Opis:
Twenty-six healthy men and women participated in this study in which 14 were long distance runners and remaining were control subjects. Following the initial assessment of foot pressure distribution, the runners were asked to complete the regular training program. Immediately after the run, foot pressure distribution was again assessed using the Zebris FDM-Treadmill. The parameters were analysed and compared with the pre-training data. The same parameters were also assessed for the control group at rest. Paired t-test was used to compare the foot pressure distribution before and after the run. Independent t-test was used to compare the same parameters between runners and control group. No significant changes were observed in runners post run whereas the control group showed significant changes in the foot pressure distribution of right forefoot and backfoot when compared to long distance runners at rest. The findings of the study suggest that the foot pressure distribution is not affected acutely after the long distance running. The future studies could analyse the plantar pressure measurement throughout the training programs to detect the time and nature of the deviations linked to long distance run, which would help in injury prevention.

Opis:
Popularity of long-distance running has increased as well as number of female and male marathon runners. Whilst research into physiological characteristics of endurance trained athletes has significantly increased there are only few studies on the risk factors for respiratory failure in marathon runners. Therefore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the differences in respiratory function and the physiological strain in the response to exercise stress in marathon runners. Twenty three subjects (aged 36.1 ±11.6 years) participated in a marathon running. Prior to the run and after its completion, body mass and composition, spirometry and body temperature were measured. Based on pre- and post-run temperature and changes in heart rate, the physiological strain index (PSI) was calculated. Long-distance running significantly decreased the temperature of body surfaces (p < 0.05); no significant effects were observed regarding aural canal temperature and physiological strain index (PSI). Compared to resting values, post-marathon spirometry revealed a significant decrease in post-marathon forced expiratory volume (p < 0.05), peak expiratory flow (p < 0.05) and maximal expiratory flow values (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the long-distance running results in functional changes within the respiratory system which may limit the adaptive potential and decrease exercise tolerance.

Prolonged running has been popularized globally in recent decades. This study was aimed to reveal information about foot morphology, shoe comfort and plantar loading among recreational heel-strike runners. Methods: Twenty-six runners participated in foot morphology, perceived scores and peak pressure tests after 10- and 20-km track running. The foot morphology was measured using a 3D foot scanner, perceived scores were recorded using a visual analogue scale and plantar pressure was measured via insole plantar pressure measurement system. The statistical significance level was set at 0.05. Results: The heel midsole materials properties were measured before and after 20 km. Significant changes were observed in ball width and girth, arch height and foot volume. The perceived scores showed significance in overall, forefoot and heel comfort, arch support and forefoot width. Peak pressure to the heel, medial mid-foot and metatarsal greatly increased. The first metatarsal showed consecutive increase from static to 10 km, and 20 km, while big-toe showed a decrease. Conclusions: The morphology variations and forefoot loading concentration may lead to discomfort and possibly imply dermatological problems and metatarsal bone stress, particularly on the first metatarsal. Combining changes of heel midsole property, knowledge of foot shape, shoe perception and plantar pressure is of great value for recreational long-distance running shoes design and materials selection.

The aim of the study is to determine motivation of runners from Poland and the Czech Republic in the context of their participation in running competitions. In this study, correlations between age, experience, training period and motives for participation in the competition by comparing the cross-country runners from both countries was researched. The study examined the place of health in the structure of motives. The study involved 847 runners from Poland and 118 from the Czech Republic. The method of a diagnostic survey was carried out using questionnaires. Competition with ourselves, overcoming our own limits, and improving physical fitness are the main motives of runners who participate in running events. Motives related to health are placed in subsequent positions. Polish runners are more sport goal-oriented; this may result from the fact that in the Czech Republic recreational sport is more grounded in culture. Running events are an important element of cross-country passion, since up to nearly 45% of runners from the Czech Republic and more than half from Poland would limit the practice, or stop it, if they did not have eligibility to participate in competitions. Organizers of sports and recreational events involving road running should rather educate runners in the direction of healthy behaviors. They should enrich the content of health education emphasizing the value of active participation and healthy lifestyle over sports rivalry.

Background. In Poland, marathons are gaining in popularity among enthusiasts of running and healthy lifestyle in general. Universal participation of people in this extreme effort raises a number of questions about its effect on health, and consequently about the legitimacy to promote such events to the general public (to large sectors of society). The aim of this study was to identify the runners’ opinions based on their subjective feelings about the health aspects of participation in marathon races. Material and methods. This study included a group of 869 Polish amateur runners who declared at least one-year participation in running training. The research method was a diagnostic survey: a questionnaire developed by authors and implicit participant observation. Results and conclusions. Most of the runners claim that competing in marathon – and even longer distance runs – is a healthy way of spending leisure time, but skepticism is growing with the length of the training experience. Despite many injuries – arising from overload caused by exhausting trainings or competitions – the vast majority of runners believe that this form of activity is healthy. There is a need to inform about the negative health consequences of irrational training and participation in street runs.

