Opis:
This paper deals with the nonlinear forced vibration of nanocomposite beams resting on a nonlinear viscoelastic foundation and subjected to a transverse periodic excitation. It is considered that the functionally graded carbon nanotubereinforced composite (FG-CNTRC) beam is made of an isotropic matrix reinforced by either aligned- or randomly oriented-straight single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) with four types of distributions through the thickness direction of the beam. Both the Eshelby–Mori–Tanaka approach and extended rule of mixtures are used to predict the effective material properties of the FG-CNTRC beams. The mathematical model of the beam is developed based on the Euler–Bernoulli beam theory together with von Kármán assumptions. Subsequently, the accurate analytical solutions of the governing equation are obtained through applying the variational iteration method (VIM). Several examples are verified to have higher accuracy than those available in the literature. In addition, a comprehensive investigation into the effect of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) distribution, CNTs volume fraction, end supports, vibration amplitude, and foundation coefficients on the vibrational characteristics of the nanocomposite beam is performed and some new results are presented.

Opis:
This work examines the multiscale variability in sea level along the English Channel coasts (NW France) using a wavelet multiresolution decomposition of water level values and climate oscillations in order to gain insights in the connection between the global atmospheric circulation and the local-scale variability of the monthly extreme surges. Changes in surges have exhibited different oscillatory components from the intermonthly (~3–6-months) to the interannual scales (~1.5-years, ~2–4-years, ~5–8-years) with mean explained variances of ~40% and ~25% of the total variability respectively. The correlation between the multiresolution components of surges and 28 exceptional stormy events with different intensities has revealed that energetic events are manifested at all timescales while moderate events are limited to short scales. By considering the two hypotheses of (1) the physical mechanisms of the atmospheric circulation change according to the timescales and (2) their connection with the local variability improves the prediction of the extremes, the multiscale components of the monthly extreme surges have been investigated using four different climate oscillations (Sea Surface Temperature (SST), Sea-Level Pressure (SLP), Zonal Wind (ZW), and North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO)); results show statistically significant correlations with ~3–6-months, ~1.5-years, ~2–4-years, and ~5–8-years, respectively. Such physical links, from global to local scales, have been considered to model the multiscale monthly extreme surges using a time-dependent Generalized Extreme Value (GEV) distribution. The incorporation of the climate information in the GEV parameters has considerably improved the fitting of the different timescales of surges with an explained variance higher than 30%. This improvement exhibits their nonlinear relationship with the large-scale atmospheric circulation.

nonlinear discrete-time systems optimal passivity-based control

Opis:
In this paper, a passivity-based optimal controlmethod for a broad class of nonlinear discrete-time systems is proposed. The resulting control law is a static output feedback law which is practically preferred with respect to the state feedback law and is simple to implement. The control law has a general structure with adjustable parameters which are tuned, using an optimization method (genetic algorithm), to minimize an arbitrary cost function. By choosing this cost function it is possible to shape the transient response of the closed-loop system, as it is desirable. An illustrative ex ample shows the effectiveness of the proposed approach.

Opis:
This paper proposes a design procedure for observer-based controllers of discrete-time switched systems, in the presence of state’s time-delay, nonlinear terms, arbitrary switching signals, and affine parametric uncertainties. The proposed switched observer and the state-feedback controller are designed simultaneously using a set of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs).The stability analysis is performed based on an appropriate Lyapunov–Krasovskii functional with one switched expression, and in the meantime, the sufficient conditions for observer-based stabilization are developed. These conditions are formulated in the form of a feasibility test of a proposed bilinear matrix inequality (BMI) which is a non-convex problem. To make the problem easy to solve, the BMI is transformed into a set of LMIs using the singular value decomposition of output matrices. An important advantage of the proposed method is that the established sufficient conditions depend only on the upper bound of uncertain parameters. Furthermore, in the proposed method, an admissible upper bound for unknown nonlinear terms of the switched system may be calculated using a simple search algorithm. Finally, the efficiency of the proposed controller and the validity of the theoretical results are illustrated through a simulation example.
