Opis:
Purpose: The present study evaluates antioxidant activity, as well as polyphenol and flavonoid contents in common sprouts, available on the Polish market. The aim of this study was to extend our already published food databases. Materials and methods: Ten seed species from four plant families were analysed. Total polyphenol content of sprout extracts was determined using the Folin-Ciocalteau method. Total flavonoid content was assessed by the aluminium chloride colorimetric method. Total antioxidant status was measured using FRAP and ABTS methods. Results: The FRAP antioxidant potential was 0.60- 2.53 mmol TE (trolox equivalents)/100 g FM (fresh mass), and arranged in descending order it was: white mustard>cress>radish>broccoli>chickpea> sunflower>mung bean>wheat>green lentil>alfalfa), while the ABTS potential was 3.92-16.19 mmol TE/100 g FM (according to decreasing value: white mustard>green lentil>chickpea>sunflower>mung bean>cress> alfalfa>wheat> broccoli> radish). The polyphenol content was 160-774 mg GAE (gallic acid equivalents)/100 g FM, and flavonoid content 15-53 mg QE (quercetin equivalents)/100 g FM. Conclusion: Our results suggest that sprouts in comparison to other foods, despite small weight can be powerful sources of antioxidants. Special attention in human nutrition should be paid to white mustard sprouts as they are excellent source of polyphenol and flavonoid and are characterized by tremendous antioxidant activity.

Opis:
The biopolymer chitosan is a derivative of chitin, which can promote plant growth and protect plants from phytopathogens. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of chitosan as a biostimulant and a biorational agent to protect cucumber plants from damping-off disease caused by Phytophthora capsici. Cucumber seeds were treated with a range of chitosan concentrations, viz. 0, 125, 250, and 500 ppm, to evaluate effect on seed germination and fresh root and shoot weight of the seedlings. Chitosan significantly (p ≤ 0.05) enhanced seed germination and root and shoot growth of cucumber in a dose-dependent manner up to 500 ppm. Application of in vitro chitosan suspension onto P. capsici mycelial plug suppressed growth of mycelia, formation of sporangia, and release of P. capsici zoospores at 125–500 ppm concentrations. Cucumber seedlings from chitosan-treated seeds showed enhanced resistance to damping-off disease caused by P. capsici compared to untreated control. Cucumber seedlings from 500 ppm chitosan seed treatment showed 100% disease resistance against damping off caused by P. capsici. These results suggest that chitosan could be used as a natural and environmentally safe alternative to a synthetic growth promoter and pesticide for sustainable production of cucumber.
Zastosowanie zawiesiny chitozanu w zakresie stężeń 125–500 ppm w warunkach in vitro hamowało wzrost grzybni P. capsici, tworzenie sporangiów i uwalnianie zoospor P. capsici.

The purpose of the research is to study the current state, features of growth and formation of Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris L.) stands in Eastern Polissia of Ukraine. The structure of pine stands by origin, age, the density of stocking, site indices, forest types and health condition was analysed. Features of the formation of stands were studied at the permanent sample plots. Visual assessment of health condition, as well as signs of pest and disease damage of trees, other defects and external signs that caused stem defects was carried out. The age structure of pine stands was not optimal: there was an excess of mature stands and a lack of young stands. The health condition of mixed pine stands was relatively better than that of pure pine stands. Mixed pine stands were characterised by high biological resistance and accumulated significant wood stock under regular sylvicultural maintenance. The dynamics of forestry and evaluation indicators of reference pine stands were evaluated and comparison of their growth with stocked pine stands was performed.

Introduction. It is well known that exposure to organic dust can cause adverse respiratory effect. The pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPS) in the organic dust, such as endotoxin from Gram-negative bacteria cell wall and fungal components, can trigger the release of cytokine (e.g. Interleukin 1β (IL-1β)) and chemokine (e.g. Interleukin 8 (IL-8)) from the immune cells in the airways. Objective. To evaluate the potential inflammatory effects of organic dust exposure in energy plants in Denmark. Materials and methods. Nasal lavage (NAL) and exhaled breath condensate (EBC) were sampled at Monday morning (referred to as before work) and again at Thursday afternoon (referred to as after work). NAL IL-8, EBC pH, IL-1β concentration were measured. Personal exposure to endotoxin and dust was calculated from time spent on different tasks and measured average work area exposures. Results. Before work, workers from biofuel plants had a higher IL-1β and IL-8 concentration compared to conventional fuel plants (control group). Specifically, the IL-1β level of moderately and most exposed group, and IL-8 level of the least exposed group were higher compared to the control group. The changes of IL-1β, pH and IL-8 during a work week were not significant. Workers with rhinitis had a lower percentage change of IL-8 compared to healthy workers. Conclusions. An increased level of EBC IL-1β in biofuel energy plant workers before work indicated a chronic or sub-chronic inflammation. The percentage change of IL-8 was lower in workers with rhinitis compared to healthy workers.

