Opis:
This paper constitutes an attempt to confront the image of the Arab community living in Poland with the self-image of this community. It is based on interviews and surveys conducted with the representatives of both groups (Arabs and Poles), which reveal some myths about Arabs most frequently repeated by Polish respondents, such as: ‘There are a lot of Arabs in Poland and they are everywhere’, ‘Arabs in Poland benefit from social welfare as in Western countries’, ‘Arabs (immigrants) are stealing jobs from Poles’, ‘When you buy a kebab, you settle an Arab’, ‘Arabs in Poland do not integrate with Poles’, ‘Arab means Muslim, Muslim means Arab’, ‘Arabs are the most unpopular nation in Poland’, and other widespread stereotypes relating to the Arab community. These myths and stereotypes were confronted with the results of the author of this paper’s own research, which undermines their legitimacy.

Opis:
The current international situation is characterised by increasing political unrests in the area of the Arab world. In many Middle-Eastern countries there occurred collapse of state structures and many-year civil wars broke out. Political chaos in the Arab world has been increasing for over a dozen years and it seems to be rather a result of structural flaws inherent in the political systems of countries in this region, rather than accidental events. These facts provoke to an attempt at deeper analysis of the circumstances and search for some general features. One of the immediately noticeable features of the situa-tion is that political anarchization concerns Arab republics, whereas monarchies are distinguished by significantly greater internal stability. The reasons for the downfall of republics are internal problems as well as conflicts with western powers. Also in this case one may notice political rowdiness of the republican leaders in Egypt, Iraq and Libya and compare it with more stable and responsible politics of monarchies. Generally pre-modern monarchial legalism in the Arab world turns out to be a more effective political idea than the rule of sovereignty of nations. This is a noteworthy fact, although it is contradictory to western political dogmas.

This paper looks into the piece by Constantine Manasses considering how it depicts the Arabs. It appears Manasses saw the Arabs primarily as bloody and cruel plunderers who invaded the Byzantine lands. Indeed, they won some of the fights against the Byzantines but eventually had to accept their superiority and concede defeat. It should also be noted that Constantine Manasses did not bring up religious themes when referring to the Arabs.

This paper deals with to the history of relations between the Bija with their neighbors. Bija were subjects of Ancient Egypt and Meroe. They are integrated into these societies without any problems and have been a vassal tribe of them. Beja were restless neighbors of the Roman Empire. They raided Upper Egypt during the III-V centuries AC. Attempts to establish a relationship with them like with the Berbers were unsuccessful. Particularly violent conflicts were a Bija with Christian states – Byzantium Empire, Nubia and Aksum. Some time Bija paid tribute to the Nubians and Axumites. Christianity did not get spread among them, Islam was adopted syncretic form after several centuries of contact with the Arabs. Islamization has been made possible thanks to the settlement of Arabs in the land Bija and participation in the Intercontinental trade. For all their neighbors were threatening nomadic Bija, which made raids to capture people in captivity and selling them into slavery. Bija attacked the Egyptian dominions of the Arab Caliphate, despite the fact that they were formally paid tribute to Arabs.

Opis:
Muḥammad Ibn Aḥmad Akansūs belongs to the most outstanding Moroccan writers of the 19th Century and was also very active in the social and political life of his times. He was a historian and religious writer, but in Morocco itself he is known above all as a poet, though his dīwān has not been edited until this day. Most of his poems are known from the works of other authors and from his own books devoted to history and religion. His most important work is without doubt the chronicle entitled Al-µayš al-ʻaramram al-ẖumāsī fi dawlat Mawlānā ʻAlī as-Siǧilmāsī (“Innumerable Fivefold Army or About the State of Our Lord ʻAlī as-Siǧilmāsī”). Furthermore he is the author of several treatises about Sufism (especially about the Tiǧāniyya brotherhood) and of an extensive collection of letters written to outstanding personalities of his times devoted mainly to religious problems. His historical, religious and literary output has until today not been presented in the West besides the book of É. Lévi-Provençal entitled Les historiens des chorfa. Essai sur la littérature historique et biographique au Maroc du XVIe au XXe siécle (Paris 1922).

