In an in situ experiment we evaluated the growth of the red algae Furcellaria lumbricalis and Coccotylus truncatus in the Archipelago Sea. The results showed that the growth rates of both species were similar but that growth decreased with increasing algal coverage. The effects were more pronounced for C. truncatus than for F. lumbricalis. Economic analyses aiming to establish sustainable harvesting limits for F. lumbricalis in the study area should take account of the density dependent growth of these red algae.

Opis:
Georges Cuvier (1798) established the classical concept of Edentata which included sloths, anteaters, armadillos, aardvarks, and pangolins. With the growing body of comparative morphological data becoming available during the nineteenth century, it was evident that Cuvier's “Edentata” was an artificial group (e.g., Huxley 1872). In his classical textbook, Weber (1904) excluded aardvarks and pangolins from the Edentata and put them in separate orders, Tubulidentata and Pholidota. Later on, fossil taxa were repeatedly added to and removed from Edentata, such as various xenarthran groups, taeniodonts, palaeanodonts, and gondwanatheres, but the South American Xenarthra always was considered as their core group. Even the living order Pholidota has been cited again as ?Edentata incertae sedis many years after Weber’s work (Romer 1966). The validity and extent of a higher taxon Edentata are still in dispute. In this discussion, the Middle Eocene pholidotan Eomanis and the putative xenarthran Eurotamandua from Grube Messel near Darmstadt (Germany) play an important role (Storch 1978, 1981, 2003; Rose and Emry 1993; Gaudin and Branham 1998; Rose 1999). Eomanis krebsi and Eurotamandua joresi have been subject to some discussion regarding their taxonomic distinction. It has been suggested that the only specimen known of Eo. krebsi might actually be a juvenile representative of the senior species E. joresi. A reexamination of the type specimen of Eo. krebsi has yielded some new observations regarding the identity of some of its ankle elements. An element that was previously identified as a navicular, is here reidentified as a partial distal tibia, whereas a partially exposed calcaneus had gone unnoticed. These two elements display several differences in morphology between Eo. krebsi and E. joresi, indicating that these are in fact distinct species.

We consider optimal control problems for gas flow in pipeline networks. The equations of motion are taken to be represented by a first-order system of hyperbolic semilinear equations derived from the fully nonlinear isothermal Euler gas equations. We formulate an optimal control problem on a network and introduce a tailored time discretization thereof. In order to further reduce the complexity, we consider an instantaneous control strategy. The main part of the paper is concerned with a nonoverlapping domain decomposition of the optimal control problem on the graph into local problems on smaller sub-graphs—ultimately on single edges. We prove convergence of the domain decomposition method on networks and study the wellposedness of the corresponding time-discrete optimal control problems. The point of the paper is that we establish virtual control problems on the decomposed subgraphs such that the corresponding optimality systems are in fact equal to the systems obtained via the domain decomposition of the entire optimality system.

Opis:
Network modularity is a well-studied large-scale connectivity pattern in networks. The detection of modules in real networks constitutes a crucial step towards a description of the network building blocks and their evolutionary dynamics. The performance of modularity detection algorithms is commonly quantified using simulated networks data. However, a comparison of the modularity algorithms utility for real biological data is scarce. Here we investigate the utility of network modularity algorithms for the classification of ecological plant communities. Plant community classification by the traditional approaches requires prior knowledge about the characteristic and differential species, which are derived from a manual inspection of vegetation tables. Using the raw species abundance data we constructed six different networks that vary in their edge definitions. Four network modularity algorithms were examined for their ability to detect the traditionally recognized plant communities. The use of more restrictive edge definitions significantly increased the accuracy of community detection, that is, the correspondence between network-based and traditional community classification. Random-walk based modularity methods yielded slightly better results than approaches based on the modularity function. For the whole network, the average agreement between the manual classification and the network-based modules is 76% with varying congruence levels for different communities ranging between 11% and 100%. The network-based approach recovered the known ecological gradient from riverside – sand and gravel bank vegetation – to dryer habitats like semidry grassland on dykes. Our results show that networks modularity algorithms offer new avenues of pursuit for the computational analysis of species communities.

Opis:
The SNIF-NMR method (site-specific natural isotope fractionation studied by Nuclear Magnetic Resonance) was used to examine the isotopic profile of glucoses derived from plants with different photosynthetic pathways. It is shown that the type of photosynthetic metabolism, either C3 (beet-root, orange, grape), C4 (maize, sugar-cane) or CAM (pineapple), exerts a strong influence on the deuterium distribution in the sugar molecules. The isotopic profile also depends, secondarily, on the physiological status of the precursor plant. Consequently, the isotopic fingerprint of glucose may be a rich source of information in mechanistic comparisons of metabolic pathways. Moreover, from an analytical point of view, it may provide complementary criteria with respect to the ethanol probe for origin inference of sugars.

