Eight isozyme gene loci were used to compare genetic structure and variation of parental and offspring populations of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) in the seed tree stand located in the Woziwoda Forest District of the Tuchola Forest. Although, the estimated parameters indicate small reduction of heterozygosity in offspring populations, the stand may be considered as a valuable seed source for reforestation.

Population's ability to pass genetic information to the progeny generation can be expressed through the effective population size. The true number of individuals in a population plays a significant role in ecological sciences however when considering population genetics effective population size is taken into account in the first place. The presented paper is an analysis of the variation in effective number of clones in Scots pine seed orchards in Poland for three organisation levels: plantations, Regional Directorates of State Forests (RDLPs) and jointly for the country. Thus, the effective number of clones calculated for RDLPs and the country informs about the full potential of genetic variation within a given level.

Opis:
The Polish larch (Larix decidua subsp. polonica (Racib. Domin), a subspecies of European larch, is one of the most valuable forest-forming trees in Poland. It was first discovered on the Chełmowa Mountain where Natural Reserve has been established to protect this subspecies. Currently, this unique population is at risk of extinction. Nonetheless, the knowledge on the genetic diversity of this population and surround- ing larch forests is insufficient to undertake actions aimed at conservation of genetic resources. In this study, we examined the level of genetic diversity and differentiation of four subpopulations of Polish larch from Nature Reserve on the Chełmowa Mountain and surrounding areas. We used eleven nuclear microsatellite markers (SSRs) combined in two multiplex PCR reactions. In total, 344 individuals of Polish larch were genotyped and subjected to further population genetic analyses. We found the high level of genetic diversity (average: He = 0.752, Ho = 0.720) and low levels of genetic differentiation (average: Fst = 0.022). The effective population size was large and homogeneous across subpopulations (mean Ne=90.7), and we found no sign of inbreeding. The spatial genetic structure was detected in two older subpopulations but not in the younger one, suggesting its artificial origin. The old larch subpopulations were genetically homogeneous and they were related to the ancestral group of Polish lowland populations. The old larch core populations growing on Chełmowa Mountain are relatively homogeneous and they well represent the ancestral genetic group of Polish lowland larch populations. However, they still exhibit rela- tively high genetic diversity and sufficiently large effective population sizes assuring their adaptive potential for a long-term existence. Surrounding larch populations are even more genetically diverse but this might be the effect of an admixture of seed sources from various populations from a wider area of Central Europe. We recommend that specific conservation efforts should be undertaken to promote natural regeneration of the core larch populations, even supplemented by the planting of seedlings derived from the oldest larch trees. Other management actions should focus on limiting external gene flow to this unique population of Polish larch.

We have investigated genetic diversity and the mating system of Scots pine plus trees from the Tuchola Forests – Poland, using allozymes as genetic markers. The studied plus trees possess high genetic diversity (expected heterozygosity He = 0.427) and low inbreeding (Wright’s index F = –0.028), which is comparable to Scots pine trees observed in other studies in natural populations and seed orchards. The mating system analyses revealed that almost all offspring produced by the plus trees were due to outcrossing (tm = 0.983), with no apparent bi-parental inbreeding. The estimate of correlation of paternity indicated that each of mother trees is pollinated on average by a relatively large number of effective males (Nep = 30.3). The observed genetic diversity and mating system patterns indicate that the seeds produced by the studied plus trees possess high genetic variation needed in reforestation processes.

Pedunculate and sessile oaks (Quercus robur L.; Q. petraea [Matt] Liebl.) often coexist in mixed forest stands. However, species-specific investigations and forest management actions in such populations require reliable methods of identification of the species status of individuals. We investigated genetic diversity and species dif- ferentiation of adult and naturally established seedling cohorts in a mixed forest stand composed of Q. robur and Q. petraea, located in the Jamy Nature Reserve in north-central Poland. Using nineteen nuclear microsatellite loci and a model-based clustering approach as a tool for species delineation, we efficiently identified 105 and 60 adults, as well as 191 and 456 seedlings of pedunculate and sessile oaks, respectively. While the adult trees of both species were randomly distributed throughout the sample plot, the seedlings demonstrated significant spatial clustering, which was particularly evident for Q. petraea. The two oak species exhibited similar levels of genetic diversity in adult and offspring cohorts. Inbreeding was found to be low and significant only at the stage of seedlings. The estimates of effective population size were higher for Q. robur than Q. petraea, despite the overall greater reproductive success of the later one. There was a significant level of differentiation between the studied oak species, as measured by Fst coefficient (0.084 – adults; 0.099 – seedlings). The results on genetic diversity and species differentiation obtained in the studied indigenous near-natural stand of Q. robur and Q. petraea could be considered as a reference for other population genetic studies of oaks.