Classical arabo-islamic culture. Basic issues The article begins with an attempt to define the concept of Arabic and Islamic culture. Therefore its main purpose is to present the beginnings of Islam, Islamic community (umma) and the basic elements of Islamic faith and their nature. The most significant feature of the Arab-Islamic culture is its strong connection with the Islamic law – sharia, based on the Koran and Sunna. For this reason the presentation of its principles takes an important place in this text. The Islamic law determines all sides of this civilisation in macro and micro scale. It plays a crucial role in the development of the state, but also in the behavior of the ordinary man. The other point of interest in this article is the development of sciences in the Islamic world in the classical period. The classical or Medieval Arabo-Islamic culture developed subsequently in a specific way. The reevaluation of this development is currently an important axis of analyses in Arabic and Islamic studies.

The paper discusses various aspects of Romanos III Argyros’ expedition in Syria, such as its objectives and route. It is argued that Romanos’ goal was to not just replace the Mirdāsids with Manṣūr Ibn Lu’lu’ in Aleppo, but to annex the city and then lend his support to the Ṭayyi’ in Palestine, thus profiting from Fāṭimid problems and eventually conquering Syria. The defeat of the Byzantines before they reached Fāṭimid territory allowed for the later amelioration of relations with Fāṭimids. A solution to the issue surrounding the personality of Ibn Dūqs is also presented.

This article attempts to reconstruct the image of Bedouin communities in the works of Wacław Seweryn Rzewuski. During his excursion in the Middle East, Rzewuski acquainted with Bedouins, gaining their trust and respect, which allowed him to get detailed knowledge of their culture and traditions, which he later described in his manuscript Concerning the horses of the Orient and those originating from oriental breeds. The analysis focuses on three issues: the way Rzewuski perceived Bedouin communities and interpersonal relations in the Arab world, his personal experiences and acquaintances with Bedouins, and the comparisons between Europe and the Arab world in terms of social life. The analysis is presented in a broader context – how Arabs were perceived in Europe and Poland in Rzewuski’s times and the fascination with the Orient in the Romanticism era.

This article concerns the medicine of the Arab world during its heyday from the Prophet Muhammad to the beginning of the 13th century and the emergence of European research centers. During the golden age of Islam, the medicine of this period developed rapidly. At that time, many therapies and drugs were created, used in a slightly changed form to this day. Without them, there would not be many discoveries in diseases, epidemics, surgeries, anatomy, dietetics, ophthalmology, or therapies. The article aims to show a cross-sectional division of medicine in the Islamic world from the 7th to the 13th century, outlining the most important achievements in this field.

The bilingual school tends to address both the national days of the Arabs and the national days of the Jews as a part of its multicultural perception. As aforementioned, these days are characterized as tense and complicated days in the school, both for the Arabs and for the Jews, because of the narratives and perceptions that they represent, which sometimes are contradictory and. Nevertheless, it is possible to see that the school addresses the different perceptions and narratives of each culture, with recognition of the difference and uniqueness of each one of them and with reinforcement of the commonalities between them. In this way, it gives hope and encourages the desire for a shared life between Jews and Arabs in Israel, which on the one hand includes the difference and on the other hand broadens the common denominator between the two groups. This article will describe the national days of Arabs and Jews in the bilingual school in Jerusalem. It will focus on the meaning of the days, their complexity, and the ways of coping and implementation in the framework of the school, with reference to the school perception.

The contemporary western political discourse is dominated by the conviction of the equality of cultures. This conviction is treated as a recent accomplishment of the leftist liberal trend of western societies. The following text indicates that this conviction may in certain cases be invalid. The person who shattered this concept was John Bagot Glubb. This British officer serving the British Empire in the Middle East since 1921 was the chief commander of the Jordan army in the period between 1939 and 1956. J. B. Glubb was a conservative member of an old noble family from the south of England and at the same time he was passionate about the Arabic culture – in particular about the life of the Bedouin. In contrast to many contemporary supporters of political correctness, he did not depreciate his own culture, but he showed genuine recognition of many features of the Arabic culture. He spent his whole life working to bring the West and the Arabs closer. Now one may accuse J.B. Glubb of numerous political mistakes, e.g., typically British paternalism, but nonetheless his life indicates that it was possible for an activist representing the conservative trend in the European culture to be a proponent of bringing cultures together

With the beginning of the Arab conquests and campaigns in the middle of the 7th century CE, Armenia fell under Arab domination becoming part of the Arab Caliphate within the next decade. The aim of the paper is to present what names were given to Muslims in what historical context, how these names reflected the perception of a different ethnoreligious community.
