The article discusses selected digital collections that form a source of information on the life of Polish emigrants in the USA in the first half of the 20th century, focusing mainly on materials about the Polish diaspora living in the city of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The digital resources of several American institutions are presented: Ellis Island Foundation, University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Milwaukee Polonia Roman Kwasniewski Photographs), and National Archives. The text is an attempt to analyze the resources available on the Internet, documenting the history of the author's family members who emigrated from Galicia to the United States over a hundred years ago.

In the clinical picture of sclerosis multiplex (SM) the neurological functioning of patients is affected, besides the neurological symptoms, by neuropsychological symptoms, which include emotional disturbances, cognitive dysfunction, and personality factors. Memory, attention or executive functions disturbances affect reduction of adaptability, which play a key role in the quality of life of patients. Prevalence studies using large, community and clinical samples indicate that roughly 45–60% of patients with SM are cognitively impaired. Cognitive disorders with mobility disabilities may hinder daily functioning, often they become obstacle to take life tasks, so there is a need to develop new and effective rehabilitation programs for this group of patients. Neuropsychological rehabilitation of patients with SM is covered by the various types of impacts, especially reduction of cognitive deficits as much as possible. There is increasingly use of computer programs to cognitive trainings in neuropsychologist work. The basis for this type of impact is evidence of neuroplastic changes in people with SM. The greatest therapeutic effects are achieved through the cooperation of an interdisciplinary team, including neurologist, psychiatrist, neuropsychologist and physiotherapist. Obtaining such assistance by patients with SM still remains difficult in Poland. An example illustrating the effective usage of neuropsychological rehabilitation with the help of computer programs is a case study of a patient with SM.
W obrazie klinicznym stwardnienia rozsianego (łac. sclerosis multiplex, SM) na funkcjonowanie chorych wpływają – poza objawami neurologicznymi – współwystępujące objawy neuropsychologiczne, do których zalicza się zaburzenia emocjonalne i dysfunkcje poznawcze oraz czynniki osobowościowe. Dysfunkcje w sferze procesów uwagi, funkcji wykonawczych czy pamięci mają wpływ na zmniejszenie zdolności adaptacyjnych, które są kluczowe dla jakości życia chorych. W badaniach dużych grup klinicznych udowodniono obecność dysfunkcji poznawczych u 40–65% pacjentów. Najczęściej na SM zapadają osoby młode, u których dysfunkcje ruchowe i zaburzenia poznawcze mogą utrudniać codzienne funkcjonowanie, a często też stają się przeszkodą w podejmowaniu zadań życiowych. Dlatego też istnieje potrzeba opracowania nowych i skutecznych programów rehabilitacyjnych dla tej grupy chorych. Rehabilitacja neuropsychologiczna pacjentów z SM obejmuje różnego rodzaju oddziaływania, których celem jest leczenie dysfunkcji poznawczych. W pracy neuropsychologa coraz częściej jako narzędzie terapeutyczne wykorzystuje się programy komputerowe służące do treningów poznawczych. Podstawą dla tego typu oddziaływań są dowody świadczące o zmianach neuroplastycznych u osób ze stwardnieniem rozsianym. Największe efekty terapeutyczne osiąga się jednak dzięki współpracy zespołu interdyscyplinarnego, w którego skład powinni wchodzić neurolog, psychiatra, neuropsycholog oraz rehabilitant. W Polsce uzyskanie takiej pomocy przez pacjentów z SM jest nadal bardzo trudne. Przykładem obrazującym skuteczne zastosowanie rehabilitacji neuropsychologicznej za pomocą programów komputerowych jest studium przypadku chorego ze stwardnieniem rozsianym.

Celem artykułu jest zwrócenie uwagi na rolę kontaktów z zagranicznymi instytucjami w procesie podnoszenia usług i budowania wizerunku biblioteki akademickiej. Doświadczenia Biblioteki Głównej Uniwersytetu Pedagogicznego w Krakowie wykazują pozytywny wpływ udziału w programie Erasmus na aktywność zawodową (zwiększona liczba zagranicznych transakcji międzybibliotecznych) i naukową (sprawozdania i artykuły, referaty podczas konferencji, seminaria) bibliotekarzy. W artykule omówiona została współpraca Biblioteki Głównej UP z instytucjami zagranicznymi w latach 2010-2016 prowadzona w ramach programu Erasmus i wypożyczeń międzybibliotecznych. Dane statystyczne ilustrują intensywność kontaktów Erasmusowych i międzybibliotecznych. Na podstawie doświadczeń pracownika Biblioteki Głównej UP uczestniczącego w inicjatywie International Librarians Network opisano również formy bibliotecznego networkingu.
The aim of the article is to draw attention to the role of contacts with foreign institutions in the process of improving services and building the image of an academic library. Experiences of the Main Library of the Pedagogical University in Cracow show a positive influence of participation in the Erasmus programme on the professional activity (increased number of foreign interlibrary transactions) and scientific studies (reports and articles, conference papers, seminars) of librarians. The article discusses the cooperation of the PU Main Library with foreign institutions in the years 2010-2016, conducted within the framework of the Erasmus programme and Interlibrary Loan. Statistical data illustrate the intensity of Erasmus and interlibrary contacts. Also, based on the experience of a Main Library employee participating in the International Librarians Network, library networking forms are described.

