Opis:
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of Schiff base metal complex on the bio-compatible hydroxyapatite (HAp) ceramics. The reason for that was to produce, as the final product, the HAp in powder form, with extraordinary features like analgesic, antibacterial properties. This effect was provided by doping HAp powder with some Schiff base complexes during the powder extraction process. Schiff base complex used in the study was synthesized by condensation of primary amines with carbonyl compounds. The chemical structures of the synthesized compounds were confirmed by means of infrared (IR) spectroscopy and elemental analysis. Characterizations of the extracted HAp powders were carried out by using scanning electron microscopy for surface analysis and EDS analysis, X-ray diffraction for phase determination and grain size distribution. The bactericide effects of Zn SAE-added pure HAp were tested on E.Coli bacteria for the content range of 0-7 wt.% of Zn-SAE. Consequently, bacterial activity of the calcium phosphate resulting powders was evolved by adding the Zn SAE Schiff base complex.

Opis:
In this study, the influence of Ti content on the microstructure of the martensite bcc α'), which was formed by thermal effect, was investigated by scanning electron microscope and transmission electron microscope observations, in Fe-30Ni-xTi (x=0.8, 1.8, 2.6) alloys. The crystallographic orientation relationship between austenite fcc (γ) and thermally induced bcc (α') martensite was found to be as (111)_{γ}/(011)_{α} (Kurdjumov-Sachs (K-S)), by the electron diffraction analysis. The martensitic transformation temperature (M_{s}) of α' martensite was determined as -41°, -62°, and -76 ° in the alloys with 0.8%, 1.8%, and 2.6% Ti concentration, respectively. The Mössbauer spectrometer analysis has been revealed by a paramagnetic character for the austenite phase and magnetically order character for α' martensite phase. Hyperfine magnetic field, isomer shift and volume fractions of phases were determined by the Mössbauer spectroscopy.

Opis:
In this study, methyl jasmonate were applied to strawberry cultivars, and the pomological and biochemical characteristics of the fruits were investigated. The highest increase in fruit weight was determined in the Honeoye cultivar and it was detected in the application of 0.50 mM MeJa according to the control group. When the organic acid contents of fruits were examined, it was determined that the dominant acid was citric acid and the maximum range (Control: 1.49 g kg⁻¹; 0.50 mM MeJa: 16.49 g kg⁻¹) was in the Seascape cultivar. When the ellagic acid content of the fruits was examined, the highest increase (Control: 13.350 mg 100 g⁻¹, 0.25 mM MeJa: 22.768 mg 100 g⁻¹) was found in the Sweet Ann cultivar. In this study, it was determined that appropriate concentrations of MeJa should be preferred in cultivation of strawberry and these concentrations affected the fruit quality parameters.

Opis:
Oxidative stress has been defined as an imbalance between higher cellular levels of reactive oxygen species (ROS). If ROS are not controlled by enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, they can cause oxidative injury. Brains are protected by antioxidants from nitro-oxidative and peroxidative damage. The antioxidant enzymes are superoxide dismutase and catalase, which contain zinc (Zn) and copper (Cu) as cofactors. Also, trace elements have important effects on brain development and function. In this study, we aimed to investigate the effect of curcumin administration on the exchange of nitric oxide (NO) and on the calcium (Ca), iron (Fe), Zn, Cu, and magnesium (Mg) levels in brain tissue. Animals (a total of 30 adult Wistar albino rats, 4-6 months old) were randomly divided into three groups (n = 10): control, formaldehyde-exposed, and treated daily with curcumin after formaldehyde exposure (100 mg kg-1). At the end of the experimental period (the 14th day), NO levels were measured by ELISA. Ca, Fe, Zn, Cu, and Mg levels in whole-brain tissues were determined by Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry in all groups. NO and Mg levels were increased and Cu and Ca levels were decreased in the group treated with curcumin when compared with the formaldehyde-only group. These changes were not statistically significant (P > 0.05). However, Fe levels were significantly reduced and Zn levels were significantly increased (P < 0.05). In conclusion, the administration of curcumin as an antioxidant may be a factor in regulating the mineral balance of the brain in conditions of oxidative stress caused by the application of FA. Curcumin may play a role in reducing FA-induced cellular damage, and may contribute to the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

Opis:
Based on density functional theory (DFT) calculations, we present electronic and magnetic properties of nanometallic homo-nuclear chromium-based molecular rings $Cr_{9}F_{9}Cl_{2}(O_{2}C-C(CH_{3})_{3})_{17}$ recently synthesized. The magnetic moments are calculated, the spin density maps are discussed and the exchange interaction parameter is extracted. The complementary studies are carried out using the Falicov-Kimball model which reproduces very well the energy levels determined by different magnetic broken symmetry configurations obtained by DFT.
