Opis:: Voluntary service as a phenomenon belonging to the sphere of social activity gets more and more popular in the last decade. This is proven, for example, by an increase in the number of voluntary service initiatives with a national and international range. A careful analysis of the phenomenon of voluntary service in Byelorussia allows one to state that the voluntary service movement in that country is getting ever stronger. With every year the number of volunteers grows, and their work is ever more conspicuous. Voluntary work is met with appreciation and approval in the Byelorussian society, especially among young people. Free voluntary work may be an important factor facilitating the development of non-government organizations, which is an important element of forming a democratic society.
Wolontariat, jako zjawisko aktywności społecznej, w ostatnim dziesięcioleciu staje się coraz bardziej popularny. Świadczy o tym chociażby wzrost liczby inicjatyw wolontaryjnych o zasięgu krajowym i międzynarodowym. Przyjrzenie się zjawisku wolontariatu na Białorusi pozwala stwierdzić, iż ruch wolontaryjny w tym państwie przybiera na sile. Z każdym rokiem liczba wolontariuszy rośnie, a ich działalność jest coraz bardziej dostrzegalna. Praca wolontaryjna coraz częściej spotyka się z uznaniem i aprobatą w białoruskim społeczeństwie, zwłaszcza wśród ludzi młodych. Dobrowolna, nieodpłatna praca ochotnicza może być jednym z ważnych czynników umożliwiających rozwój sektora organizacji pozarządowych, co jest ważnym elementem stanowienia się społeczeństwa demokratycznego.

Opis:: In the article the results are presented of the latest censuses carried out in Byelorussia in 1999, and in Lithuania and the Ukraine in 2001. The basic task of the study was to determine how big the Polish population was. The Byelorussian census showed 396 thousand, the Lithuanian one – 235 thousand, and the Ukrainian one – 144.1 thousand Poles. Altogether in the three mentioned countries bordering upon Poland the official census data showed 775.1 thousand Poles. This was 98.1 thousand fewer than the previous census carried out in the Soviet period (1989) showed. The author tries to explain the causes of this state of things. Earlier assessments done by Polish researchers showed that the data from Soviet censuses lowered the number of Poles and it was expected that the censuses carried out under new circumstances would show a considerably bigger Polish population. The results of these censuses did not confirm these research hypotheses. The constant decrease in the number of Poles in Byelorussia, Lithuania and the Ukraine results from assimilation processes that have been stimulated by social and economic changes. In the next part of the article the author tried to present the distribution of the Polish population according to the administrative units of the province or district level. A special attention was paid to the Vilnius district in Lithuania and the Grodno province in Byelorussia. In both these areas the Polish population tends to concentrate. On the other hand, the processes of atrophy of the Polish population go on in the Ukraine. This is due to the diffusion of the Polish population and its gradual sinking into the Ukrainian community.

Opis:: The Deportation of the Polish Population in the Light of the NKVD Directives and Testimonies of the Displaced Families. The Attempt at Comparative Analysis. The article was a result of belief in the need of detailed description of the deportation of the families whose relatives had been murdered by the troops of the Soviet security apparatus in Katyn and other places of the former USSR. The article is an attempt at the comparative analysis of the NKVD directives with the reports of the exiled. The author carried out multiple-hour interviews with the Katyn families and Siberian exiles who were deported to Kazakhstan in April 1940. Moreover, the author used the expansive literature of memoirs and diaries of those times. The text includes the aspect of displacement and journey of the families to the remote steppes of Kazakhstan. The author aimed at confronting official directives for the operational units of the NKVD carrying out displacements with the reality maintained in the memories of the exiled, and pointing to similarities and differences between the first and the second deportations. The author described in detail the act of the NKVD barging into the houses of the families subject to deportation, indicated the directives concerning the deportation which were frequently ignored by the functionaries of the Soviet security apparatus, presented the house searches and pointed to these NKVD behaviours which were unusual and beyond the routine procedures. The article also describes the transportation to railway stations and the detailed journey in freight cars. It also includes the aspects of meals, executing physiological needs, intimate hygiene and death during the long journey. In the closing part of the text, the author referred to the ongoing dispute between historians and the Siberian exiles concerning the numbers of people deported in 1940-1941. He shortly characterised the major publications on that topic and referred to the important studies of the ‘Karta’ Centre and the Institute of National Remembrance in the series of ‘The Index of the Repressed’ which aim, among others, at specifying the list of names of all Poles deported during the four great Soviet displacement actions.
