Opis:
INTRODUCTION: A recent survey by the Association of Schools of Public Health in the European Region asserts that European public health programmes lack modernity and do not provide adequate leadership education. Aim of the study - to assess leadership competences in a group of Public Health students at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Medical University of Warsaw in Poland. MATERIAL AND METHODS: A total of 178 students: 84 third-year first-cycle students and 94 second-year secondcycle students of Public Health at the Faculty of Health Sciences of the Medical University of Warsaw, Poland. An 80% survey return rate; 153 women. Mean age 23.29 years (min. 22, max. 37, SD: 3.060).The PAPI method; voluntary participation; standardized anonymous Authentic Leadership Self-Assessment (SAP) questionnaire; 16 items on a Likert scale of 1 (completely disagree) to 5; four dimensions: 1. Self-awareness, 2. Ethics/morality, 3. Openness to feedback and 4. Transparency in relationships; high score: 16-20 points, low score: 15 points or less; Cronbach's alpha coefficient: 0.710; descriptive statistics. RESULTS: In the study group, 54% of students demonstrated a high level of leadership competences (16-20 points) in the dimension of Self-awareness (S). Most students obtained a low score (15 points or less) in the dimensions of: Ethics/morality - 55%, Openness to feedback - 58% and Transparency in relationships - 75%, which means a low level of the competences in question. CONCLUSIONS: The level of leadership skills in the study group was low, which is why, since the academic year 2017/2018, the first- and second- cycle study programmes have included courses on psychosocial skills. This may, in the future, promote the development and refinement of leadership skills, in line with the expectations of most employers. Due to the fact that the presented research is of a pilot nature, it will be continued in the following years in order to assess the impact of changes in the curricula on the improvement of students' leadership skills.

Objectives:  This study aimed to explore the influence of the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics on physical activity motivation and behaviour among spectators. Methods: The sample comprised 1851 spectators (mean age 36.6±12.7 years). Participants were asked via intercept surveys whether the Olympics changed or will change their desire to engage in regular physical activity, and whether they had increased their physical activity. Findings: 60.2% reported changes in their desire to engage in regular physical activity and 51.6% increased their physical activity. Those under 55 years of age were significantly more likely to change their desire to engage in regular physical activity (OR 1.54, 95% CI 1.14 to 2.08). Non-Brazilians (versus Brazilians) were significantly more likely to report a change in their desire to engage in regular physical activity, and to have increased their physical activity (OR 1.28, 95% CI 1.05 to 1.57; OR 1.40, 1.15 to 1.71, respectively). Conclusions: While previous studies have found no relationship between Olympics and population physical activity, our findings suggest that the Olympics may provide a unique opportunity to improve levels of physical activity.

Opis:
The aim of the study reported in this paper was to examine life satisfaction among physical education teachers, as well as to look for relationships of its level within selected parameters related to the occupation of teaching and socio-cultural factors. The research applied to a group of 99 physical education teachers from the Opolskie Voivodeship. The Polish adaptation of the SWLS life satisfaction scale was employed for this purpose [10]. An original survey questionnaire developed by this author was also used, as it enabled the determination of the ways in which free time is spent and the duration of time per day when the interviewed subjects sit for excessively long periods. The study did not demonstrate statistically significant dependences between the gender of the subjects as well as their level of education and the investigated parameters. Most teachers reported a high (55.6%) level of life satisfaction, whereas average satisfaction was reported by 41.4 % of the subjects, and by a few as low as 3%. The study did not reveal any statistically significant correlations between life satisfaction and age, work experience nor the time spent in a sitting position. Only 46.5% of the teachers stated that if they had more free time for themselves, they would embark on some form of physical activity among other tasks. The subjects who declared working longer hours more often stated that they are willing to take various forms of rest excluding physical activity. For the reasons outlined above, it seems necessary to encourage physical activity among physical education teachers as a manner of expending free time. Further research should strive to determine the factors responsible for life satisfaction among a variety of factors, not just socio-cultural, professional, or economic ones, with a note that such a study should involve a larger population.

Opis:
The topic of informal patient payments is rather new in policy discussions although the phenomenon has existed for decades. These payments are a threat to public health since they jeopardise efficiency, equity and quality of health care provision. Most importantly, those who  cannot afford to pay might not seek or delay seeking treatment. Before attempting to deal with informal patient payments, it is necessary to understand the reasons for their existence and their role in health care provision. This could indicate the mechanisms through which these payments can be influenced by policy, as well as relevant strategies for dealing with these payments. This paper outlines a mixture of strategies as a plausible solution to informal patient payments. The successful implementation of these strategies depends on the particular setting and the overall conditions in the country (e.g. prevalence of corruption, and attitudes of health system stakeholders towards informal payments).

