The subject of the article is the review of the book Jubilee and modern. The Cyrillo-Methodian narrative during socialism in Bulgaria by the Polish-Bulgarian scholar Ewelina Drzewiecka (2020). Her monograph is an analysis of the jubilee editions dedicated to the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius and their disciples which were published in socialist Bulgaria. The author’s aim is to trace “the Cyrillo-Methodian story” and turn it into a key for understanding the Bulgarian collective memory for the period between 1944 and the1980s. E. Drzewiecka uses Mary Douglas’ theoretical formulations of the history of ideas and the anthropology of institutions as well as Jan and Aleida Assmann’s concept of cultural memory.

The paper offers an analysis of various public representations of Argentina’s recent past from the perspective of a Queer Philosophy of History. It contends that this approach offers valuable tools to look into how and why we shape our past like we do, what comes as the “mess” that historical narratives often try to “tidy up,” how they achieve this, and how all of this relates to our present interests. With this aim, the paper describes and analyzes different mechanisms that are put into play when producing representations of the liminal events that shook Argentina in the 1970s, focusing specifically on the ways in which those who were part of the resistance against State terrorism tend to be selected, presented and described. In its conclusions, it suggests reading these practices of public memory as cases of political anxiety, rethinking them through the potential offered by a queer perspective.

Debate about the possibilities of using interdisciplinary methods in investigations of labor and concentration camps of world war two is well embedded. In this cases, the archaeology is a mixture of sub-disciplines like Combat Archaeology, War Archaeology and Interment Archaeology as well as a Public Archaeology. Field researches, especially non-invasives ones are common practices. In recent years numerous archeological research project has taken place. Some of them were prepared for the investment activities and design of memorials and new museums. The main purpose of documentation, surveys, and excavation of this kind of sites is a preservation of architectural relicts and landscape, but also a supplementing the historical knowledge by authentic archaeological sources. In this paper, authors decided to present the results of archaeological research project prepared in 2016 by The Historical Museum of the City of Kraków (MHK) and the investigations of Rabbinical Commission for Jewish Cemeteries in the area of labor and concentration camp Plaszow. The archeological documentation and investigations were combined with extensive research and study of memorial sites in Poland and Europe, which served as the basis for the scenario of the exhibition and commemoration of KL Plaszow as a future memorial site’s institution

This paper discusses recent advancements in the context of modern conflict archaeology in the woodlands. One aspect of this development of archaeological research is a broad use and application of airborne laser scanning (ALS). Material remains of a forced labour camp and munitions depot in the forests around Gutowiec (Poland) known as Guttowitz 35 are used as a case study. After approaching prisoners’ memories concerning the site, the results of ALS combined with the outcomes of fieldwalking at the site are presented. This article tries to back up the following thesis: due to applications of non-invasive methods (e.g. ALS, fieldwalking), archaeology is able to offer a deeper understanding and contextualization of such sites as Guttowiec 35: a fresh insight into the materiality of conflict landscapes from the recent past in the woodlands.

This paper is a case study of a prisoner of war and internment camp in Tuchola (Kujawsko-Pomorskie Province, Poland). The camp operated between 1914 and 1923. During the First World War it was run by Germans and later, during the Polish-Soviet War, by the Poles. The site provides a context for discussing two issues around archaeological research of the recent past. The first issue is how archaeology can be used to analyse the transformations of landscapes related to modern armed conflicts. The second point deals with the documentation and analysis of the remains of the camp using ALS derivatives. The main conclusion of this paper is that LiDAR technology can be also a useful tool in the context of approaching landscapes from the recent past.

Opis:
Writing, signing and carving names in public spaces are popular ways of indicating somebody’s presence in the world. Various inscriptions made in different places have been appearing from the ancient times until today. There are multiple motivations for such practice: a simple signing to indicate somebody’s presence, a declaration of sympathy or antipathy to some idea or person or political manifests and encouragement to engage in some actions. Despite the popularity of such phenomenon and its long duration, archaeologists, especially those involved in studying the recent or contemporary past, are not particularly focused on researching this source of knowledge. Most of the academic works which concern inscriptions and graffiti are conducted by sociologists or visual culture specialists. However, these sources may be truly significant in studying microhistories of the places and people. Thus, in our article we want to present a unique potential of graffiti in the studies related to the recent and contemporary past. The aim of our article is to show various spatial contexts in which graffiti may be encountered and to present how the archaeology of the contemporary past may take advantage of researching such inscriptions. After Laurent Olivier (2001), we think that discovering the local past is a characteristic feature of the archaeology of the contemporary past and our article aims to show how the specific “being” of graffiti around us may contribute to discovering the microhistories of people and places. According to Michael Bell’s concept (1997), we interpret graffiti as “the ghosts of place” which indicate the presence of those who are no longer in the place. Due to the breadth of topics connected with graffiti, we decided to focus on those inscriptions which manifest someone’s presence in the place, narrowing our studies only to its written form (not graphic).

