Admirał Jerzy Świrski (1925–1947) wpisał się w historię Polski nie tylko jako doskonały oficer, dowódca i wychowawca marynarskich pokoleń, ale także jako twórca trzech znaczących planów rozwoju Polskiej Marynarki Wojennej: Głównych wytycznych dla sanacji Marynarki Wojennej (1925 r.), koncepcji funkcjonowania PMW w oparciu o bazy brytyjskie (1939 r.) oraz Rozwoju Marynarki Wojennej po wojnie (1943 r.).
Admiral Świrski (1925–1947) has distinguished himself not only as an excellent officer, commander and educator of generations of seamen but as an author of three significant plans of development of the Polish Navy: Main guidelines for improvements in the Polish Navy (1925), a concept of operating of the Polish Navy from British bases (1939), and for Development of the Polish Navy after WWII (1943).

The aim of the article is to present, in a statistical way, the death sentences which were adjudicated by judges of the Navy Court in Gdynia from 1945 to 1955. The article is concerned with the number of death sentences given by the Navy Court in Gdynia during that period. The author considers men under the sentence of death who were executed and those ones whose sentences were changed, the functioning of the Navy Court on Gdynia since it is beginning (on 2nd May 1945) to 4th April 1955, when the Act of reforming of military courts was introduced. During that period, 45 death penalties were adjudicated and 10 people were executed according to them. In the beginning of the article, the profiles of 14 judges who adjudicated the cases in which capital punishment was imposed are presented. The author presents the number of death sentences which eachjudge adjudicated. Next, the number of death sentences for every year of this period is shown. The reasons for the sentences, according to their legal justification, and the executions themselves are discussed here. The trials and appeal procedures are also shown. The article concludes with a figure which includes all death sentences which were adjudicated, along with their legal justifications and further procedural history if they were changed on appeal.

W artykule przedstawiono proces opracowania i wdrożenia w okresie 1997-1999 oznak przeznaczonych dla załóg jednostek Marynarki Wojennej. Autor opisuje tradycje wojskowych odznak pamiątkowych w Wojsku Polskim, przyczyny odstąpienia od nich w okresie PRL, historię odrodzenia ich idei po 1989 r. wraz z pierwszymi próbami czynionymi na tym polu od początku lat osiemdziesiątych. Główną część materiału zajmuje opis procesu opracowania odznak i oznak dla załóg okrętów Marynarki Wojennej, realizacji pomysłu oraz rezultatów i emocji, jakie budziły wśród marynarzy. Oznaki, choć pierwotnie pomyślane jako pamiątkowe emblematy, zostały zaadoptowane przez marynarzy jako ich własne wyróżniki. Część z nich trafiła na mundury, stając się ich widocznym elementem.
The article describes the project creating Polish Navy patches in the period 1997-1999. They were designed and directed immediately to crews of vessels and shipborne forces consist of auxiliary vessels, cutters and motorboats, etc. Author starts with information about Polish military traditions concerning military badges and sources of the patches idea. The next part presents history of project realization and stress the effects. Part of the patches was adopted by crews and became official element of seaman.s uniform. The patches were in use only for two years and therefore it is rather unknown details of Polish Navy history.

This article also presents how the procedures which had an influence on the shipyards in PRL were complicated and especially in the Polish Navy Shipyard.

The navy is a tool of state policy, including in particular security and foreign policies. Despite the fact that the division of policies in question and the systemic approach to the state’s security strategy emerged in research after the end of the Second World War, naval forces have always been a response to the projected external threats to the state and a means to achieve political goals. This article addresses the problem of assessing the use of the Navy as a tool of the security policy of the Second Republic of Poland. In this approach, the subject of the study is the policy of the Polish state in the years 1918-1939 in terms of ensuring security, mainly in terms of access to the Baltic Sea, and then its use and concept of defense in the light of the geopolitical conditions of the time. In order to realize the aim of the study, the author analyzes the influence of geopolitical conditions on Polish security policy, the tasks of the Navy of the Second Republic of Poland, and changes in its potential.

W niniejszym artykule podjęto próbę sportretowania kapelanów Ordynariatu Polowego WP. Stanowią oni jedną z grup kadry środowisk wojskowych, która podczas dokonującej się transformacji pełni ważną rolę w życiu społecznym wojska. Podstawą budowy tego portretu są opinie środowisk kadry oceniające dotychczasową działalność kapelanów w ich najbliższym otoczeniu służbowym.
The paper makes an attempt to portray chaplains of the field bishopric of the Polish Armed Forces. They constitute one of the groups of the military which have been fulfilling an important function during the transformation. The portrait is based on opinions by the professional military evaluating chaplains’ activity in their immediate surrounding.