Desirable sound of music has a wide range of psychological and physiological beneficial health effect among diverse population in different conditions. Research for example showed when music is selected according to its motivational qualities, the positive impact on performance (e.g., increased endurance) and psychological states (e.g., enhanced affect) are even greater, which has important implications for exercise adherence in male and female participants. On the other hand, healing sounds have always been considered in the past an important aid in medical practice, and nowadays, medicine has confirmed the efficacy of music therapy in clinical setting and in aging population. It seems healing harmony as a source of inspiration in science is an effective approach to improve quality of life in different individuals. Hence, music intervention as an easily, inexpensive, noninvasive approach to improve public health is notably recommended

Introduction. Parents as day-to-day caregivers looking after their children’s health and upbringing are crucial in the process of hearing loss prevention among the young. The aim of the study was to assess the parents’ knowledge and awareness of hazards bringing about hearing loss, possibilities to prevent this, as well as their reaction in the case of problems of their children with hearing. Material and methods. The research group comprised respondents (402 persons), medical or paramedical professionals. None of the surveyed was a doctor. 56% of the surveyed were inhabitants of large cities, 24% of small towns, and 20% of village, mostly located in the area of Greater Poland (Wielkopolska) (97%). To perform the research a survey was devised. GSES scale was applied as an accessory tool. Results. The subjects surveyed posses a great deal of knowledge concerning basic conditions that could adversely affect the hearing of children. Village inhabitants are half as afraid of hearing loss hazards as the inhabitants of large cities. More than 40% of the respondents claimed they do nothing to counteract their children’s overexposure to noise. In 48.5% of cases, GPs had not drawn parents’ attention to possible complications resulting from upper respiratory tract infections in children. Parents know where they should go to in case their children develop hearing problems or sudden hearing loss. Conclusions. Knowledge and awareness of factors that may trigger hearing loss is not synonymous with avoidance of the problem. Main components of hearing loss prevention among children and youths should be administrative actions, extensive education, and proper childcare at home.

The bill to amend the statute provides for a prohibition of the sale of the listed drinks to persons under 18 years of age on the premises of schools and other units of the educational system and in vending machines. The implementation of the proposed bans requires an analysis and a substantive decision, in particular regarding the harmfulness of drinks containing caffeine or taurine when consumed by minors. The possibility of achieving the required objective with the use of other measures should be considered. The proposed regulations determining criminal liability for noncompliance with the prohibitions on the advertising and sale of such drinks may be considered disproportionately harsh, as both their advertising and sale will be punished more severely than the advertising or sale of alcohol.

Opis:
Regardless of the reasons for making begging a vocation, the beggars were noted as constituting a significant population in most cities of Nigeria. They are consistently becoming an interesting phenomenon in every academic discourse. This study, as a modest complement to existing academic efforts, examined the development and public health implications of street begging. It is qualitative in nature, hence the adoption of in-depth and key informant interviews as well as non-participant observation data collection approach. It covered six purposively selected areas with appreciable numbers of beggars in Abuja Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The investigated population from these settlements comprised 30 beggars, 16 staff of Ministries of Women Affairs and Social Development, Ministry of Health, 2 journalists, and 7 residents of the areas where beggars’ joints were located. The data collected was treated with content analysis. The results showed that some of the beggars have been in the act for more than 3 decades. They viewed begging as a legitimate occupation rather than a nuisance to the society. Relative deprivation led some people to adopt street begging as a means of making a livelihood. Recurring business failure influenced the incursion into begging as a means of survival. The development and public health implications of street begging come in the form of environmental nuisance and health hazards, poor image of human development index in the country to the outsiders. With incessant increase in their population, consistent reduction of the percentage of productive forces becomes the order of the day. This consequently implies a breakdown in social welfare system and vulnerable socio-environmental system where unsustainability thrives.

Introduction and objective. Ensuring the adequate intake of micronutrients by populations is an important aspect of public health. This study aims to elucidate the process of setting nutrition recommendations and the development of subsequent policies associated with micronutrients in Poland by using the case study of folate. Materials and method. The study was based on 13 interviews conducted between October 2010 – February 2011, and desk research comprising a review of the associated scientific literature and relevant documents, such as scientific opinions and reports of the meetings of scientific committees. The interviews were conducted within the EURRECA (EURopean micronutrient RECommendations Aligned) Network of Excellence in the frame of the European Union’s 6th Framework Programme. Results. Since 1997, the Experts Group of the Ministry of Health recommended that all women of childbearing age should consume folic acid as a supplement to prevent neural tube defects in their offspring. The fortification of foodstuffs with folic acid is not obligatory. This study describes the revision of the folate nutrient recommendation and the process by which strategies to increase the intake of this vitamin by the Polish population were identified. The institution responsible for the choice and implementation of folate policy is the Ministry of Health and the National Food and Nutrition Institute is responsible for setting/updating the nutrient recommendations. Conclusions. The current Polish nutrition recommendations for folate are consistent with the levels set by most other countries. The constant improvement of nutritional knowledge on folate among consumers, especially young women, is necessary.

