Opis:: Autorka analyzuje druhé vydání knihy, napsané až ke konci života Josefa Jungmanna a vydané r. 1845 pod názvem Náuka o výmluvnosti prozaické, básnické i řečnické se sbírkou příkladů v nevázané a vázané řeči. Popisuje komplexní Jungmannovy přístup k jazyku, tradiční pojetí slohu (vysoký, prostřední a nízký), řečnictví, členění textu, frazeologii atd. Považuje ji za první stylistiku a učebnici slohu i rétoriky, i když je to smíšená učebnice s cvičebnicí, ve které navíc najdeme metodické návody a instrukce pro učitele v oblasti výuky řeči.
The author analyses the second edition of the book, written towards the end of Josef Jungmann's life and published in 1845 under the title Náuka o výmluvnosti prozaické, básnické i řečnické se sbírkou příkladů v nevázané a vázané řeči (The Doctrine of Eloquence in Prose, Poetry and Speech, with a collection of examples in unbound and bound speech). It describes Jungmann's comprehensive approach to language, traditional concepts of style (high, middle and low), oratory, text structure, phraseology, etc. It is considered to be the first stylistic and rhetorical textbook on style and rhetoric, although it is a mixed textbook with an exercise book, which additionally contains methodological guidelines and instructions for teachers in the field of teaching speech.

Opis:: In Czech, modern biblical translation begins in the early 20th century. (The attribute “modern” indicates here the distance to the older tradition of Czech biblical translation from the Middle Ages to the 19th century). Since then, sixteen whole New Testaments and ten whole Old Testaments have been translated and published (which also means nine new whole Bibles) in the Czech language. However, the expert reflection of the Czech new biblical style (or modern biblical language) is still quite insignificant. Generally speaking, the language of modern Bible translations is characterized, among other things, by considerable volatility, internal contrastivity, “extreme markedness” of different types. The article focuses on one partial aspect of “extreme markedness”, in particular, the unconscious comicality of some places in Czech biblical texts. In the paper, four examples are presented and interpreted (Mt 9,16; L 13,7; Apc 2,7; Mt 10,10), taken from four important modern Czech biblical translations (Catholic Czech Bible from the early 20th century; Czech ecumenical translation; Catholic liturgical translation; evangelical Bible of the 21st Century). These examples show how the specific treatment of stylistic means of the Czech language has the potential to give rise to a comic effect (unintended by the translator) among readers/listeners. The author of the article notes that such extremely stylistically problematic places occur across all modern Czech translations of the Scripture. In the background of these stylistically defective places there are psychological and social reasons, given paradoxically by the fact that the biblical text belongs to the sacral sphere. It is thus desirable that the authors of future Biblical translations and critics of translations consciously and intensively try to shape and cultivate the Czech new biblical style (which, even after a hundred years of its existence, is still characterized by considerable instability).

Opis:: The article deals with one specific approach towards the language (speech) culture (jazyková kultura), which links this discipline with stylistics. The approach is deeply rooted in the Czech context, namely in the functional approaches towards language developed since the 1920-1930s by members of the Prague School and still widely used. The field of interest of this discipline can be divided into four main spheres: 1) present-day situation and 2) possibilities of influencing A. language and B. speech (langue and parole in the established Saussurean terminology, in other words - system and usage). In university courses described in the article, the focus is on the 2A and 2B types - the materials examined in seminars are mainly various attempts at influencing language in both above-mentioned respects, i.e. system and usage. Although various present-day materials dominate, materials from previous centuries, e.g. by Jan Hus (15th century), are also used to illustrate approaches towards such problems in the past. The main aim of the courses is to understand better 1) function, 2) methods and 3) theoretical background presented in the investigated materials and to make qualified theoretical conclusions about them, rather than to support or reject directly the opinions expressed in the materials. Attention is therefore paid above all to a description and analysis of all of the above-mentioned three points, which links the discipline of language (speech) cultivation to stylistics, but also to other disciplines (e.g. sociolinguistics). The students, as future qualified experts in the Czech language, should then be better prepared for issues they may face in their future professional career (teachers, language experts etc.), when asked to express a qualified and reliable opinion of some phenomena in modern Czech.

Opis:: The article deals with generał problems conceming specific means of expression from the diachronic point of view, using Common Czech (obecna ćeStina) as an example. It is especially emphasized that during the analysis a complex approach is of particular impor- tance, morę than from the synchronic point of view, also with regard to stylistic examina- tions. When scholars focusing on this particular discipline choose their theoretical background, they should also take into consideration concepts and definitions of Common Czech from both linguistic and sociolinguistic points of view in various periods. They should also choose only relevant means of expression, with sufficient frequency. Furthermore, they need to find texts the stylistic norm of which provides an opportunity to use Common Czech, to some extent or fully (today as well as in the past). Ali these aspects are significant, although their hierarchy may be varied; using identical materiał, it is thus possible to arrive at different generalizations.

Opis:: This article is a part of a large project which aim is a new, corpus-based grammar of contemporary Czech language. It deals with connectives that express meanings from the sphere of time and tense, particularly with their combinations (compound connectives), and with stylistic and pragmatic properties of them. We consider the connective kdyź as a centre of this group of compound connectives and try to differ functions of combinations like aź kdyź; prave kdyź; tehdy, kdyź; kdyź potom; kdyź jeśte; vźdycky kdyź; etc. It is inte- resting to study the interference between temporal semantics and causal, conditional, con- cessive, as well as other meanings. As we have today large amount of data at our disposal (thanks to the Czech National Corpus), we are able to study different distribution of temporal connectives (and their combinations) in the pattems of fimctional styles and in va- rious text types and genres (scientific texts, professional instructions, economic and sport reports and commentaries, interviews, fairy tales or novels, etc.).

Opis:: Artykuł stanowi analizę napisów publicznych postrzeganych jako swoiste miniteksty. Funkcjonują one w przestrzeni publicznej, są w dużym stopniu sformalizowane, szablonowe, utrwalone i rozpoznawalne społecznie. Zaprezentowana analiza pragmatyczna i stylistyczna objęła elementy językowe napisów. Poszczególne napisy publiczne zostały potraktowane jako akty mowy według typu dyrektywności, tj. zakazy, nakazy, prośby, ostrzeżenia i pozwolenia. Materiał poddany analizie został zebrany w przestrzeni publicznej Pragi – pochodzi z tabliczek, wywieszek, kartek, nalepek czy przycisków umieszczonych na drzwiach, oknach, bramach, słupach, wiatach, ścianach budynków itp.
This article contributes to the study of public inscriptions perceived as a specific kind of mini-text. They function in the public space and are highly formalised, stencilled, fixed and socially recognisable. The pragmatic and stylistic analysis presented here includes linguistic elements of the inscriptions. Individual public inscriptions are treated as speech acts according to the type of directivity, i.e. prohibitions, injunctions, requests, warnings and permissions. The analysed research material was collected in the public space of Prague, and it comes from placards, posters, cards, stickers or buttons placed on doors, windows, gates, poles, bus shelters, building walls, etc.
