The main characteristic of aluminosilicate glass cenospheres and their possible use as a component of magnesium matrix composites were presented. The results revealed that particular parts of cenospheres differ insignificantly from each other and it depends on which power plant cenospheres come from. The characteristic of cenospheres concerned their structure and phase composition and dimensions such as: wall thickness and size of pores occurring in walls, depending on cenospheres origin. Thickness of cenospheres walls and pore size were measured by using ImageJ computer software. The structure of aluminosilicate glass cenospheres and their phase composition have been investigated by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The possibility of cenospheres utilization in the fabrication of magnesium matrix composites was presented on the example of AZ91 magnesium alloy composite with fly ash cenospheres. Composite was fabricated by pressure infiltration method.

In the paper the microstructures of WE43 matrix composites reinforced with carbon fibres have been characterised. The influence of reinforcement type and T6 heat treatment (a solution treatment at 525°C for 8 h, a hot water quench and a subsequent ageing treatment at 250°C for 16 h) on microstructure have been evaluated. The light microscope and scanning electron microscope investigations have been carried out. No significant differences in samples reinforced with non-coated textiles have been reported. The substantial changes in sample reinforced with nickel-coated textile have been observed. The segregation of alloying elements to the matrix-reinforcement layer has been identified. The T6 heat treatment caused the appearance of disperse precipitates of β phase, but the process cannot be considered as satisfactory (irregular distribution, low volume fraction, relatively large size).

This paper studies new magnesium metal matrix composites (Mg MMCs) reinforced with SiC particles by the stir-casting method for MMCs tubes hot extrusion. AZ61/SiCp MMCs' ingots reinforced with 0, 0.5 and 1 wt.% SiC particles are fabricated by the melt-stirring technique. AZ61/SiCp MMCs' tubes are manufactured by hot extrusion using a specially designed die-set. Obvious grain size refinement both by addition of particles and extrusion process are discovered. However, the grain refinement effect caused by extrusion process is much significant than that effect caused by SiC particle addition. The 0.2% yield strength (YS) of extruded tubes of AZ61 and AZ61/1 wt.% SiCp MMCs (without and with T5 treatment) are increased by 140.9-161.9% and 156.5-156.7%, respectively, compared with those of as-cast billets.

Opis:
Magnesium-based MMCs are widely used in structural-based applications due to their lightweight, high hardness, corrosion and wear resistance. Also, machining is an important manufacturing process that is necessary to ensure dimensional accuracy and produce intricate shapes. In this context, the machining of Magnesium based metal matrix composites is undertaken to study the impact of the cutting parameters on the machinability behaviour. In this work, turning of pure Mg/SiCp on a Lathe is done and an in-depth assessment on the machining forces, machined surface quality, chip microstructure, and tool morphology has been carried out using TiAlN coated tooling insert. The analysis revealed that the thrust force decreased due to the thermal softening of the matrix meanwhile the feed force also followed the similar trend at higher cutting speeds because of the minimized built-up edge and cutting depth whereas principal cutting force was inconsistent at higher cutting speeds. The surface finish was better at high cutting speed - low feed combination. The chip microstructure revealed that gross fracture propagation at the free surface and variations in the shear bands have occurred at different cutting speeds. Tool studies using SEM analysis revealed wear modes like chipping and built-up edge at low cutting speeds, but with a reduced impact at intermediate cutting conditions, whereas abrasion wear was observed predominantly in the tool nose at higher cutting speeds.

The preliminary results of the application of open-celled glassy-carbon foam (Cof) in magnesium matrix composites processed by the powder metallurgy method were presented. For the component consolidation, compaction with vertically-torsional vibration and hot-pressing were applied. For the material characterization, the microstructure examination LM and SEM with EDS was employed and also, the porosity and microhardness were measured. An influence of the carbon foam cells’ size on the composite porosity and microhardness was revealed. Additionally, a generation of a few micrometer thin and differently shaped MgO inclusions was observed. Differences in the oxide phase amount, size and shape in the magnesium matrix measured by the quantitative metallography method in the cross-sectioned composite elements were stated. With an increase of the distance from the composite roller top, an increase of the MgO content and microhardness was noticed.

Magnesium Metal Matrix Composites (Mg MMC) have been the focus of consideration by many researchers for the past few years. Many applications of Mg MMCs were evolved in less span of time in the automotive and aerospace sector to capture the benefit of high strength to weight ratio along with improved corrosion resistance. However, the performance of these materials in critical conditions is significantly influenced by several factors including the fabrication methods used for processing the composites. Most of the papers addressed all the manufacturing strategies of Mg MMC but no paper was recognized as a dedicated source for magnesium composites prepared through STIR casting process. Since STIR casting is the least expensive and most common process in the preparation of composites, this paper reviews particulate based Mg MMCs fabricated with STIR casting technology. AZ91 series alloys are considered as the matrix material while the effect of different particle reinforcements, sizes, weight fractions on mechanical and tribological responses are elaborated in support with micro structural examinations. Technical difficulties and latest innovations happened during the last decade in making Mg MMCs as high performance material are also presented.

