Opis:
Vincenzo Consolo, in one of his interviews, said that painting is counterbalance to style in his artistic work. In fact, the fine art is a frequent motif appearing in his works. The novel titled L’olivo e l’olivastro is a great example of this kind of narration since one of the chapters depicts Caravaggio’s stay in Siracusa, as well as the consequences of this fruitful visit. Taking into account the way an olive and a wild olive sprout from the same trunk, so as to be the symbol of everything that is cultivated and what is wild, it should be noted that in the same way the heroes in Caravaggio’s paintings have the features that characterize both human beings and animals. This split is present constantly in artistic work of Caravaggio who broke the cardinal rules set out in painting. As a result, he was called both a scandalmonger and the author of the first painting transgression, as well as a highly provocative artist. Vincenzo Consolo’s prose is thought-provoking and encourages reflection on relativity of goodness and beauty in the real world which is depicted as disappointing. Key words: Painting, escape, transgression, exaggeration, relativity.

Opis:
The interpretation of Vincenzo Consolo’s novels cannot be complete without taking into account the field of culture from which the writer derives his inspiration. The Sicilian writers’ heritage, e.g. Verga’s, Pirandello’s, Sciascia’s, can be found in almost each of Consolo’s narrations. In the sphere of references to epigones of Italian literature as well as of other contemporary literatures, Nottetempo, casa per casa is a clear example of intertextuality that includes elements of pastiche and parody. This interdependence is illustrated by means of more or less literal quotations and citations. Such a narration, interlaced with citations from D’Annunzio, Verga, Ariosto, Manzoni, Montale, and Shakespeare as well as the Bible, is only seemingly anachronistic. In fact, it evokes memory which is kept by the Author and then, as a consequence, by the Reader. Nottetempo, casa per casa is a novel which materializes the features of postmodernist novels which are based not only on citations but also on parody and the interlacing of different codes and symbols. The stylistic and rhethoric play presented is a result of Consolo’s ideas according to which modern literature should show how to withstand the continuous degradation of culture. Key words: References, citations, intertextuality, parody, pastiche.

Opis:
Franco Buffoni’s Zemel as a Contribution to Post-Gay Literature This text, which contains some remarkable references to literature, appears to treat only of homosexuality, gay identity, and its history. In fact, however, an attempt was made to redefine the extensively discussed issue as to go even further and relate it to the roots of humanity: the relationship between sexuality, desire, and identity. Key words: gay identity, gay relationship, desire, homosexuality.

Il nomadismo tra lingue e culture raccontato da Cristina Ali Farah nel romanzo Madre piccola

Opis:
The present article offers an analysis of Cristina Ali Farah’s novel, Madre piccola. Even though it is generally believed that postcolonial novels have only been written in English, Farah’s book can definitely be classified as such, as it examines the specificity of the Italian post-colonial period, as well as the situation of women and other minority groups. Madre piccola portrays the lives of four women living on the border of two cultures. The nomadic society presented in the text-marked by temporariness, moving from one place to another-is not perceived as “local” anymore, but is presented in a more global context. The title Madre piccola means “mother’s aunt” in the Somalian language, and is an example of a word-for-word translation. Importantly, the world of women and immigrants as depicted by Farah has not been known in Europe so far. That world is far more emancipated and modern than one could expect. Ali Farah’s writing tackles not only the nature-and preservation-of what is local, but also the development of the global culture. Key words: Post-colonial Italian women’s literature, immigrants, nomadic society.

Tra storia e mistificazione La polemica contro il mito garibaldino nel romanzo di Vincenzo Consolo Il sorriso dell’ignoto marinaio alla luce di recenti studi

Opis:
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the myth of uprisings provoked by Garibaldie, and its diversified perception in the Italian society. Not only does Vincenzo Consolo discuss the myth of the Grabaldie’s uprisings, but he also describes the betrayed poor community of Sicilian tyrannized villagers who join Garbaldie so as to improve their difficult living conditions in the countryside. The main plot is set in the 1860s, which does not correspond with the facts but is the metaphor for the present time. The author builds the climax of the plot by using a historical narrative. What is more, it should be underlined that the narration is a mixture of various idiomatic expressions and registers, so that the community’s tragedy, which is deprived of any rights, could be expressed. Key words: Garibaldie’s myth, the present time metaphor, memory, history, a betrayed character.
