Opis:: Spatial orientation, in addition to being crucial for human survival, is one of the key professional competences of a tourism graduate. Thus, the development of spatial orientation throughout university programs in tourism is vital for future specialists in this field. The question of the effectiveness of training tourism majors with regard to the formation of space orientation has not been addressed in Ukrainian higher education so far. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to trace the dynamics of geospatial literacy in students of tourism during the bachelor’s and partly master’s levels of study at Ivan Franko National University of Lviv and find its possible links to the curricular and extracurricular offering of the institution. The study comprised two parts: analysis of the curricula at both levels, specifically syllabi of compulsory and elective disciplines and course descriptions, and a comparative assessment of students’ geospatial orientation in the city of Lviv with a special focus on its tourist attractions using the method of cognitive mapping. Students of the 1st and 4th year of the bachelor’s program, as well as the 1st year of the master’s program participated in the study. The research results show a significant improvement in students’ spatial orientation in the city over years and suggest a positive correlation between the university’s offering (both curricular and extracurricular) and the progress observed.

Opis:: This article provides a geographical and functional analysis of the biggest Roman Catholic sanctuaries in Lviv archdiocese. It also explains the definition of the word “sanctuary”, its connection with Catholic canons. Based on the survey, the amount of pilgrims of 15 sanctuaries in Lviv archdiocese is calculated. Some of them are more than three hundred years in action, and some are quite new. The part of the sanctuaries is located in little villages with poorly developed infrastructure, and this is a problematic issue. The image of spatial layout the sanctuaries in Lviv archdiocese and differentiation amount of pilgrims in 2017 are show. It is interesting to dwell on some of the most popular sanctuaries in more details. Characteristics of Sanctuary of St Anthony in Lviv and others sacred place are exposed. Problems and perspectives of sanctuaries in Lviv archdiocese are identified.

Opis:: The features of development of inbound and internal tourism, excursion activity in the Ternopil oblast are exposed in the article. The analysis of tourist activity of touristic agents and tour operators, directions and structure of tourist streams of the Ternopil oblast suggestions of tourist enterprises and level of tourist market of area development is conducted. The special attention is paid to the tourist infrastructure, namely to establishments of placing, feed and leisure. Absence of specialized programs for people of senior age, that elect memorial, biographic or religiously-sentimental tours that are organized, as a rule, without participation of tourist enterprises of the area is marked, and also not enough developed infrastructure, low quality of tourist services, not formed the internal touristic product are mentioned as the components that prevent market from tourist services development.

Opis:: Attractiveness of Lviv as an urban tourist destination has grown over recent decades. The increase in numbers of visits and visitors to this city inevitably makes an important impact on local economy, cultural developments, community life, etc., and consequently gives rise to certain sustainability issues. In order to assure a long-term planning and effective management of the city’s tourism assets it is essential to run monitoring programs aimed at spotting problem areas and determining needs for changes in local tourism development. This paper aims at using indicators of sustainability of Lviv urban destination as a central instrument for improved planning and management of tourism business in the city. The research methods combine SWOT analysis and a survey carried out in 2016 in a joint effort of the authors, students of Lviv Ivan Franko National University majoring in Tourism and the City Institute commissioned by Department of Tourism of Lviv City Council. As the results of SWOT analysis suggest, main strengths of Lviv urban destination include: a) an abundance of cultural, architectural, historical and religious attractions; b) a big number of cultural and touristic events and festivals regularly held in the city; b) an increasing amount of educational offerings to people who want to get qualifications in tourism-related fields, as well as numerous opportunities for professional improvement of tourism industry workers. The opportunities mainly consist in: a) favorable conditions for the growth of businesses involved in tourism service; b) increasing income to the city budget generated by tourism industry; c) sociocultural benefits available to the local community such as a growing number of art objects, cultural venues and other assets that can be used and enjoyed by the local residents, as well as improved accessibility of various city facilities for the disabled. Among the major weaknesses and threats are a) lack of a strategy for the development of tourism industry in the framework of the overall Strategy of the city competitiveness; b) uncontrolled construction works in the historical part of town, excess of cars and traffic congestions, limited space for tourists; c) runaway of local inhabitants from the historical part of the city; d) the increased use of resources, infrastructure overload, and the problem of wastes disposal. After processing all the data collected in the study, we were able to determine the key indicators of the destination sustainability, namely tourist attractiveness of the city and tourist satisfaction with the destination. The former indicator is built upon the following sub-indicators: the presence of cultural, historical and religious sites, cultural events and entertainment, hospitality of the local population, general atmosphere and beauty of the city. The latter indicator includes information about tourist evaluation of the quality of such tourism services as accommodation, food and catering, tourist information, transportation as well as factors like availability and prices for public commodities and services, transport connections with other cities, condition of roads, security issues, etc. As a result of indicator analysis, indexes of Lviv attractiveness as an urban tourist destination and tourist satisfaction with local tourism services were calculated.

Opis:: Inclusion of the Polish sections of the Way of St. James in the European network of Camino de Santiago gave impetus to marking the Way of St. James within the territory of Ukraine. On the tenth anniversary of the opening of the Polish section of Camino de Santiago, on 10 October 2015 and 11 October 2015 in Shehyni and Medyka at the Polish-Ukrainian border, the first Ukrainian section of Camino de Santiago, the so-called Lviv Way of St. James Via Regia was connected with the Polish section of the St. James’s route – The Subcarpathian Way of St. James Via Regia.The objective of the paper is to present the origin and development of the first Ukrainian section of the Way of St. James – the Lviv Way of St. James Via Regia. Authors of the paper have also indicated the possibilities of development of the pilgrimages and religious tourism at the Polish-Ukrainian borderland on the basis of the pilgrimage route to Santiago de Compostela. In the research related to religious tourism in the examined area only Catholic church sanctuaries (Catholic church of the Latin rite and Byzantine-Ukrainian rite) located in the frontier zone at the Polish-Ukrainian borderland were taken into account.From the perspective of functioning of the Route of St. James at the Polish-Ukrainian Borderland for over a year it may be stated that it may become an important and popular section of Camino de Santiago in this part of Europe. Studies conducted confirm that this section of the route is attended by Camino pilgrims seeking silence, solitude and a kind of counterbalance to the increasingly commercialized Camino de Santiago in Spain, especially its final 100-kilometer sections leading to the sanctuary in Santiago de Compostela.The presented thesis constitutes a result of the office and field works that have been conducted by the authors on the European sections of the Way of St. James since 2006. These research works have been focused mainly on the section Camino de Santiago at the Polish-Ukrainian borderland since 2013.