With increasing population and human activities, dumpsites experience diverse sources of waste with potential radiation hazards. Ionizing radiations have often been overlooked amongst researchers in third world countries, hence, information in this regard is lacking. In this study, nine dumpsites within Imo State University (IMSU) grounds were assessed for radiation levels using Geiger Muller counter Tube Mullard type ZP 1481 with assisted scalar and stopwatch. After calibration, the instrument was placed one meter above ground level and count rates recorded at 10 minutes interval for each location once in the morning, the afternoon and the evening for seven days. Results reveal higher dose equivalents in some morning periods than in the afternoon and evening. Site ETF2 had highest value of 0.69±0.08 mSv·yr-1, while Extension gate had lowest value of 0.56±0.01 mSv·yr-1. Compared to National Council for Radiation Protection maximum permissible level, these values are quite low. In conclusion, ionizing radiations levels at the studied dumpsites in Imo State University grounds are low and may not pose a threat to persons within the university.

Policy-makers assign various objectives to the implementation of patient charges for public health care services. These charges impose prices on health care consumption and as such, they are expected to affect the quantities of health care service demanded, and to generate revenues. The actual ability of patient charges to achieve these objectives depends to a great extent on the patient payment mechanism implemented in a country, as well as on the health care system and context-specific factors. This paper reviews and discusses the theoretical and empirical evidence on the effectiveness of patient payment policies. The paper suggests that patient charges can be a successful policy tool for controlling the pattern of health care utilisation and improving the quality of health care provision. However, an additional condition for success is the appropriateness of the design of patient charges with respect to efficiency and equity in the public health care sector

The article looks at the issue of public health understood as an important factor of production. The author also analyzes the impact of the population’s health on economic growth. Korporowicz discusses a variety of approaches to public health, with a particular emphasis on a socioeconomic approach. She highlights the economic aspect of health as a component of human capital that creates the basis for examining living conditions and socioeconomic development. Health also needs to be evaluated for the purposes of economic calculations in the area of health protection policies, the author says. Such evaluations are used to determine the costs of health insurance, for example in the case of car accidents. The author counters a popular belief that the level of human capital is exclusively associated with education and public spending on education. According to Korporowicz, the health status of the population influences the level of human capital, while healthcare needs to be treated as a major socioeconomic category. Health is a resource that is subject to wear and can be enhanced and partly replenished by adequate investment. It plays an increasingly important role in the structure of production. Without it, uninhibited economic growth is impossible, the author argues. Korporowicz sets out to prove that health and healthcare can be analyzed in terms of the theory of public goods. Health is an asset that can be used in a specific way, the author says, but its benefits cannot be directly accessed through the market; nor is health subject to competition because the more health there is among individuals, the more society benefits as a whole. This is what sets public goods apart from private goods, which means that the idea of analyzing health on the basis of the public goods theory is justified, the author argues. It needs to be assumed that economic growth is impossible without a healthy and efficiently functioning innovative and creative society, Korporowicz adds. In modern economies, economic efficiency strongly depends on the intellectual potential and health of the population, the author concludes.

Research on the intersection of adult learning, transitions and identity has largely focused on unidirectional changes such as moving from higher education to the workplace. Recently there has been a call to move beyond such linear conceptions and to acknowledge that learning transitions are more complex requiring nuanced studies of their multidirectional and multilevel characteristics as individuals in late modernity engage in transformations nested within broader social changes and flux. This paper outlines a current qualitative longitudinal study focusing on the learning transitions of a group of practitioners from clinical backgrounds as they undertake a professional doctorate in population health. The study draws on the concepts of vertical and horizontal transitions to trace shifting understandings of the practitioners as they seek to negotiate their professional identities and practices through time and space into becoming senior public health professionals. Their subjective responses are explored as positioned within individual life histories and larger narratives of transformation in the field of public health and higher education.

The authors of this report deals with the role of Public Health in Children and Youth HealthStrategic directives to improve the health and development of children and adolescents based on the implementation of the European Strategy, which underline the seven main priorities: maternal and newborn health, nutrition and physical activity, infectious diseases, injuries and violence, environment, adult age and psychosocial development and mental health. The most important preventive measures for children and adolescents include: preventive examinations, vaccination, screening tests, nutrition – prevention of eating disorders and injury prevention safety. Considering on the mostly close relationship with children in the community where doctors and nurses are working, the doctor becomes the figure who through lectures, for example, in primary schools, personal meetings affects the health awareness of children, their trend towards healthy eating, healthy lifestyle and prevention of lifestyle diseases. No need not forget especially the role of nurses in ordination – nurse – educator. Her most important task is to „educate“ and „learn“ the correct habits that encourage the protection of their health by the client himself. Opis:
Unhealthy lifestyle choices and passive behaviour are a significant problem for many developed countries. They lead to a decrease in public health in the form of diseases related to contemporary civilization, such as: cardiovascular diseases, type II diabetes and obesity. This increases the costs generated in the healthcare system. The share of costs resulting from combating these diseases increases every year. The choice of a transport mode used when commuting is often perceived as one of the factors leading to more proactive behaviour and thus decreasing the externalities not only connected directly with transport such as pollution, noise, congestion and accidents, but also those connected with public health. The paper shows the results of a study performed in Poland, which was meant to identify and measure the relations between the transport choices and other proactive choices of commuters. A logistic regression model was estimated to identify the occurrence and intensity of these relations. The goal of the article is, therefore, to assess whether the choice of a transport mode used when commuting is connected with other types of proactive behaviour of citizens. In particular, the author wishes to determine if people choosing a car as their mode of transport tend to be generally less active than people choosing public transport or those who commute actively.

