Opis:
The paper presents a psychoacoustical evaluation of selected acoustic signals, which according to Polish and international recommendations can be applied at pedestrian crosswalks. The aim of the study was the optimal adjustment of parameters of the signals emitted at pedestrian crosswalks, and to meet the expectations of persons with vision impairments as well as nearby residents or workers working near the crossing. The psychoacoustical evaluation of acoustic signals consists of determination of the hearing threshold of signals in the quiet, detection of signals presented against a background of various types of traffic noises (estimated signal-to-noise ratio) and annoyance assessment of signals. Three types of intermittent sounds were analysed: signals with rectangular time pattern filled up with rectangular wave, signals with rectangular time pattern filled up with sinusoidal wave and signals with triangular time pattern filled up with sinusoidal wave. Four fundamental frequencies (550 Hz, 880 Hz, 1580 Hz and 2000 Hz) and two repetition rates (5 Hz and 9 Hz) were tested. The results of the study have shown that the most suitable signals which can be applied at pedestrian crosswalks are the intermittent sounds with rectangular time pattern filled up with rectangular wave of fundamental frequencies 880 Hz and 1580 Hz and repetition rate 5 Hz and the intermittent sounds with rectangular time pattern and triangular time pattern both filled up with sinusoidal wave of fundamental frequencies 1580 Hz and repetition rate 5 Hz.

The present work discusses results concerning sound perception obtained in selected auditory tasks, such as pitch discrimination and pitch-timbre categorization for blind and visually impaired subjects (children and teenagers). Listeners were divided into two age groups: 7-13 year olds and 14-18 year olds. The study tested 20 individuals (8 congenitally blind and 12 visually impaired) and 20 sighted persons comprising reference groups. The timing of the experiments was as short as possible due to the fact that our listeners were children. To date, no study has described results of such experiments for blind/visually handicapped children and teenagers. It was shown that the performance of blind/visually impaired participants was not as good as that of blind adults in pitch discrimination and pitch-timbre categorization tasks. These results may have implications for the development of auditory training in orientation and mobility of young visually handicapped people.

Opis:
The paper presents results concerning vibratory detection thresholds measured on a wrist and proximal phalange and fingertips of the index, middle and ring fingers for blind and visually impaired teenagers. Subjects with vision dysfunctions were divided into two groups: congenitally blind and visually impaired. The study tested 10 handicapped individuals (5 congenitally blind and 5 visually impaired) and 10 sighted persons making reference groups chosen to be adequate in terms of age, gender, body mass and height. To date, no study has described results of such experiments for blind/visually handicapped teenagers. Vibratory perception thresholds were tracked using the Bekesy algorithm. The thresholds were investigated as a function of stimulating force frequency and magnitude or an area of a stimulating probe. Threshold values obtained for the wrist were higher than values obtained for proximal phalange and fingertips. It was shown that the performance of blind/visually impaired teenagers was not better than their sighted counterparts. Suggestions about technical form and physical parameters of a vibrating device signalling places particularly dangerous for blind/visually handicapped people were formulated.

The impact of musical experience on results concerning sound perception in selected auditory tasks, such as pitch discrimination, pitch-timbre categorization and pitch memorization for blind and visually impaired children and teenagers is discussed. Subjects were divided into three groups: of those with no experience of music, with small musical experience and with substantial musical experience. The blind and visually impaired subjects were investigated, while sighted persons formed reference groups. To date no study has described impact of musical experience on results of such experiments for blind and visually impaired children and teenagers. Our results suggest that blind persons with musical experience may be more sensitive to frequency differences and differences in timbre between two signals as well as may have better short-term auditory memory than blind people with no musical experience. Musical experience of visually impaired persons does not necessary lead to better performance in all conducted auditory tasks.

Opis:
The aim of this study was to create a single-language counterpart of the International Speech Test Signal (ISTS) and to compare both with respect to their acoustical characteristics. The development procedure of the Polish Speech Test Signal (PSTS) was analogous to the one of ISTS. The main difference was that instead of multi-lingual recordings, speech recordings of five Polish speakers were used. The recordings were cut into 100-600 ms long segments and composed into one-minute long signal, obeying a set of composition rules, imposed mainly to preserve a natural, speech-like features of the signal. Analyses revealed some differences between ISTS and PSTS. The latter has about twice as high volume of voiceless fragments of speech. PSTS’s sound pressure levels in 1/3-octave bands resemble the shape of the Polish long-term average female speech spectrum, having distinctive maxima at 3-4 and 8-10 kHz which ISTS lacks. As PSTS is representative of Polish language and contains inputs from multiple speakers, it can potentially find an application as a standardized signal used during the procedure of fitting hearing aids for patients that use Polish as their main language.