NiTi alloys are successfully used in engineering and medical applications because of their properties, such as shape memory effect, superelasticity or mechanical strength. A composite with Mg matrix, due to its vibration damping properties, can be characterized by low weight and good vibration damping properties. In this study, a combination of two techniques was used for successful fabrication of Mg composite reinforced by NiTi alloy preform. The porous preforms synthesized by Self-propagating Hightemperature Synthesis (SHS) from elemental powders were subsequently infiltrated with Mg by squeeze casting. The effects were examined with scanning electron microscope with EDS detector, X-ray diffraction and microindentation. The inspection has shown well-connected matrix and reinforcement; no reaction at the interface and open porosities fully infiltrated by liquid Mg. Moreover, analysis of samples’ fracture has exhibited that crack propagates inside the Mg matrix and there is no detachment of reinforcement.

Opis:
In the current study, wear performance of pure magnesium (Mg) and composite fabricated with titanium carbide (TiC) reinforcement is investigated under various loading and sliding velocity conditions. The Mg-matrix composite is prepared by friction stir processing (FSP) carried out at optimized values of process parameters. Sliding wear tests on Mg and friction stir processed (FSPed) Mg+TiC surface composite were done on pin-on-disc configuration. The consequence of the normal load applied and sliding velocity on wear behaviour of the two materials is evaluated by performing the tests at two normal loads of 6 N and 12 N and three sliding speeds of 0.5 m/s, 1.5 m/s and 4.5 m/s. FSPed composite found to exhibit an enhanced wear resistance as compared to that of pure Mg. To get an insight into the possible types of mechanisms for wear of the composites sample under varying load and sliding speeds conditions, the worn test specimens are subjected to scanning electron microscopy (SEM). SEM/EDS analysis revealed that oxidation, ploughing, trailing edge and 3-body abrasive wear were the predominant mechanisms for the wear of samples at a different set of experimental conditions. The tensile strength of the FSPed surface composite was found to be 25% higher than pure Mg. Wear resistance was found to increase by about 33%.

Opis:
Two types of composites, consisting of pure magnesium matrix reinforced with two commercially used carbon fibers, were systematically studied in this paper. The composites fabricated by the pressure infiltration method, were subjected to quasistatic and dynamic compression tests. Morphology of fiber strands was observed using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The application of carbon fibre reinforcement led to the stiffening of tested materials, resulting in the limitation of the possible compression to approx. 2.5%. The performed tests revealed the remarkable difference in compression strength of investigated compositions. The cause of that effect was that GRANOC fiber reinforced composite exhibited insufficient bond quality between the brittle fibers and the ductile matrix. T300 reinforced composite presented good connection between reinforcement and matrix resulting in increased mechanical properties. Investigated composites demonstrated higher mechanical strength during deformation at high strain rates. Microscopic observations also proved that the latter fibers with regular shape and dense packaging within the filaments are proper reinforcement when designing the lightweight composite material.

The article presents the history and current state of the technology of external pressure casting in the case of High Pressure Die Casting (HPDC) and Squeeze Casting (SC). The similarities and differences between the two technologies and the common areas that were used in the construction of modern hybrid machines combining the features of HPDC and SC were shown. Recent years have seen the development of pressure machine designs that have enabled the hybridisation of technologies with high flexibility of the process, consisting in the choice of such a method of applying external pressure in which its influence can be more effectively used as a thermodynamic factor. The following experiments were presented in the field of liquid and solid-liquid casting, obtained from research conducted at the Foundry Research Institute in Kraków.

Opis:
The microstructure and microhardness of a ball milled and hot pressed aluminium powder with 10 vol.% of magnesium nitride (Mg3N2) were investigated. It was expected that the addition of a Mg3N2 as an nitrogen-bearing substrate would allow to obtain an in situ reaction leading to a formation of an aluminium nitride (AlN) strenghtening phase. The powders were milled in a high energy planetary ball mill for up to 40 h and then compacted in vacuum at 400ºC/600 MPa. The material was investigated by means of X-ray diffraction measurements (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and microhardness tests. The performed investigations showed that the composite preparation method provided a significant structure refinement of the material - the average matrix grain size of composite compact was about ˜140 nm. Energy Dispersive Spectrometry (EDS) analysis of Al/ Mg3N2 compact combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) technique indicated a presence of Mg3N2 as well as Mg-Al-O phase, which were probably formed during hot pressing. Microhardness tests showed nearly 40% increase in the hardness of Al/ Mg3N2 composite over the non-reinforced aluminium compact.
W niniejszej pracy przedstawiono wyniki obserwacji mikrostruktury i pomiarów mikrotwardości kompozytu o osnowie z aluminium z dodatkiem 10% objętościowych azotku magnezu wytworzonego drogą wysokoenergetycznego mielenia połączonego z prasowaniem na gorąco.
