Opis:
The article is an attempt at a chronological presentation of the most important old and complete translations of the Bible by the time and including the Protestant Reformation in both compared languages. As for the Dutch language, eight Biblical translations have been analysed with Protestant translations prevailing (5). On the other hand, Polish is represented by five old translations of the Scriptures with a slight advantage of Protestant translations (3) over Catholic ones (2). Translations of the Bible largely affected the language and the style of the Scriptures. It is worth emphasizing that they were most influenced by the Protestant Staatenbijbel (1637) in the then Netherlands and by the Jakub Wujek Bible (1599) in Poland.

Opis:
The author of this essay poses the question about the significance of antitrinitarian translations of the Bible into Polish for the exchange of ideas and achievements of science between Eastern and Western Europe in the second half of the sixteenth and first half of the seventeenth centuries. In an attempt to systematize various facets of this significance, the author will deal with the bibliographical and bibliological aspects of the editions of the Bible in the Polish language, the dynamics of the development of Polish antitrinitarian biblical translations and biblical editing against the background of the history of the Polish Brethren in the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, the sources of the translations and the influence they exercised in the territory of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and abroad. The author’s research made it possible to identify two directions of the exchange of ideas. The first direction is the reception in Central and Eastern Europe of the achievements of Western biblical philology and exegesis. The second is related to the Polish Brethren’s contribution to Western Europe’s science and culture. Particularly noteworthy here is the voice of Polish Antitrinitarians in the field of research into the criticism of the biblical text, although this impact was limited due to the language barrier. Of much greater importance were the translations of the Polish Brethren in the East (the Grand Duchy of Lithuania and the Muscovite lands), where the language barrier was less significant. They also popularized the philological and exegetical achievements of the West among the Karaites and Tatars of the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.

Opis:
The most important translations of the Bible into Polish, i.e. the Catholic Jakub Wujek Bible (1599) and the Protestant Gdańsk Bible (1632) were written at the end of the reformation period and were renewed and used in catholic churches and protestant communities until the first half of the 20th century. The reprints were systematically updated. In the 20th century the need to translate again the Holy Scripture into Polish was recognized. There were a few attempts at that in the second half of the previous century. They were always accompanied by heated debates which referred to the need of new translations as well the ways translators adopted to render in Polish selected books, sentences or even words. A religious text functions in a specific system of a higher level, i.e. religion. Religion is understood here as a culture text according to the Tartu-Moscow Semiotic School. Owing to this interpretation, religion has its own language built onto natural language. Text in natural language constitutes only a fragment of a bigger sign entity. To put it most simply, since a natural text is a subcomponent of a semiotic religious text, any change introduced in the former disrupts the coherence of cultural meaning on a higher level. Because of “a secondary modeling system” (a term coined by Yuri M. Lotman) the language of religious texts is always a bit archaic. This very modeling system prevents the propellers of modernization from a more thorough linguistic update of old biblical translations in Poland and, more often than not, does not let translators depart too far from the translation tradition.    Translated by Agnieszka Bryła-Cruz

Autor ukazuje specyfikę ekumenicznego przekładu Biblii na język polski na tle najważniejszych ekumenicznych projektów przekładowych na inne języki. Bazę źródłową dla badań stanowiły głównie wstępy do Biblii ekumenicznych w językach obcych oraz nigdy niepublikowane archiwalia pochodzące z Towarzystwa Biblijnego w Polsce.
The author shows the peculiarities of the ecumenical translation of the Bible into Polish against the background of the most important ecumenical translation projects into other languages. The aim of the research was to present the features of Polish inter-confessional translation. The author presented the history of earlier inter-Christian translations of the Bible into Polish, the team-committee method in the work on the translation of the Bible and its impact on ecumenism and the achieved effect. The research followed a historical method based on use of introductions to ecumenical Bibles in foreign languages and on never published archives from the Bible Society in Poland. Another group of sources are recension and papers on the ecumenical Bible. The results of the studies carried out similarities and differences between the foreign ecumenical translations and the Polish edition; the specificity of the polish biblical style of the ecumenical Bible; the reasons for such a late appearance of the Polish ecumenical Bible.

