Opis:
Recently, several attempts have been undertaken to correlate in vitro calibration curves with observed frequencies of chromosomal aberrations and micronuclei in lymphocytes of patients undergoing radiotherapy. The aim of such correlations is the search for a biological method to reconstruct the dose received during radiotherapy. While the in vitro dose-response curves are linear-quadratic, the observed in vivo relationship is usually linear and there is some controversy as to the nature of the observed linearity. We have, therefore, constructed a model to calculate the frequencies and distributions of chromosomal aberrations in lymphocytes of patients undergoing conventional radiotherapy. The model assumes that each fraction of radiation induces a certain number of Poisson-distributed aberrations in the irradiated blood volume. In addition, a simplified assumption is made that lymphocytes flow freely inside the body of the patient and no elimination of cells occurs. The model yields linear dose response curves. The steepness of the curves increases with increasing size of irradiated block of tissue (referred to as irradiated volume) and increasing dose per fraction. The distributions of aberrations become increasingly overdispersed with increasing dose per fraction but are independent of the number of radiation fractions. The modelled dose-response curves agree well with the majority of published experimental results. Given the simple assumptions made, this indicates that cell elimination, which occurs during radiotherapy does not bias the results obtained experimentally. The linearity of the dose response-curve results from the fractionated irradiation. Hence, great care should be applied when attempting to use standard, linear-quadratic calibration curves to estimate the doses received by patients during radiotherapy.

Opis:
Background. Premature mortality in younger age groups influences the society as far as social and economic aspects are concerned. Therefore, it is important to come up with a tool which will allow to assess them, and will enable to implement only these health care measures that bring tangible benefits. That is the reason for introducing PYLL rate (PYLL - potential years of life lost), which is an addition to the analysis of premature mortality as it includes the number of deaths due to a particular cause and the age at death. Objective. The purpose of this study was to analyse the level and trends of PYLL rate according to death causes in years 2002 -2010in Świętokrzyskie Province. Material and methods. The material for the analysis was the information from the Central Statistical Office on the number of deaths due to all causes registered among the inhabitants of Świętokrzyskie Province in years 2002-2010. Causes of death were coded according to the 10th revision of the International Classification of Diseases. The analysis of premature mortality was carried out with the use of PYLL rate. PYLL rate was calculated according to the method proposed by Romeder, according to which the premature mortality was defined as death before the age of 70. The analysis of time trends of PYLL rate and the APC (annual percent change) of the PYLL rate were calculated usingjointpoint model as well as the Jointpoint Regression Program (Version 4.0.1 - January 2013). Results. In men, in years 2002 - 2007 PYLL rate increased by 1.5% per year (p<0.05). From year 2007 the trend went downward and PYLL rate decreased on average by 3.1% per year till year 2010. External causes of death, cardiovascular diseases and cancers in years 2002 - 2010 were the reason for almost 74.0% PYLL in men. In year 2010 PYLL rate due to all death causes amounted to 89 13.8/105 and was three times higher than in women (29 75.5/105). In women, however, during the analysed period PYLL rate did not change significantly, and was dominated by cancers, cardiovascular diseases and external death causes. Similarly to men, those three groups of death causes were responsible for an average 76.0% PYLL. Conclusions. The analysis of the causes of premature mortality in Świętokrzyskie Province shows that in the majority of cases it is due to preventable deaths, which calls for the necessity of more intensive measures in primary and secondary prevention as well as the improvement in treatment standards, mainly of cardiovascular diseases, cancers, injuries and accidents.
Wprowadzenie. Dlatego wprowadzono wskaźnik PYLL (Potential "Years of Life Lost), który jest uzupełnieniem analizy umieralności przedwczesnej, gdyż uwzględnia liczbę zgonów z powodu określonej przyczyny oraz wiek, w którym nastąpił zgon. Cel. Celem badań była analiza poziomu oraz trendów współczynnika potencjalnych utraconych lat życia (PYLL) według przyczyn w województwie świętokrzyskim w latach 2002-2010. Materiał i metody. Materiał stanowiły publikowane informacje Głównego Urzędu Statystycznego o liczbie zgonów z powodu ogółu przyczyn zarejestrowanych wśród mieszkańców województwa świętokrzyskiego w latach 2002-2010. Przyczyny zgonów były kodowane zgodnie z X Rewizją Międzynarodowej Klasyfikacji Chorób i Problemów Zdrowotnych. Analizę umieralności przedwczesnej przeprowadzono z wykorzystaniem wskaźnika potencjalnych utraconych lata życia (PYLL - Potential Years of Life Lost). Liczbę potencjalnych utraconych lat życia obliczono z zastosowaniem metodologii zaproponowanej przez Romedera. Za umieralność przedwczesną przyjęto zgon przed 70 rokiem życia. Analizy trendów czasowych współczynnika PYLL oraz wartości średniej rocznej zmiany (APC - annual percent change) współczynnika PYLL obliczono za pomocą modeli joinpoint i programu Joinpoint Regression Program (Version 4.0.1- January 2013). Wyniki.

