Opis:
A bauxite ore from Um Bogma, Southwestern Sinai, Egypt was mineralogically characterized. It contains 70% gibbsite, 13.2% quartz and 11.0% kaolinite. Beneficiation of the ore reduced the quartz content to 2.4%. Hydrometallurgical processing of the beneficiated gibbsitic bauxite was performed by hot leaching with sodium carbonate and lime in an attritor. Aluminium was converted to soluble sodium aluminate low in SiO2 (<0.1%) and the recovery was over 95% for a short leaching duration of 30 minutes at 90 °C. The residue was essentially composed of calcium silicate.

Opis:
The dynamic of soil moisture may be studied through water flux, storage, moisture conductivity and movement into the soil pore spaces. The volume of pore space in the soil and also the size, shape, type, continuity and distribution of the pores are important characteristics related to the storage, conductivity and movement of water and gases. The movement of water by gravitational forces in the natural soils occurs principally through the non-capillary pores (i.e. rapidly drained pores), while other movements occur in capillaries which may be classified as coarse and fine capillary pores. The unsaturated condition of soil water is a common state in nature after rainfall or as a result of irrigation, therefore, the purpose of this study was to develop equations to describe and estimate the unsaturated hydraulic conductivity K(θ) in relation to soil pore-size classes that contained the available water in the soil root zone. The equations were based on a water-retention curve, saturated hydraulic conductivity and pore-size function measured from undisturbed cores. The equations were applied to three soil profiles from the Nile Delta and compared with measured K(θ) data from two field experiments, which were conducted in clay in an unsaturated condition and in sandy soil areas using the internal drainage in situ method. The pore size function f(r) represents the fraction of the total pore whichvolume, which was contributed by pores with radii from 0 to ∞ at the prevailing degree of saturation. Data showed the applicability of the suggested equations for calculating unsaturated hydraulic conductivity in the soil pores even for soils with a high proportion of clay.

Opis:
The purpose of this study is to predict the contribution of the water table in moistening the root zone using theoretical and empirical equations containing the parameters of evapotranspiration, crop factor, and capillary rise in relation to the hydrophysical properties of soil. Five alluvial (clay) soil profiles located at middle Nile Delta were investigated for the application of the assumed equations. Four areas of soils were cultivated with wheat and clover in the winter and maize in the summer, and citrus trees in 2014/2015 growing season. Soil samples from the investigated areas were subjected to chemical and physical analyses. Water table depths were determined using field piezometers in the same places where the soil samples were collected. The other hydro-physical parameters were estimated. It was found that the water table contributed 20-40% of the irrigation water applied to the root zone in winter and 20% or less during the summer in the studied soils areas. An equation was derived to estimate the sorptivity (S) under dry conditions and at steady state infiltration. It was observed that S is decreased from unsaturated state to steady-state infiltration by 23.1 to 45.7% in cultivated soils and to 55.2% in uncultivated soil. Infiltration functions were estimated. It was suggested that the sorptivity at the steady infiltration rate (steady sorptivity, Sw) may be used to predict the hydraulic conductivity and the basic infiltration rate Ib. The calculated values of Ib by Sw corresponded to those obtained by infiltration experiment. This confirmed the significance of steady Sw as a new functional infiltration parameter. Also, data showed that the values of K(θ) calculated by the proposed equations were in the common ranges for such soils. The equations used (models) related K(θ) to soil pore radius (r) which were in turn based on soil hydraulic data including water retention h(θ), field basic infiltration rate, water sorptivity (S) and the distribution density function f(r) of soil pore size. The steady Sw parameter was used in the prediction of the hydraulic conductivity K(θ) and the basic (steady) infiltration rate Ib. It was concluded that in winter the water table contributed 20-40% of irrigation water applied to the root zone and less than 20% during the summer in the studied soils areas. These values should be considered in calculating the crop water requirements.