Opis:
Distribution of genetic diversity among and within plant populations may depend on the mating system and the mechanisms underlying the efficiency of pollen and seed dispersal. In self-incompatible species, negative frequency- dependent selection acting on the self-incompatibility locus is expected to decrease intensity of spatial genetic structure (SGS) and to reduce population differentiation. We investigated two populations (peripheral and more central) of wild service tree (Sorbus torminalis (L.) Crantz), a self-incompatible, scattered tree species to test the differences in population differentiation and spatial genetic structure assessed at the self-incompatibility locus and neutral nuclear microsatellites. Although, both populations exhibited similar levels of genetic diversity regardless of the marker type, significant differentiation was noticed. Differences between FST and RST suggested that in the case of microsatellites both mutations and drift were responsible for the observed differentiation level, but in the case of the S-RNase locus drift played a major role. Microsatellites indicated a similar and significant level of spatial genetic structure in both populations; however, at the S-RNase locus significant spatial genetic structure was found only in the fragmented population located at the north-eastern species range limits. Differences in SGS between the populations detected at the self-incompatibility locus were attributed mainly to the differences in fragmentation and population history.

The genetic diversity within and among twelve populations (379 individuals) of Pinus mugo from the Giant Mts., Carpathians and Alps was analyzed using ten chloroplast microsatellite markers. A stepwise mutation model (SMM) for microsatellite loci was used in order to estimate divergence between populations and provenances from three mountain ranges. High levels of genetic diversity and significant differentiation were found among the three population groups. The populations from Giant Mts., Carpathians and Alps were strongly differentiated between each other, while differences among populations within these massifs were much lower. The pattern of genetic structure observedin dwarf mountain pine can be characteristic in conifers with a disjunctive geographic distribution. The significant genetic structuring among isolated parts of the geographic range of the species may be a result of an ancient fragmentation andlong lasting geographic isolation between the Giant Mts., Alpine and Tatra populations of P. mugo.

Peat-bog pine Pinus uliginosa Neumann has become extinct or rare in many parts of Europe. We have investigated the levels of genetic variation and inbreeding in seeds collected from a highly endangered reserve of this species in Poland, using allozymes as genetic markers. Generally, a high level of genetic variation was observed. The mean expected heterozygosity was 0.376, while average (Na) and effective (Ne) numbers of alleles per locus were 2.45 and 1.67, respectively. Nevertheless, we have detected relatively low levels of outcrossing, and potential biparental inbreeding. The population-wide multilocus outcrossing rate was estimated to be 0.706 (±0.091), while the minimum variance mean of single-locus estimates was distinctly lower (ts=0.611). The estimates of outcrossing calculated for individual trees ranged widely from 0.051 to 1.017, indicating the complexity of outcrossing patterns. The investigated population of P. uliginasa from Węgliniec is small and surrounded by extensive forest stands of P. sylvestris. Our three-year records of phenological observations demonstrated that flowering periods for P. uliginosa and P. sylvestris overlap, allowing for cross-pollination. The possibility of P. uliginosa pollination by P. sylvestris creates a potential danger of genetic erosion of the P. uliginosa gene pool. Nonetheless, based on a species specific cpDNA marker we have found that among 533 seedlings of P. uliginosa there were only six seedlings carrying cpDNA marker specific for P. sylvestris, indicating that such hybridization seems to be rare.

In a hairy root culture of Tanacetum parthenium treated with yeast extract (YE), silver nitrate (AgNO3) and microalgal glycoproteins (MGPS), contents of four spiroketal enol ether type diacetylenes were mesured. The elicitors transiently reduced contents of three constitutive spiroketal enol ethers and selectively enhanced accumulation of cis-C13-spiroketal enol ether epoxide ((E)-3,4-epoxy-2-(2,4-hexadiynylidene)-1,6-dioxaspiro[4.4]nonane) in the roots. The most abundant formation of cis-C13-spiroketal enol ether epoxide was observed after 48-96 h of AgNO3 treatment and 96 h of YE treatment (over 3-fold increase compared with the control). The applied elicitors caused enhanced liberation of cis-C13-spiroketal enol ether epoxide to the culture medium. The results show that diacetylene accumulation pattern in the elicited hairy roots is affected in a similar manner, irrespectively of the elicitor applied.