Zewnątrztwardówkowe operacje z zastosowaniem wszczepów nadtwardówkowych już od 70 lat stanowią skuteczną metodę leczenia otworopochodnych odwarstwień siatkówki. Obecnie, w dobie powszechnej witrektomii, zmieniły się jednak wskazania i populacja pacjentów, u których pozostają one metodą pierwszego wyboru. Wydaje się, że u młodych osób każdorazowo powinno się rozważyć operację z użyciem wszczepu nadtwardówkowego, zwłaszcza w przypadkach odwarstwień siatkówki z otworami położonymi blisko siebie oraz pourazowego oderwania siatkówki od rąbka.
Scleral buckling has been successful method of treating rhegmatogenous retinal detachment for 70 years now. In the world of ubiquitous pars plana vitrectomy what has changed was indications and selection of patients for whom scleral buckling is still the first choice procedure. It seems that in young age patients cases scleral buckling should be considered in retinal detachment with holes located in adjacent quadrants and post traumatic retinal dialysis particularly.

W opracowaniu zaprezentowano podstawowe wskaźniki obrazujące poziom nakładów na działalność B+R oraz strukturę ich finansowania w Polsce na tle krajów Unii Europejskiej. Dokonano oceny zróżnicowania poziomu oraz zmian trendów działalności B+R i innowacyjności w ujęciu województw Polski w latach 2005-2011 z wykorzystaniem wskaźników indywidualnych, a także dwóch metod taksonomicznych: metody TOPSIS i metody Warda. Otrzymane wyniki potwierdziły to, że województwo mazowieckie jest liderem we wszystkich rankingach i regionem zdecydowanie wyróżniającym się wśród pozostałych województw. Dla większości regionów Polski zaobserwowano zróżnicowanie zajmowanej pozycji w rankingu, jak również zmianę przynależności tych województw do różnych skupisk w badanych latach.
In the paper basic indicators depicting/describing the level of the expenditures on R&D activity and the structure financing them in Poland against the background of EU countries are presented. An assessment of diversifying the level and changes of trends in R&D activity and innovativeness in voivodships in Poland during the period 2005-2011 by making use of individual indicators as well as two taxonomical methods: TOPSiS and Ward’s methods has been done. Received results confirm that mazowieckie voivodship is the leader in all rankings and firmly comes the other provinces off. For the majority of regions in Poland diversifying the filled position in the ranking, as well as the change of the membership of these provinces in different clusters in examined years were observed.

The article presents the libraries of Cypriot public and private universities operating both in the Republic of Cyprus and in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus. An analysis of the websites of these institutions was carried out, with particular emphasis on offered e-services, presence in social media or the functioning of digital libraries and repositories.
W artykule przedstawione zostały biblioteki cypryjskich uczelni publicznych i prywatnych, działające zarówno w Republice Cypryjskiej, jak i w Tureckiej Republice Północnego Cypru. Przeprowadzono analizę stron internetowych tych instytucji, ze szczególnym zwróceniem uwagi na oferowane e-usługi, obecność w social mediach oraz funkcjonowanie bibliotek cyfrowych i repozytoriów.

Objectives. Recent epidemiological studies suggested an association between a poor vitamin D [25(OH)D] status, inflammatory mediators, and rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We have recently proposed that pro-inflammatory interleukin 6 (IL-6) may represent a good marker for disease activity of RA. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between serum 25(OH)D levels and disease activity, joint damage, as well as serum IL-6 levels in a Polish RA population. Materials and Methods. Serum 25(OH)D levels were measured in 35 female RA patients and 38 age- and gender-matched healthy controls. Statistical correlations between 25(OH)D levels and the disease activity score 28 (DAS 28), joint damage based on the Steinbrocker criteria, as well as serum IL-6 levels were performed. Results. There was no statistically significant difference between levels of 25(OH)D in RA (16.89±8.57 ng/ml) and healthy controls (14.12±7.51 ng/ml), and the vitamin D deficiency (<20 ng/ml) was found in 71.43% of RA patients and 73.68 % of healthy controls. While vitamin D status did not correlate with DAS 28 (r=0.265, p=0.149) and joint damage based on the Steinbrocker criteria (r=0.367, p=0.065), a positive correlation between 25(OH)D and IL-6 (r=0.537, p=0.002) was observed in RA. Conclusion. Although further studies on a larger group of patients will be needed to confirm the data presented here, it seems that hypovitaminosis D is common in the RA patients and middle-aged non-RA healthy women in the Polish population. 25(OH)D levels were similar in the RA patients and age- and gender-matched healthy controls, and were not associated with joint damage and disease activity in patients.

