Opis:
Sediment cores collected in several areas of the southern Baltic were analysed for total mercury (HgTOT) and five operationally defined mercury fractions: HgA – contained in pore waters, HgF – bound to fulvic acids, HgH – bound to humic acids, HgS – bound to sulphide, and HgR – residual. An effort was made to quantify mercury fluxes at the sediment/water interface in the study area. Net mercury input, calculated on the basis of sedimentation rate and concentration in the uppermost sediments, ranged from 1 to 5.5 ng cm−2 year−1. Mercury remobilisation from sediments due to diffusion and resuspension was calculated from the proportion of labile mercury and the velocity of near-bottom currents. The results showed that the return soluble and particulate fluxes of mercury from the sediments to the water column constitute a substantial proportion of the input (20–50%), and are slightly higher than those found in pristine areas, although they are less than the values recorded in areas with a history of mercury contamination. In addition, an index was developed to assess the methylation potential of mercury in sediments. Mercury contained in pore waters, and mercury bound to fulvic and humic acids together with Loss on Ignition were used to calculate the semiquantitative methylation potential (Pm). Despite the simplicity of this approach, Pm correlates well with methyl mercury in fish from the study area.

Jeden z nich umieszczono z przodu pojazdu. Przekazuje on moment obrotowy na koła osi przedniej poprzez zespolony układ napędowy. Drugi silnik, usytuowany z tyłu pojazdu, w identyczny sposób przekazuje moment napędowy na koła osi tylnej. Samochód nazwany Duomoto powstał na bazie dwóch Volkswagenów Golfów GT. Poddano go badaniom drogowym. Wyniki badań oraz wnioski zamieszczono w niniejszym artykule.
The sports car, powered by two engines, designed and built by a team of four graduates of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering at the Gdańsk University of Technology is prezented. One (engine) of them was placed at the front of the vehicle. It transmits the torque to the wheels of the front axle through a combined system. The second engine, located at the rear of the vehicle, in the same way transmits the drive torque to the wheels of the rear axle. The car named Duomoto was built on the basis of two Volkswagen Golf GT. It was subjected to road tests. The test results and conclusions are included in this article.

Opis:
Próbki do analiz wykonywano według standardowych procedur. Do obróbki danych liczbowych wykorzystywano program POLPAL. Otrzymane wyniki palinologiczne umożliwiły odtworzenie historii roślinności badanego terenu począwszy od okresu borealnego, a analiza szczątków Cladocera dostarczyła informacji o fazach rozwoju części zbiornika jeziornego Obrowo Duże.
In order to reconstruct the environmental history of the Jasień Lake trough, pollen analysis and an analysis of Cladocera remains have been simultaneously carried out. Sediments for pollen research have been collected in the bay section of the Jasień Lake and in the Obrowo Małe peat bog. Cladocera remains have been sampled in two sites within a peat bog adjacent to the Obrowe Duże Lake. Preparation of samples for both analyses followed standard procedures. Numerical data have been elaborated using the POLPAL software. The results of the palynological study have allowed to decipher vegetation history since the Boreal period. The peat bog of Obrowo Małe began to form at the onset of the Atlantic period. Cladocera remains yielded information about phases of water body evolution in the part of the Obrowo Duże Lake, which subject to silting transformed into a low-level valley bog, and then into a transitional peat bog. Pollen and Cladocera analyses have been carried out on material collected at dissimilar sites, which practically excludes the possibility of correlation of results and allowed one only to reconstruct the major hydrological changes, common for the entire region. In the latest Holocene, in the Jasień Lake trough a trend towards water level decrease is observed due to both climatic and human impact. Further changes included the rise of trophic level in the lake and vegetation succession onto the shallower parts of the lake.

Opis:
In this paper results of optical emission spectroscopic study of microwave 915 MHz plasma in atmospheric pressure nitrogen with an addition of ethanol vapour are presented. The plasma was generated in waveguide-supplied cylinder-type nozzleless microwave plasma source. The aim of research was to determine the rotational $T_{rot}$ and vibrational $T_{vib}$ temperatures of CN and $C_2$. A method called bubbling was employed to introduce alcohol (ethanol) into the plasma. The $T_{rot}$ and $T_{vib}$ were determined by comparing the measured and simulated spectra. Obtained rotational and vibrational temperatures of CN and $C_2$ were ranged from 4400 to 5400 K and from 2800 to 3400 K, respectively, depending on the location in the plasma and the microwave absorbed power $P_{A}$.

Opis:
The hydrogen production by conversion of liquid compounds containing hydrogen was investigated experimentally. The waveguide-supplied metal cylinder-based microwave plasma source (MPS) operated at frequency of 915 MHz at atmospheric pressure was used. The decomposition of ethanol, isopropanol and kerosene was performed employing plasma dry reforming process. The liquid was introduced into the plasma in the form of vapour. The amount of vapour ranged from 0.4 to 2.4 kg/h. Carbon dioxide with the fl ow rate ranged from 1200 to 2700 NL/h was used as a working gas. The absorbed microwave power was up to 6 kW. The effect of absorbed microwave power, liquid composition, liquid fl ow rate and working gas fl ow rate was analysed. All these parameters have a clear infl uence on the hydrogen production effi ciency, which was described with such parameters as the hydrogen production rate [NL(H2)/h] and the energy yield of hydrogen production [NL(H2)/kWh]. The best achieved experimental results showed that the hydrogen production rate was up to 1116 NL(H2)/h and the energy yield was 223 NL(H2) per kWh of absorbed microwave energy. The results were obtained in the case of isopropanol dry reforming. The presented catalyst-free microwave plasma method can be adapted for hydrogen production not only from ethanol, isopropanol and kerosene, but also from different other liquid compounds containing hydrogen, like gasoline, heavy oils and biofuels.

Opis:
The Vistula Lagoon is situated along the south-eastern shore of the Gulf of Gdańsk and is linked with the gulf through the Strait of Baltiysk. Separated from the open sea by the Vistula Spit, the Vistula Lagoon is a shallow body of water with a mean depth of 3 m; the bottom is covered with a layer of mud several metres thick. This article presents a unique, newly discovered locality of tree stumps occurring in situ at the bottom of the Vistula Lagoon. The radiocarbon age of the alder stumps and the top of the peat in which they are rooted is Subboreal. The alder wood was dated to 4770±35 and 3295±35 years BP. The top layers of peat were dated to 4670±40, 4410±35 and 3690±35 years BP. The considerable scatter of the dates indicates the significance of erosional processes during marine transgressions. Radiocarbon dates and pollen analyses indicate that in the late Atlantic – early Subboreal periods, the water level of the Vistula Lagoon was about 3 m lower than it is today. The −2 m level was passed no earlier than c. 3500 years ago; the −1 m level was reached around 2000 years ago.
