Opis:
In order to avoid the negative effects of increasing the amount of RME in the fuel, the nitrON® package was used, containing 3 different additives: stabilizing, washing and increasing the cetane number of the fuel. The tests were carried out with the use of the Caterpillar C27 engine of the 6Dg locomotive connected to a water resistor. The hourly engine fuel consumption (FC), NOx concentration and exhaust opacity were measured for 3 points of the F test, in accordance with UIC 624. The concentration of the nitrON® additive in the test fuel was 1500 ppm (v/v). For idling, the reduction in FC value was only 1.5% (in relation to the base fuel), but for a very high engine load and nominal rotational speed, the percentage reduction in FC was as high as 5%. The reduction of NOx concentration for idling (as a result of using nitrON®) was approx. 10%, while for high engine load, the percentage reduction of NOx concentration in the exhaust gas exceeded 15%.

BackgroundExposure to fine and ultrafine particles from transport processes is a main consequence of emissions from engines, especially those with self-ignition. The particles released in these processes are a source of occupational and environmental particles exposure. The aim of this study was to assess the fine and nano-sized particles emission degree during work connected with transport and vehicle servicing.Material and MethodsThe tests were carried out at 3 workplaces of vehicles service and maintenance (a car repair workshop, a truck service hall, and a bus depot) during 1 work day in each of them. Measurements were performed using the following devices: DISCmini meters, GRIMM 1.109 optical counter and the DustTrak monitor. The number, surface area and mass concentration, and the number size distribution were analyzed.ResultsThe mean number concentration (DISCmini) increased during the analyzed processes, ranging from 4×104 p/cm3 to 8×104 p/cm3, and the highest concentration was found in the car repair workshop. The particles mean diameters during the processes ranged 31–47 nm, depending on the process. An increase in the surface area concentration value was observed in correlation with the particles number, and its highest concentration (198 m2/cm3) was found during work in the car repair workshop. The number size distribution analysis (GRIMM 1.109) showed the maximum value of the number concentration for particles sized 60 nm. The mean mass concentrations increased during the tested processes by approx. 40–70%, as compared to the background.ConclusionsAccording to the measurement results, all the workplaces under study constituted a source of an increase in all analyzed parameters characterizing emissions of nano-sized particles. Such working environment conditions can be harmful to the exposed workers; therefore, at such workplaces solutions for minimizing workers’ exposure, such as fume hoods or respiratory protection, should be used. Opis:
In this paper, an experimental method was utilized to investigate acoustic emission (AE) characteristics and to identify emission sources of the nonlinear AE signal on the cylinder body of a large low-speed two-stroke marine diesel engine in real-working conditions on the sea in misfiring and normal firing modes. Measurements focused on the AE signal acquired in a transverse direction in low-frequency (20-80 kHz), medium-frequency (100-400 kHz) and high-frequency (400-900 kHz) ranges. The collected signals were analyzed on the crank angle and crank angle-frequency domains. The results showed that all potential sources of the nonlinear AE signal could be mapped in the low-frequency range. However, only the AE signal caused by the combustion process at around the top dead center could be well-observed in the medium-to-high-frequency range. The findings also revealed that in normal firing conditions, the AE energy radiated by friction in the down-stroke period was smaller than in the up-stroke process due to gas-sealing forces. Moreover, the AE energy in the misfiring condition was higher than in the normal firing state. These outcomes considerably contributed understandings to characteristics of friction and wear around the mid-stroke area of the cylinder on a two-stroke marine diesel engine.

Today huge capacity sea-going vessels are propelled by mega high-powered marine diesel engines, referred to as Main Engine. Turbocharging system is an integral part of large marine diesel engine plant, contributing to their safety, reliability, and efficiency. Defects in the turbocharging system could result in higher fuel consumption, erratic running of the Main Engine, and in the worst scenario may result in the stoppage of the Main Engine at sea. An inefficient turbocharging system may also cause major damage to turbochargers, resulting in undesirable accidents out at sea. To avoid such undesirable accidents and ensure smooth operations of the Main Engine, it is required to address this concern. The aim of this research is to study the turbocharging system for a large Main Engine using a Kongsberg engine simulator. Various malfunction of the Turbocharging system is considered, relevant data is collected and analysed. Moreover, a Fault Tree Analysis, (FTA) is considered to identify the top undesirable event which is the failure of the Main Engine. Based on the results of this study, various steps are suggested to avoid failure of the Main Engine due to the defective turbocharging system.

