Opis:: The aim of this paper is to present a profile of literary critic Marcel Reich-Ranicki (1920-2013), who lived on the borderland of three cultures: Polish, Jewish, and German. The paper attempts to reconstruct the main phases of Reich-Ranicki’s life in Poland, including an analysis of the critic’s interests and opinions about Polish literature, as well as his concept of a ‘spiritual homeland’. The status of M. Reich is studied in relation to the category of the alien commonly encountered in the discourse of the humanities. Reich’s strangeness is presented in three dimensions: space, culture and mentality. The paper also proves that it was the trauma of the Holocaust that had exerted the major impact on Reich-Ranicki’s personal memories and accounts.

Opis:: The primary aim of the paper is the analysis of the unpublished short story In Kattowitz written by Thomas Bernhard in 1964, most probably as a result of his visit to the then-communist Poland. The paper reconstructs the origins of Bernhard’s work and presents the image of Poland shown in the short story. Also the main motifs and specific stylistic properties of the work are analyzed. The author of the paper also makes an attempt at answering the question to what extent Thomas Bernhard referred back to the motifs appearing in the unpublished short story in his later literary works.

Opis:: The primary aim of the paper is the analysis of Karl Kraus’ satirical statements on early 20th century Austria. A particular attention is focused on his fierce criticism of the press and its purely materialistic attitude to reporting current events, as well as on his condemnation of the language and spiritual condition of Austrian society. In addition, Kraus’ reactions to Hitler’s coming to power in 1930s are discussed. The paper also points to the impact of Kraus on the modern discourse pertaining to language and culture.

Opis:: This paper discusses the importance of working with a literary text (especially poetry) in the context of the foreign language (FL) classroom. In order to facilitate FL teaching, language teachers are encouraged to use poetry and rhetorical devices occurring in such texts (e.g. rhymes, alliteration, metaphor etc.). The paper offers some teaching procedures and techniques based on rhetorical devices, which may prove valuable in raising FL students’ motivation and language awareness while having fun analyzing quality literary texts.