Opis:
Extinct aurochs (Bos primigenius), accepted as the ancestor of domestic cattle, was one of the largest wild animals inhabiting Europe, Asia and North Africa. The gradual process of aurochs extinction finished in Poland in 1627, were the last recorded aurochs, a female, died. Some aspects of cattle domestication history and the distribution of aurochs genetic material among modern cattle breeds still remain unclear. Analyses of ancient DNA (aDNA) from bone sample deliver new genetic information about extinct wild aurochs as well as modern cattle phylogeny. DNA was extracted from a fragment of aurochs fossil bone found in the Pisz Forest, Poland. The sample was radiocarbon-dated to about 1500 yBP. The aDNA was used for Whole Genome Amplification in order to form a DNA bank. Auroch mitochondrial DNA sequences were amplified using sets of 41 primers overlapping the whole mtDNA, cloned and sequenced. The sequence of the whole mitochondrial genome was reconstructed and deposed in GenBank [GenBank:JQ437479]. Based on the phylogenetic analyses of the Bovine mitochondrial genomes, a phylogenetic tree was created. As expected, the tree clearly shows that the mtDNA sequence of the analyzed PWA (Polish Wild Aurochs) individual belongs to haplogroup P. In the course of the comparative mtDNA analysis we identified 30 nucleotide marker positions for haplogroup P and nine unique PWA differences compared to the two remaining haplotype P representatives. Our analysis provides the next step to the reconstruction of the demographic history of this extinct but still exciting species.

Opis:
The paper presents results of compressive strength examination and loss of compressive strength after 34 freezing-thawing cycles for concrete with 75% volumetric quantity of recycled concrete aggregate in whole aggregate composition. Recycled aggregate was prepared by crushing of parent concrete produced earlier in a laboratory. Results show that high quality of recycled concrete comparable to the quality of similar concretes made from natural aggregate can be achieved. However, better results are obtained when carbonated aggregate is used. Final compressive strength of concrete with such type of aggregate was higher at the level of 16-23% comparing to series with unmodified recycled aggregate. Freeze-thaw resistance, expressed as the compressive strength loss, was also better in series of concrete with carbonated aggregate. That type of concrete showed only 13-21% loss in compressive strength in contrast to 26-44% obtained for series with unmodified concrete aggregate.

Opis:
Invasive tree species are one of the most important threats to the riparian ecosystems. We aimed to check (1) whether invasive tree species have wider annual radial increments than native species and (2) which climatic factors (describing annual variability of air temperature and precipitations) influence radial growth of the investigated species. The study was conducted in the Warta river valley in Poznań (W Poland). Detrended chronologies were built using 28 cores bored from Acer negundo and 20 from Fraxinus pennsylvanica. Mean annual radial increment of A. negundo was of 3.91 ±0.19 mm and of F. pennsylvanica – 2.76 ±0.08 mm. Radial growth of A. negundo was significantly correlated to precipitation in June of the increment year and temperature in November of the year before the increment. In turn, radial growth of F. pennsylvanica was significantly correlated to precipitation in April and temperature in May and June of the increment year. These factors explained 44 and 55% of variance in radial increments widths of A. negundo and F. pennsylvanica, respectively. Annual radial growth of the alien species studied were higher than in case of native riparian species. Thus, studied invasive species constitute a serious threat for the analysed riparian ecosystems. Obtained results may be helpful for predicting their spread under projected climate change scenarios.

Postcranial skeletal pneumaticity (PSP) is present in a range of basal sauropodomorphs spanning the basal sauropodomorph–sauropod transition. We describe the PSP of five taxa, Plateosaurus engelhardti, Eucnemesaurus fortis, Aardonyx celestae, Antetonitrus ingenipes, and an unnamed basal sauropod from Spion Kop, South Africa (hereafter referred to as the Spion Kop sauropod). The PSP of Plateosaurus is apparently sporadic in its occurrence and has only been observed in very few specimens, in which it is of very limited extent, affecting only the posterior cervical vertebrae and possibly the mid dorsals in one specimen. The PSP of Eucnemesaurus, Aardonyx, Antetonitrus, and the Spion Kop sauropod consists of subfossae (fossa−within−fossa structures) that excavate the vertices of the posterior infradiapophyseal fossae of the posterior dorsal vertebrae. These subfossae range from simple shallow depressions (Eucnemesaurus) to deep, steepsided, internally subdivided and asymmetrically developed chambers (Antetonitrus). The middle and anterior dorsal vertebrae of these taxa lack PSP, demonstrating that abdominal air sacs were the source of the invasive diverticula. The presence of pneumatic features within the infradiapophyseal fossae suggest that the homologous fossae of more basal saurischians and dinosauriforms were receptacles that housed pneumatic diverticula. We suggest that it is probable that rigid non−compliant lungs ventilated by compliant posterior air sacs evolved prior to the origination of Dinosauria.

