Introduction and objectives. The aim of the study was to asses the impact of long-term therapy with the second generation antiepileptic drug levetiracetam (LEV) with arachidonyl-2’-chloroethylamide (ACEA), a highly selective cannabinoid CB1 receptor agoniston the process of neurogenesis in a mouse pilocarpine model of epilepsy (PILO). Additionally, a relationship was established between the treatment with ACEA in combination with LEV, and hippocampal neurogenesis in mouse PILO brain. Materials and method. All experiments were performed on adolescent male CB57/BL mice injected i.p. with LEV (10 mg/kg), ACEA (10 mg/kg) and PMSF (30 mg/kg) (phenylmethylsulfonyl fluoride — a substance protecting ACEA against degradation by the fatty-acid amidohydrolase), pilocarpine (PILO, a single dose 290 mg/kg) and methylscopolamine (30 min before PILO to stop the peripheral cholinergic effects of the pilocarpine, 1 mg/kg). The process of neurogenesis was evaluated after10 days treatment with LEV and ACEA. Results. Obtained results indicated that the combinations of ACEA+PMSF+LEV and ACEA +PMSF increased the total number of total newborn cells compared to the control. Moreover, ACEA+PMSF administered alone and in combination with LEV had a significant impact on neurogenesis increasing the total number of newborn neurons compared to the control group. Neither LEV nor PMSF had a significant impact on the number of proliferating cells and newborn neurons when compared to the control PILO group. In turn, LEV administered alone decreased significantly the number of astrocytes. However, ACEA+PMSF has demonstrated significant increase of astrocytes compare to control mice. Conclusions. These data provide substantial evidence that the combination of LEV+ACEA significantly increases the level of newborn neurons in the PILO dentate subgranular zone.

As a result of economic crisis in 2009 a series of measures to prevent its effects was recorded. Among such measures was a number of trainings which names suggested their anti-crisis nature. Therefore, the authors conducted a study involving the analysis of available job posts. The article presents the current situation on the market of the anti-crisis room trainings and the analysis of the changes that took place within the scope of the last year.
Na skutek kryzysu ekonomicznego, w roku 2009 odnotowany został szereg działań mających na celu zapobieganie jego skutkom. Wśród takich działań znalazły się liczne szkolenia, których nazwy sugerowały ich antykryzysowy charakter. W związku z tym autorzy przeprowadzili badania polegające na analizie dostępnych ofert. W niniejszym artykule przedstawiona została obecna sytuacja na rynku ofert szkoleń w zakresie szkoleń antykryzysowych oraz analiza zmian, jakie zaszły w tym obszarze na przestrzeni ostatniego roku.

Artykuł prezentuje wciąż mało rozpoznaną w Polsce problematykę związaną z monitorowaniem własnego zdrowia przy pomocy aplikacji i urządzeń do self-trackingu. Na podstawie dokonanego narracyjnego przeglądu literatury zidentyfikowane zostały liczne zarówno pozytywne, jak i negatywne konsekwencje samodzielnego dokonywania przez ludzi rozmaitych pomiarów związanych ze zdrowiem. Pokazano, że rozwój technologii ma wpływ na zmianę rozumienia terminu „opieka zdrowotna”, które musi wziąć pod uwagę to, że pacjenci dzięki dokonywanym pomiarom stają się ekspertami swojego organizmu. Artykuł omawia także pojęcie „kultury self-tracking”, wskazując, że jej aktorami są już nie tylko członkowie ruchu społecznego Quantified Self, ale również lekarze, instytucje opieki zdrowotnej, a nawet niektórzy pracodawcy. Wprowadzone zostaje rozróżnienie na self-tracking dokonywany „z własnych chęci” oraz „odgórnie zalecony”. Przestawione zostały także socjologiczne interpretacje zjawiska self-tracking. W zakończeniu pokazano potencjalne obszary badań socjologicznych dotyczące tego zjawiska.
The article presents the issue, which is still little-known in Poland, and relates to monitoring one’s health using self-tracking applications and devices. Based on the narrative literature review, numerous positive and negative consequences of self-monitoring of health have been identified. It has been shown that the development of technology has had an impact on changing the understanding of the term “healthcare”, which now must take into account the fact that patients become experts of their bodies as they can measure different aspects of it. The article also discusses the concept of “self-tracking culture”, indicating that its actors are not only members of the Quantified Self social movement, but also doctors, health care institutions and even some employers. In the article the distinction between “voluntary” and “recommended” self-tracking is made. The sociological interpretations of the phenomenon of self-tracking were also presented. Finally, potential areas of sociological research concerning this phenomenon are shown.

