extensive experience in using small groups in face-to-face classes as well as fifteen years of experience with small groups in a variety of undergraduate and graduate online classes. He particularly addresses the need to design small groups that focus on Bloom's higher order category of „Create”. Suggestions for future research are also included.

The structure of conversation is a subject of many empirical researches along the Conversational Analytical point of view. Scholars have agreed that nonverbal signals which are called regulators act as a kind of traffic signals that aid in the flow of interactions. This paper studies the use of nonverbal regulators in Hausa social interactions, through the use of data consisting of natural face-to-face interactions taken from multiple settings. The research discovers that Hausa peoples’ interaction, especially in face-to-face settings, is marred with different gestures and postures acting as conversational regulators. Beyond regulating the interaction, these gestures and postures contribute to meaning making and influence communication outcomes.

This study compared the challenges of 20 education supervisors in executing technology-assisted and in-person supervision. These supervisors oversee the curriculum articulation for over 200,000 Filipino learners in 85 Philippine public schools. Results showed that technology-assisted supervision (Mn=3.18; Md=3.26) outscored in-person supervision (Mn=2.88; Md=2.95), with the former mode of supervision obtaining higher perceived challenges than the latter. However, the Wilcoxon Signed Ranks Test found an insignificant difference in their degrees of challenges when grouped according to the mode of supervision used (p-value=.191>.05), indicating the need to further explore the supervisors’ experiences to improve their supervision quality.

There are many ways to describe and recognize the human face. The paper shows one of them - the feature based method. It also considers usefulness of the face geometrical measurements in recognition and also the geometrical dependence on the features. The paper treats on the feature points detection and takes into consideration six of them, which are: two eyes, two eyebrows, nose and lips. It shows a detailed algorithm of the proposed method and describes its advantages and disadvantages. It also describes a filtering, feature points extraction and gives formulas for calculation of a face likeness coordinates. At the very end it concludes with experiments and examples of the proposed method.

Opis:
Facial emotion recognition (FER) is an important topic in the fields of computer vision and artificial intelligence owing to its significant academic and commercial potential. Nowadays, emotional factors are important as classic functional aspects of customer purchasing behavior. Purchasing choices and decisions making are the result of a careful analysis of the product advantages and disadvantages and of affective and emotional aspects. This paper presents a novel method for human emotion classification and recognition. We generate seven referential faces suitable for each kind of facial emotion based on perfect face ratios and some classical averages. The basic idea is to extract perfect face ratios for emotional face and for each referential face as features and calculate the distance between them by using fuzzy hamming distance. To extract perfect face ratios, we use the point landmarks in the face then sixteen features will be extract. An experimental evaluation demonstrates the satisfactory performance of our approach on WSEFEP dataset. It can be applied with any existing facial emotion dataset. The proposed algorithm will be a competitor of the other proposed relative approaches. The recognition rate reaches more than 90%.

The author analyses two specific communicative events within the political discourse in the current work. The analysis involves a dialogue between two politicians who meet face to face in a TV studio and the subsequent communication taking place on the Internet after the dialogue was made public. The utilization of offensive communicative strategies is a typical feature in political media communication where a communicating party attacks the communication counterpart with the intention of challenging his/her positive face and emphasizing his/her negative character traits in front of potential voters, while at the same time emphasizing his/her own positive values. For this reason, the author analyses the individual strategies employed by politicians with this intention in a particular communicative event. The work provides an entire chapter dealing with strategies used by participants in an Internet discussion. In this case, the communication takes place among speakers who do not know each other, so the aim of the work is to investigate whether attacks against one’s face take place even in this kind of communication, and if so, what personality traits of the communicants are attacked.