The paper is an attempt at the synthetic look into this part of Polish bible translation heritage, whose integral part are the translations of the Bible in Protestant circles. The fundamental thesis of the work is based on the statement that Protestant translations of the Bible into Polish contributed substantially to its quantitative and qualitative evolution, as well as constitute one of the main sources of the development of the biblical stylistic variant of Polish. The greatest attention has been paid to the role and significance of Polish Bible translations in this process, which were made in the times of Reformation and Counter-Reformation, as well as to the attempt at indicating some links that appeared between the most important Catholic and Protestant translations of this period. The paper provides numerous references to previous views on the investigated issues, and provides a range of new suggestions, e.g. a periodization of the history of biblical Polish language, as well as indicates the need for further work in this field.

The author of this article presents issues connected with the collection, compilation of and use of sources for the history of the so-called Warsaw Bible, published for the first time by the British and Foreign Biblical Society in 1975. Up until now, nobody had attempted to compile the history of the translation of the Bible. Nobody had tried to collect and develop sources for its history, either. Th e author discusses, in turn, the issues connected with Warsaw Bible editions, archival documents concerning its history, interviews with living witnesses to the events, reviews and scientific publications referring to this very Bible. He then presents the methodology of work with these sources. The aim of this article is to kindle a flame of interest among theological circles in Poland in research on the history of the Warsaw Bible, which will celebrate its Golden Jubilee in 2025.

Opis:
The article presents the new ecumenical polish translation of the Scripture and focuses on its original aspects. The author of the article translated the books of Qohelet and Song of Songs in the Ecumenical Bible. The main newness in the book of Qohelet was a translation of the motto of the book. The traditional “vanity of vanities” was interpreted according to the Hebrew etymology connected with wind and vapor, using at the same time an adjectival form. Literally it could be expressed in English: “evanescent, how evanescent – says Qohelet – everything is so evanescent”. Another newness is the interpretation of the Hebrew re’ut ruach as “similar to the wind” based on the interpretation of the word re’ut in connection with the verbal root resh-ayin-hei. Also we propose, on the base of some semantic and intertextual analyses, a new interpretation of the passage considered misogynic of Qoh 7,27-28: “Behold, I have discovered this, says Qohelet, comparing one women with another to find an explanation. I am not able to understand even the one whom I love with all my heart. I am able to understand one man among a thousand, but I am not able to understand any woman among all these”. In the translation of the Song of Songs, instead of the traditional marginal notes “bride” and “bridegroom” introducing the speeches of different characters, we choose simply “she” and “he”.

Opis:
This article refers to problems which have not been addressed so far and which concern the origin, frame and structure of titles and sub-titles in Polish editions of the Bible. It also explains and orders terminological issues.  Titles had had appeared for the first time in nineteenth-century Polish translations of the Bible whereas their regular occurrence started in 1945.   There are two purposes of the Bible titles: practical and interpretative ones thanks to which  readers can easily find easy and interpret a given fragment of the Bible. Professing traditions makes titles to be repetitive forms built on the same basis to a great extent. That is why Bible titles are characterized by the lack of individuality, rare use of metaphors and the use of firm word-connections (often in the form of idiomatic combinations). Apart from that, titles are used: 1.strictly with reference to Bible tales,2. to summarize the content of stories,3. in quotation forms.  Nominal forms – in the form of sentence equivalents – dominate in grammatical structures of the titles. Verbal forms - in the form of single or complex sentences – are used  rarely.  The Bible titles are present in common consciousness of each human being. The symbolics of the Bible nomenclature is very often exploited in art, a fact which proves the popularity of the Bible titles.

The lexis was selected from ten Gospels translated into Polish in the 16th century.

Biblia gdańska
Opis:
In a verse of Act 23,23 in Biblia gdańska (1632) translated by Daniel Mikołajewski, an equivalent of Greek lexeme δεξιόλαβος ‘probably a spearman or slinger’, the noun drabant is used, which is unique, compared to its counterpart – oszczepnik – in Biblia translated by JakubWujek (1599). It may have been borrowed from the Czech language in the second half of the 16th century. In the Polish language of the time it was not a very widespread lexeme, maybe of erudite nature. It appeared in the text of Biblia gdańska taken from the Czech Biblia kralicka. Among Protestants at that time, as a military term, it could have evoked associations with the religious Hussite Wars. The lexeme drabant survived in the biblical text of the Evangelist circles until the second half of the twentieth century. Given the fact that in that century it was already an archaic word, it was not used in new testament translations which followed the translational tradition of Biblia gdańska. And probably it became fixed in the consciousness of the faithful of Evangelist churches as a memorable reminder of the past. For centuries that lexeme, along with other lexemes characteristic of Biblia gdańska caused lexical distinctiveness of that Evangelist translation compared to the Catholic translation by Jakub Wujek.