Divergence in genetic as well as phenotypic structures can be expected in species with disjunctive geographic ranges and restricted gene flow among isolated populations. Dwarf mountain pine has such a disjunctive geographic range in the mountains of Central Europe. We hypothesised that populations of Pinus mugo from the Giant Mts. differ from Alpine and Carpathian populations to a greater extent than differentiation within these regions; furthermore, these differences would be detectable at both the genetic and phenotypic levels. To verify this hypothesis, the diversity and differentiation within and among eleven populations from the Giant Mts., Carpathians and Alps were analysed using 19 isozyme isozyme loci, 17 needle and 15 cone morphological characters. Moreover, the data on 10 chloroplast microsatellites used in the previous study, were reanalysed. The differences between the three regions were greater than among populations within them. The microsatellites and isozymes clearly differentiated between regions, while in the multivariate analyses of cone and needle characters the Alpine and Carpathian populations were intermingled but distinct from those sampled in the Giant Mts. The significant genetic structuring among regions may result from an ancient fragmentation and long lasting geographic isolation between the Giant Mts., Alps and Tatras. The populations from the Giant Mts., the northernmost within the geographic range of P. mugo, presented lower level of genetic variation then those from the Alps and Carpathians. The pattern of genetic structure observed in dwarf mountain pine may be characteristic of wind-pollinated trees with a disjunctive geographic distribution

Od 1 stycznia 2007 r. na podstawie rozporządzenia Rady (WE) nr 2012/2006 z dnia 19 grudnia 2006 r. Polska została objęta systemem wsparcia roślin energetycznych, do których można zaliczyć także konopie włókniste. W Polsce posiadamy wieloletnie tradycje uprawy konopi. Dysponujemy odpowiednimi warunkami klimatyczno-glebowymi.
Since January 1st , 2007, on the basis of EU Directive No 2012/2006 of 19th December 2006, Poland has been included in the system of subsidies for energy plants which covers also the hemp now. Hemp cultivation in Poland is of a long tradition. Polish climatic conditions are suitable for hemp growing. Biomass yielding capacity of registered hemp cultivars (Białobrzeskie, Beniko, Silesia, Tigra) exceeds 10-15 t/ha. It was estimated that 1 ha of hemp assimilate 2.5 t CO2 per year. Technologies of cultivation and harvest of straw are developed. The research conducted at the Institute showed that hamp is a valuable raw material for energy generation (combustion heat of about 18 MJ/kg). Not only the whole plants, but also shives - a by-product of hemp straw processing, may be a source of energy. According to the EU requirements it is necessary to utilize by-products of flax and hemp straw processing. Therefore, at Stęszew Experimental Station the successful trials were conducted on briquetting of the shives and a pilot line for briquette production was installed.

Two mid-field ponds located in the agricultural catchment was chosen for the investigations. Total of 24 samples of bottom sediments were collected. The samples were taken from sediment layers: 0–5 (W1), 5–10 (W2), 10–20 (W3) and 20–30 (W4) cm, with three points at once during the 2014 winter period. Mercury content in the samples was determined by analyzer AMA 254. Higher pH (active acidity) was recorded in sediments in pond located in a rural park than pond located within agricultural crops. Bottom sediment in mid-field pond (No. 1) had higher values of organic carbon averaging 22.70% than in the pond located in a rural park (No. 2), where organic carbon content averaged 4.59%. The mercury content in bottom sediments ranged from 0.02 to 0.41 mg ⋅ kg-1. The examined sediments were classified (at points P1, P2, P3 and P4) as uncontaminated sediments (Class I) and at points S1 and S2 were classified as moderately polluted sediments (Class II). Bottom sediments classified as class I and II can be disposed in the aquatic and terrestrial environments. Mercury concentrations in samples collected from both banks of the pond No. 1 and 2 differ significantly (Tukey test p ≤ 0.05) than those in the samples collected from central part of the ponds. Chemical analysis of the individual layers of bottom sediments in ponds showed that the largest accumulation of mercury occurred in a layer W1 (0–5 cm) in pond No. 2 (at point S2).

This paper presents results of studies on N2O emission from post-bog soils from under meadows, carried out in the years 2008-2010 in the Szczecin region, in the Noteć River and Biebrza River valleys and in the Nieciecz River catchment area in the Szczerców Valley. The mean N2O emission from peat-muck soils in Poland were estimated at 20 kg·ha-¹. It was shown that under long-lasting inundation the N2O emission from peat-muck soils increases several times. It was also found that N2O emission from peat-muck soils was about three times higher than that from mucky soils and that application of mineral and organic fertilisers increased N2O emission from post-bog soils. N2O emission from a fertilised soil was from 36 to 46% higher than that from an unfertilised soil.
