Opis:
The stratigraphy of the Numidian Formation of northern Tunisia and its internal organization are updated. Planktonic foraminifera point to a mainly Oligocene–Early Miocene age of this formation in the majority of the sections studied. Some key lithological horizons are recognized within the early Miocene succession, allowing lateral correlation between the outcrops of the Mogod and Kroumirie mountains. These include: (1) a conglomeratic interval, up to 1–2 m thick and rich in reworked glauconitic boulders, limestone fragments of the Tellian (Eocene) and pectinid bivalves; and (2) a relatively continuous glauconitic level. In the new stratigraphic scheme, the Zouza, Ben Metir and Sejnene sections represent the entire Numidian Formation. A lower unit (200–700 m thick), highly pelitic with subordinate sandstone beds was distinguished, overlain by an upper unit which is sandier, especially in its uppermost part (1,000–1,500 m thick). In the present study, these have been stratigraphically dated as Oligocene–Early Miocene p.p. (Rupelian–Chattian; P19–P21 zones) to Aquitanian (N4 Zone) and Miocene (Aquitanian–early Burdigalian; N4–N5 zones), respectively. In the areas studied, the sandy succession assigned to the Kroumirie Member begins with a sandstone unit with an erosional base or a major discontinuity, locally marked by conglomerates made up of various reworked components. It rests generally on a thick shale unit that characterises the upper part of the Zouza Member. The thinner, uppermost succession of the Numidian Formation represents the Babouch Member, dated as Burdigalian (N6–N7 zones). Within the framework of the new proposal, the total stratigraphic thickness of the Numidian Formation in northern Tunisia does not exceed 2,200–2,600 m. Internally, the Numidian Formation is transected by the Intra-Numidian Thrust and back-thrust faults, associated with faulted folds that are recognized in outcrop on different scales and in seismic sections. Along these thrust and/or reverse faults, the middle to upper Eocene deposits have undergone uplift and are exposed at the surface (e.g., Dowar Larmel in Meloula-Tabarka, Gaâret Sejnene and Sidi M’chreg sections).

Opis:
We investigate the problem of combined spatial and temporal instabilities of electrically driven viscous jets with finite electrical conductivity in the presence of either constant or variable applied electric field. A mathematical model leads to a lengthy equation for the unknown spatial growth rate and temporal growth rate of the disturbances. This equation is solved numerically using Newton’s method. We investigated two cases of water jets and glycerol jets. For water jets and in the case of either constant or variable applied field, we found two new modes of instabilities which grow simultaneously in time and space and lead to significant reduction in the jet radius. However, in the case of glycerol jets, we found two new modes of instabilities in the presence of constant applied field but only one mode of instability in the presence of variable applied field. For the glycerol jets, the combined temporal and spatial instabilities are less stronger and lead to an increase in the jet radius. The instabilities for both types of water and glycerol jets were found to be restricted to particular domain in their wavelength and were enhanced with the strength of the electric field.
Autorzy prezentują problem złożonych przestrzenno-czasowych niestabilności elektrycznie indukowanych strumieni wiskotycznych o skończonej przewodności elektrycznej w obecności stałego albo zmiennego pola. Model matematyczny sprowadzono do skomplikowanego równania, w którym niewiadomą jest czasowe i przestrzenne tempo wzrostu zakłóceń w strumieniu. Równanie to rozwiązano numerycznie, używając metody Newtona.

Opis:
Ship’s bridge simulators are very popular in the worldwide training and assessment of merchant navy deck officers. The examiners of simulator courses presently do not have a method to quantitatively assess the performance of a group or an individual. Some examiners use checklists and others use their gut feeling to grade competence. In this paper a novel methodology is established that uses the Evidential Reasoning algorithm to quantitatively assess the Non-Technical Skills (NTS) of merchant navy officers. To begin with, interviews were conducted with experienced deck officers to develop the taxonomy and behavioural markers that would be used in the assessment process. A random selection of students studying towards their Chief Officer’s Certificate of Competency were recruited to have their NTS to be observed in a ship’s bridge simulator. The participant’s behaviour was rated against five criteria and the subsequent data was entered into the Evidential Reasoning algorithm to produce a crisp number. The results that were generated demonstrate that this approach provides a reliable method to quantitatively assess the NTS performance of merchant navy officers in a simulated bridge environment.

Opis:
A review of maritime accidents conducted over the last decade confirms that human error is the main contributing factor in these incidents. Well‐developed Non‐Technical Skills (NTS) can reduce the effects of human error. NTS include both interpersonal and cognitive skills such as situation awareness, teamwork, decision‐making, leadership, managerial skills, communication and language skills. In a crisis situation good NTS allow a deck officer to recognise the problem quickly, take action to manage the situation, and utilise the available team members safely and effectively. This paper identifies the importance of NTS training for merchant navy deck officers. It also highlights room for improvement in the existing HELM training. Research has shown that at present the structure of HELM training is not very effective. The other safety critical domains’ efforts into NTS developments are investigated and examples of best practice are adapted into the maritime domain’s NTS training. Suggestions are given for improvements to the HELM course based on proven successful methods in other safety critical domains (aviation and anaesthesia). A subsequent Cost Benefit Analysis for improving deck officers’ NTS is also carried out through the use of Bayesian Networks and Decision Tree Modelling.