The demand for feldspar as a raw material for various industrial applications continuously increases. Feldspar is a primary raw material in manufacturing ceramics, glass, fillers, welding electrodes, and enamel. Feldspar is often associated with iron oxide, which decreases its economic value and hinders its industrial application. The present work aimed at reducing iron oxide content in Egyptian feldspar ore from the Wadi Zerabi locality. Ball milling was used for preparing feldspar feed of size -250+45μm. Carpco dry high-intensity magnetic separation followed by acid leaching processes were carried out in order to decrease the iron contamination and increase the feldspar content. A Box-Behnken statistical design was used to optimize the magnetic separation results. From a feldspar feed containing 1.40% Fe2O3, a non-magnetic concentrate of 0.25% Fe2O3 was obtained. The Fe2O3 removal reached up to 82% with a high yield as the % weight of non-magnetic feldspar reached up to 97.5%. The leaching process further reduced the iron oxide content down to 0.19 %. Also, the feldspar whiteness was improved from 65.17% in the original ore to 85.60% in the leached product.

The objective of this study was to investigate the ranges of intra- and interindividual variability on the example of R. canina. For this purpose, four flowers were collected randomly (72 flowers in total)from 18 wild shrubs of R. canina growing in one population in Poznań (Poland)and then, from each flower, 50 correctly formed pollen grains (200 pollen grains per each individual)were selected. Inter- and intraindividual pollen grain variability was characterised based on 3600 pollen grains. They were analysed for seven quantitative features, i.e. length of polar axis (P), equatorial diameter (E), thickness of the exine along the polar axis (Exp), length of ectocolpi (Le) and P/E, Exp/P, and Le/P ratios. Our study revealed highly significant differences among flowers of the particular R. canina individuals with respect to all pollen grain biometrical features. In addition, it showed that the assessment of the full range of variability in pollen grain biometric features within one individual (shrub)was more reliable if we examined several pollen grains from several flowers than for the same number of pollen grains derived from a single flower. We also found statistically significant differences among particular individuals in all pollen grain features. This proves that in order to well characterise a population of a given species from the point of view of palynology, the plant material should derive from a possibly numerous number of individuals (shrubs).

The variability of pollen grains of 16 species from genus Rosa L. was studied (i.e. Rosa agrestis, R. canina, R. dumalis, R. gallica, R. inodora, R. jundzillii, R. kostrakiewiczii, R. majalis, R. micrantha, R. mollis, R. pendulina, R. rubiginosa, R. sherardii, R. tomentosa, R. villosa, and R. zalana). The material came from 107 native localities of those species in Poland. The measurements are based on at least 30–50 randomly selected mature pollen grains per specimen. In total, 3510 pollen grains were examined. They were analysed for 8 quantitative features, i.e. length of polar axis (P), length of equatorial axis (E), exine thickness on the pole (Exp), exine thickness at the equator plane (Exe), length of ectocolpi (Le), P/E ratio, and relative thickness of exine (Exp/P and Exe/E ratio). Statistically significant differences were found among the examined species with regard to all analysed pollen features. The pollen and ectocolpi dimensions (P, E and Le) were largest in R.gallica (35.9, 28.1, and 28.0 μm, respectively) and smallest in R. majalis (27.0, 20.2, and 21.2 μm, respectively). The mean coefficients of variability of the pollen features measured can be used to arrange the examined rose species from the least to the most variable as follows: R. pendulina, R. villosa, R. jundzillii, R. inodora, R. canina, R. rubiginosa, R. dumalis, R. gallica, R. agrestis , R. micrantha, R. zalana, R. tomentosa, R. sherardii, R. majalis, R. kostrakiewiczii and R. mollis. The obtained data failed to confirm fully both the division of the Rosa genus currently in force in taxonomy into sections as well as relationships among the examined species from the Caninae section. In addition, values of morphological characters of the same species may differ considerably from one another. The extent of these differences indicated that it was necessary to measure large numbers of pollen grains in order to obtain accurate biometric data.

Opis:
The “Źródła Rzeki Łyny im. prof. R. Kobendzy” nature reserve was established in 1959 and occupies the area of 120.54 ha. The paper describes fl ora and plant communities of this reserve. In total 409 vascular plant taxa from 70 families and 235 genera were inventoried, including 24 species which are under legal protection, as well as rare plants and those which are threatened in this region. Nine plant communities were identifi ed within the boundaries of the reserve of which three were forest autogenic or autogenic-like communities (Ribeso nigri-Alnetum, Stellario nemorum-Alnetum glutinosae, Tilio cordatae- -Carpinetum betuli), three were forest anthropogenic communities with Pinus sylvestris, Betula pendula, Larix decidua and Larix ×eurolepis and Picea abies on lime-oak-hornbeam forest sites, as well as three non-forest communities (Salicetum pentandro-cinereae, Phragmitetum australis and a meadow community from the Molinio-Arrhenatheretea class). The highest natural value was determined in very well developed phytocoenoses of Stellario nemorum-Alnetum glutinosae (the rarest in the reserve), in Ribeso nigri-Alnetum and Tilio cordatae-Carpinetum betuli, as well as meadow communities from the Molinio-Arrhenatheretea class. They provide sanctuary for many species of rare and threatened plants.