Therefore, this study aimed to determine who and how uses the facilities and how their users perceive them. The sample comprised 1,036 exercisers aged 44.1±16.1 years. For over 85% of users, OGs are the facilities where they follow their planned exercise programme, with 56.2% declaring exercising solely there. The main perceived advantages of OGs are free-to-access (42.6%) and outdoor location (40.4%), while disadvantages are dependence on the season (57.2%) and the technical condition of devices (24.9%). The predominant motive for using OGs is to maintain and improve their health (38.6%) and stay fit (27.9%). OGs are an essential alternative to indoor gyms in situations of limited availability under pandemic conditions. For many people, they are even the only place to exercise.

Analizy oparto na danych pochodzących z baz Eurostat (on-line) i INSEE (on-line). Dane przedstawione w tabelach i na rysunkach prezentują dynamikę zmiennych. W wyniku przedstawionych analiz można wnioskować, że we wszystkich rozpatrywanych obszarach zdrowia publicznego istnieje znaczne zróżnicowanie pomiędzy krajami UE. Niemalże we wszystkich wymiarach poprawiają się wskaźniki zdrowia publicznego mieszkańców Unii: zmniejsza się dystans między oczekiwaną długością zdrowego życia mężczyzn i kobiet; maleje przeciętna śmiertelność z powodu chorób przewlekłych i samobójstw; nie wzrasta wskaźnik narażenia ludności miejskiej na zanieczyszczenia powietrza; mniejsza część ludności deklaruje uciążliwość z powodu hałasu.

Analyses are based on data derived from databases of the INSEE and the Eurostat. The data shown in tables and figures present the dynamics of variables. It could be concluded that in all are as of public health, there is considerable variation between countries in the EU. Almost in all dimensions of public health of the EU population improves: the gap between the healthy life expectancy of men and women is reducing, the average mortality from chronic diseases and suicide is decreasing , the urban population exposure to air pollution does not increase, a nuisance because of the noise is declared by smaller part of the population.

Opis:
Public health thinking requires an overhaul, a return to and modernization around ecological principles. Ecological Public Health thinking, outlined by Tim Lang and Geof Rayner, fits the twenty-first century’s challenges. It integrates what the authors call the four dimensions of existence: the material, biological, social and cultural aspects of life. Public health becomes the task of transforming the relationship between people, their circumstances and the biological world of nature and bodies. These transitions are Demographic, Epidemiological, Urban, Energy, Economic, Nutrition, Biological, Cultural and Democracy itself. By analyzing the theory and practice of public health last two or three centuries, the authors showed an evolution in thinking about public health. The term ‘ecological public health’ characterizes times in which everything is important, when it comes to health and well-being. The challenge for policy makers is one of navigating this complexity to deliver better health and greater equality in health.

Background. Monitoring public health workforce is one of the essential functions of the public health system. Objective. The aim of the study was to identify the specialities for physicians and dentists related to public health in the years 1951-2013, and analyse of available data on physicians and dentists certified as public health specialists (PHS) in 2003-2015. Material and Methods. The historical analysis covers a relevant regulations of a minister in charge of health. The data on PHS were obtained from the Centre of Medical Exams and included: the number of specialists and their demographic characteristics, professional background, spatial distribution. Density was also calculated. Results. The public health specialty was introduced in 1999. Before there were specialties in disciplines related to public health. In the years of 2003-2015, 360 physicians and dentists were certified as PHS. The majority of them had former background in another discipline, mostly related to clinical medicine. The average age of specialists was 47.2. Currently, the average age of specialists is ca. 57.6 years, with a prevalence of people aged 61-70 years (36.9%). PHS tend to be older than specialists in other disciplines. Over three fourths of PHS were certified in 2004. With the exception of that year, the public health specialist title was annually obtained by an average of 9 persons. The density of PHS in Poland was 0.94 per 100 thousand inhabitants, ranging between 0.16 and 3.12 in a given voivodeship. Conclusions. The analysis has revealed numerous obstacles in estimation of the number of PHS and indicated a lack of relevant mechanisms aimed at workforce development. A relevant policy for developing public health workforce is urgently needed.
Wprowadzenie. Monitorowanie zasobów kadrowych zdrowia publicznego (ZP) stanowi jedną z podstawowych funkcji systemu ZP. Cel. Materiał i metody. W okresie 2003-2015 tytuł specjalisty ZP uzyskało 360 lekarzy i lekarzy dentystów. Większość lekarzy i lekarzy dentystów specjalistów ZP posiadała wcześniejsze doświadczenie zawodowe i inne specjalizacje, głównie kliniczne. Średni wiek, w którym lekarze uzyskali tytuł specjalisty w tej dziedzinie wyniósł 47,2 lat. Obecnie średni wiek lekarza specjalisty ZP wynosi 57,6 lat, dominują osoby w grupie wieku 61-70 lat (36,9%). Wnioski. Uzyskane wyniki dowodzą licznych trudności w oszacowaniu liczby lekarzy zajmujących się szeroko rozumianym zdrowiem publicznym i wskazują na brak mechanizmów rozwoju kadry. Niezbędne jest pilne opracowanie polityki rozwoju zasobów kadrowych ZP.

