August 29, 1952, in Maverick Concert Hall, Woodstock: a historic event takes place. The pianist David Tudor closes and opens the piano lid three times, without touching the keyboard itself, during the premiere performance of John Cage’s new composition. This piece, called 4′33″ has been written for a “silent piano.” It is a composition that is NOT to be played! Critics and the audience find he joke poor. Today, depending on the individual point of view, 4′33″ might be interpreted in hundreds of different ways.

Kompozycja zatytułowana „4’33” napisana jest na „milczący fortepian”. To utwór, którego się NIE gra! Dla krytyków i publiczności żart jest kiepski. Dziś, w zależności od indywidualnego punktu widzenia „4’33” można interpretować na setki sposobów.

In this essay I attempt to analyse Joseph Conrad’s ‘autobiography’ - as it is presented in Some Reminiscences - with particular reference to the enduring cultural patterns that it exhibits. According to the configurationist or “culture and personality” approach elaborated by American anthropologists such as Ruth Benedict and Ralph Linton, patterns of behaviour transmitted within particular cultural groups permanently configure the personality model of its members both at the level of everyday behaviour and at the level of ideal patterns. This is confi rmed by an analysis of Conrad’s autobiography, in which the writer draws on the ideal patterns of the culture of the Polish eastern borderlands (which he acquired during the process of socialization) - not only in order to analyse his own personality, but also to govern his behaviour in completely different cultural contexts. Even more interestingly, these behavioural patterns have confi gured the particular model of the world that is reflected in the very structure of Conrad’s works. In this connection the influence of the gawęda or ‘Polish nobleman’s tale’ would seem to be indisputable. It is not so much that Conrad alludes to this literary convention in his autobiographical reminiscences, but rather that he uses it to re-create the model (based on cultural patterns) of the imagination of a Polish nobleman from the eastern borderlands. Moreover, this culturally determined writing strategy is used in Conrad’s other works.

This article presents the research problems addressed in military anthropology. The central research hypothesis is a theoretical-cognitive problem concerning the object of cognition of military anthropology. In this sense, the two main understandings of military anthropology, American and Russian, are shown. Military anthropology develops an interest in culture as an area of struggle, competition, and combat. The article consists of three parts. The first part explains the theoretical issues and the historical development of military anthropology. The second part presents the Russian tradition in the development of that discipline. The third part presents the Polish tradition in which military anthropology is an auxiliary science of security sciences.

Each of the artefacts mentioned in the title is an exemplification of products of the anthropological “Other”. Each of them comes from a distinct geographical region and represents an entirely different culture. However, all of them have been connected together in the Western culture realia as a result of a particular type of displacements. The first displacement involved their physical migration – first to European museums of natural history and ethnological museums. The next one resulted in their emergence on the market of exotic “oddities” whereas yet another displacement located them within the conceptual framework delimited by the artistic discourse. This last displacement shows that it is very difficult to understand or “translate” one culture into another because the conceptual framework of the “translator” is always determined by their own culture.

The aim of the present article is to analyze the relationship between the city and the protagonists of Giuseppe Culicchia’s texts. The methodological perspective is that of cultural anthropology, in particular the concept of mente locale, discussed by Franco La Cecla. Mente locale, as a relationship between space and human mind, is vital in the act of getting lost in space (perdersi), which leads to getting to know it (orientarsi) and finally initiating the profound relationship based on emotivity. Culicchia’s texts are set in Turin, and the study points out the different ways of perception of the city. The analyzed texts represents the gradual acquisition of knowledge about the city that corresponds to the theoretical thesis that is how the anthropology of space and place illustrates the conceptual and material dimensions of space which is central to the production of social life, bringing classics of cultural anthropology together with new theoretical approaches.

In an interview with Didier Eribon, Claude Lévi-Strauss admitted that he wished he had written Joseph Conrad’s books. It seems that once he even started writing a “Conradian” novel entitled Tristes Tropiques, but the only known fragment of this novel would seem to be the description of a sunset, which has become part of another book of the same title containing reminiscences from his journeys. In what way, then, did Conrad infl uence this unusual book by Lévi-Strauss? There are certainly similarities between the works of both writers. Apart from a similarity of literary form and cultural substance, we can fi nd a unique “optical experience” (Dariusz Czaja) in their descriptions of sunsets, which I interpret as a substructure of their studies of the world, culture and human knowledge.