The paper has been presented the methods of nitrogen oxides emission reduction to fulfill the Tier 2 and Tier 3 requirements of the Annex VI of MARPOL Convention. It has been shown the development of marine two-stroke diesel engines and the change of nitrogen oxides emission from 1960 to 2000 and later up to 2020 after the implementation of NOx emission reduction methods. Specific fuel consumption before 2000, and as a prediction and given data in the manufacturers manuals for Tier 3 engines up to 2020, and as only a prediction up to 2030 has been analyzed and elaborated. Impact of nitrogen oxides reduction methods on the specific fuel consumption of the marine diesel engine has been evaluated. Additional emission of some gases to the atmosphere due to the implementation of reduction methods has been determined. EGR and SCR systems have got a lot of imperfections: required to install additional reduction systems (investment cost, required volume in the engine room), need maintenance and operation costs, produced wastes during treatment process. The estimated additional cost is about 0.8 USD/MWh of produced energy, taking into account only the cost of excessive used fuel. The whole increased cost may reach the level two-three times more due to cleaning systems investment costs, their operational cost and waste disposal. It has been the one of the reasons of worsening the transport effectiveness and competitiveness.

Marine propulsion shafting systems are exposed to torsional vibrations originating from excitations in their prime movers and propellers. It is essential to analyse their steady state response in the earliest stage of ship design. The paper describes the implementation of SimulationX software based upon simulation modelling for these calculations. This software can be used either by the design office of the shipyard or by the classification society for verification within the plan approval phase. Some specifics of the input data preparation are briefly discussed. In addition, the simulation results depend on the modelling approach chosen. For these reasons, the real two-stroke Diesel engine ship propulsion system was chosen and several different models were implemented for system modelling. SimulationX calculation results are compared with those of two well-known and field-proven programs that use an analytical approach. Finally, the results are compared with the measurements performed on the actual newly built ship. Discussion reviews the selected SimulationX model, and its verification and validation in the case of engine cylinders with normal ignition.

Modernization of aged rolling stock is one of the possibilities to adapt it to the current requirements for better environmental friendliness and economy of railway transport. However, some vehicle upgrades lead to new failures that were not observed in the original vehicles. The cause is the so-called “hybrid design”, built on a combination of original and selected new components. The aim of the work was to improve the situation with frequent failures and unavailability that occur on the modernized locomotive where a new diesel engine and new electronic control system was installed. Within the work, a simplified methodology for evaluating the outputs of diagnostic equipment was developped based on and applied to specific locomotive type and its diesel engine. The methodology resulted in a significant reduction of the time for assessing the condition of the vehicle’s diesel engine and more effective maintenance. The paper also presents other possibilities in the analysis of big data in the maintenance of rolling stock e.g. using fuzzy logic.

The paper suggests an improved method of active power distribution among the gas-diesel generators operating in parallel; the method involves the control of torque and the angular positions of their rotors. The use of the suggested approach to the solution of the active power distribution task in the presence of instability of drive motor speed provides the increase of autonomous power system operation efficacy and rising the power unit’s performance. The authors analyzed the causes of generation of low-frequency fluctuations of generator drive engine speed; in autonomous electric power systems, gas diesel generators are increasingly used as such generator drive engines. It is suggested to use the developed method and structure of the optical device for control of rotation period and the measurement of the generator rotor angle position characterized with high accuracy, as the sensor. The authors developed a schematic diagram of active power distribution among the generators operating in parallel, which uses the cross feedback for gas-powered diesel engine shafts momentum and the generator rotor angle position. They obtained experimental results confirming the efficiency of the suggested active power distribution method and its practical implementation.

The removal of organic pollutants from ship emission was studied using two processes namely electron beam (EB) and hybrid EB with wet scrubbing process. A mobile accelerator unit was used to treat 4915 Nm3 /h of flue gas emitted from a tugboat in Riga Shipyard. A volume of 3 m3 seawater containing 36.8 mM of NaClO2 oxidant was used as a wet scrubber solution. Organic pollutants, mainly volatile organic pollutants (VOCs), were collected at three different sampling points, before and after irradiation vessels, and after wet-scrubber unit, respectively. They were collected with glass sampling bottles, tedlar bags, Coconut Shell Charcoal (CSC) sorbents and XAD-2 sorbents. CH3OH and CH3OH/CH2Cl2 (1:1) were used to extract VOCs from CSC and XAD-2 sorbents, respectively. Syringe filters were used to obtain the solid-free extraction solutions. They were concentrated using a micro-extractor under continuously blowing high-purity Ar. A gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was used for analysis. The identified organic compounds were: aliphatic hydrocarbons (dodecane C12H26 to eicosane C20H42), aromatic hydrocarbon (toluene), esters (C3H7COOCH3, (C4H9OCO)2C6H4), nitro compounds (C3H5NO3, C4H7NO2) and acid (C7H15COOH). After 4.2 kGy EB irradiation, around 50–100% aliphatic hydrocarbons, 83% toluene and 7.5% (C4H9OCO)2C6H4 were removed from the off-gases, and after EB hybrid wet-scrubber process, most organic compounds including nitro compounds were removed. Only trace amount of toluene, hexadecane, octadecane and dibutyl phthalate were found to be present in the gas phase.