Opis:
Performance of blind/visually impaired children and teenagers before and after the auditory training and the music training in some auditory tasks (pitch discrimination, pitch-timbre categorization, pitch memory, lateralization of a stationary sound of a drum, lateralization of one or two moving motor vehicles) is compared. In the auditory training, the subjects were actively involved, i.e. they had to answer questions related to presented sound material. The music training was based on passive listening to sounds presented according to the Tomatis method. The training (auditory or music) effectiveness was measured as a difference between results of a pre- and post-training verification test in which the subjects were asked to perform the auditory tasks mentioned at the beginning. The persons who took part in the study were divided into two age groups: 7-12 year olds and 13-19 year olds. According to the results, the auditory training was beneficial for blind or visually impaired teenagers, especially in respect of lateralization tasks. For small children the auditory training was not as effective as for adolescents. However, it has been shown that the music training was generally beneficial for them, although none of the verification tasks was privileged.

Opis:
Elaboration of a new method of teaching spatial orientation to blind and visually handicapped persons base on urban environment sounds was shown. Task 1 is a questionnaire inquiry on the problems of the blind moving in a big city. In Task 2 a preliminary selection and classification of the acoustic signals and vibrations that can be useful for spatial orientation was made. In Task 3 an analysis of acoustic signals for sound signalisation at pedestrian crossings was made. Some solutions for acoustic signalization were proposed. In Task 4 sounds and vibrations necessary for a library of acoustic events and situations characteristic of a city were recorded. In Task 5 the library was created and arranged to be ready to be used by teachers in the spatial orientation training. The most important outcome of the study was to develop a method of spatial orientation teaching with employment of sounds and verification of the method (Task 6). After verification it is concluded that the method is useful for spatial education of the blind at different levels of their education.

Wprowadzenie. Sytuację dodatkowo komplikuje „drenaż kadr medycznych” – migracja profesjonalistów z krajów biedniejszych do bogatszych. Cel. Celem pracy jest identyfikacja planów zawodowych i migracyjnych studentów położnictwa. Materiał i metoda. Badania ankietowe przeprowadzono w 2013 roku, wśród 41 położnych, kończących studia magisterskie na Uniwersytecie Medycznym w Lublinie. Wyniki. Wnioski.
Introduction. A deficiency of medical staff in many countries has already become a fact. This phenomenon is progressing due, among other things, to globalisation and internalisation of medical professions. Other factors which contribute to the deficit mentioned above, are the ageing of societies and an increased demand for medical services. Simultaneously, it is observed that adolescents become unwilling to undertake studies in medical professions, especially those which are lowpaid or socially underestimated and, at the same time, connected with a high responsibility and the necessity to extend one’s knowledge (e.g. nurses and midwives). The situation is being complicated even more by the ‘drainage of medical staff’ – a migration of professionals from the poorer to the wealthier countries. The aim of the study is to identify the professional and migration plans of the students of obstetrics. Material and methods. Survey studies were carried out in 2013, among 41 midwives completing Master’s studies at Medical University in Lublin. Results. The occupational plans most frequently reported by the respondents related to undertaking a job in a hospital (92.7%) and expansion of knowledge (70.7%). Every fifth respondent planned to work abroad (22.0%). The main reasons for which the respondents tended to leave the country and work abroad were: higher salary (100%), better living conditions (82.9%), greater comfort of performing the occupation (63.4%) and a low status of the chosen profession in Poland (68.3%). Conclusions. Financial migration, in the situation of the surveyed, is a serious alternative to earning money and continuing a professional career in Poland. Nevertheless, the range of preparations for departure and optimistic visions of expanding a professional career within the country allow one to assume that the actual scope of migration among the researched can be lower than that declared.

The in vitro studies have shown a high sensitivity of T. vaginatis strains to the spermicidal drug Afro of Polish production. Among 36 strains under examination there were individual differences in the sensitivity to the drug. Moreover, the in vivo experiments performed in guinea pigs disclosed that Afro when given intravaginally prevented the incidence of trichomonal invasion in these animals. In the Ist group of guinea pigs receiving the drug 3 hours before the infection none of the 5 animals developed the symptoms of trichomonadosis. In the IId group of 5 animals that were administered Afro 6 hours before the infection the prophylactic effect was found in 4 cases, and in the IIId group where the drug was given 12 hours prior to infection the trichomonadosis symptoms did occur in 2 out of 5 guinea pigs. The in vivo experiments made on guinea pigs require still further confirmation on larger material.