BackgroundThe COVID-19 pandemic re-raised the subject of vaccines and their importance for public health. Given the number of employees, one of the key environments in which vaccination should be promoted is the workplace.Material and MethodsAn original, anonymous and voluntary questionnaire with 13 questions regarding health behaviors of employees in Poland was distributed through HR departments of the companies invited to the research (Computer-Assisted Web Interview – CAWI technique) This publication presents the results of answers to the 3 chosen questions concerning: health issues related to work, interest in health promoting initiatives and following recommendations for physical activity.ResultsAccording to the research presented in this article, 39% of employees in Poland were interested in vaccination against COVID-19. The most popular preventive initiatives are still healthy eating and sport activities. The government allowed organizing vaccinations at the workplace, which gives new opportunities but also obligations and risks. Overall, the potential of a workplace in fighting the coronavirus seems to be used to a very small extent. This carries the need to consult systemic solutions with representatives of employers and occupational medicine practitioners as well as the government.ConclusionsThe workplace should be one of the key habitats for health promoting activities, including vaccinations. The above-mentioned issue should still be the subject of research for solutions tailored to the needs and capabilities of each group (employers, occupational medicine professionals and government). One of the circumstances of promoting the health of employees should be preventive examinations of employees – a doctor’s visit and contact with an occupational medicine nurse. The potential of preventive employee examinations in this area seems to be unused and limited. The level of immunization of employees has an obvious impact on the state of the economy. In view of the voluntary vaccination against COVID-19, this requires educational campaigns aimed at both employees and employers.

Obesity is a significant social and health problem of societies world wide. Nowadays, the percentage of children suffering from overweight is increasing. This is the result of nutrition mistakes done during the first years of a young person’s life, and the lack of parental knowledge about the rules of proper nutrition. School-aged children suffering from overweight are clearly exposed to obesity in adulthood. The authors undertook to assess the nutritional habits of children attending primary schools located in the province of Lublin. The survey was conducted among a group of 150 students from three primary schools in the Lublin province. As a research method, the authors set up a survey in the printed version. The data obtained were compiled and analyzed in the Statistica 13™ (DellSoftware, USA). Over one-third (36.7%) of the children taking part in the study eat the recommended daily number of meals. Eating in the intervals between the main meals is often observed among the respondents (77.3%). Daily consumption of dairy products was declared by 20.8% of girls and 35.6% of boys. In questions about the promotion of healthy eating programs carried out at schools, the “Fruit and Vegetables at School” program was the most popular. The children who took part in the study showed mostly incorrect eating habits. The current situation requires further research and taking decisive steps by healthcare professionals, educators and parents. Consistent steps in existing programs promoting a healthy eating style will improve the epidemiological situation of abnormal nutrition among early-childhood children in the near future.

Brak dostępu do nowych technologii medycznych powoduje nierówności w zdrowiu. W Stanach Zjednoczonych, gdzie panuje system opieki zdrowotnej oparty na prywatnych ubezpieczeniach zdrowotnych roboty stanowią o prestiżu i wysokim poziomie świadczonych usług. Każdy zakupiony robot przyciąga nowych pacjentów-klientów za którymi idą dodatkowe fundusze. Pomimo ogólnej tendencji spadkowej w kwestii finansowania nowych urządzeń i wyrobów medycznych w państwach Europy Zachodniej liczba robotów chirurgicznych rośnie.
The new challenges of public health are medical robots. In the article, the existing financing systems and expenditures on health care were analyzed in several European countries, with particular emphasis on expenditure on medical devices. The number of medical robots was analyzed. In Europe, the social health system is largely dominant. In countries where the most money is spent on healthcare, such as Great Britain, France or Germany, the chances of implementing medical robots are greater than in Poland. In the United States, where there is a health care system based on private health insurance, robots determine the prestige and high level of services provided. Each purchased robot attracts new clients-clients for which additional funds go. Despite the general downward trend in the financing of new devices and medical devices in Western European countries, the number of surgical robots is growing. The situation of Poland on the background of the analyzed data would seem to be promising due to the increasing amounts spent on new devices. However, the absolute amounts, amounting to EUR 12-13 million per year, seem too small for the dynamic development of the robotics market. However, in general, the forecasts for the medical robot market are optimistic and predict a dynamic growth in sales.

Introduction. Bovine tuberculosis (bTB) is an infectious disease that occurs in many species of both domestic and freeranging animals, as well as animals kept in zoos. According to the Polish regulations, cattle tuberculosis are slaughtered and microbiological examinations are performed, the rest of animal species can be treated and laboratory diagnostics are not obligatory. Case report. The presented case concerns two male giraffes which were purchased by the zoo and united with a third male. After a year, the oldest male died. Post mortem examinations confirmed generalized tuberculosis. After a further six months, the second male was euthanized after suffering great pain. The material for the study of drug resistance was a swab from the nose, obtained ante mortem from the third male. Attempted treatments did not produce the expected results. Genotyping allowed the exclusion of a common source of transmission. Conclusions. The final effect of the anti-tuberculosis therapy in the male giraffe raises the question whether the research team should have undertaken the treatment of the animal with active tuberculosis.