Opis:
Introduction and objectives. For years, the increase in cancer incidence and deaths has constituted a significant health and social problem. Variation in the burden in cancers in different regions of the world requires constant monitoring of the epidemiological situation in this regard. Assessing survival in cancer patients is a valuable source of information for patients and physicians alike, as well as for politicians who have a direct impact on the shaping of health policy and health systems. The aim of the present study was to assess the changes in the 5-year relative survival of colorectal cancer patients during 1995–2014. Materials and method. The data of 8,970 patients with colorectal cancer in the years 1995–2014, 5,033 males and 3,937 females aged 67.5 ± 11.7 from Świętokrzyskie Cancer Registry were used. Cases were classified according to the topographical codes ICD-O-3: C18.0-C18.9, C19.9, C20.9, C21.0-C21.2, C21.8. The end of follow-up was fixed at 31 December 2014. Four five-year calendar periods were defined. In each calendar period, relative survival rates using the Ederer II method were estimated separately for males and females. Results. In 2010–2014 (against 1995–1999), the absolute increase in the 5-year relative survival in males and females with colon cancer was the highest and reached 9.8 percentage point (p.p.) and 9.6 p.p., respectively. Patterns of survival for both colon and rectal cancer patients according to gender and age were very similar. Conclusions. In 1995–2014, an increase in the value of relative survival rates of males and females with colorectal cancer was observed. Systematic increase in funding in health care was a chance for reducing the burden of colorectal cancer by more widespread and equal access of effective early detection and cancer treatment.

Opis:
X-ray reflectometry and spectroscopic ellipsometry methods were applied for determination of physical properties of gold nonolayers. The nanolayers were prepared by sputtering of gold on different substrates: borosilicate glass, polished crystalline quartz and crystalline silicon. With X-ray reflectometry technique roughness of the substrates and density, thickness and roughness of gold layers were determined. The results showed decrease in density of the gold layers due to their nanometer thickness and that roughness of the underlayer affects roughness of the gold layer. In addition, thicknesses of the gold layers measured with spectroscopic ellipsometry turned out to be in agreement, within the experimental uncertainty, with results of the X-ray reflectometry method.

Opis:
Introduction and objective. According to the cancer epidemiology databases, cancer is the second leading cause of death in developing countries. Moreover, the WHO predicts a continuing increase in the incidence of cancer, extending this trend well into the next several decades. Hence, it seems obvious that the prediction of cancer susceptibility and early diagnosis is an important goal for modern biomedical sciences. The aim of this study is to clarify the value of chromosomal damage, capacity for the repair of double-strand breaks (DSBs), polymorphisms in DNA repair genes, and apoptosis as prognostic markers for prostate and cervical cancer. Materials and methods. 30 prostate cancer patients and 30 cervical cancer patients were enrolled into the study. In addition, 30 healthy female donors and 30 healthy male donors served as controls. The following endpoints were investigated: frequency of micronuclei, gamma-H2AX fluorescence, XRCC1 194C>T, XRCC1 399G>A, XRCC3 IVS5–14 A>G, OGG1 326 Ser>Cys polymorphisms and apoptosis. Results. Among all tested factors, only the homozygous variant (Arg/Arg) in XRCC1 (399 Arg/Gln) was strongly associated with prostate cancer risk, and only a low apoptotic response was connected with cervical cancer risk. The presented study confirmed a positive association between the frequency of MN and increased prostate and cervical cancer risk. However, such a biomarker is not cancer specific. In addition, the information gained by analyzing the gamma-H2AX fluorescence, as well apoptosis, had no value for predicting the risk of prostate and cervical cancers. Conclusions. The final conclusion of the study is that cancer susceptibility is a complex phenotype not readily detectable in relatively small studies by functional assays or analysis of SNP in few, selected genes.

In this paper a concept of symmetry in the parameter space of the parameter dependent Hamiltonians is considered. The three different ways of realization of this symmetry is introduced. The example of analysis of this kind of symmetries is made in case of spherical harmonic oscillator. Some consequences of this symmetry for the electric type transition amplitudes of the electromagnetic nuclear radiation is shown.
