Opis:
In sludge samples collected in the "Centrum" wastewater treatment plant in Siemianowice Śląskie, Poland, the composition of aliphatic- and aromatic hydrocarbons and polar compound fractions were investigated by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Samples collected in accordance with Polish standards were extracted, the extracts were separated into fractions with preparative thin layer chromatography (TLC), which next were investigated by GC-MS. The following compound groups of the geochemical origin were identified: n-alkanes in the range of n-C14 to n-C.39, acyclic isoprenoids (mainly pristane and phytane), steranes, tri- and pentacyclic triterpanes. Based on the distribution of biomarkers and their parameters, it was established that the dominant component of extractable organic matter in sluge is petroleum material of an unspecified origin. Its geochemical features indicate that its most likely source was crude oil (or its products) of a relatively high degree of thermal maturity (catagenic stage of thermal evolution corresponding to vitrinite reflectance 0.7-0.8%). Aromatic hydrocarbons probably originated from petroleum also, though some of them can be attributed to the products of combustion or to sources such as bituminous coals, the ash from coal/biofuel combustion or coal wastes stored nearby.

Opis:
Woodpeckers are a very good indicators of forest naturalness. The fact that many species of these birds are in decline in central and western Europe resulted from changes in forest management (e.g. favouring coniferous forest, removal of dead trees). The aim of this research was to evaluate the importance of patches of deciduous species for the occurrence of some specialized woodpeckers in the conditions of Scots pine dominated stands. The study focused on species associated with deciduous forest, i.e. middle spotted woodpecker Leiopicus medius (L.), white−backed woodpecker Dendrocopos leucotos (Bechstein) and grey−headed woodpecker Picus canus (Gmelin). Statistical analyses were performed for the woodpeckers, which occurred in more than 10 territories. The studies were performed in 2015−2017 in the southern part of the Sandomierz Basin in three study areas (52,6−59 km²). Two plots were dominated by black alder Alnus glutinosa and oak Quercus sp., while the third one was characterized by the highest share of black alder, followed by silver birch Betula pendula and oak. Deciduous trees at the age over 80 years accounted for less than 2% of the total area of each plot. The most abundant bird species in patches of deciduous forest was the middle spotted woodpecker (25 territories), while the rarest was white−backed woodpecker (1 territory). Grey−headed woodpecker appeared in 12 territories. The density of woodpeckers in deciduous forest areas ranged from 0.45 territories/100 ha for grey−headed woodpecker to 1.54 territories/100 ha for the middle spotted woodpecker. In the alder patches we found all territories of grey−headed woodpecker, 24% territories of the middle spotted woodpecker and single territories of white−backed woodpecker. The patches dominated by oak accounted for about 76% of territories of middle spotted woodpecker. The average area of the patches with presence of middle spotted woodpecker and grey woodpecker was significantly higher than the patches where woodpeckers were absent. The middle spotted woodpecker occurred in the forest patches with the highest average age. Redundancy Analysis (RDA) demonstrated that the occurrence of middle spotted woodpecker was most strongly associated with the area of the patches over 10 ha, while the grey−headed woodpecker preferred mature forest stands of alder. These species abundance was negatively correlated with a patch area less than 10 ha.

Opis:
The occurrence of the Chinese mussel Sinanodonta woodiana (Lea) was discovered in June and July 2011 in a fish pond located about 15 km north-west of Rzeszów (Subcarpathian region). Thirty six specimens (6 dead and 30 live) of the species were found. The Chinese mussel was absent in two other fish ponds in the same area, however the swan mussel Anodonta cygnea (L.) was found in these ponds (80 individuals: 45 dead and 35 live). At the time when the survey was conducted the ponds had already been drained for 3 to 8 months, so both populations will probably disappear from the locality. Nevertheless the new finding of the Chinese mussel in fish ponds confirms the possibility of occurrence of the species also in the waters with natu- ral thermal regime.

The main features of the Cloud Computing system developed at IFJ PAN are described. The project is financed from the structural resources provided by the European Commission and the Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education (Innovative Economy, National Cohesion Strategy). The system delivers a solution for carrying out computer calculations on a Private Cloud computing infrastructure. It consists of an intuitive Web based user interface, a module for the users and resources administration and the standard EC2 interface implementation. Thanks to the distributed character of the system it allows for the integration of a geographically distant federation of computer clusters within a uniform user environment.
