Opis:
The following article describes the possible simplification of the calculating procedure concerning the amount of the air required for the combustion process of the marine low speed engine. An analysis of the miscalculation factor has been based on the amount of the fuel oil and cylinder oil consumption and amount of the waste oil generated by marine engine under the real ambient and engine operation conditions.

Opis:
The article compares combined systems in naval applications. The object of the analysis is the combined gas turbine/steam turbine system which is compared to the combined marine low-speed Diesel engine/steam turbine system. The comparison refers to the additional power and efficiency increase resulting from the use of the heat in the exhaust gas leaving the piston engine or the gas turbine. In the analysis a number of types of gas turbines with different exhaust gas temperatures and two large-power low-speed piston engines have been taken into account. The comparison bases on the assumption about comparable power ranges of the main engine.

Opis:
Two-stroke, low-speed diesel engines are widely used in large ships due to their good performance and fuel economy. However, there have been few studies of the effects of lubricating oils on the vibration of two-stroke, low-speed diesel engines. In this work, the effects of three different lubricating oils on the vibration characteristics of a low-speed engine are investigated, using the frequency domain, time-frequency domain, fast Fourier transform (FFT) and short-time Fourier transform (STFT) methods. The results show that non-invasive condition monitoring of the wear to a cylinder liner in a low-speed marine engine can be successfully achieved based on vibration signals. Both the FFT and STFT methods are capable of capturing information about combustion in the cylinder online in real time, and the STFT method also provides the ability to visualise the results with more comprehensive information. From the online condition monitoring of vibration signals, cylinder lubricants with medium viscosity and medium alkali content are found to have the best wear protection properties. This result is consistent with those of an elemental analysis of cylinder lubrication properties and an analysis of the data measured from a piston lifted from the cylinder after 300 h of engine operation.

Opis:
The piston engine irregularity is a consequence of the uneven power supply from the engine units. As such, it contains valuable information about engines units working process. Unfortunately, it is strongly influenced by torsional vibration, resonance, and propeller behaviour. In order to better understand the speed irregularity phenomena the instantaneous speed was recorded and its characteristic against engine mean speed was developed. Some statistical parameters: standard error and deviation as well as variance were determined. The results were compared with propulsion plant torsional vibration. The presented results show that the irregularity of the long stroke engine's speed is strongly influenced by torsional vibration phenomena. The analyzed engine has a bared speed range 37-43 rpm. Exactly around that range, the speed irregularity reaches its maximum values of 18% of mean speed. The analysis can be considered as qualitative look into the phenomena. However even based on the presented analysis one can observe some practical inferences. The common type of electronic indicators is used to simplify the measurement by assuming that the shaft speed is equal in between the pickup pulses. In order to increase the accuracy of the indicated power determination the use of such instrument should be avoided in the speed range, which is a multiple number of the barred speed. Due to the fact that the shaft speed is irregular especially in the ranges where torsional resonance may occur the piston positioning (for example for TDC determination) purpose procedure should take it into account.

Opis:
With the implementation and expansion of international sulfur emission control areas, effectively promoted the marine low sulfur diesel fuel (MLSDF) used in marine diesel engines. In this study, a large low-speed, two-stroke, cross-head, common rail, electronic fuel injection marine diesel engine (B&W 6S35ME-B9) was used for the study. According to diesel engine’s propulsion characteristics, experiments were launched respectively at 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% load working conditions with marine low sulfur diesel fuel to analyze the fuel consumption, combustion characteristics and emissions (NOx, CO2 , CO, HC) characteristics. The results showed that: Marine diesel engine usually took fuel injection after top dead center to ensure their safety control NOx emission. From 25% to 75% load working condition, engine’s combustion timing gradually moved forward and the inflection points of pressure curve after top dead center also followed forward. While it is necessary to control pressure and reduce NOx emission by delaying fuel injection timing at 100% load. Engine’s in-cylinder pressure, temperature, and cumulative heat release were increased with load increasing. Engine’s CO2 and HC emissions were significantly reduced from 25% to 75% load, while they were increased slightly at 100% load. Moreover, the fuel consumption rate had a similar variation and the lowest was only 178 g/kW·h at 75% load of the test engine with MLSDF. HC or CO emissions at four tests’ working conditions were below 1.23 g/kW·h and the maximum difference was 0.2 or 0.4 g/kW·h respectively, which meant that combustion efficiency of the test engine with MLSDF is good. Although the proportion of NOx in exhaust gas increased with engine’s load increasing, but NOx emissions were always between 12.5 and 13.0 g/kW·h, which was less than 14.4 g/kW·h. Thus, the test engine had good emissions performance with MLSDF, which could meet current emission requirements of the International Maritime Organization.

Opis:
The paper describes the design of compression rings used in low-speed, high power marine engines and it analyses relations between the most important operational parameters. Ring material, dimensions, geometry of sliding surfaces, distribution of circumferential pressure as well as operational conditions (thermal and mechanical loads, way of lubrication) were taken into consideration for the analysis mentioned above. Moreover, the paper points at modifications in ring geometry that have been happening for last years, comparing previous and recent designs. The effect of ring circumferential pressure against liner on the piston-cylinder assembly operation has been considered and the causes of its variability have been pointed out as well. When presenting the methods of measurement and tangential force calculations basic advantages and disadvantages have been presented as well as the evaluation of changes resulting from the ring circumferential wear. The compression ring mathematical model developed by the authors allows for a precise definition of relations between ring geometry and distribution of ring circumferential pressure. A need for a more accurate method of ring circumferential pressure evaluation has been justified in summary, giving hints necessaryfor its preparation.
