Historically a much greater range of styles of literary humour were to be found in Britain than in the United States because Britain was a much more hierarchical society with a divided elite and an aristocratic as well as a bourgeois aesthetic. In America there was a single dominant class, that of independent farmers and the businessmen and professional people of medium sized cities whose optimistic, egalitarian, moralistic, culture restricted the range of styles an aspiring American humorous writer could use. This restrictiveness remained long after American had become the world's leading, richest and most technologically advanced economy. British humour alone was able to use styles that valued detachment from conventional morality and also took inequality for granted and hence devised forms of aggressive mockery that could be directed downwards. British humour was also able to employ a greater reach of allusiveness, vocabulary and sophistication than was possible in America. It was the rise of Jewish humour in America from a new initially immigrant population that valued things of the intellect for their own sake and which had also mastered the arts of detachment that enabled American literary humour to achieve a comparable degree of variety and sophistication to that of Britain in the course of the twentieth century.

Muon spin rotation studies on high temperature superconducting cuprates will be reviewed. After an introduction to the technique, studies on the superfluid density will be described and the universal variation of the superfluid density n$\text{}_{s}$ as a function of p will be presented. Important exceptions will be discussed, such as the YBa$\text{}_{2}$Cu$\text{}_{3}$O$\text{}_{7-δ}$ system, where, besides the intrinsically superconducting CuO$\text{}_{2}$ planes, an interlayer may be metallised (here the CuO chains) which consequently contributes to a significant enhancement in superfluid density and associated improvement in technologically interesting properties such as flux pinning and critical current density. Evidence for an unconventional pairing state, possibly with d-wave symmetry, is presented from studies of the rapid suppression of superfluid density due to the substitution of structural inhomogeneities (such as Zn) that introduce strong scattering centers within the CuO$\text{}_{2}$ planes. Finally, the phase diagram of the antiferromagnetic correlations and, in particular, their coexistence with the superconducting state, will be discussed in terms of muon spin rotation experiments in zero external magnetic field.

The dining cryptographers protocol implements a multiple access channel in which senders and recipients are anonymous. A problem is that a malicious participant can disrupt communication by deliberately creating collisions. We propose a computationally secure dining cryptographers protocol with collision resolution that achieves a maximum stable throughput of 0.924 messages per round and which allows to easily detect disruptors.

Unlike most freshwater bivalves, zebra mussels (Dreissena polymorpha PALLAS) have free swimming larvae and are thus dependent on water currents to guarantee the spreading of their offspring. Although planktonic, the larvae are able to carry out some directed movements. This paper presents investigations carried out in the Szczecin Lagoon, testing the settlement of larvae on different materials at three sites. Zebra mussel larvae preferred the central part of the lagoon for settlement and favoured horizontal over vertical orientation. The rank order referring to number of settled mussels was net > wood > stones > mussel shells > PVc. Water current velocity in the crucial phase was usually very low (<10 cm/s), i.e. not above the limit for settlement. Therefore, other parameters must be involved as well. Two factors are discussed in particular: 1) salinity, and 2) sensory capacities of larvae, linked to the question of their capability of choosing where they settle.

