This article attempts to characterize the published fragments of Wioletta Grzegorzewska's diary from the beginning of the covid-19 pandemic and to evaluate its cognitive and artistic value. It takes a global literary tradition which has existed since ancient times, reflecting on the topics of various catastrophes affecting individual people and entire societies, into account.  The hardships of everyday life, dreams and illusions accompanying them are framed as a work showing the features of specific genres: diary, sylvia and reportage.

The paper by Jan Wolski — a Polish theoretician and cooperative activist — constitutes the third section of the book Spółdzielczy samorząd pracy [Cooperative Labour Self-Management], which he wrote over the years of 1943-1956, but which was never published as a whole. The manuscript, from the author’s family archives, includes the information that this piece was ―written in 1943 for the Inter-union Cooperative Committee (functioning underground in Warsaw during II World War) and the Socialist Planning Commission‖. Entitled Cooperative Labour Self-Management, this section of the planned book was published in the monthly magazine Więź [Bond], issue no. 2 of 1972, and in 2011 on the website Lewicowo.pl. It contains Wolski’s deliberations regarding the functioning of cooperative labour self-management under the conditions of a social and economic transformation heading towards a classless society. Wolski believed a universal labour-based political system to be one of the essential conditions of socialism, supplanting the old organisational forms originating from the capitalist period. As such, universal labour self-management together with other forms of popular self-government, and particularly user self-government, constitutes a transmission belt between the populace’s grassroots activity and top-down political organisation. Mindful of Edward Abramowski’s teachings, Wolski considered that only having the state based on self-governing cooperative institutions consisted the true realisation of universal will, and thereby the realisation of socialist ideals.

Opis:
The late XII and the early XIII c. were a period of important political changes on the Balkan Peninsula. Strez (1207-1214) was one of the local rulers which emerged in the mountain regions of the central Balkans in that time. We know the outline of his life from the sources such as: “Life of St. Symeon” by Stefan the First-Crowned, “Life of St. Sava” by Domentijan, “Life of St. Sava” by Theodosius of Chilandar and the letter of the Latin Emperor Henry from the January of 1212 or 1213. The paper presented here is divided into two parts. In the first part the Author presents the sources mentioned above and discusses major problems concerning their interpretation: the chronology of Strez’s life, territorial extent of his state, relations with the neighbor countries and circumstances surrounding his death. The second part comprises translation of the excerpt about Strez from the “Life of St. Sava” by Theodosius of Chilandar

Every society is directed by certain rules and regulations which form the basis of its activity. For modern communities the tolerance principle is acquiring ever greater meaning and importance. This work examines what tolerance is and how it is historically conditioned. Moreover, it reflects on the question of its limits. A spirit of tolerance is an attribute of mature, just and prudent men. A Christian learns this attitude from God. Christ points out the need for this kind of attitude in the parable of weeds.

Great hopes are put on stem-cells experiments, as they show new possible treatments for terminal diseases whose complete cure could only be dreamed of before. In this long and ongoing research, the ethical question must not be overlooked. This is so because progress is to be measured by the good which it provides for the well-being of humankind, both materially and spiritually. Financial profits, which are now to be expected in the field of medicine and biomedical technology, can by no means justify actions which would threaten the inviolability of human life. Every possible step should therefore be taken to ensure that the increasing knowledge base of this field is wisely deployed for the objective good of every human life.

Cardinal Elio Sgreccia was a distinguished teacher and a promoter of dignity and value of human life. He was widely recognized and greatly respected on the international arena. He is known as a founder of Italian bioethics with a personalistic profile. Among many functions that he performed during his life is also the one related to Łódzkie Studia Teologiczne. Since 2014 he was a member of the Scientific Council of this journal. This article is meant as an expression of gratitude to the late cardinal for the actions he took in bioethics. We present the outline of his personalistic bioethics with a triangular method which was formulated by him for this discipline.

Despite great progress in many diseases treatment and increasingly more advanced technical means, medicine unfortunately still remains helpless in confrontation with some illnesses. Many of them remain incurable. The situation in case of suicides looks differently. In this case we do not remain helpless. Therefore, it is important to search for effective means of self-aggression prevention. It is important to find out about complex etiology of suicidal behaviors in order to effectively help in those crisis situations. Each of them is a loud, though usually hidden, cry for help. The Catholic Church is engaged in suicide prevention. It is realized through the affirmation of human life and not only in her teaching but also in her activity both ministerial and through numerous emergency aid centers. She cooperates with various lay institutions and centers in order to provide the most effective prevention.