The aim of this study was to analyse the occurrence and size of false heartwood in beech timber over the lower and upper log faces. The research was carried out on 350 beech trunks where the presence of false heartwood was found on at least one of the log faces. The research material came from the Jarosław and Lesko Forest District (the Regional Directorate of the State Forests (RDSF) in Krosno) and the Pińczów Forest District (RDSF Radom). The following measurements were taken on selected logs: the mean bottom diameter, the mean upper diameter, the length of the analysed trunks, the maximum diameter of the false heartwood at both ends. As a result of the research, it was found that the maximum diameter of false heartwood on the beech log faces ranges from 30% to 40%, and a statistical test showed no significant difference in the extent of the defect between the lower and the upper face (t = -0.389; df = 612; p-value = 0.697). An analysis of the presence of the examined feature on the log faces showed that there were cases in which false heartwood appeared only over the lower face or only over the upper one. It was also noted that almost half of the examined logs had a larger diameter of the defect over the upper face than over the lower one. This study also examined the existence of a correlation between the diameter of the log face, log length and the percentage of the defect. The statistical test showed no significant correlation for both the lower and the upper face and the log length.

The face detection problem is the first part of user identification systems. The success of identification depends of effectiveness of face detection and localization. The are many popular methods for face detection, but not all of them are useful in real-time or on-line face recognition. The proposed hybrid method is useful for this kind of systems and creates possibility to build and develop a practical system for people identification. This method uses a skin detection algorithm with HSV colourspace. Verification of the potential area is performed by face template matching with the eyes image pattern.
Pierwszym elementem systemu identyfikacji użytkownika jest zagadnienie detekcji twarzy. Rezultat identyfikacji zależy od skuteczności procedury detekcji i lokalizacji twarzy. Istnieje wiele popularnych metod detekcji twarzy, które można podzielić na dwie grupy: (i) bazujące na detekcji koloru skóry, (ii) wykorzystujące dopasowanie wzorca. Do detekcji koloru skóry wykorzystuje się jeden z modeli barw, np. RGB, HSV, YCbCr, a następnie weryfikuje się czy wybrany obszar jest twarzą. W systemach dopasowania wzorca należy przeszukać cały obraz porównując fragmenty do wzorca. Te metody są czasochłonne i wymagające dużej mocy obliczeniowej. Większość z tych metod nie jest użytecznych w systemach typu on-line lub czasu rzeczywistego ze względu na czas obliczeń. Zaproponowana hybrydowa metoda jest użyteczna w tego typu systemach i daje możliwość budowy i rozwoju praktycznych systemów identyfikacji osób. Wykorzystuje ona elementy wspomnianych metod w taki sposób, aby skrócić czas obliczeń. Po wstępnej selekcji potencjalnych obszarów mogących zawierać twarz, weryfikacja następuje przy wykorzystaniu wzorca oczu, co znacznie skraca czas obliczeń.

Cutting forces during face milling are investigated intensively analytically and experimentally. Some of previous approaches to cutting forces determination consider only main (tangential) cutting force component, and according to this define cutting power. The experimental investigations were performed during face milling with a goal to determine models of cutting force versus cutter revolution. Different models were determined according to the cutter approach to the workpiece during cutting angle of revolution.

Using the extended Huygens–Fresnel principle and Rayleigh scattering theory, optical trapping of the low index of refraction particles using a focused Gaussian Schell-model (GSM) non-vortex beam, a focused GSM vortex beam, and two face-to-face focused GSM vortex beams have been studied. The results demonstrate that the focused GSM non-vortex beam cannot capture the low index of refraction particles, however, the focused GSM vortex beam can be a two-dimensional trap of particles in the z-axis, and the transverse gradient force Fgrad,x and the trapping equilibrium region increase as the topological charge m increases. As the focal length f or the refractive index of particles np decreases, the radiation forces increase and the trapping ability also enhances. To trap the low index particles in three-dimensional space, we adopt that the two face-to-face focused GSM vortex beams can be used to construct an optical potential well. The transverse gradient force of two face-to-face focused GSM vortex beams is twice that of a single GSM vortex beam. The limit of the radius for the low index of refraction particles that were stably captured has also been determined. The obtained results provide valuable information for trapping and manipulating the low index of refraction particles using GSM vortex beams, which may be applied in micromanipulation, biotechnology, nanotechnology and so on.

The aim of the paper is to analyse two Spanish greeting formulas derivated from the atelic predicate besar las manos (y los pies) ‘to kiss the hands (and feet)’, which, despite their apparent formal resemblance, came to codify totally opposite socio-pragmatic values. Through the systematic search in epistolary texts until the beginnings of the 20th century we will try to find (i) the socio-pragmatic factors that play the most important role in each type of greeting; (ii) the paradigmatic origin of each formula, and (iii) their sociocultural distribution.