In the paper we present the results of two teaching episodes, which took place in two middle school classes with 13- and 14-year-old students. The students in both classes were asked to solve the same geometrical problem; then a discussion followed, in which they had to justify their solutions. In both cases the students had no prior experience in solving non-typical mathematical problems. Additionally, the students were asked to justify their answers, which is not a common characteristic of a ‘typical’ mathematics classroom at that level. The problem was chosen from a wider study, in which twenty classes from twenty different schools were analysed. One of the aims of the present study was to analyse the skills that require a deeper understanding of mathematical concepts and properties. Particularly, we aimed to investigate students’ different solution methods and justifications during problem solving. The results show considerable differences among the two classes, not only concerning the depth of investigating (which was expected due to the different age groups), but also concerning the relationship between achievement (as assessed by the mathematics teacher) and success in solving the problem. These results demonstrate the need for re-directing mathematics education from a pure algorithmic to a deeper thinking approach.

The aim of the study was to recognize the early diagenetic transformations of clay minerals likely taking place in the brackish environment of Gdańsk Bay (Baltic Sea). The Vistula River loads and sediments of the Vistula delta front and prodelta were studied. The mineral compositions of the clay fractions were determined by X-ray diffractometry. The average layer charge (LC) of the expandable interlayers was determined using the O-D vibrational spectroscopy method. The major element content of the studied clays was determined by inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. The <0.2 μm clay fraction, separated from the river sediments, contained illite-smectite mixed layered minerals, rich in high-charge, dioctahedral smectite (Ilt-Sme), illite, and kaolinite. The same clay fraction, separated from the delta-front sediments, was also composed mainly of Ilt-Sme, illite, kaolinite, and hydroxy-interlayered minerals. The <0.2 μm clay fraction from the prodelta sediments was depleted in Ilt-Sme and enriched in illite and chlorite, relative to the clays from both the river and the delta-front sediments. The LCs (0.45 to 0.56 per formula unit) were higher for clays from the river and the delta front sediments, relative to the clays from the prodelta. The <0.2 μm clay fractions from the prodelta sediments were enriched in MgO, Fe2O3, and K2O, relative to the fine clay fraction from the river. The results indicated that the smectite component of Ilt-Sme, deposited by the Vistula in Gdańsk Bay, underwent chloritization and likely illitization. The chloritization most likely proceeded via formation of hydroxy-interlayers within the smectite. Illite-like minerals, formed at the expense of the smectite with high LC, due to selective adsorption and fixation of K+ from seawater.

Opis:
Neurogenesis is one of the most important phenomenona affecting human life. This process consists of proliferation, migration and differentiation of neuroblasts and synaptic integrations of newborn neurons. Proliferation of new cells continues into old age, also in humans, although the most extensive process of cell formation occurs during the prenatal period. It is possible to distinguish two regions in the brain responsible for neurogenesis: the dentate gyrus (DG) of the hippocampus and the sub-ventricular zone (SVZ). Hippocampal neurogenesis is very sensitive to various physiological and pathological stimuli. The functional integration of the newly-born dentate granule cells into hippocampal circuitry, and their ability to mediate long-term potentiation in DG, has led to the hypothesis that neurogenesis in the adult brain may play a key role in learning and memory function, as well as cognitive dysfunction in some diseases. Brain disorders, such as neurodegenerative diseases or traumatic brain injuries, significantly affect migration, proliferation and differentiation of neural cells. In searching for the best neurological drugs protecting neuronal cells, stimulating neurogenesis, while also developing no side-effects, endocannabinoids proved to be a strong group of substances having many beneficial properties. Therefore, the latest data is reviewed of the various experimental studies concerning the analysis of the most commonly studied cannabinoids and their impact on neurogenesis.
