Opis:
Cashew nut shell liquid (CNSL) represents the largest readily available bioresource of alkenyl phenolic compounds. (CNSL) and its derivatives are widely used in polymer-based industries, synthesis of chemicals and intermediates, including bactericides, insecticides and surface active agents. In this work extraction of cashew nut shell liquid from cashew nut shell (CNS) was carried out by using the Soxhlet extraction method in the presence of polar & non-polar solvents. From the extracted CNSL, anacardic acid was selectively isolated and acid free CNSL was treated with liquor ammonia to separate the cardanol and cardol in the stepwise manner. Comparative study for the extracted CNSL and S-was performed. Higher amount of extracted CNSL was obtained from polar solvents. They were all characterized using quantitative analysis by HPLC.

Opis:
The canopy structure of wheat changes significantly with growth stages and leads to changes in reflectance anisotropy. Bidirectional reflectance distribution function characterises the reflectance anisotropy of the targets, which can be approximated. Spectrodirectional reflectance measurements on wheat crop were acquired using a field goniometer system. The bidirectional reflectance spectra were acquired at 54 view angles to cover the hemispheric span up to 60° view zenith. The observations were made during early growth stages till maturity of the crop. The anisotropy was not constant for all wavelengths and anisotropic factors clearly revealed spectral dependence, which was more pronounced in near principal plane. In near infrared, wheat canopy expressed less reflectance anisotropy because of higher multiple scattering. The broad hotspot signature was noticeable in reflectance of canopy whenever view and solar angles were close. Distinct changes in bidirectional reflectance distribution function were observed during booting to flowering stages as the canopy achieves more uniformity, height and head emergence. The function clearly reveals bowl shape during heading to early milking growth stages of the crop. Late growth stages show less prominent gap and shadow effects. Anisotropy index revealed that wheat exhibits changes in reflectance anisotropy with phenological development and with spectral bands.

Opis:
This paper has attempted to scrutinize the bearing performance of a rough short bearing assisted by a ferrofluid with the help of numerical modelling of the Shliomis model. The transverse roughness is calculated stochastically by averaging the Christensen and Tonder models. A non-zero mean is assumed for the probability density function for the random variable that determines the roughness of the bearing which is symmetrical. This attempt is made to create a more pragmatic and applicable situation. Expressions that can signify a dimensionless form of pressure and bearing load carrying capacity are found using Reynolds’ equation. The load carrying capacity equation is then solved numerically with the help of Simpson’s 1/3 rule to analyze the impact on the bearing system. From the graphical representation, it can be concluded that ferrofluid lubrication based on the Shliomis model can significantly neutralize the negative effects of the bearing roughness on its load carrying capacity.

Integration of advanced electrical machines with electrical power systems and renewable energy is at the heart of the dedicated Liquid Hydrogen Laboratory (LHL) at the University of Cambridge. Generation, storage and use of the hydrogen in conjunction with a patented dynamic energy storage system are an integral part of the proposed combined heat and power (CHP) IEIM Project. The aim of the project is to address intelligent energy infrastructure management IEIM of a smart micro grid, which combines hydrogen and electricity. To build a powerful relational database for the entire physical infrastructure based on combined heat and power elements, a sub-system needs to be established to monitor the status of interconnectivity to the grid. This information will be mapped onto the database to provide a real-time view of the energy network's physical interconnectivity with the grid, significantly reducing the environmental impact of the total electricity supply system. Considering the nature of the heat and power elements fibre optic based sensing techniques will remotely monitor the patching fields and provide an accurate map of the connectivity and constantly monitor changes in real-time.

Opis:
The near net shaped manufacturing ability of squeeze casting process requiresto set the process variable combinations at their optimal levels to obtain both aesthetic appearance and internal soundness of the cast parts. The aesthetic and internal soundness of cast parts deal with surface roughness and tensile strength those can readily put the part in service without the requirement of costly secondary manufacturing processes (like polishing, shot blasting, plating, hear treatment etc.). It is difficult to determine the levels of the process variable (that is, pressure duration, squeeze pressure, pouring temperature and die temperature) combinations for extreme values of the responses (that is, surface roughness, yield strength and ultimate tensile strength) due to conflicting requirements. In the present manuscript, three population based search and optimization methods, namely genetic algorithm (GA), particle swarm optimization (PSO) and multi-objective particle swarm optimization based on crowding distance (MOPSO-CD) methods have been used to optimize multiple outputs simultaneously. Further, validation test has been conducted for the optimal casting conditions suggested by GA, PSO and MOPSO-CD. The results showed that PSO outperformed GA with regard to computation time.

Opis:
Chemical bonded resin sand mould system has high dimensional accuracy, surface finish and sand mould properties compared to green sand mould system. The mould cavity prepared under chemical bonded sand mould system must produce sufficient permeability and hardness to withstand sand drop while pouring molten metal through ladle. The demand for improved values of permeability and mould hardness depends on systematic study and analysis of influencing variables namely grain fineness number, setting time, percent of resin and hardener. Try-error experiment methods and analysis were considered impractical in actual foundry practice due to the associated cost. Experimental matrices of central composite design allow conducting minimum experiments that provide complete insight of the process. Statistical significance of influencing variables and their interaction were determined to control the process. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) test was conducted to validate the model statistically. Mathematical equation was derived separately for mould hardness and permeability, which are expressed as a non-linear function of input variables based on the collected experimental input-output data. The developed model prediction accuracy for practical usefulness was tested with 10 random experimental conditions. The decision variables for higher mould hardness and permeability were determined using desirability function approach. The prediction results were found to be consistent with experimental values.

Opis:
In this work, the free vibration behaviour of A357 composite plate reinforced with dual particle size (DPS) (3 wt.% coarse + 3 wt.% fine, 4 wt.% coarse + 2 wt.% fine, and 2 wt.% coarse + 4 wt.% fine) SiC is evaluated using the finite element method. To this end, first-order shear deformation theory (FSDT) has been used. The equations of motion have been derived using Hamilton’s principle and the solution has been obtained through condensation technique. A thorough parametric study was conducted to understand the effect of reinforcement size and weight fraction, boundary conditions, aspect ratio and length-to-width ratio of plate geometry on natural frequencies of A357/DPS-SiC composite plates. Results reveal significant influence of all the above variables on natural frequency of the composite plates. In all the cases, A357 composite plate reinforced with 4 wt.% coarse and 2 wt.% fine SiC particles displayed the highest natural frequency owing to its higher elastic and rigidity modulus. Further, the natural frequencies increase with decrease in aspect ratio of the plate geometry. Natural frequency also decreases with increase in the number of free edges. Lastly, increasing the length-to-width ratio drastically improves the natural frequency of the plates.

The structures of the compounds were elucidated with the aid of elemental analysis, IR, 1H-NMR and mass spectral data. These novel synthesized compounds were evaluated for antibacterial activity against two gram-positive bacteria (Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus pyogenus) and two gram-negative bacteria (Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Escherichia coli). The title compounds were also studied for their antifungal activity with Candida albicans, Aspergillus niger, Aspergillus clavatus using the broth dilution technique. Most of the compounds were the best bio-active desired antibacterial analog with less MIC value against different tested strains.