Human freedom is an extraordinary gift of God. It is intrinsically related to the truth and dignity of the human person created in God’s image. Freedom is a sign of God’s love for man and must be used properly. To understand the meaning of freedom, though requiring effort, will always bear much fruit. In fact, this understanding determines our moral life. Unfortunately, in contemporary society the essential bond between truth, the good and freedom has been largely lost or ignored. Yet, using and understanding this freedom is the primary task of every human being. Arriving at authentic freedom can be difficult because it depends upon fidelity to truth and love. The response to this nexus of freedom to truth and morality to faith is the essential form of every Christian vocation.

Dzisiaj często podejmuje się kwestię kryzysu wartości moralnych. Wskazuje się, na zrozumiałe w tym względzie, powiązanie z zagadnieniem sumienia, wskazując na konieczność właściwej jego formacji, które może i powinno stać się narzędziem odnowy społeczno-moralnej współczesnego społeczeństwa. Odnowa nie tylko samego człowieka, ale i świata, uzależniona jest w dużej mierze również od właściwej formacji ludzkiego sumienia. Nauczanie Jana Pawła II często na to uwarunkowanie jednoznacznie wskazuje. Tak jak człowiek jest pierwszą i podstawową drogą Kościoła (RH 14), tak podstawą drogą wszelkiej odnowy moralnej, społecznej i politycznej jest właściwa formacja sumienia. W dobie dzisiejszego pluralizmu i szeroko pojętej wolności człowieka, coraz częściej człowiek odwołuje się do własnego sumienia, wskazując na nie jako na ostateczną i nieomylną instancję własnego wartościowania i działania. Sumienie stanowi dla człowieka najbliższą „instancję” moralnego wartościowania i jest „ośrodkiem” oceny i podejmowania działania. Dodać od razu jednak należy, że nie ma ono przywileju nieomylności. Często zdarza się, iż ono błądzi, niewłaściwie dokonując wartościującej etycznie oceny. Sumienie, jako najbliższa i subiektywna norma, aby mogła stanowić pewny „drogowskaz” w podejmowaniu ocen i decyzji działania człowieka, powinno być wciąż formowane. Jest to proces nieustanny i wielowymiarowy. Niniejszy artykuł pragnie ukazać, na podstawie nauczania Jana Pawła II, jakie są podstawowe wskazania dotyczące formacji sumienia. Najpierw dokonana została krótka analiza dotycząca uzasadnienia konieczności formacji sumienia. Następnie wskazano na adekwatne środki tejże formacji. I tak, zgodnie z myślą Papieża, do podstawowych środków formacji zostały zaliczone: dążenie do umiłowania prawdy, zdobywanie właściwej postawy wobec wartości i norm obiektywnych, ze wskazaniem na szczególne miejsce, jakie zajmuje samo prawo Boże, a którego wypełnianie pozwala na pełną realizację siebie samego. Prawo to staje się jednocześnie drogocennym, obiektywnym „światłem”, punktem odniesienia dla subiektywnej normy, którym jest sumienie. Ważne w interesującej nas tutaj formacji, było zagadnienie autorytetów, zwłaszcza autorytetu Kościoła, który i w tej materii spełnia rolę Matki i Nauczycielki. Następnie została dokonana analiza niektórych szczegółowych, ale koniecznych środków formacji sumienia. Ostatnia część została poświęcona omówieniu środowiska, w których formacją się dokonuje. Spośród wielu, rodzina, szkoła i wspólnoty chrześcijańskie mają swoje specyficzne znaczenie i zadanie.

Brain death is one of the most important yet difficult issues in contemporary medicine, as well as in the field of ethics. The fundamental issue concerns the legitimacy of employing brain death as the criterion for determining the death of a human being. While acknowledging the reasons for introducing brain death as an indicator of human death, the controversial nature of this criterion cannot be ignored. The definition of death, when human beings are involved, must be free from arbitrary judgements. Thus, efforts to reach a precise definition cannot be reduced merely to issues related to organ transplants, which, unfortunately, have all too often played a paramount role in such discussions. The magisterium of the Catholic Church, while not claiming the right to establish the criteria of brain death determination, or to pronounce on the diagnostic tests aimed at arriving at such a conclusion, insists that the discussion of bioethical issues concerning death per se must take into account a sound anthropological vision, and that criteria of death must be formulated with the utmost rigour and certainty. In this way we are called to act as servants of life, and not the opposite.

This paper discusses the use of the names of heresies: bogomilism, messalianism and the heresy of autoproscoptae in 14th century Bulgarian sources. The author underlines that the names of bogomilism and messalianism do not always refer to dualism. Two wider unknown examples of such use of the name “messalinism” are recalled. In the Pseudo-Zonaras Nomocanon (CIAI 1160), the name “messalianism” is treated as being equal to the “heresy of autoproscoptae”. In the Rule for hermits, messalians are presented not as heretics, but as monks disregarding their rules.