Wraz z postępem cywilizacyjnym i rozwojem techniki proces komunikowania się ludzi uległ zasadniczej zmianie. Sieć internetowa podbiła współczesny świat, doprowadzając do powstania wielu pozytywnych zjawisk, dzięki którym łatwiej jest funkcjonować we wciąż zmieniającym się społeczeństwie. Jednym z najistotniejszych problemów współczesnego człowieka, wynikającym z nieograniczonych możliwości Internetu, jest zanik umiejętności komunikacji interakcyjnej. Zwykła rozmowa face to face stała się poważnym problemem społeczeństwa sieciowego, w którym kontakty z przyjaciółmi coraz częściej podtrzymywane są w sposób wirtualny. Problem ten ma ogromne znacznie dla całości społeczeństwa, gdyż osłabia relacje towarzyskie i rodzinne, rzutując na całokształt życia człowieka. Wpływ sieci na przemiany kulturowe i społeczne przeanalizowany został w różnych aspektach, a niniejszy referat jest próbą zwrócenia uwagi, w jaki sposób korzystanie z sieci internetowej wpływa na bezpośrednie kontakty społeczne.

This study examines the life of Chinese students studying in the Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) during the COVID-19 pandemic and identifies students’ most preferred educational method during the pandemic and the most effective educational method post pandemic. A month-long quantitative survey was conducted, supplemented by a qualitative survey. Online educational method (OEM) was the most preferred. While students hoped for the face-to-face educational method (FEM) post pandemic, they also wanted OEM to expand because of their improved awareness about it and having experienced its advantages. Thus, OEM could potentially be the most effective educational method for Chinese students.

W artykule zaprezentowano algorytm umożliwiający w pełni automatyczną detekcję charakterystycznych obszarów na termogramach zawierających twarze pacjentów w projekcji przedniej. Algorytm prawidłowo wykrywa wymagane obszary niezależnie od położenia głowy w obrazie oraz od jej obrotu. Po prawidłowej detekcji jest przeprowadzany automatyczny pomiar wartości średniej, minimalnej i maksymalnej ich temperatury. W końcowej części artykułu zaprezentowano przykładowe zastosowanie metody do wstępnej detekcji typu i przebiegu bólu głowy.
The algorithm enabling fully automatic detection of characteristic areas of the face on thermograms captured in the anterior projection is presented in the paper. Development and application of medical thermography is also discussed. There are given different types of headaches and methods for their analysis. Regions of: forehead (defined as CL,CP), eye-sockets (defined as OL,OP) and maxillary sinuses (defined as NL,NP) are assumed to be the areas medically essential for headache diagnosis. Thermograms were obtained from thermovision cameras AGEMA 590 and ThermaCam S65. The algorithm detects correctly the required head areas independently of the head position in the picture and its rotation within the range -50 to +50 degrees. Methods of mathematical morphology, active contour, template and Hough transform were used for the analysis. After the correct detection there was taken the automatic measurement of the area of the regions as well as their mean, minimum and maximal temperature. At the end of the paper there is presented an exemplary application of the algorithm for preliminary diagnosis of the type and the course of a headache. The results of segmentation of the face areas are given. The algorithm also makes it possible to analyse the given set of thermograms without necessity of modifying the operation parameters. The set of analysed images after adding translation and rotation includes above 4000 thermograms. The algorithm was developed and tested in Matlab environment.

In modern machining industry, the use of computer software is an integral element in the design of technological processes. This work aims to present possibilities for optimization of milling operations with the use of commercial software designed especially for that use. A face milling operation of an aluminium flange was chosen for this study. Several different optimization strategies were described and their results shown, analysed and discussed. The effect of variable radial depth of cut on cutting force values in milling processes was reflected upon. Additionally, further research involving comparison of experiment results with simulation was proposed. It was proven that correct optimization strategy can reduce machining time for the analysed face milling operation about 37% without exceeding imposed process parameter constraints.
