Opis:
The objectives of the study was to investigate and compare the characteristics of oak advance−growth of various age present under Scots pine canopy and growing on the mesic mixed coniferous (BMśw) or mesic mixed deciduous (LMśw) forest site types. The study was conducted in Kolumna Forest District (central Poland) in 21 Scots pine stands ca. 90 years of age, and with a well−developed oak advance−growth. The study sites were divided into 4 groups depending on the age of oak: 15, 20, 25 or 30−years−old. The empirical data concerned trees frequency (per unit area), average breast height diameter, height and basal area. The dependence of these characteristics on type of the main stand and advance−growth was then determined by statistical analysis. Above all, an attempt was made to determine the impact of forest site type conditions on the characteristics of oaks advance−growth. Results show that oaks are present at the density that makes the possibility of the advance−growth development into the stand real. Trees in the upper storey are found to exert a great influence on the silvicultural value of advance−growth trees. In particular, the density of trees in the main stand is a feature found to affect greatly the layer of oak advance−growth.

Opis:
Forest gaps, openings in the canopy caused by death of one or more trees, are the dominant form of natural disturbance in the temperate forests. Gaps play a critical role in driving stand dynamics and influencing forest growth cycle. They increase habitat diversity, structural complexity, fauna and flora species diversity. The size of a gap may strongly influence tree species regeneration composition, vegetation growth, nutrient cycling, microclimate and may have considerable effect on a number of biological processes. The main aim of this study was to understand the effects of gap size diversity on species composition and number of natural regeneration. The study was carried out in near−natural mixed stands dominated by beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) and silver fir (Abies alba Mill.) representing different development stages and phases in the Świętokrzyski National Park, (central Poland). All gaps over than 20 m 2 intersected by a transects line were sampled. All saplings and seedlings were counted in circular plots (10 m²) evenly spaced along the long axis in the N−S and E−W gradients of each gap. Natural regeneration was analyzed for 62 canopy gaps of various sizes. The gaps were classified into three size classes: small ≤100 m², medium 101−250 m² and large >250 m². The gap size ranged from 21 to 397 m², with a median of 104 m². The dominant tree species regenerated in gaps were fir (69%) and beech (24%). The number of regeneration significantly depended on the gap size (p=0.027). The highest frequency of saplings was found in gaps of ≤100 m². The number of natural regeneration was significantly negatively correlated with gap size (r=–0.261, p=0.040). The density of silver fir regeneration was significantly higher in gaps of ≤100 m² and 101−250 m² (p<0.05). The share of fir in stand species composition effected on the number of silver fir and European beech regeneration. The results of this study demonstrated the utility of gap−based approach for better understanding ecosystem responses to tree cutting for modern forest management.

Opis:
Effects of ungulate pressure on the development of young generation of trees is one of the most important issues in ecology and forestry. Ungulate pressure influence on the development of natural regeneration has been also reported from several national parks. Our study on the effects of ungulate browsing on the young generation of trees was conducted on more than 500 sample plots controlled during one growing season. The overall browsing pressure ranged from 7.6% in seedlings to 20.3% in low saplings. The pressure of ungulates on the regeneration of Picea abies, the dominant species in the Tatra National Park, was by and large below 1%. Broadleaved species were browsed more frequently. The relationship between the plot altitudes and browsing intensity was statistically significant for seedlings and low saplings; at the higher altitudes, the browsing pressure was greater. There was also observed a statistically significant relationship between the type of former management and the browsing degree in seedlings; in the areas subjected to “landscape protection”, the intensity of browsing was higher when compared to strictly protected areas. Pressure exerted by ungulates on tree regeneration was very unevenly distributed, i.e. some plots were heavily browsed and many others - not browsed at all. The most affected tree species were Salix caprea and Sorbus aucuparia, although the percentage of browsed individuals rarely exceeded 50%. Other species favored by ungulates was Acer pseudoplatanus; despite the high browsing pressure, this species was present among seedlings and tall saplings, suggesting that it would be able to recruit to the tree layer. Abies alba was browsed less frequently than the deciduous trees; however, among the tall saplings it was the third most browsed species.