The text is an introduction to psychological anthropology, a subdiscipline of culturalanthropology that looks into interactions linking cultural phenomena with human psychological processes. The history of the concept of psychological anthropology and its definitions is discussed and then juxtaposed with explanations of the concepts of ethno-psychology, cultural psychology, and cognitive anthropology. The discussion is contextualized by the history of the subdiscipline itself, which over the last 150 years has been developed and co-developed – often in a complex and convoluted way – by subsequent anthropological approaches and trends, with which it has at times been identified.
Tekst stanowi wprowadzenie do antropologii psychologicznej, subdyscypliny antropologii kulturowej zajmującej się interakcjami łączącymi zjawiska kulturowe z procesami psychologicznymi człowieka. Omówiono historię pojęcia antropologii psychologicznej i jej definicje, a następnie zestawiono ją z objaśnieniami pojęć etnopsychologii, psychologii kulturowej i antropologii poznawczej. Dyskusję kontekstualizuje historia samej subdyscypliny, która na przestrzeni ostatnich 150 lat była rozwijana i współrozwijana – często w sposób złożony i zawiły – przez kolejne podejścia i nurty antropologiczne, z którymi czasami była utożsamiana.

Interdisciplinary studies on disability are conducted in the world by scholars from different disciplines and sub-disciplines, including special education. This article deals with an analysis of the evolution of the concept of disability studies and its’ implementation in anthropology that was narrowed to cultural anthropology, primarily of American roots with references to British social anthropology. The basic question, which I answer from the perspective of the cultural anthropologists, is formulated as follows: why cultural anthropology is important in the disability studies? I give answers in the context of: ontological, epistemological, rhetorical and political issues. The paper revisits two theories from the cultural anthropology. The first theory is by Bronisław Malinowski, and the second one by Karl Homann. Malinowski criticizes economism and moralism. I present further stages of this criticism, with special importance placed on the concept of homo oeconomicus. Malinowski demonstrates how moral norms are implemented in primitive cultures by means of magic, cults, customs and rituals and rites. Malinowski also argues for the significance of cultural institutions in stabilizing the functioning of primitive communities. These institutions sheltered the communities from the kind of crises that are also experienced in the present times, thus, giving the older schools of thought in cultural anthropology their deserving place within the contemporary thought.

Another important section is devoted to Malinowski’s analysis of how cultural institutions were important for stable functioning of primitive communities. They sheltered those communities form crisis of the kind that we experience today. The second theory is economical ethics of K. Hofman, one of the newest achievements of German business ethics. So works of cultural anthropology are worth being read again.

Objectives: The objective was to carry out a qualitative analysis of the Spanish health system in the context of Covid-19 pandemic, in order to detect inefficiencies and create a model capable of tackling them. Methods: This research was carried out in five public Spanish hospitals, using the following qualitative perspectives: ethnography and the grounded theory. The data were collected through the techniques of information gathering, including 79 observation sessions in the hospitals with an average duration of 1:44:10, 410 documentary materials (official and unofficial records, photos and videos taken in the hospitals) and formal in-depth interviews about the quality of the Spanish health system (n=26), with an average duration of 47 minutes and 4 seconds. Findings: The results provided answers not only to the research questions formulated throughout the work but also led to the determination of the contextual conditions of health organizations on the basis of a plausible explanation of the events that occurred during the COVID-19 pandemic. Conclusions: The findings of this research, which analyzed some of the events that occurred in the COVID-19 pandemic in Spain, suggest that it is necessary to create a true organizational culture oriented to the common good, introducing into health organizations people responsible for the other.

The aim of the article is to look at the thoughts of one of the most prominent Polish sociologists - Florian Znaniecki - and to ask the question to what extent they may be useful for present-day social and migration studies. The hypothesis furthered is that migration literature should go beyond the seminal book on Polish peasants in America by Znaniecki and Thomas and focus more on the Polish sociologist’s early thoughts. The article emphasizes the importance of cultural anthropology and culturalism not only in migration studies but also in a broad range of social studies, including the assessment of post-communist transition.