Opis:
Zastosowano metodę opisu interpretacji dyskursów i treści zawartych w mottach poświęconych bieganiu.
The article describes, explains and interprets the phenomenon of long-distance running through the prism of the immersion category. This concept is rather absent in social sciences, including sociology, therefore an attempt to define it, was made. A search of materials dedicated to the phenomenon of running, posted mainly on Italian and Polish websites was used in this analysis. The method of describing the interpretation of the discourses and content contained in the mottos dedicated to running was applied. First of all, the theory of relationality and the thesis about placing the individual in the space of two social mechanisms: determinism and individual abilities were taken into account. The problem was developed and updated both in its specific cases (narratives and experiences of runners, the author’s personal experience with the phenomenon of running, lofty and distanced opinions about running) as well as in an universal scope (descriptions and interpretations present in various studies dedicated to long-distance running). Based on the carried out analyses, it was concluded in the case of runners, that the phenomenon of running is both liberating, reconstructing their biographies, and immersive, i.e. absorbing, “captivating”.

Opis:
Objectives The objective of the study was to reveal morphology, electrolyte and chosen biochemical parameters in terms of health risk in runners in reference to their age and running speed in the case of running a distance of 100 km, which occur after 12 h or 24 h of recovery. Material and Methods Fourteen experienced, male, amateur, ultra-marathon runners, divided into two age and two speed groups took part in the 100-km run. Blood samples for analyses indexes were collected from the ulnar vein just before the run, after 25 km, 50 km, 75 km and 100 km, as well as 12 h and 24 h after termination of the run. Results The sustained ultramarathon run along with the distance covered (p < 0.05) caused an increase in myoglobin (max 90-fold), bilirubin (max 2.8-fold) and total antioxidant status (max 1.15-fold), which also continued during the recovery. Significant changes in the number of white blood cells were observed with each sequential course and could be associated with muscle damage. The electrolyte showed changes towards slight hyperkalemia, but no changes in natrium and calcium concentrations. There were no significant differences between the age and speed groups for all the parameters after completing the 100-km run as well as after 12 h and 24 h of recovery. Conclusions Considering changes in blood morphology and chosen biochemical parameters in ultra-marathon runners during a 100-km run it can be stated that such an exhausting effort may be dangerous for human health due to metabolic changes and large damage to the organs. Negative metabolic changes are independent of age of an ultramarathon runner and occur both in younger (32±5.33 years) and older participants (50.56±9.7 years). It can be concluded that organ damage and negative metabolic changes during a 100-km run occur similarly in participants less experienced as well as in well trained runners. Background. Running tourism began to develop along with a growing popularity of running as a form of recreation. The aim of this study was to define the concept of running tourism and to find out the Polish runners’ motives for participation in this form of tourism. Material and methods. The research tool was a questionnaire developed by the authors. It was possible to fill it in during the Cracovia Marathon (04.22.2012) or online; 186 runners answered 20 questions in the detailed part of questionnaire. Results and conclusions. The runners chose the competition venue taking into account the length of the run and the distance from the place of residence. Other important factors were also: attractiveness of the competition, atmosphere and a desire to visit interesting places after participating in the competition. Awareness of running tourism among the runners in Poland is low. The majority of respondents (74%) stated they knew this term, but only 47% of respondents clearly admits participating in it. In Poland the form of running tourism – a guided running tour – does not exist, but it is a niche sector of travel services that has not been developed yet.

Identyfikacji dokonało 8 ekspertów (metoda delficka), a w szacowaniu ryzyka udział wzięło 24 przedstawicieli 11 biegów półmaratonów organizowanych w Polsce.
The interest in amateur running (including long-distance runs) has been growing in a dynamic way for several years. It is reflected in a significant increase in the number of sports events including marathons and half marathons. The paper describes research aiming to estimate risk of organizing running events in Poland. The presented results refer to half marathons organized in 2018. Professional risk management is a starting point of realizing objectives set by organizers, including assuring safety and satisfaction of all interested parties. The conducted research (both preparatory and proper) has allowed for the identification of risk factors and estimating risk by the representatives of the runs' organizers. The identification was realized by 8 experts (the Delphi method), whereas there were 24 representatives of 11 half marathons in Poland engaged in the risk estimation. The latter was based on the average (of impact and probability). The present article does not present the results of the factor analysis and focuses, which complemented the result of risk estimation. The research results provide concrete information about the priorities on which event organizers may focus in order to mitigate risk. The results also amount to the basis of in-depth risk estimation and analysis for examining trends and the efficiency of undertaken mitigation actions.