In the paper the density, height, diameter, slenderness and vitality of the 17 year−old pine young−growth stands depending on the basal area of the shelterwood (four thinning variants: G1−G4). The studies were carried out in eleven 70−90 year−old pine stands heavily damaged in the 80s of the past century by the nun moth (Lymantria monacha L.). With the development of the overstorey the growth, the vitality and the stability of young stands declined. In addition, a decrease in the survival of the young−growth stands under the dense canopy (variant G4) was recorded. A long−term maintenance of young stands under the shelter of the canopy in the areas of low annual precipitation (below 600 mm) requires the reduction of the dbh basal area to the level of at least 15 m3/ha before attaining the age of 15 years.

Opis:
This paper presents a study on radioactive contamination of dietary components of the roe deer (Capreolus capreolus) in Zhytomirske Polesie (Ukraine). Studies were conducted on two research plots in forests with similar levels of radioactive contamination, 29 ± 8 kBq/m2 - 55 ± 17 kBq/m2, in mixed coniferous forests and mixed broadleaved forests, which are the dominant forest types of the area. The highest level of radionuclide accumulation was observed in young oak seedlings. The dynamics for oak sprouts indicate that the accumulation coefficient reaches a maximum in September and August in the mixed coniferous and mixed broadleaved forests respectively. A comparison of mean values of the 137Cs accumulation coefficients in the shoots of undergrowth plants confirms that an increase in soil fertility leads to a reduction of radionuclides in plant phytomass. In the mixed broadleaved forests, average values of the coefficient of 137Cs accumulation in phytomass of blackberry was 26% and of raspberries 58% lower compared to mixed coniferous forests. The maximum contamination of phytomass was observed in August for oak, in October for aspen, and in July for birch. The highest specific activity of 137Cs in raspberry shoots occurs during the three summer months, whereas the peak in blackberry occurs from August to September. The dynamics of the specific activity of 137Cs in blueberry, cranberry and heather show an increase in radioactive contamination of phytomass towards the end of the growth period. The maximum concentration of 137Cs in shoots of heather and bilberry was recorded in October and for blueberry in August. Mushrooms in mixed coniferous forests can be ranked as follows according to the degree of 137Cs contamination: Cantharellus < Boletus edulis < Russula < Leccinum < Xerocomus badius < Paxillus involutus. In mixed broadleaved forests the ranking is Cantharellus < Boletus edulis < Russula < Xerocomus badius < Leccinum < Paxillus involutus. Within one habitat type, we observed fairly significant variations in 137Cs accumulation in fruit bodies of fungi species.

Opis:
The objective of the research was to determine the relationship between the dimensions and increment of the aboveground (easy to determine) and the belowground biomass of fir undergrowth in different shelter conditions. In the examined samples, the length of taproots (DKp) up to the age of 30 was dependent on its increment during the first three years of development. Later years saw an intensified growth of taproots. However, the differences from the first years of growth did not compensate for the differences in the first years. Reduced DKp growth was observed in the group of seedlings incrementing to a height of less than 4 cm. The height increment of fir undergrowth at about 20 years of age should not be less than 20 cm. The growth of roots and aboveground parts depends on other factors. The growth of roots was related to the growth of aboveground parts only to a small degree. Under the conditions of suppression, the extremely poor height increment of firs was compensated by the development of the aboveground biomass. With a moderate height increment (sufficient light availability) root growth was more intense. No clear relationship was found between the development of taproots and horizontal roots.

Opis:
The study aimed at analyzing the oak population structure was performed on the 29−hectare plot representing stands dominated by spruce in the strict reserve of the Białowieża National Park. It revealed that oaks represent two distinct cohorts: the old, emerged in the late 1800s, and the new that is being established in the area subject to mass decline of spruce. We suggest that the first regeneration wave was the result of ceasing the frequent ground fire regime that prevented the regeneration of trees except for pine. The current wave has been prompted by a set of changes in the habitat quality, following the breakdown of dense spruce−dominated stands. These changes, such as access to sunlight, accelerated decomposition of spruce litter, local exposure of mineral soil, and protective structures of lying spruce logs, provide regeneration advantage to oak and other intolerant species.