The Territorial Defense Force (TDF) is the youngest branch of the Polish Armed Forces. However, the aggressive Russian policy of recent years has made it necessary to think about defense in broader terms, including this type of formations in the security strategy. The growing importance of the Baltic Sea in the policy of Poland and the resulting development of the Polish Navy and fleet make it necessary to tighten cooperation between the formations. In the future, the TDF, as a dynamically developing military formation, could also play a greater role in terms of defending Polish maritime interests. This article indicates some areas of potential cooperation between the Polish Navy and the TDF.

Siedemdziesiąta rocznica zbrodni katyńskiej to właściwy moment na przypomnienie miejsca i roli tego wydarzenia w dziejach Polskiej Marynarki Wojennej. Artykuł oparty jest na wynikach najnowszych badań przedmiotowych. Na podstawie zweryfikowanych materiałów źródłowych ukazano losy marynarzy na wschodnich rubieżach Rzeczypospolitej we wrześniu 1939 roku, sposób ich traktowania w sowieckich obozach jenieckich oraz listę oficerów Marynarki Wojennej zamordowanych w Katyniu i Charkowie.
The seventy anniversary of Katyń’s crime seems to be the right moment to remind the place and role of the crime mentioned in the history of Polish Navy. This tragic but still not well known part of Polish Navy’s history is a subject of this paper. Based on archive materials the author shows the history of seamen on the eastern border of Polish Republic in September 1939. The way the seamen were treated in soviet prisoner of war camps and the list of the names of Polish Navy’s officers murdered in Katyń and Charków are also presented in the paper.

Zaprezentowano główne założenia sylwetki absolwenta morskiej specjalności kierunku mechanika i budowa maszyn w aspekcie funkcjonowania systemu kształcenia kadr technicznych Marynarki Wojennej RP. Przybliżono problematykę prac badawczych podejmowanych w poszczególnych jednostkach organizacyjnych Wydziału oraz wiodące zagadnienia naukowe, które są od lat rozwijane w kierunku szeroko rozumianej eksploatacji techniki morskiej.
The paper characterizes didactic and scientific activity of the Faculty of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering of the Naval Academy. It presents the current didactic offer and the scope of research projects conducted. It also presents the profile of graduate majoring in marine mechanical engineering against the background of the system of education of technical personnel for the Polish Navy. It focuses on problems being dealt with in research projects in particular organizational units of the Faculty as well as the main scientific issues related to using marine technologies.

Okres transformacji personelu Polskiej Marynarki Wojennej lat 1918 – 1922 przebiegał w bardzo trudnych warunkach. Odbudowa państwa, walka o kształt granic, wojna polsko-rosyjska oraz brak zainteresowania sprawami morza sprawiły, że powstająca marynarka wojenna połączona z handlową borykała się z wieloma kłopotami organizacyjnymi. Istniało stosunkowo liczne zaplecze kadrowe. Wielu Polaków wywodzących się z flot byłych państw zaborczych ochotniczo wstępowało do marynarki. Przyjęci oficerowie, podoficerowie i marynarze stanowili cenny nabytek ze względu na bogate doświadczenie bojowe i wiedzę specjalistyczną. W obronie niepodległości wykazali się męstwem na polu walki, ponosząc znaczne straty. To właśnie dzięki ich powszechnemu patriotyzmowi i wielkiemu zaangażowaniu możliwe było powstanie morskiego rodzaju sił zbrojnych.
The transformation of the Polish Navy personnel between 1918 and 1922 took place in very difficult conditions. Rebuilding the state, battle for the delineation of borderlines, Polish- -Russian war and lack of interest in maritime issues resulted in very many problems the emerging navy connected with merchant fleet had to face. There were a relatively large number of skilled personnel. Many Poles with experience from fleets of former occupants volunteered to serve in the Polish navy. Those admitted were a great asset due to their combat experience and specialized knowledge. It was due to their patriotism and great dedication that the navy was able to come into being.

China has been expanding its presence on the South China Sea, which causes tensions in the region. However, when different aspects of the situation are analysed, an open armed conflict seems hardly possible. Looking at China’s activity in this body of water, it appears the Chinese state strives to safeguard its interests, primarily the economic ones, nonetheless it should be emphasized that it pursues its superpower ambitions at the same time.