Today’s anthropology attempts to relate the historicity and culturality of its concepts, viewpoints, and methods to the historicity and culturality of what is under investigation. Anthropology examines the findings of the human sciences and develops a critique of itself based on historical and cultural philosophy, thereby paving the way for the investigation of new questions and issues. At the heart of these efforts lies a restlessness of mind that cannot be stilled. Research in anthropology is not limited to certain cultural contexts or single epochs. Reflections on the integral historicity and culturality of the research enable the discipline to leave behind the Euro-centricity of the human sciences and to focus on the unresolved problems of the present and the future. This aim implies skepticism toward all-encompassing and universal anthropological interpretations, such as those occasionally found in biological science, for example. Anthropology is not a single discipline. It touches on many different sciences and disciplines, including philosophy. Speaking about anthropology in the humanities and social sciences, we have to consider the following five paradigms: 1) anthropology of evolution and hominization; 2) philosophical anthropology developed in Germany; 3) historical anthropology and the history of mentalities, initiated by historians in France and taking its cue from the Annales-School; 4) the American tradition of cultural anthropology, and 5) finally historical cultural anthropology. These paradigms also provide the basis for educational anthropology.
Dzisiejsza antropologia próbuje powiązać historyczność i kulturę pojęć, poglądów i metod, którymi się zajmuje jako nauka z historycznością i kulturą przedmiotów badań. Antropologia bada odkrycia nauk humanistycznych i tworzy autokrytykę na podstawie filozofii historycznej i kulturowej, tym samym torując drogę dla badań nad powstającymi pytaniami i kwestiami. W sercu tych wysiłków leży nieposkromiony niepokój umysłu. Badania w dziedzinie antropologii nie ograniczają się do określonych kontekstów kulturowych czy pojedynczych epok. Refleksje dotyczące integralnej historyczności i kulturalności badań umożliwiają dyscyplinie odejście od eurocentryczności nauk humanistycznych i skoncentrowanie się na nierozwiązanych problemach teraźniejszości i przyszłości. Tak określony cel implikuje sceptycyzm wobec wszystkich, obejmujących cały przekrój zagadnień i powszechnych interpretacji antropologicznych, przykładowo tych spotykanych w naukach biologicznych. Antropologia nie jest dyscypliną funkcjonującą w izolacji od innych dziedzin nauki. Dotyczy zagadnień z wielu różnych nauk i dyscyplin, w tym filozofii. Mówiąc o antropologii nauk humanistycznych i społecznych należy rozważyć pięć następujących paradygmatów: 1) antropologię ewolucji i hominizacji; 2) antropologię filozoficzną opracowaną w Niemczech; 3) antropologię historyczną i historię mentalności, zapoczątkowane przez historyków we Francji i czerpiące inspiracje ze Szkoły Annales; 4) amerykańską tradycję antropologii kulturowej, 5) wreszcie antropologię historyczno- kulturową. Powyższe paradygmaty stanowią również podstawę antropologii edukacyjnej.

The growing popularity of archaeology and the amassment of new archaeological researches compelled archaeologist to make an interpretations based on different domains of humanistic sciences. This interdisciplinary studies allow to look at the problem of reconstructing the past from a different perspectives. Since most significant issues had multiple causes, interdisciplinary studies provide a more comprehensive understanding of issues. The cooperation of different domains of sciences (archaeology, ethnology and cultural anthropology) is essential for studying the past. It is particularly important for the Brazilian Amazon where the great part of cultural processes could not be seen in an archaeological context.

The author limns an intellectual portrait of the cultural specialist and anthopologist Wojciech Józef Burszta (1957–2021), who died at the beginning of 2021. Burszta’s reflections centered on the “post-anthropological” shape of contemporaneity. Such thinking involved, on the one hand, relinquishing the idea of culture as a cohesive, harmonious system (ideas close to the symbolic anthropology of Clifford Geertz), and on the other, the increasing awareness of “being in culture,” of the possession and appropriation of culture by the community, individuals, and institutions (Burszta described these processes as “metaculture”). In addition to popular culture and pop nationalism, another important area of interest for Burszta was literature—an essentially anti-systemic reverse of anthropological reflections on reality.

The article summarizes the history of the academic reflection on the culture research in Czech Republic from the beginnings of the národopis in the late 19th century till contemporary reflection on culture under the brand of anthropology. It covers the difficulties with defining the field of the research as well as the discipline name problem. The plurality of disciplines we can now observe in Czech cultural studies is explained in context of the social and political circumstances, especially the belonging to the soviet universum after the 2nd World War. Finally the article tries to explain the great difficulty with application of the Western, especially British, cultural studies into the postcommunist intellectual milieu.

Opis:
The article is dedicated to culinary practices in Stanisław Ignacy Witkiewicz's drama. They are considered in relation to the idea of metaphysical insatiability and a “creative hunger” of exceptional individuality. Culinary tastes that dominate in Witkacy's writings are being ana-lysed on the bases of the critical approaches of Lévi Strauss and Barthes as well as Malinow-ski's important works on cultural anthropology (Argonauts of the Western Pacific, 1922; The Sexual Life of Savages in North-Western Melanesia, 1929). The article concentrates also on the works of some well-known representatives of the inter¬ war period (Čapek, Schulz, Kafka) that are relevant to the subject.