Opis:
Introduction and objectives. Chlamydia (C.) felis can cause infection which may be associated with conjunctivitis and/or respiratory tract disease, particularly in kittens, but could also be the cause of the disease in adult cats. Infection is more common in multi-cat environments. The zoonotic potential of C. felis appears low, but exposure to this microorganism is possible by handling the affected cats, by contact with their aerosol, and also via fomites. Materials and method. In the study, 140 cats of various breeds from Košice region in Slovakia were studied. Conjunctival samples were obtained from 71 clinically healthy cats (50.7%) and 69 cats with clinical signs of conjunctivitis and upper respiratory tract impairment (49.3%). Cats were divided into 4 groups according to breed and type of environment in which they lived. In the 1st group were cats kept inside only (n=33), in the 2nd group, free-roaming cats (n=50), the 3rd group comprised stray cats, taken from the streets (n=28), and the 4th group included cats kept in shelters or deposit devices (n=29). Molecular method PCR and DNA sequencing was used as the diagnostic method. Results. Overall positivity was 17.1%. Of the 24 positive cats, the highest positivity was detected in the population of stray cats (35.7%) and shelter cats (31%). In the group of free-roaming cats, 10% had positivity. No positive animals were detected in the group of cats kept inside only. It was also found that the risk of C. felis in cats with clinical signs of disease was more than 7-fold higher than in cats without clinical signs of conjunctivitis and respiratory tract. Conclusion. The obtained results show that cats, especially stray and shelter cats, can be important sources of feline chlamydiosis, and due to their close contact with people they can present a risk for transmission.

Introduction and objective. Occupational asbestos exposure is one of the major public health issues. Although asbestos use in Poland has decreased, asbestosis continues to remain an important health concern in the area of occupational medicine. The aim of the study is to perform a descriptive analysis of hospitalization cases in patients suffering from asbestosis in Poland. Materials and method. The authors used hospital discharge records to conduct a retrospective, population-based study. To estimate the asbestosis hospitalization rate, data from the Nationwide General Hospital Morbidity Study conducted by the National Institute of Public Health were used. Events were defined as in-patient hospital discharges during 2006–2016. 1,101 hospitalization records of 764 patients were included in the study. Results. In the study group of first-time hospitalized patients, the mean and median ages were 68.1 and 69 years, respectively; CI: 67.3–68.9; SD: 11.1, min-max:16–99 years. In this group, significant gender differences were observed (560 males vs. 204 female; P<0.001). No statistical differences were observed regarding the place of residence. During the observation period, 61 in-hospital deaths were reported (8% of all patients), 40 of whom (5.2 % of all patients) took place during the first-time hospitalizations. Asbestosis hospitalizations were mainly clustered in the south-western region, whereas the highest hospitalization rates were clustered in several areas of Poland. Conclusions. The authors believe this study to be the first evaluation of asbestosis in Poland made on the basis of the hospital morbidity database. The data presented may be helpful in comparative studies on the epidemiology of asbestosis across European countries.

Cannabis is the most popular illicit drug on the European market. Over 16 million young Europeans have used it at least once in the last few years. The recent trends in the consumption of marihuana differ between countries. Some countries face an increase in the prevalence of cannabis use, including Poland, where the level cannabis use has been systematically increasing since the 1990’s. According to a recent ESPAD study, 19% of Polish adolescents aged 15–16 have used cannabis in the last year. Marihuana is also a leading substance when analyzing the data of seizures and crimes. The recent EMCDDA Annual report on the drug situation in Europe notes the increasing potency in cannabis available on the market. Some countries face an increasing number of emergencies caused by marihuana, which was unlikely to have happened previously. In almost all European countries there is an ongoing discussion about loosening marijuana laws or its complete legalization. There is also ongoing discussion on the use of marihuana in therapy as a medicine. Many scientific studies are being conducted in this field. Some of the results are promising; however, there is no well-designed human trial which would unequivocally confirm that medical cannabis is effective as a medicine, or more effective than other medicines on the market. The problem is that the debate on the medical use of marihuana becomes more ideological and less professional. The medical use of marihuana is strongly supported by organizations lobbying for the legalization of cannabis use. Research on the medical use of cannabis should be continued, as there are some promising results supporting therapy in different medical conditions. However, the use of cannabis as a medicine should be discussed only among professionals. If marihuana is to be used for medical purposes, the fact that it is the most popular illicit drug in Europe is irrelevant.