The paper presents the images of rural life in Subcarpathian regions of the 19th century Eastern Galicia, recorded in sociocultural, quasi‑chronicle, or memoir prose of Juliusz Turczyński (1833–1913). This gymnasium professor and a well‑known writer connected with Stanisławów achieved his greatest success as the author of novellas and short stories. His socio‑cultural, ethnographic and landscape sketches dedicated to Hutsul Land, which record the traditional life ofthe region, disappearing because of modern trends, belong to the most important literary testimonies of life and mentality of the 19th century Carpathian Highlanders. His less popular, but equally interesting dramatized sociological studies, illustrate the situation of Eastern Galician village in the serfdom era that has recently passed. Turczyński’s prose, which is rather conventional and schematic in terms of artistic creation, combines the objective features of a document – the testimony of the mechanisms determining and destroying the life of a simple man – with the elements of didactic morality and parabolic vison of a lively character of the people, prone to fall, but also to convert.

The aim of this paper is to describe population ageing in member countries of the European Union and its dynamics in the period 1990-2030. Furthermore, we show chosen social consequences and challenges caused by demographic ageing. In the introduction, we present definition of the population ageing and describe measures used in the paper. The analytical part consists of three sections. The first one is about growth of older population (at the age of 65 and over, and 80 and over) in the years 1990-2030. The next one comprises an evaluation of progress in demographic change in the EU countries, which is based on chosen measures of population structure - aging index (population 65 and over to population 0-14), and potential support ratio (population 15-64 years to population 65 and over). In the analysis, we use also positional measures. The last part focuses on explaining regional differences in progress of demographic ageing of particular countries. The last section of the paper focuses on chosen socioeconomic consequences of ageing in the EU countries. One of them is an expected increase in number of disabled people. Another one is growth in the number of single person households of the elderly, who need familial and extra-familial care.

Opis:
For many centuries, scientists, philosophers, artists and others have been fascinated with ruins. However, this fascination usually focused upon ancient and medieval relics. Indeed, it can be metaphorically said that archaeology was built upon ruins. Nonetheless, the archaeological analyses of ruins, their functions, meanings, uses and re-uses over the next centuries had been very selective. In short, modern ruins have been out of closer archaeological attention. It seems as if modern ruins were deprived of social, cultural, and archaeological dimensions. However, this changed during the first decade of the 21st century when archaeologists started to pay attention to the modern ruins. The so-called archaeology of (modern) ruins is one of the most interesting, provocative, and subversive fields of the contemporary archaeological discourses. The starting point of this paper is that there is no “ontological difference” between the Greek, the Roman and the Soviet ruins. All of them can and should be part of archaeological thinking. A two-step approach is applied here. First, the archaeological value of ruins in Chernobyl is discussed. A documentary entitled Czarnobyl – Wstęp Wzbroniony (2015) (Eng. Chernobyl – No Entry) is reviewed to highlight the processes of transformation of the unimaginable nuclear catastrophe into valuable heritage of the recent past. It is argued that Chernobyl can be seen as “Pompeii of our times”. Second, the review of Czarnobyl – Wstęp Wzbroniony is used as a pretext to shortly present different categories of modern ruins that one can encounter in contemporary Poland. Many of them are related with the Soviet occupation in Poland between 1945 and 1993. The point that I try to back up in this paper is that these Soviet ruins are also part of the archaeological heritage of the recent past. Accordingly, this paper is a call for a closer archaeological interest in the ruins of the recent past in general.

Opis:
For several years, regular archaeological excavations have been conducted in the Forest of Lućmierz near Zgierz in Central Poland. They focused on searching for the collective graves of hundreds Poles executed by Nazi Germans in Zgierz in 1942, and the location and exhumation of the contents of burial graves from 1939–1940, in which the remains of victims of the German Inteligenzaktion were originally hidden. In both cases, the main difficulty for the researchers was the fact that the Germans carried out actions to erase the traces of the crime, consisting in the cremation of the remains of the victims extracted from the grave. Unclear information regarding exhumations, which was provided by the new Polish administration in the spring of 1045, did not facilitate the research either. The archival inquiry and archaeological research did not answer all the questions. Therefore, in 2014, some ethnographic interviews with the residents of the towns located around the Forest of Lućmierz were carried out. The article cites extensive fragments of the interlocutors’ statements, which have been commented on from the point of view of the needs of the archaeological research.

