This article is a survey of Lipschitz\dywiz free Banach spaces and recent progress in the understanding of their structure. The results we present have been obtained in the last fifteen years (and quite often in the last five years). We give a self\dywiz contained presentation of the basic properties of Lipschitz\dywiz free Banach spaces and investigate some specific topics: non-linear transfer of asymptotic smoothness, approximation properties, norm\dywiz attainment. Section 5 consists mainly of unpublished results. A list of open problems with comentary is provided.

We present here a new method for approximating functions defined on superreflexive Banach spaces by differentiable functions with α-Hölder derivatives (for some 0 < α≤ 1). The smooth approximation is given by means of an explicit formula enjoying good properties from the minimization point of view. For instance, for any function f which is bounded below and uniformly continuous on bounded sets this formula gives a sequence of Δ-convex $C^{1,α}$ functions converging to f uniformly on bounded sets and preserving the infimum and the set of minimizers of f. The techniques we develop are based on the use of extended inf-convolution formulas and convexity properties such as the preservation of smoothness for the convex envelope of certain differentiable functions.

In this paper we consider the question of existence of measure valued solutions for neutral differential equations on Banach spaces when there is no mild solutions. We prove the existence of measure solutions and their regularity properties. We consider also control problems of such systems and prove existence of optimal feedback controls for some interesting a-typical control problems.

We prove that in separable Hilbert spaces, in $ℓ_{p}(ℕ)$ for p an even integer, and in $L_{p}[0,1]$ for p an even integer, every equivalent norm can be approximated uniformly on bounded sets by analytic norms. In $ℓ_{p}(ℕ)$ and in $L_{p}[0,1]$ for p ∉ ℕ (resp. for p an odd integer), every equivalent norm can be approximated uniformly on bounded sets by $C^[p]}$-smooth norms (resp. by $C^{p-1}$-smooth norms).

Let \(p\in(1,\infty)\) and \(I=(0,1)\); suppose that \(T\colon L_{p}(I)\rightarrow L_{p}(I)\) is a~compact linear map with trivial kernel and range dense in \(L_{p}(I)\). It is shown that if the Gelfand numbers of \(T\) decay sufficiently quickly, then the action of \(T\) is given by a series with calculable coefficients. The special properties of \(L_{p}(I)\) enable this to be established under weaker conditions on the Gelfand numbers than in earlier work set in the context of more general spaces.

We prove that for every infinite-dimensional Banach space X with a Fréchet differentiable norm, the sphere $S_X$ is diffeomorphic to each closed hyperplane in X. We also prove that every infinite-dimensional Banach space Y having a (not necessarily equivalent) $C^p$ norm (with $p ∈ ℕ ∪ {∞}$)$ is $C^p$ diffeomorphic to $Y \ {0}$.

We give a criterion ensuring that the elementary class of a modular Banach space \(E\) (that is, the class of Banach spaces, some ultrapower of which is linearly isometric to an ultrapower of \(E\)) consists of all direct sums \(E\oplus_m H\), where \(H\) is an arbitrary Hilbert space and \(\oplus_m\) denotes the modular direct sum. Also, we give several families of examples in the class of Nakano direct sums of finite dimensional normed spaces that satisfy this criterion. This yields many new examples of uncountably categorical Banach spaces, in the model theory of Banach space structures.

On présente une fonction continue f: c₀ → c₀ qui satisfait à une condition lipschitzienne par rapport à la mesure de non-compacité de Hausdorff (ou Kuratowski), mais telle que f n'est pas la somme d'une fonction dissipative et d'une fonction compacte. Cet exemple attache de l'importance au théorème d'existence de Sabina Schmidt (1989) pour des équations différentielles dans les espaces de Banach.

This paper investigates the notion of practical feedback stabilization of evolution equations satisfying some relaxed conditions in infinite-dimensional Banach spaces. Moreover, sufficient conditions are presented that guarantee practical stabilizability of uncertain systems based on Lyapunov functions. These results are applied to partial differential equations.