Introduction: The first organ transplant was carried out by the team of Dr. Joseph Murray. In Poland, the team led by Zbigniew Religa carried out the first heart transplantation on November 5,1982. Materials and methods: The study was conducted among students of Public Health Faculty of Health Sciences at the Medical University of Warsaw (MUW) and the Faculty of Health Science at the Medical University of Bialystok (MUB) among students of three years of bachelor’s degree and two years of master’s degree. Test method was a diagnostic survey. We used a questionnaire compiled by the authors of the publication, containing 21 questions, and in five of them the 5- degree Likert’s scale was used. Results: When asked about promoting the procurement and transplantation of organs from the deceased 74.3% of students from both universities answered definitely yes, 22.2% - rather yes. When asked if in the event of death they would agree to be a donor 64.2% said definitely yes, 26.3% - rather yes, 8.7% - hard to say. 48.5% of respondents from MUW and 42.4% from MUB spoke to their relatives about their decision whether or not to remove organs after death. Conclusions: The analysis of the study shows high acceptability of transplantation medicine in terms of saving lives, however, the desire to donate one’s own organs after death or acceptance of organ donation after death of loved ones is far from the overall acceptability

Parasitic zoonoses represent significant problems in public health, animal agriculture and conservation, and the meat industry. There is an urgent need for integration of medical and veterinary services, continuous disease surveillance in both humans and animals, the teaching of zoonoses to medical doctors, and intensified research on zoonotic agents and diseases. The relationship between the public health status and income inequality has been taken into consideration in the last two decades. One of the important questions in this regard is that whether the changes in income inequality will lead to changes in health indicators or not. To answer this question, life expectancy is used as a health indicator and the Gini coefficient is used as an income inequality indicator. In this study, the relationship between income inequality and the public health has been investigated by panel data in Eviews software during 2000–2011 in 65 low-and middle-income countries. By using panel data and considering fixed effects and heterogeneity of sections, the relationship between income inequality and public health status is a significant negative relationship.

Introduction. According to epidemiologic research, the number of obese and overweight children is increasing. A common way of dealing with this problem is enacting legislation regarding food served in educational institutions. In Poland, the regulations regarding the assortment of school shops are contained in the Ordinance of the Minister of Health of 26th June 2015 (and its subsequent amendments). Aim. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the product range of school shops and vending machines in Rzeszów. Methods and materials. The study covered 52 primary and secondary schools in Rzeszów. The schools included in the study had 15568 students altogether. Products bought by students in school shops and vending machines were recorded over the period of 3 days. Results. The study has shown a statistically significant relationship (p <0.001) between the amount and types of products bought in primary and secondary schools. Healthy snacks only made up a small percentage of products sold. Secondary schools sold 20% more snacks with high sugar content compared to primary schools. A majority of products sold were compliant with regulations (p=0.12). Conclusions. The assortment of school shops has changed after the implementation of the Ordinance of the Minister of Health of 26 June 2015 (and its subsequent amendments). The newly introduced restrictions significantly narrowed down the range of products offered in schools, reducing the number of products containing more than 15g of sugar (13.5g per 100g/ml in case of dairy products) or 10g of fat per portion.

Viral gastroenteritis and other water-borne diseases are the most neglected areas of research in Pakistan. To determine the quality of water, 4 enteric viruses were studied from different localities of Peshawar, Pakistan. The study validates the viral detection method for Rotavirus (RV), Human adenovirus (HAdV), Enterovirus (EV) and Hepatitis A virus (HAV), directly from water sources of rural areas of Peshawar, KPK, Pakistan. Overall, 95 five water samples were tested; among them, 9.47% were positive for RV, 38.94% for HAdV, 48.42% for EV and 12.63% for HAV. The presence of these viruses in water was directly correlated with meteorological data. High prevalence of EV and HAdV was detected frequently in the wet season from May – September, which can be the potential cause of spreading of gastroenteritis in the population. Environmental surveillance is an additional tool to evaluate the epidemiology of enteric viruses circulating in a given community.

Regarding the prevalence of illicit psychoactive drugs about one third of the adults in Germany are experienced with such kind of drugs. Consumption of classical illegal drugs like heroin and cocaine seems to be unchanged. This article focuses essentially on ‘natural and synthetic drugs’ with respect to (i) injecting drug users (IDU) with the potential of spreading blood borne infections such as, e.g., HBV, HCV and HIV and (ii) people actively participating in sexual exposure settings where psychotropic drugs are concomitantly used. Entactogenic [1,2] drugs are also in demand in these settings especially for sexual stimulation. The addressed issues are to highlight the complexity of the misuse of illicit psychotropic drugs in Germany, and then both targeting directly the individual, temporally limited as well as permanently following hazards of health; furthermore, the indirect consequences are the increasing spread of STIs (sexually transmitted infections) that poses the next relevant issues for public health and social importance. The drugs discussed here are no longer restricted to the most-atrisk populations [3] but have been expanded to include the general population

