Introduction. This article reports differences in accurate and inaccurate forehand and backhand strokes in tennis. The tests were carried out on a professional tennis player. The duration of a stroke, the heights of the individual segments of the right upper limb and differences in the heights of the segments at the beginning and at the end of every phase of stroke were examined. Aim. The major aim of the work was to expose upper limb disparity in stokes. Description of the case report. The research tool was inertial motion sensors (IMS) based on an accelerometer, a gyroscope and a magnetometer. A professional tennis player was examined using the individual case method and kinematic analysis. Results. The analysis concerned the average time to perform forehand and backhand strokes during all phases of the stroke, i.e. preparation, acceleration and follow-through phases. The average heights of the individual upper limb segments during a stroke were also taken into account. The results of the study are meant to show how the movement of the upper limb affects the accuracy and velocity of a stroke. Conclusion. The movements of individual segments in some accurate strokes were similar to those in inaccurate strokes.

Opis:
With its extensive use in industry, assessing the reliability of the micro inertial measurment unit (MIMU) has become a pressing need. Unfortunately, the MIMU is made up of several components, and the degradation processes of each are intertwined, making it difficult to assess the MIMU’s reliability and remaining useful life. In this research, we offer a reliability assessment approach for the MIMU, which has long-lifetime and multiple performance characteristics (PCs), based on accelerated degradation data and copula theory. Each PC model of MIMU is constructed utilizing drift Brownian motion to depict accelerated degradation process. The copula function is used to model the multivariate dependent accelerated degradation test data and to describe the dependency between multiple MIMU performance parameters. The particle swarm optimization algorithm is used to estimate the unknown parameters in the multi-dependent ADT model. Finally, the storage test and simulation example on MIMU’s accelerated degradation data verify the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method.

The paper presents a part of a prototype system for the monitoring of selected vital functions of humans and some preliminary results obtained from the device using implemented algorithm. The system consists of such essential modules like a microcontroller board, an inertial measurement unit and additional sensors. The main task of the device is human movement monitoring and detecting selected anomalies, e.g. fall or fainting. At the first stage, the movement classification was considered. The main movement type are walking, running and selected variants of transitions between different phases like standing up or going downstairs. The determining of the movement is based on the intuitive algorithm using raw data from accelerometers complemented by sensors like barometer and heart rate monitor. The algorithm utilizes automated multiscale-based peak detection and wavelet transform energy calculations. Finally, some further work directions and development possibilities are discussed.

Opis:
This study examined the validity of an inertial measurement unit system for measuring lower-limb joint kinematics during linear decelerations. A male team athlete (age 36 years, stature 1.75 m, mass 80.0 kg) performed multiple linear decelerations, following 20 m runs at 50%, 75% and 100% self-perceived effort. Inertial measurement unit sensors were strapped to lower-limb segments and retroreflective markers were adhered to the lower-limbs for 3D optical motion analysis. Ground contact time, foot to centre of mass displacement (foot-COM), peak and minimum angle, mean angular velocity and range of motion at the ankle, knee and hip during the contact phases of each deceleration were determined. Measures were valid if a very large correlation (r ≥ 0.7) and small bias (effect size < 0.6) were evident. Following 50% effort, ground contact time, foot-COM and most hip and knee kinematics were valid. Ground contact time, foot-COM and knee flexion velocity and range of motion were valid following 75% efforts. Ground contact time and knee flexion velocity were valid following 100% effort. Therefore, the inertial measurement unit system tested can be used to assess temporal-spatial parameters during a deceleration regardless of the preceding effort, and hip and knee kinematics following low intensity running.

Over the past decades microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) researchers have demonstrated a number of microsensors for almost every possible sensing modality, including attitudes. Current MEMS inertial measurement units (IMU) come in many shapes, sizes, and costs — depending on the application, and performance required. MEMS sensors have proved and demonstrated performance exceeding those of their macroscale counterpart sensors. In the paper chosen IMU applications in underwater measurements are presented. First, for reduction of instability of the underwater sensor during measurements, like multibeam echosounder system (MBES), where the MEMS parameters’ quality are crucial for further MBES record-processing. Second, in underwater navigation systems, for determining the position of underwater vehicles, like Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROV) and, more recently, Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) or to improve other positioning methods.

