Opis:
From the beginning of his literary career, Thomas Gray consciously and consistently created a lyric with a poetic effect quite of its own in which a personal element (death of a friend) kept on vanishing, toposes and literary allusions overlapped (e.g. images of melancholy inspired by works of John Milton and Thomas Warton) and in which bitter philosophical reflection on life and death mounted in time. It is this reflection that predestined the groundbreaking character of Elegy written in a country churchyard and determined its popularity in English literature and beyond. The interpretation of space, the reflection on the subjectivity and the role of the epitaph (constituting at the same time a structural part of Elegy..., as well as the funeral genre that is thematically related to the Gray’s poem) have made it possible to show the poem written in mid-eighteenth century as a substantial reference point for Romantic authors transforming the genre.

Opis:
The article’s goal is an inquiry into the main contexts, in Polish and French Romanticism, for the metaphor of black sun; the metaphor belongs with images and themes clearly marked by the experience of melancholia. There was also a significant impact of astronomical fantasies which, perhaps surprisingly, were very popular in Romanticism. Another important reference point for the present text analysis is the Biblical tradition (related mainly to Old Testament books and The Revelation). However, it must be stressed that the popularity of the metaphor of black sun, both in France and in Poland, was undoubtedly fostered by the popularity of Dürer’s print Melancholia I, and Jean-Paul Richter’s famous Speech of the Dead Christ. In works by selected authors, who represent the two language areas under discussion (including Gautier, Nerval, Słowacki, and Krasiński), it is possible to notice significant differences, which allow for asserting the existence of a different model of dissemination of the image of black sun. Inasmuch as French Romantics mostly approach the image in aesthetic and existential terms, the Polish authors clearly focus on metaphysical and historiographical approaches. It is also important that contrary to Biblical sources, where the image of black sun was often related to God’s wrath or his intervention in earthly order, as in Last Judgement, and contrary to astronomical sources, which eliminated individual perspective and clearly strived for objective approach, the metaphor of black sun in texts by Romantic authors is mostly of anthropological quality; it is an image of the human being confronted by individually experienced transience (in the existential model, closer to French Romantics), or in confrontation with time of a community (historiosophic model, which dominates in texts by Polish Romantics).

Opis:
The aim of the article is to analyze the experience of solitude in Memoirs of aMadman (1838), one of the youthful works of Gustave Flaubert, where autobiographical and fictional elements are interspersed. The narrator of Memoirs… is a loner in a threefoldsense: social (it is a result of reluctance and even hatred towards society and a consequence of misanthropy and romantic elitism), metaphysical (a man in Memoirs… seemsto be abandoned, vainly seeking rest in God or in any au-delà) and existential (Memoirs… are written by someone who is empty, burned out, unable to creatively engage in life; he is a stranger to himself). The typology seems to be an obvious affirmation of romantic phenomenon. But Flaubert’s youthful work is not imitative: the experience of loneliness has been subjected to a process of disillusion that ruins the romantic myths

The aim of this article is to discuss Mirosław Loba’s book titled Wokół narracyjnego zwrotu. Szkice krytyczne [Around the Narrative Turn: Critical Essays]. The book is a reconstruction of the main trends in contemporary French thought on narrative (the psychoanalytic approach and Paul Ricoeur’s concept are particularly emphasized). Loba’s theoretical perspective is complemented by analytical attempts – the researcher interprets Andrea Camilleri’s and Donna Leon’s criminal novels and he also proposes one of the most interesting Polish interpretations of Jonathan Little’s The Kindly Ones.