ObjectivesThe aim of the study was to evaluate the effects of repeated Finnish sauna baths on the concentrations of nitric oxide metabolites (NOx) and 3-nitrotyrosine in relation to pro-oxidative and antioxidative status in young males with different physical activity levels.Material and MethodsThe study was performed on healthy males (aged 20–25 years), representing the training (T, N = 10) and non-training groups (NT, N = 10). The protocol included a series of 10 sauna baths during 3 weeks. One bath consisted of three 15-min sessions, with 2 min recovery. Before the first and the 10th treatment, measurements of body composition, blood pressure, rectal temperature, and plasma concentrations of the total pro-oxidative and antioxidative status, 3-nitrotyrosine and NOx were performed.ResultsA significant increase in physiological parameters during sauna treatments, as well as a significant decrease in the total antioxidative status before the 10th bath, were observed in both groups. The series of sauna baths caused a significant increase in the total antioxidative status in the T group, and a decrease in the total oxidative status in the NT group. A significant decrease in 3-nitrotyrosine in both groups before the last treatment, and also in the T group after the last treatment, was noted. In both groups, a significant increase in NOx concentrations was observed after the first bath.ConclusionsA series of sauna baths contributes to the improvement in the prooxidative/antioxidative balance. The increased production of nitric oxide may lead to a better vascular relaxation and blood flow.

Over the last few years a growing interest in Arab countries as shown in social media can be observed. Social media are not only used to exchange information but also to express opinions, which has increased particularly after Arab Spring in 2011. This article presents some examples of social networking services in selected libraries (mainly in academic libraries) in Egypt, Saudi Arabia and other countries in this region. Among librarians Facebook, Twitter or YouTube are particularly popular, librarian blogs are also created. Web 2.0 applications are used to communicate with the reader and to carry out trainings but Library 2.0 model is not yet popular in Arab libraries.
Ostatnie lata cechują się wzrostem zainteresowania mediami społecznościowymi w krajach arabskich. Social media służą nie tylko do wymiany informacji, ale także do wyrażania swoich opinii, co szczególnie nasiliło się po wydarzeniach Arabskiej Wiosny w 2011 r. W artykule przedstawiono przykłady wykorzystania serwisów społecznościowych w wybranych bibliotekach (głównie uniwersyteckich) w Egipcie, Arabii Saudyjskiej i innych krajach regionu. Szczególną popularnością wśród bibliotekarzy cieszą się: Facebook, Twitter czy YouTube, tworzy się też blogi bibliotekarskie. Aplikacje Web 2.0 wykorzystywane są do komunikacji z czytelnikiem i przeprowadzania szkoleń, ale model Biblioteki 2.0 nie jest jednak jeszcze zbyt popularny w bibliotekach arabskich.

This article is a continuation of the authors’ study on the ways to ensure safety in the Air Traffic Management (ATM) system. It directly refers to the processes of risk management involving, in particular, risk management in (air) transport. The mai aim of this paper is to present and indicate the hazard identification and risk assessment tools that can be used in air transport and to apply one of them for a risk analysis of a specific ATM originating case. This is why, after a short introduction, describing the background of the research as well as literature review, the risk management process as such is characterized. It is shown in a schematic way and its main components are identified. At the same time, from the entire management process, the risk assessment procedure is highlighted as its most crucial part. Then, general hazards identification techniques, risk analysis and assessment tools are described, with an indication that they can also be implemented in air transport, if compatible with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs). In the following part, the process of risk assessment in air transport, based on the Safety Management Manual, using a safety risk tolerability matrix, is characterized. Finally, in this article, an exemplary risk analysis is carried out, focusing on a selected case arising from the ATM field. For the analysed case, safety risk hazards and their possible effects are identified and then assigned to the Intolerable, Tolerable and Acceptable regions. The entire paper is summarized and conclusions are drawn in relation to the publication’s main goal. Attention is also paid to the potential causes of appearance of hazards including, first of all, lack of adequate verification procedures, as well as people’s competence and last but not the least human errors, being the reason for 70-80% of unwanted transport accidents.

The paper describe the bahavior of the eletrical circuit (RC) containing the supercapacitor were used the fractional derivatives of Caputo definiton and Conformable Fractional Derivative definition. Verification of the correctness of the suggested electrical circuit models was carried out a series of measurements of the system response to the given control signal. The measurement data were compared by fractionalorder derivatives: classical case, Caputo definition and CFD definition. Conducting a series of experiments with charging a supercapacitor in an RC circuit, constant control voltage from 2 V to 5 V with an exchanged external resistor, it was shown that none of the three mathematical models reflects the real behavior of the supercapacitor. It has been shown that the behavior of supercapacitor requires the use of different mathematical than fractional derivatives.