Oceniono sposób żywienia oraz częstotliwość stosowania suplementów diety wśród polskich lekkoatletów. Określono wartość energetyczną całodziennych racji pokarmowych badanej grupy sportowców. Wykazano różnice statystycznie istotne pomiędzy oceną teoretyczną a analitycznie oznaczoną zawartością składników odżywczych w analizowanych posiłkach. Stwierdzono błędy żywieniowe w komponowaniu całodziennych racji pokarmowych. Suplementy diety drogą doustną przyjmowało 94,7% ankietowanych mężczyzn oraz wszystkie lekkoatletki.
Nutrition is essential element of sport training. Owing to providing to diet optimal amount of nutritive components sportsmen can realize adequate training process. Athletes often use supplements believing that they can help them to achieve sport success. The nutrition way of Polish athletes seems to be inappropriate. Diet contained too much fat and delivered too less nutritive constituents to cover daily dietary intake. Analysis also demonstrated differences between estimated and determined content of nutritive constituents in the food studied.

In recent years, the number of long-distance trains running on non-electrified lines has been increasing in Poland. Unfortunately, trains running on non-electrified lines, unlike those running on the hook of electric locomotives, are very often canceled, especially in the winter. In this research, the analysis of which lines had the most frequent cancellations of trains in 2021 and the reasons for these cancellations were analyzed. The results show that the most common cause of train cancellations was the lack of an efficient locomotive at the starting station. Most often, accessibility problems concern Czech series 754 diesel locomotives. The numbers of canceled trains in February 2021 and 2022 were also compared. The comparison showed that although the situation is far from ideal, it has improved significantly.

Purpose: Long-distance running has been a global popularity, and differences may be observed in runners of experience. This study was aimed to evaluate the differences in plantar loading between experienced long-distance runners and novice runners during walking. The hypotheses were that smaller load in the middle of the forefoot and the stable foot balance would be observed in experienced runners during walking. Methods: Twenty-five participants were recruited as the experienced runners group (ten: frequency ≥ 4 times/week and distance ≥ 40 km/week, for over 1 year) and the novice group (fifteen: frequency ≤ 2 times/week and distance ≤ 10 km/week, for less than 1 year). Results: The peak Meta loading showed that the novice runners were significantly larger than the experienced runners ( p ≤ .001). The occurring time of peak Meta loading was significantly delayed compared to the experienced runners ( p = .050). Peak Foot balance was higher in the novice runners group ( p ≤ 0.001). Conclusions: This study highlighted the findings of the potential differences of plantar pressures and foot functional parameters during walking in experienced runners and novice runners, specifically the contact duration of phases during stance, toes functions and medial-lateral loading shifting (foot balance) and metatarsals (central forefoot) offloading.

The main statistical tools used are Analysis of Variance and Kolmogorov - Smirnov test for identifying underlying distributions and for comparing distributions of two samples. The obtained results indicate that the dynamics of groups of female runners is different than that of male runners. Also, a meaningful factor for the sha pe of the distribution is time limit set by the races organizers.

Opis:
This article discusses a survey to investigate the problem of the health literacy of leisure runners. The survey was conducted in 2016 in Poland among 963 participants of the DOZ Marathon Lodz with PZU [Polish Insurance Company] . A specially developed scale for measuring the participants’ level of health literacy (−3, 23 points) was used, and the survey answers were evaluated by medical doctors. As the average score was 3.16, the surveyed population was shown to lack information about the medical and health consequences of running. The people who were relatively better informed were women and younger runners (and additionally single runners and those not active on the labor market). An unexpected finding was that social-class affiliation, educational level, and advancement in running ability had a low degree of influence on the health knowledge of the surveyed runners. The conclusion is that a health-related motivation to train in the sport of running (which was declared to be a key factor in many studies) is grounded in common knowledge, while the majority of leisure runners are unacquainted with the actual risks and benefits of running.

Opis:
Materiał i metody. Średnia wieku to 35,59 (SD 9,24). Dane zostały zebrane za pomocą ankiety, metodą sondażową, a opisane zostały w sposób jakościowy bez użycia analiz statystycznych. Wyniki i Wnioski. 91 badanych ze 140 doznało różnych kontuzji podczas biegania. Do najczęstszych urazów u biegaczy doszło w okolicy stopy i stawie skokowym, były to skręcenia (30%), naderwania (16%) i przeciążenia (16%). Większość osób biegających stosuje odnowę biologiczną w tym prawie połowa automasaż. Regularne bieganie stanowi dobrą formę dbania o zdrowie, prawie wszyscy badani polecili by ją innym osobom.
Background. Running in developed countries is a very common and easily accessible form of physical activity, its main goals include recreation and sport. The aim of the study was to assess the most common injuries in people regularly involved in amateur long-distance runs. Material and methods. 140 people, 79 women and 61 men aged 18-61, mainly residents of Warsaw, participated in the study. The mean age is 35.59 (SD 9.24). The data was collected by means of a questionnaire, survey method, and described in a qualitative manner without the use of statistical analyzes. Results and Conclusions. 91 of the 140 subjects suffered various injuries while running. The most common injuries in runners were to the foot and ankle area and included sprains (30%), tears (16%) and overloads (16%). Most of the runners undergo biological regeneration and almost half of them use self-massage. Regular jogging is a good form of taking care of health and almost all respondents would recommend it to other people.