Although much has been written about stakeholders, we reframe the subject in terms of competitive advantage using an approach that systematically integrates stakeholder considerations into business strategy and operations. Celem artykułu jest propozycja metody oszacowania mnożnika inwestycyjnego Keynesa i zastosowanie wyników estymacji do oceny wpływu inwestycji pogłębienia toru wodnego Szczecin-Świnoujście do 12,5 m na gospodarkę kraju. W artykule wykorzystano metody statystyczne estymacji punktowej i przedziałowej Neymana dla parametrów krzywej regresji liniowej konsumpcji na tle produktu krajowego brutto. Na podstawie danych statystyki publicznej (Rachunki Narodowe) oszacowano krańcową skłonność do konsumpcji, a następnie mnożnik inwestycyjny Keynesa. Określono przedziały ufności dla krańcowej skłonności do oszczędzania (MPC) i mnożnika inwestycyjnego, a następnie wykorzystano aktualne szacunki nakładów inwestycyjnych na pogłębienie toru wodnego Szczecin-Świnoujście zawarte w analizie korzyści- -kosztów dla przedmiotowej inwestycji. Ostatecznie wykazano z określonym a priori prawdopodobieństwem przedziały wzrostu wartości dodanej brutto w skali całej gospodarki wywołane inwestycją w pogłębienie toru wodnego Szczecin-Świnoujście do 12,5 m.
The aim of the paper is the proposal of the method of Keynesian investment multiplier estimation and the usage of estimation results to assessment how great an impact of deepening of the Szczecin-Swinoujscie fairway on Polish economy can be. Statistical point estimation and Neyman’s estimation by intervals have been used for the slope coefficient of linear regression between consumption and gross domestic product. IN the paper marginal propensity to consume and Keynesian investment multiplier have been estimated. Confidence intervals for marginal propensity to consume and Keynesian investment multiplier were determined as well. In order to assess an impact of deepening of the Szczecin-Swinoujscie fairway on GDP in Poland investment expenditure predicted were taken into consideration in the paper. Author took into account investment expenditure calculated in the cost-benefit analysis for the investment in question. FINALLY, confidence intervals for the increase of GDP in Poland induced by deepening of the Szczecin-Swinoujscie fairway to the technical depth of 12,5 m with given a priori probability were stated.

Commonly, the Park model is used to calculate transients or steady-state operations of synchronous machines. The expanded Park theory derives the Park equations from the phase-domain model of the synchronous machine by the use of transformations. Thereby, several hypothesis are made, which are under investigation in this article in respect to the main inductances of two different types of synchronous machines. It is shown, that the derivation of the Park equations from the phase-domain model does not lead to constant inductances, as it is usually assumed for these equations. Nevertheless the Park model is the most common analytic model of synchronous machines. Therefore, in the second part of this article a method using the evolution strategy is shown to obtain the parameters of the Park model.

The relative susceptibility of different accessions of Bambara groundnut (Vigna subterranean L. Verdc) to Callosobruchus maculatus (F.) was assessed in a laboratory trial in Nigeria. Treatments were comprised factorial combinations of four grain sources from Nigeria (Enugu, Anambra, Benue and Kogi state) and three predominantly contrasting seed coat colours (black, brown, and milky-colour) laid out in a completely randomized design (CRD). There were four replications of each treatment. Egg depositions by adult C. maculatus were affected by grain sources such that ovipositions on those sourced from the state of Anambra were significantly (p < 0.05) higher than those from other sources. Similarly, black coloured grains harboured more insects and eggs compared to other seed coat colours. Accesssions collected from Benue and/or those with a milky-coloured seed coat showed some levels of oviposition deterrence. However, the interaction of grain source and seed coat colour was not significant based on oviposition, adult emergence, and mortality counts. Grain sources and seed coat colour were, therefore, important traits to be considered while selecting ideotypes for resistance to C. maculatus.

The radiometric performance and burn rate of four spectral fare compositions (R-X) based on 1,4-dicyanobenzene (1), 3,5-dinitrobenzonitrile (2), E-stilbene (3) and 9,10-dihydroanthracene (4), potassium perchlorate and polyacrylate binder are described. The burn rates, spectral effciencies, Eλ, in both α- and β-band have been determined. The composition R-4 displays the highest effciency in both α- and β-band as well as lowest color ratio, θ B/A. R-1 yields the highest color ratio and second highest spectral effciency in β-band. For part IV see Ref. [1].

This paper presents numerical and semi-analytical solutions of oil velocity components and pressure distributions in spherical unsymmetrical gap of slide bearing. A hydrodynaŹmic unsteady lubrication during oil flow with viscoelastic properties is here considered. In the case of various driving systems on ships the bearings with spherical journals and spherical sleeves or slide bearings with spherical bits operate often under impulsive unsteady motions. Many impurities appearing in service leads to viscoelastic properties of the oil. During service of transport machines it is necessary to adjust the shaft location respective to the sleeve in order to make optimizing the convergent lubricating film possible. Such conditions are effectively satisfied in bearings with spherical journals. The presented numerical calculations were perforŹmed by means of the Mathcad 2000 Professional Program and the method of finite differences. This method satisfies stability conditions of numerical solutions of capacity forces occurring in spherical bearings.

However, during the design of a concept lattice, complexity plays a major role.