The article promotes the argument that anthropological or ethnological knowledge is primarily produced through ethnographies that present fieldwork experience. As publications that appear after returning home, they provide the social sciences with the most recent information about the present reality. Moreover, that is where we can find new methodological approaches and new theoretical concepts. Our contemporary experience in such a fast-changing world shows the uselessness of the formerly applied analytical notions, forcing us to search for a new form of description and new interpretative categories. The article is actually a survey of the best known fieldwork monographs presented through theories, schools and trends in cultural and social anthropology that have been constituted or overcome by these very monographs, which are milestones in over a century of ethnological/anthropological research. As the last ones are from the 21st century, they present not only the newest research results, but also the most up-to-date methodologies.

In my short essay, I wanted to address the issues of Andrzej Żuławski’s „Shamanka”. Especially in the context of critical voices that consider this work to be iconoclastic. I was especially interested in the issue of transgression, understood as the ability to defend against the system. The essence of taboo collapse, also seen in other artist- -directors, exploits the potential of primordial violence, coming closer to relations that are not conditioned by economics or matter, but purely Nature’s laws, based on predators and victims, whose sources of behavior and characteristics pass. To the next stages of human evolution, only in fuzzy clarity. Because of new environment conditions, caused by culture, then civilization. Hence the great metaphorical values of the heroes of Żuławski’s production, and above all the character of „Italians”. The film’s content is her relationship with the anthropologist Michal, fascinated by archaic epochs, but with a completely different approach to them. Similar transgressive meaning, though on a different personal background, can be seen in Italian director Paolo Pasolini’s reminiscence, which may be recalled during the screening. Equally controversial was his last venture – Salo 120 days of Sodomy – a free adaptation of the novel of the Marquis de Sade. I set up both films to signal the polemic approach of both directors to postmodern societies.

In the first part of the article the traditional meaning of the ritual is analysed. Then, the ritual is presented in the light of transactional analysis. Finally, the author discusses similarities and differences in different concepts of the ritual. The article does not attempt to address the complexity of this concept; its aim is to contribute to the discussion on the interdisciplinary nature of transactional analysis. The author’s aim is to exemplify the possibilities of applying this theory in humanities and social sciences.

A member of the generation of student revolt ’68, Alain Finkielkraut is thought to be one of the most prominent intellectuals in France, taking part in public debates on several issues essential for Europe and the world. His assays, articles and books may be read as a complex commentary with a sound humanistic background to the condition of western culture as well as to current socio-political events. Our article focuses on revealing theoretical grounding of Finkielkraut’s reflection in the philosophies of Emmanuel Lévinas and Hannah Arendt. We attempt to reconstruct the way Finkielkraut employs his critical apparatus built on their thought to the field of educational practices in order to present the specific perspective of educational research and to contribute to the knowledge produced by widely understood critical pedagogic.

In the article I intend to describe the way in which “scientific” categories of race and class are invented and transferred into public culture and subsequently instrumented in creating and maintaining imaginaries and practices of colonial and postcolonial power relations. I interpret colonialism and postcolonialism in a very broad context, as a continuum encompassing creation and recreation of the contemporary rules and phenomena that are related to the functioning of nation-state power, which in turn is shaped, as a set of ideas, by discourses of public culture. My arguments derive from anthropological research on social mobility and are illustrated with examples from Jamaica and the USA.

The paper is an attempt to present a model of an attitude towards strangers: getting to know, tolerating, accepting, and finally assimilating them, in terms of funeral rites, and thus of different religion. Such is a case manifested by an appearance of bustum type graves within the Przeworsk culture cemeteries in Wielkopolska (Greater Poland) in the Roman Iron Age.

Artykuł wprowadza w problematykę numeru, koncentrując się szczególnie na sekcji tematycznej: Etnografia sportu i e-sportu. Metodologiczne doświadczenia z badań terenowych. Redaktor zwraca uwagę na główne wątki rozważane we współczesnej literaturze przedmiotu, podkreślając relewantny dobór autorek/autorów i artykułów zgromadzonych we wspomnianej sekcji. Wskazane są także luki w literaturze naukowej dotyczące metodologii etnograficznych badań szeroko rozumianego sportu. Sekcja jest skromną próbą ich wypełnienia. Następnie redaktor wprowadza krótko w problematykę każdego z artykułów zawartych w tomie, zarówno z sekcji tematycznej, jak i sekcji varia.
This article introduces the subject of the thematic issue: The Ethnography of Sport and E-Sport: Methodological Experiences from the Fieldwork. The Editor points to the most crucial threads in the contemporary literature on the subject. He underlines the relevance of the authors and articles collected in this issue. Also indicated are gaps in the academic literature regarding the methodology of ethnographic research into broadly understood sport. The issue is a modest attempt to fulfill these gaps. The Editor also briefly recounts the contents of the articles, both from the thematic section and from the varia section.