Artykuł podejmuje problematykę tzw. trudnego dziedzictwa z perspektywy koncepcji teoretycznej określanej w literaturze mianem biografii rzeczy. W pierwszej części tekstu omawiam polskie badania w ramach archeologii współczesności nad trudnym dziedzictwem. Następnie szkicuję bliżej założenia biograficznego podejścia do badania relacji między ludźmi, rzeczami i miejscami. Ostatnia część pracy to studium przypadku, w którym krótko prezentuję biografie trzech przedmiotów pochodzących z terenu pierwszowojennego obozu jenieckiego w Czersku – obiektu niewątpliwie będącego przykładem trudnego dziedzictwa.
This paper discusses the concept of difficult/dark heritage from a theoretical perspective known as the biography of things. First, I analyse Polish archaeological research on difficult/dark heritage. Second, I describe in greater detail the biography of things as a tool for studying relationships between people, things and places. The last part of the paper is a case study presenting the biographies of three objects found in the grounds of a prisoner-of-war camp in Czersk. I aim to prove the following theses: 1) archaeologies of the recent past cannot be understood simply as the archaeology of martyrdom; 2) material culture from the recent past allows us to create different kinds of narratives connected with dark heritage.

The authors developed a political economy equilibrium framework for personal income distribution. In the beginning, they set up a theoretical model which was rooted in status theory. With this concept, one may explain a certain or optimal degree of inequality in society and define a steady state to which inequality can converge. By taking the aggregated Gini coefficient due to a collective decision process, deviations from the steady state due to shocks are allowed. A return to equilibrium is feasible with speed which is compatible with the collective decisionmaking process. The authors then conducted an empirical analysis of personal income distribution in 28 European nations for the period before, during and after the great recession of 2009/2010 and the Euro crisis of 2010/2015 (1995–2019). Not surprisingly, they found inequality convergence in the data. However, the speed of convergence is not the same for all countries.

Stosowane w Polsce zasady dokumentowania złóż i klasyfikacji zasobów sformułowane zostały na początku lat 50. XX w. W latach następnych były one modyfikowane i uściślane. W krajach o zdecydowanej gospodarce rynkowej potrzebę formalizacji zasad dokumentowania złóż dostrzeżono na przełomie lat 80. i 90. XX w. i ujęto je w kodeksie JORC.
Polish system of reporting exploration results and resources classification was established at the beginning o second half of XX-th century for the needs of central planned economy. It was modified and improved in following years. In the countries of market economy the necessity of commonly accepted formalized rules of reporting resources data was noticed about 30 years later and the JORC Code was compiled. The backgrounds and the mode of reporting exploration results and resources according to JORC Code and polish system are comparable. Since the half of XX th century the mode of exploration and presentation of exploration results has subsequently changed. The basic transformation begins since the end of XX-th century due to computerization. However the common use of computer based mode of deposit modeling is menaced by too formalized approach, not geologically justified. The exigencies imposed on reporting of exploration results and data on mineral resources are defined in Geological and Mining Law. Incorrectly formulated legal statements make difficult correct exploration and presentation and of its results.

Opis:
Time-symmetric formulation of quantum mechanics—the two-state vector formalism—is presented as a tool for studying past behaviour of quantum systems. A role of weak measurement and weak values in the Cheshire Cat effect and a nested (Vaidman) three-path interferometer are discussed. Interpretation of a particle’s faint trace indicating possibility of discontinuous paths of particles passing the Vaidman interferometer is given. Consistent histories are presented as one of alternative approaches. Multitude of controversial issues is briefly reviewed and discussed.

Opis:
The article looks at treatments of Poland’s 20th-century history in Polish films made over the last several years. Since 2007, Polish cinema has seen an explosion of films dealing in various ways with the history of the last century. These include mega-productions by directors known for making historically themed films, like Wajda’s Katyń or Hoffman’s 1920. Battle of Warsaw, and traditional historical dramas dealing with iconic personalities (Rafał Wieczyński’s Popiełuszko. Freedom Is Within Us) and moments in time (Antoni Krauze’s Black Thursday. Janek Wiśniewski Fell). However, a number of other works make use of historical settings from the last century in new and innovative ways. Most choose smaller-scale, less grand approaches to the past, though without abandoning an ambition to accurately depict the times they portray. Films focused on issues related to family and personal relationships, such as Jan Kidawa-Błoński’s Little Rose or Borys Lankosz’s Reverse, likewise speak about life during communism, but attempt to do so without repeating clichéd images by engaging new problems or returning to familiar ones using new techniques. Lastly, memory often plays an important role as a source of knowledge about the past, and as a filter for mediating experiences of it. This can be best seen in Rafael Lewandowski’s The Mole, Władysław Pasikowski’s Consequences (Pokłosie), and Wojciech Smarzowski’s Dark House. Archival evidence, memories of relatives, and the camera itself are used in the films to pose questions about the subjectivity inherent to film as a means of learning about the past.