CONTRIBUTION OF EXAFS-LIKE TECHNIQUES TO THE DETERMINATION OF LOCAL ORDER: APPLICATION TO TRIBOLOGY: The determination of local order at atomic scale becomes more and more fundamental for understanding superficial phenomena such as tribology and catalysis. Among a few techniques available in this field, we are only concerned with the EXAFS-like ones (EXAFS, SEXAFS, EXELFS, SEELFS, etc.). The difficulties appearing all along the numerical treatment of such spectra are carefully analysed and a methodology is proposed in view to obtain reliable radial distribution functions. Some applications of these techniques are presented in two fields connected with tribology: friction induced amorphisation in high vacuum and characterization of interfacial solid bodies created during a wear process including an antiwear additive.

X-band electron magnetic resonance measurements of polycrystalline CaMn$\text{}_{1-x,y}$M$\text{}_{x,y}$O$\text{}_{3}$ (M = Ru, 0≤x≤0.5; M = Mo, 0≤y≤0.14) samples were performed at 120 K≤ T≤540 K. The observed anomalies of electron magnetic resonance parameters correlate pretty well with the temperatures of antiferro-, ferromagnetic-like, and orbital/charge-ordering transitions in these systems and specify phase diagrams obtained by other techniques. However, a strong difference between resonant properties of Ru- and Mo-doped series is observed in both paramagnetic and magnetically ordered states. To describe such a difference, the energy bands diagrams, which comprise the deep impurity t$\text{}_{2g}$-like states + e$\text{}_{g}$-like conductive band for CaMn$\text{}_{1-x}$Ru$\text{}_{x}$O$\text{}_{3}$ and shallow impurity states + conductive band, both having e$\text{}_{g}$-like symmetry, for CaMn$\text{}_{1-y}$Mo$\text{}_{y}$O$\text{}_{3}$, are proposed. Specific electrons' contribution to the electron magnetic resonance line width explains concentration and temperature dependences of this parameter in the paramagnetic state in considered systems.

Fieldwork in the early Late Jurassic (Oxfordian) Qigu Formation of the Junggar Basin in Northwest China (Xinjiang Autonomous Region) produced teeth and mandibular fragments of a new docodont. The new taxon has a large “pseudotalonid” on the lower molars, and by retention of crest b−g exhibits closer affinities to Simpsonodon and Krusatodon from the Middle Jurassic of Europe than to the other known Asian docodonts Tashkumyrodon, Tegotherium, and Sibirotherium. It differs from the Haldanodon–Docodon−lineage by the “pseudotalonid” and large cusps b and g. A PAUP analysis based on lower molar characters produced a single most parsimonious tree with two main clades. One clade comprises Docodon, Haldanodon, and Borealestes, and the other Dsungarodon, Simpsonodon, and Krusatodon plus the Asian tegotheriids. Analysis of the molar occlusal relationships using epoxy casts mounted on a micromanipulator revealed a four−phase chewing cycle with transverse component. The molars of the new docodont exhibit a well developed grinding function besides cutting and shearing, probably indicating an omnivorous or even herbivorous diet. A grinding and crushing function is also present in the molars of Simpsonodon, Krusatodon, and the Asian tegotheriids, whereas Borealestes, Haldanodon, and Docodon retain the plesiomorphic molar pattern with mainly piercing and cutting function.

We investigated the short-term effects of spent coffee grounds on the physical properties of two Mediterranean agricultural soils (Calcisol and Luvisol). The in vitro assay was performed with two spent coffee grounds doses (60 and 240 Mg ha-1), two incubation times (30 and 60 days) and two modalities: with and without lettuce seedlings (Lactuca sativa var. longifolia). Spent coffee grounds addition increased water retention at -33 and -1500 kPa, and decreased bulk density and plant-available water content. With spent coffee grounds, the percentage of macroaggregates increased, the percentage of meso- and microaggregates decreased and the structural stability of all types of aggregates increased. The stereomicroscopy images showed that: the structural aggregates were rounded, the porosity increased by 316%, the structure was ordered into smaller aggregates, the incorporation of spent coffee grounds particles could occur in intraped cracks and spent coffee grounds particles could act as a binding agent. Scanning electron microscopy also showed that spent coffee grounds particles interacted with mineral particles and integrated into soil structure; moreover, fungal hyphae also developed on many spent coffee grounds particles. If spent coffee grounds effects are compared with those described in the literature for other organic amendments, the same trend was observed in most of the soil physical properties although with a different intensity, principally with regard to structural stability.