A processing of El-Fayoum montmorillonite-type clay was carried out by leaching with commercial sulphuric acid using a ball mill type autoclave. This process yields lithium sulfate which can be used either for production of lithium carbonate or lithium metal. The effect of temperature, grain size, and sulfuric acid concentration and leaching on lithium recovery as well as the on kinetics of leaching process has been studied. The most favorable environment for the leaching of lithium from El-Fayoum bentonites with H2SO4 is at 250°C for 90 min using H2SO4 concentration equal to 8 kmol/m3 and grain size of -40 µm.

Opis:
Three problems in the taxonomy of Pancratium in Egypt are the lack of publications, a lack of clarity about the relationships between recently distinguished species, and the lack of markers for examining the levels and patterns of variation in rare and endemic species; the latter hinders work in plant conservation genetics. In this study we reassessed the taxonomic status of the Pancratium species of Egypt, and examined morphological and genetic variation within and between species, using specimens from different populations collected throughout its distribution range in the country. Our assessment was based on 38 macromorphological characters mainly representing vegetative parts, flowers, fruits and seeds, in addition to RAPD data. The results revealed five morphologically distinguished Pancratium species in Egypt, of which P. trianthum Herb. is newly recorded. Species identification was confirmed by two phenetic dendrograms generated with 26 quantitative morphological characters and RAPD data, while species delimitation was verified by principal component analysis. The diagnostic floral characters are those of the perianth, corona teeth, pistil, stamens, aerial scape, spathe, and number of flowers. The retrieved RAPD polymorphic bands show better resolution of the morphologically and ecologically closely allied Pancratium species (P. arabicum and P. maritimum), and also confirm the morphological and ecological divergence of P. tortuosum from the other studied species. These results are supported by the constructed UPGMA dendrogram.

Two parameters, regularization parameter c, which determines the trade off cost between minimizing the training error and minimizing the complexity of the model and parameter sigma (σ) of the kernel function which defines the non-linear mapping from the input space to some high-dimensional feature space, which constructs a non-linear decision hyper surface in an input space, must be carefully predetermined in establishing an efficient support vector machine (SVM) model. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to develop a genetic-based SVM (GASVM) model that can automatically determine the optimal parameters, c and sigma, of SVM with the highest predictive accuracy and generalization ability simultaneously. The GASVM scheme is applied on observed monitored data of a pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant (PWRNPP) to classify its associated faults. Compared to the standard SVM model, simulation of GASVM indicates its superiority when applied on the dataset with unbalanced classes. GASVM scheme can gain higher classification with accurate and faster learning speed.

Opis:
Colocasia esculenta (Taro) is an edible tuberous plant; however, corms are its most worldwide consumed part while the corm powder is widely used in food industries. In this work, a sulphated polysaccharide extract of C. esculenta corm (SCE) was prepared and its cancer chemopreventive properties was explored. The amending of carcinogen metabolism and radical scavenging affinity revealed that SCE is a strong tumor anti-initiation agent via suppressing cytochrome P450-1A and enhancing glutathione and the carcinogen detoxification enzyme; glutathione S-transferase. SCE exhibited a strong scavenging affinity towards critical radicals (hydroxyl and peroxyl). It induced lymphocyte growth and modulated the macrophage functions into an anti-inflammatory profile, via elevating macrophage proliferation and its binding affinity of fluorescein isothiocyanate-lipopolysaccharide (FITC-LPS) and inhibiting nitric oxide and tumor necrosis factor-α generation. Furthermore, SCE showed a potent cytotoxicity against human breast MCF-7 carcinoma cells (IC50 27.73 µg/mL), whereas SCE treatment inhibited the activity of histone deacetylase (HDAC IC50 37.70 µg/mL) and disturbed the pattern of cell cycle phases. An arrest in both S- and G2/M-phases was linked with shifted cell populations towards late apoptosis and necrosis, as detected by flow cytometry. SCE is a promising cancer chemopreventive agent to be used in healthy food industries and for high breast cancer-risk population.