Small, lightweight, power-efficient and low-cost microelectromechanical system (MEMS) inertial sensors and microcontrollers available in the market today help reduce the instability of Multibeam Sonars. Current MEMS inertial measurement units (IMUs) come in many shapes, sizes, and costs — depending on the application and performance required. Although MEMS inertial sensors offer affordable and appropriately scaled units, they are not currently capable of meeting all requirements for accurate and precise attitudes, due to their inherent measurement noise. The article presents the comparison of different MEMS technologies and their parameters regarding to the main application, namely Multibeam Echo Sounders (MBES). The quality of MEMS parameters is crucial for further MBES record-processing. The article presents the results of undertaken researches in that area, and these results are relatively positive for low-cost MEMS. The paper undertakes some vital aspect of using MEMS in the attitude and heading reference system (AHRS) context. Opis:
In this paper we present a new low-cost navigation system designed for small size Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) based on Vision-Based Navigation (VBN) and other avionics sensors. The main objective of our research was to design a compact, light and relatively inexpensive system capable of providing the Required Navigation Performance (RNP) in all phases of flight of a small UAV, with a special focus on precision approach and landing, where Vision Based Navigation (VBN) techniques can be fully exploited in a multisensor integrated architecture. Various existing techniques for VBN were compared and the Appearance-Based Approach (ABA) was selected for implementation. Feature extraction and optical flow techniques were employed to estimate flight parameters such as roll angle, pitch angle, deviation from the runway and body rates. Additionally, we addressed the possible synergies between VBN, Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) and MEMS-IMU (Micro-Electromechanical System Inertial Measurement Unit) sensors, as well as the aiding from Aircraft Dynamics Models (ADMs). In particular, by employing these sensors/models, we aimed to compensate for the shortcomings of VBN and MEMS-IMU sensors in high-dynamics attitude determination tasks. An Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) was developed to fuse the information provided by the different sensors and to provide estimates of position, velocity and attitude of the UAV platform in real-time. Two different integrated navigation system architectures were implemented. The first used VBN at 20 Hz and GPS at 1 Hz to augment the MEMS-IMU running at 100 Hz. The second mode also included the ADM (computations performed at 100 Hz) to provide augmentation of the attitude channel. Simulation of these two modes was accomplished in a significant portion of the AEROSONDE UAV operational flight envelope and performing a variety of representative manoeuvres (i.e., straight climb, level turning, turning descent and climb, straight descent, etc.). Simulation of the first integrated navigation system architecture (VBN/IMU/GPS) showed that the integrated system can reach position, velocity and attitude accuracies compatible with CAT-II precision approach requirements. Simulation of the second system architecture (VBN/IMU/GPS/ADM) also showed promising results since the achieved attitude accuracy was higher using the ADM/VBS/IMU than using VBS/IMU only. However, due to rapid divergence of the ADM virtual sensor, there was a need for frequent re-initialisation of the ADM data module, which was strongly dependent on the UAV flight dynamics and the specific manoeuvring transitions performed.

In doing so, the determination of ship’s position by two free gyro vectors was discussed and the algorithmic design of the free-gyro positioning and directional system was introduced briefly. Next, the errors of transformation matrices of the gyro and body frames, i.e., attitude errors, were examined and the attitude equations were also derived. The perturbations of the errors of the nadir angle including ship’s heading were investigated in each stage from the sensor of rate of motion of the spin axis to the nadir angle obtained. Finally, the perturbation error equations of ship’s position used the nadir angles were derived in the form of a linear error model and the concept of FDOP was also suggested by using covariance of position error.

In this paper, an innovative active seat suspension system for vehicles is presented. This seat suspension prototype is built with a shear guidance mechanism, an air spring, a hydraulic shock absorber and end-stop buffers. The acceleration particular signals are measured by using Inertial Measurement Units (IMUs) placed on the seat and the human head. As the excitation, the horizontal vibrations are applied. As an alternative to the classical Fourier approach, the Wavelet Transfer Function (WTF) is introduced to describe the effectiveness of particular seat suspension. In both of the system cases, the human head reaction is investigated by using the Matlab package.

Opis:
The GPS system is widely used in navigation and the GPS receiver can offer long-term stable absolute positioning information. The overall system performance depends largely on the signal environments. The position obtained from GPS is often degraded due to obstruction and multipath effect caused by buildings, city infrastructure and vegetation, whereas, the current performance achieved by inertial navigation systems (INS) is still relatively poor due to the large inertial sensor errors. The complementary features of GPS and INS are the main reasons why integrated GPS/INS systems are becoming increasingly popular. GPS/INS systems offer a high data rate, high accuracy position and orientation that can work in all environments, particularly those where satellite availability is restricted. In the paper integration algorithm of GPS and INS systems data for pedestrians in urban area is presented. For data integration an Extended Kalman Filter (EKF) algorithm is proposed. Complementary characteristics of GPS and INS with EKF can overcome the problem of huge INS drifts, GPS outages, dense multipath effect and other individual problems associated with these sensors.

Opis:
Typically, an inertial navigation system (INS) is used to determine the position, speed, and orientation of an object moving relative to the earth's surface. The navigation information (position, speed and orientation) of an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is needed to control its flight. Since the resistance of INS to interferences is very high, it is possible to ensure reliable flights in conditions of high-intensity noise. This article explores the principles of constructing inertial measurement units (IMU) that are part of the INS and indicates perspective directions for their development. Micro-electromechanical inertial measurement units were studied in this work, and functional and principal electrical circuits for connecting units of inertial measurements to the microcontroller were developed. The results of practical measurements of units without calibration and after calibration were obtained using the created laboratory device. Based on the obtained results, the necessity of sensor calibration was revealed, and accuracy was improved by performing calibration with the Kalman filter algorithm. The Kalman filter is the heart of the navigation system. In a low-cost system, IMU errors like bias, scale factor error and random walk noise dominate the INS error growth.

Opis:
Due to the development of MEMS, there is an opportunity to build a low-cost integrated navigation systems, operating independently of horizon visibility. This paper presents the proposal of an integrated GPS/IMU platform using MEMS technology. In order to verify the performance of a system built at the University of Warmia and Mazury, an experiment was conducted. In this experiment a precise Javad GNSS receiver, commercial grade GPS/IMU XW – ADU5660 and own-built system were used. The experiment was conducted to compare the results obtained from self built device with the working military integrated navigation unit. During the study all three devices were mounted inside moving vehicle. The car drove route inside the Kortowo campus, during which, all equipment performed measurements. Then, the results from both integrated systems were compared with RTK (Real Time Kinematic) results from Javad receiver. Experiments prove that the performance of own device is comparable to the commercial device.