Background The aim of this study has been to examine the association between climate conditions (CC) and hospital admissions for the subcategories of cardiovascular diseases (CVD), according to patients’ age. Material and Methods From January 2010 through December 2011, the daily number of hospital admissions for angina pectoris (AP), essential hypertension (EH), acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and ischemic heart diseases (IHD) for adults (19–64 years old) and the elderly (≥ 65 years old), as well as for the CC (N = 728 days) was collected for multivariate Poisson regression analysis, confounding with season and weekends. The results were expressed by using the relative risk with the corresponding 95% confidence interval. Results The risk for the AMI among the adults and the elderly is significantly higher for 41.8% and 38.9%, respectively on the days with lower ambient temperature and lesser for 32.7% and 29.8%, respectively on the days with lower air pressure values. The risk for the IHD among the elderly is significantly higher on the days with lower ambient temperature and lower relative humidity for 50.6% and 37.4%, respectively. Conclusions Our findings explain how the CC and subcategories of CVD are associated, which could be used for adequate public awareness of the risk for hospitalization due to climate conditions. As part of the European Public Health project IMCA II validity and practicability of “air pollution” as a respiratory health indicator were analyzed. The definitions of air quality as an indicator proposed by the WHO project ECOEHIS and by IMCA I were compared. The public availability of the necessary data was checked through access to web-based data-bases. Practicability and interpretation of the indicator were discussed with project partners and external experts. Air quality serves as a kind of benchmark for the good health-related environmental policy. In this sense, it is a relevant health indicator. Although air quality is not directly in the responsibility of health policy, its vital importance for the population’s health should not be neglected. In principle, data is available to calculate this IMCA indicator for any chosen area in Europe. The indicator is relevant and informative, but calculation and interpretation need input from local expert knowledge. The European health policy is well advised to take air quality into account. To that end, an interdisciplinary approach is warranted. The proposed definition of air quality as a (respiratory) health indicator is workable, but correct interpretation depends on expert and local knowledge.

Since the start of the Russian Invasion of Ukraine on 24.02.2022, millions of people (mostly women and children) have fled Ukraine. Majority of them fled to Poland and providing adequate medical care for the massive influx of refugees is a considerable challenge for the Polish healthcare system, already burdened by the COVID-19 pandemic and staf shortages. The purpose of this study was to identify: the potential health problems of the incoming population, the legal and ethical aspects of the refugee crisis and its implications on public health. Combining the current data with previous research on refugee crises reveals a set of issues that need to be addressed. Ensuring continuity of chronic disease treatment, mental health, the risk of spreading vaccinable preventable diseases, high rates of tuberculosis, HIV and the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic are among the main concerns. In the near future, answers will have to be found to the emerging ethical questions of equal, safe access to care, implications of the language barrier, immunisation coverage, medical staf shortages, and existing legal and ethical regulations. As the emergency responses are addressed, the hosting countries need to prepare long-term resolutions. Kolińska K, Paprocka-Lipińska A, Koliński M. This paper presents the concept of health security along with its threats, with particular focus on the new phenomena related to globalisation which contribute to the occurrence of new health threats. The threats to Poland’s health security are divided into internal and external. Internal ones may occur when the authorities do not meet the health needs of society. However, policymakers from industrialized countries put emphasis on protecting the population from external health security threats, especially from those that may become cross-border threats.

taxonomic measure of development comparative analysis
Opis:
As an international organization the European Union pursues a range of purposes including improvement of public health, prevention of human illness and diseases as well as elimination of the sources of danger to physical and mental health. To enable effective health policies supporting actions of the member states, the data and materials which are fundamental to public health assessments are collected at the Community level. They underpin a variety of analyses necessary to evaluate changes in medical systems and determine the degree of similarity between the EU member states. This article analyses public health in Poland in relation to selected European countries. The study is based on the medical, economic and social indicators available from the EUROSTAT database. The taxonomic methods used in the study allowed ranking the sampled countries and identifying those with the highest level of public health. A more detailed assessment was based on the general presentation of health care systems in each country. In addition to Poland, the other post-socialist countries in the sample are Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Romania, Slovenia, Hungary and the Czech Republic. Importantly, the study covers the years 2004-2009, after most of the countries joined the European Union. The reason why other former Eastern bloc countries were omitted from the study was the unavailability of appropriate data in the EUROSTAT database. The paper discusses a group of developed European countries too. However, because the complicated historical past of the post-socialist countries and the socio-economic difficulties that result from it make their analysis more interesting from a comparative point of view, they are the primary group explored in this article. This article is divided into theoretical and empirical section. It begins with a short introduction. Part two presents the concept of health and public health. The third part describes key factors differentiating health systems. It briefly presents the main healthcare models, that is: the Bismarck’s, Beveridge’s, Siemaszko’s and the residual model. The fourth section refers to a grouping method based on Hellwig’s taxonomic measure of development. Part five with its scope includes a comparative analysis of public health status of selected European countries. The sixth part presents major determinants of cluster formation. The paper ends with a conclusion that summarizes the obtained results.

Our sample, which is from the Ibn Sina Hospital in Rabat, consists of 150 nurses, 80 doctors, and 40 administrators. A self-questionnaire was employed, the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) as well as a clinical interview. The results of this study show a high degree of burnout. Moreover, 56.66% of participants show a high level of emotional exhaustion, 45.18% suffer from a high level of depression. Meanwhile, the loss of a sense of personal accomplishment is high among 48.51% of those surveyed. The emotional exhaustion observed among people who have worked for a long time ago is associated with the means of transportation used and to the unsuitable hours of work. Depersonalization exists among elderly people and the oldest at work. This study confirms the existence of a high level of burnout among health professionals. Many socio-demographic and socio-professional factors contribute to the increase in the level that people are affected. These factors encourage the promotion of better working life conditions.