Opis:
To analyse the behaviour of marine diesel engines in unsteady states for different purposes, for example to determine the fuel consumption or emissions level, to adjust the control strategy, to manage the maintenance, etc., a goal-based mathematical model that can be easily implemented for simulation is necessary. Such a model usually requires a wide range of operating data, measured on a test stand. This is a time-consuming process with high costs and the relevant data are not available publicly for a selected engine. The present paper delivers a rapid and relatively simple method for preparing a simulation model of a given marine diesel engine, based only on the widely available data in the project guides indicated for steady state conditions. After establishing the framework of the mathematical model, it describes how the parameters of the model can be adjusted for the simulation model and how the results can be verified as well. Conceptually, this is a trial and error method, but the presented case example makes clear how the parameters can be selected to reduce the number of trials and quickly determine the model parameters. The necessary descriptions are given through a case study, which is the MAN-B&W 8S65ME-C8 marine diesel engine. The engine is assumed to be connected to a constant pitch propeller. The presented mathematical model is a mean-value zero-dimensional type with seven state variables. The other variables of the engine are determined based on the state independent variables and the input value, which is the fuel rate. The paper can be used as a guideline to prepare a convenient mathematical model for simulation, with the minimum publicly available data.

Opis:
The phenomena accompanying the self-ignition period have been the subject of extensive research in this area. They are usually carried out in constant volume pressure chambers or in reactors with constant air flow. Such tests are considered to be basic. The conditions in these tests are definitely different from those in compression ignition engines. Therefore, the comparison of the auto-ignition delay periods from test setups to those obtained from real engines raises a number of doubts. Because the self-ignition delay period determines the combustion process, a theoretical analysis was conducted, pertaining to a number of factors that have an impact on this process which determines the operational aspects of the engine, and thus its economics and ecology. The research object was a single-cylinder engine from AVL LIST GmbH in Graz, Austria. The engine is equipped with a Common Rail injection system. The test setup meets the following standards: Directive 1999/96/EC of the European Parliament and the Council of 13th December 1999, Regulation (EC) No 715/2007 of the European Parliament and the Council of 20th June 2007, as well as Commission Regulation (EC) No 692 /2008 of 18th July 2008. The analysis of the operational aspects of the self-ignition delay period was based on the results of tests on the AVL 5402 engine fueled with hydrocarbon fuels: diesel and synthetic oil. The engine was also fed with vegetable fuel – rapeseed oil. The obtained material from the tests warns the user of CI engines against the effects of their failure if the engine control parameters and the quality of fuel for its supply are not maintained as recommended by the manufacturers. The material contained in the publication is used for scientific analysis, and, which is worth emphasizing, is of a utilitarian nature.

The article demonstrates a rational scheme of the supercharging system in a helicopter diesel engine with a power of 100 kW, regardless of the flight altitude, and proposes a method for assessing the power losses for a diesel engine depending on the flight altitude using a mathematical model. There are three variants of an engine supercharger scheme with a single-stage turbocharger, a two-stage one with parallel or sequential compressor drive and a turbo-blower. As a result of the computational analysis according to the original method, it was shown that from the point of view of the least energy consumption two-stage scheme with a compressor and a sequential drive is the most rational. To reduce energy losses in the drive with two-stage supercharging, a concept for controlling the pressure system was proposed, which includes changing the rotational speed of the compressor drive and adjusting the throttles. Simulation of the engines running during the climb/descent of the helicopter showed that the proposed pressure scheme and control concept is effective. In order to improve the quality of regulation, the possibility to use an electric drive with the first stage compressor is being considered.

The article presents results of investigation on the combustion of a mixture of pyrolysis oil from tires and regular fuel in the internal combustion reciprocating piston engine. The tested fuel consisted of: diesel fuel and pyrolysis oil at amount of 10% by volume. The tests were carried out on a single-cylinder naturally aspirated compression-ignition engine. The engine was equipped with a common rail fuel injection system and an electronic control unit that allowed changing injection timing. A comparative analysis of pressure-volume charts for the reference fuel, which was diese fuel, and for a mixture of diesel with 10% addition of pyrolysis oil was carried out. Injector characteristics for the reference fuel and the mixture were determined. Engine efficiency for both fuels was also determined. Unrepeatability of the engine work cycles for the diesel fuel and the tested mixture was calculated. Finally, exhaust toxic emission was analyzed. It was found that the pyrolysis oil can be used as valuable additive to regular diesel fuel at amount up to 10%, however, toxic exhaust gases emission was increased.
