Opis:
The response in growth and final weight of grains from basal, middle and apical spikelets to increases in assimilate availability was studied by modifying source-sink relationships during the grain growth period in a wheat cultivar Lok-1. The source-sink relationship was altered in 1500 plants by removing spikelets in various positions i.e. either apical, middle or basal spikelets were pinched off on the day of anthesis. The final grain weight, grain growth rate and grain filling period (duration) was significantly affected by increasing the source capacity per grain by trimming i.e. removing some spikelets. The final grain weight was positively significantly correlated with grain growth rate while it was significantly but inversely correlated with grain filling duration. A clear effect of position of grain in spikelet and its (spikelet) position on the spike could be visualized. The results imply that there is a possibility that the availability of photosynthates is limiting and does not fully satisfy grain growth requirements. It is suggested that in this cultivar during post-anthesis period, grain yield is source limited.

Opis:
Grains from basal (4th), central (8th) and apical (12th) spikelets of a wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivar Lok-1 were investigated for their fresh weight, dry weight and water content. Each spikelet had 3 grains and so in all 9 grains were analyzed. Grain dry weight data was fitted to polynomial equations and biphasic linear regression analysis. The experiments described here indicated that grains having maximum water content had maximum grain weight and vice versa. Maximum water content and maximum grain weight showed a highly significant linear correlation (P < 0.001). It is suggested that in genetic manipulation in wheat, maximum water content can be a used as a reliable criterion to help in selection for final grain weight.

Opis:
In order to find a rapid, reliable method for estimating leaf area in wheat, field experiments were conducted with three wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) cultivars viz. Sonera, Lok-1 and Raj-1555. On the basis of correlation and regression analyses, the product of length and maximum width (LW) was found to be the best independent variable for determining the leaf area. The Y intercept had little affect on leaf area calculation and hence leaf area in wheat can be calculated by the simple equation Y = 0.75 LW. During the entire growth period leaf area and leaf dry weight was closely correlated but the logarithmic equation fitted better than the linear equation. Leaf area and total plant weight did not show any significant linear correlation.

Opis:
Effect of sowing time on productivity of sunflower was studied. Sunflower seeds were first sown in August (early) and the second sowing was done in September (late). Growth analysis was done at an interval of 5-6 days from germination to maturation. Growth was measured in terms of dry weight and leaf area. Various growth indices like RGR, RLGR, NAR, LAR, LWR, SLA, etc. were calculated. Cubic polynomial was the best fit for all the growth parameters. The dry matter accumulation, leaf area, leaf dry weight and leaf number were significantly more in late grown crop than early grown one. The rate of total dry weight, leaf area and leaf dry weight were higher in late grown crop as compared to early grown one. RGR, RLGR and NAR were higher in the late grown crop from the beginning, which gradually decreased later on, in both the crops. LAR was distinctly more in late grown crop between d 30-40. Changes in SLA were similar to LAR while LWR was more in the beginning and decreased afterwards. RGR showed more correlation with NAR and very low correlation with LAR in both the crops. Thus it is concluded that the late sown crop had better growth, but still, to obtain maximum productivity in sunflower, improvement in RGR and NAR is required.

The solubility of Butylated hydroxyl toluene in aqueous and alcohol solutions were determined at different temperatures (293.15 to 313.15) K. Using Van’t Hoff and Gibb’s equations, some thermodynamic functions such as Gibbs energy, enthalpy and entropy of dissolution, and of mixing of Butylated hydroxyl toluene in aqueous and alcohol solutions, were evaluated from solubility data. The solubility was greater in butanol and minimum in water. The enthalpies, entropy and Gibb’s energy of dissolution were positive for all solvents.

Some new dihydropyrano[c]chromenes derivatives are synthesized from 4-hydroxycoumarin. The structure of newly synthesized compounds was confirmed by mass, 1H NMR and IR spectroscopy. Further, antimicrobial screening of these synthesized compounds was done against some bacterial (Gram positive as well as Gram negative) and fungal strains in N,N-dimethylformamide. It is observed that some of synthesized compounds exhibited significant antibacterial activity against Gram positive bacterial strains. The selected fungal strains were most resistant for the studied compounds as none of the synthesized compounds showed activity against any of the fungal strain studied. The best antibacterial activity was shown by ABR-10.

Opis:
Catharanthus roseus G. Don. (CR) or periwinkle plants are widely grown/cultivated as garden plants in the tropics and subtropics. In spite of its predominantly entomophilous nature, CR pollen had been reported to be airborne and allergenic. The objective of this study was to discover the seasonal changes of CR pollen concentration in air, to determine its potential to cause respiratory allergy and to analyze its allergenic components. A 2-year aerobiological survey was conducted with a Burkard 7-day sampler in an agricultural farm in the suburban zone of Calcutta city where CR pollen was found to be almost perennial with 3.6-5.4% contribution to the aeropollen load. Skin prick test was conducted on 282 respiratory allergic individuals living within a 15 km radius of the study area. 29.8% of them were positive to CR pollen. Among them, 80.9% were directly involved in gardening. The whole pollen extract was subjected to gel fi ltration in a Sephacryl S-200 column. Among 5 eluted fractions, fraction I showed optimum IgE-reactivity in ELISA-inhibition. The fraction I shows 4 protein components in SDS-PAGE, within which 3 (40-66 kD molecular mass) were found to be IgE-reactive in immunoblotting using patient sera. It can be concluded that CR pollen can trigger IgEmediated respiratory allergy in the people living in close proximity.

Opis:
The present paper dealt with the annual dynamics of the absorption coefficient of chromophoric dissolved organic matter at 440 nm {aCDOM(440)} during February 2015 to January 2016 in the continental shelf of northern Bay of Bengal (nBoB) for the first time. Sea surface salinity (SSS), chlorophyll-a (Chl-a), total suspended matter (TSM) were also analyzed. It was hypothesized that CDOM should exhibit significant spatial and temporal variability in this region. aCDOM(440) and spectral slope ranged between 0.1002 m1—0.6631 m1 and 0.0071 nm1— 0.0229 nm1 respectively during the entire study period. Higher values of aCDOM(440) were observed in the near shore stations and gradually decreased towards the offshore. Significant seasonal variability of aCDOM(440) was observed between the monsoon and non-monsoon seasons ( p < 0.05). Thus the framed hypothesis was successfully accepted by means of the present study. The CDOM was mainly found to be of allochthonous character in this region. aCDOM(440) portrayed a significant negative linear relationship with SSS (R2 = 0.80; p < 0.05) implying conservative mixing of marine and terrestrial end members. However, examining the spatial variability of the relationship, it was observed that this relationship was significant only in the nearshore stations. While examining the seasonal variability of this relationship, it was found to be most significant during the monsoon (R2 = 0.81; p < 0.05). Thus it was inferred that whenever the SSS gradient was higher, the relationship between aCDOM(440) and SSS was found to be most significant.
