Opis:
One of most important issues concerning technical objects is the increase of their operating performance. For a ship this performance mainly depends on the efficiency of its main propulsion system and the resistance generated during its motion on water. The overall ship resistance, in turn, mainly depends on the hull friction resistance, closely related with the presence of different types of roughness on the hull surface, including underwater part biofouling. The article analyses the effect of hull biofouling on selected parameters characterising the efficiency of the ship propulsion system with adjustable propeller. For this purpose a two-year research experiment was performed on a sailing vessel during its motor navigation phases. Based on the obtained results, three groups of characteristics were worked out for different combinations of engine rotational speed and adjustable propeller pitch settings. The obtained results have revealed that the phenomenon of underwater hull biofouling affects remarkably the parameters characterizing propulsion system efficiency. In particular, the development of the biofouling layer leads to significant reduction of the speed of navigation.

One of key ways of assuring a high level of reliability of a ship power plant is to design redundancy of its structural elements, for example redundancy of prime drivers, drivelines etc. This paper deals with issues related to the redundancy as a way increasing dependability of the ship power and propulsion systems. Especially, fundamental characteristics of dependability, major design strategies influencing the reliability, and types of redundancies related to ship power and propulsion systems are presented.

Opis:
Power and propulsion systems of offshore units must be of a very high level of reliability. The loss of ability to perform functions of their components causes generally to very high economic losses, which may be increased by unused the weather window resulting to postponing the planned offshore operations. To ensure carrying out so expensive offshore operations in the most reliable way, various types of redundancies are built-in ship power plants. This paper deals with issues related to application of redundancy in ship power plants of offshore vessels. Especially, evolution of redundancy application in ship power plants, and design solution of redundancy for offshore vessels are presented. Moreover, the specifics of these offshore operations so important from the point of view of minimizing financial losses due to any interruptions caused by failures of power and propulsion systems are discussed in detailed way.

W artykule przedstawiono zarys historii pojęć związanych z projektowaniem maszyn, w szczególności zaś omówiono rozwój terminologii technicznej i naukowej w powiązaniu z rozwojem cywilizacji technicznej oraz zaprezentowano zasady przyjmowania nazewnictwa technicznego na ziemiach polskich w okresie rewolucji przemysłowo-technicznej. Ponadto przedstawiono w ujęciu historycznym dzieje terminu „projekt”, wskazując początek jego współczesnego znaczenia. W zakończeniu artykułu zaprezentowano obecne znaczenie pojęć projektowania i konstruowania stosowanych w ojczystej literaturze przedmiotowej, a także ich interpretacje w literaturze anglojęzycznej.
A brief history of terms connected with machine design is presented in this paper. Particularly, the development of technical and scientific terminology as a consequence of technical civilization growth and principles of taking Polish technical nomenclature in a period of the Industrial Revolution are described. Moreover, a trace of the term ‘project’ is presented in the historical view with indication of its genesis. In conclusion, senses of terms ‘project’ and ‘design’ applied in Polish subject bibliography are presented together with their interpretation in English.

Opis:
This paper presents a two-dimensional model of heat flow through structural elements of cylinder of two-stroke cross-head engine of longitudinal scavenging, obtained with the use of the elementary balance method. Special attention was paid to the modelling of temperature distribution within engine cylinder liner of "wet" construction. For modelling the unsteady heat flow multi-dimensional equations with Dirichlet - Fourier boundary conditions, were used. For the Fourier boundary conditions in the engine cylinder space local values of convective and radiant heat-transfer coefficients were applied. For calculations the KM3R method of solving differential equations, based on the elementary balance method, was used. Modelling results have been presented in the form of the temperature field of engine cylinder structural elements in function of the changeable angle of crankshaft position.

Opis:
The frequent cause of ships’ detentions by port authorities are abnormalities of ship power plant functioning. Each extended ship lay time in port results in waste of ship operating time thus costs rise to shipowners. This is connected with improper ship power plant management. In order to avoid this, a ship engineer should have at his disposal computer aided system supporting him in managing of ship power plant. Such a system can be worked out on condition that mathematical formula which represents the decision – making process of an engineer has been built. The present work shows approache to the problem according to the situation in which the engineer is made to take certain decisions. In formulation of the most substantial operating states of a ship like lay time in harbour and sea voyage the ‚knapsack algorithm’ was applied. For both approaches objective function was formulated.

This paper presents comparison of two methods for assessment of hazards to ship power plant operator, used in the preliminary stage of ship power plant design process: the matrix method and that based on fuzzy logic. And, it reports this way results of realization of the research projects [1, 2] financed by Polish Ministry of Science and Higher Education.The assessment of hazard to ship power plant operator, carried out at preliminary design stages meets certain difficulties resulting from that information connected with his safety are scarce or associated with high uncertainty. Therefore fuzzy logic was decided to be used to safety assesment. It was found out that at preliminary design stages application of the fuzzy-logic-based assessment yielded better results as compared with the classic matrix method.

This paper presents application of fuzzy logic to assessment of degree of hazard to ship power plant operator. For the assessment a system of computer-aided identification of hazardous zone within ship power plant, was used. The system’s variables representing the subject-matter knowledge in safety design area were transformed into fuzzy sets by means of appropriate linguistic variables and membership functions. The assessing of safety level of operator with the use of fuzzy inference was performed by means of an expert system programmed in the PROLOG LPA language.

In this paper a method is presented of determining - on the basis of information available in the preliminary phase of ship power plant design - the set of hazardous and noxious factors for the operator, as well as of converting them into the set of input variables to a hazardous zone identification system. Basing on the choice of values of determined decision variables, the system's user is able to determine potential hazardous zones for the ship power plant operator. Conversions of the determined factors into the set of the system's input variables were performed by using the knowledge achieved from the side of experts in ship power plant designing and operating.
