The Arctic Ocean is currently in transition towards a new, warmer state. Understanding the regional variability of oceanographic conditions is important, since they have a direct impact on local ecosystems. This work discusses the implementation of a hydrodynamic model for Hornsund, the southernmost fjord of western Svalbard. Despite its location, Hornsund has a stronger Arctic signature than other Svalbard fjords. The model was validated against available data, and the seasonal mean circulation was obtained from numerical simulations. Two main general circulation regimes have been detected in the fjord. The winter circulation represents a typical closed fjord system, while in summer the fresh water discharge from the catchment area generates a surface layer with a net flow out of Hornsund. Also described are the local hydrographic front and its seasonal variability, as well as the heat and salt content in Hornsund. The integration of salt and heat anomalies provides additional information about the salt flux into the innermost basin of the fjord - Brepollen during the summer. Extensive in situ observations have been collected in Hornsund for the last two decades but our hydrodynamic model is the first ever implemented for this area. While at the moment in situ observations better represent the state of this fjord's environment and the location of measurements, a numerical model, despite its flaws, can provide a more comprehensive image of the entire fjord's physical state. In situ observations and numerical simulations should therefore be regarded as complementary tools, with models enabling a better interpretation and understanding of experimental data.

This article presents the results of investigations of the effect of heat treatment temperature on the content of the carbide phase of HS3-1-2 and HS6-5-2 low-alloy high-speed steel. Analysis of the phase composition of carbides is carried out using the diffraction method. It is determined that with increasing austenitising temperature, the intensification of dissolution of M6C carbide increases. As a result, an increase in the grain size of the austenite and the amount of retained austenite causes a significant reduction in the hardness of hardened steel HS3-1-2 to be observed. The results of diffraction investigations showed that M7C3 carbides containing mainly Cr and Fe carbides and M6C carbides containing mainly Mo and W carbides are dissolved during austenitisation. During austenitisation of HS3-1-2 steel, the silicon is transferred from the matrix to carbides, thus replacing carbide-forming elements. An increase in a degree of tempering leads to intensification of carbide separation and this process reduce the grindability of tested steels.

The article deals with the influence of chemical composition of martensitic stainless steel for castings GXCrNi13-4 (the 1.4317 material) on mechanical properties and structure of as cast steel after heat treatment. Properties of these martensitic stainless steel are heavily influenced by chemical composition and structure of the material after heat treatment. Structure of these steels after quenching is formed with martensite and residual austenite. When tempering the steel the carbon content in martensite is reduced and gently deposited carbides occur. The way of heat treatment has a major impact on structure of martensitic steels with low carbon content and thus on strength, hardness and elongation to fracture of these steels. Chemical composition of the melt has been treated to the desired composition of the lower, middle and upper bounds of the nickel content in the steel within the limits allowed by the standard. Test blocks were gradually cast from the melt. The influence of the nickel equivalent value on structure and properties of the 1.4317 steel was determined from results of mechanical tests.

For the EN GX4CrNi13-4 martensitic stainless steel, research was conducted to investigate the impact of the quenching intensity and the content of nickel on the mechanical properties and amount of retained austenite. It was found that the amount of retained austenite significantly increases with growing nickel concentration. On the other hand, the cooling rate at quenching makes a difference only if the cooling is intensive, then amount of retained austenite decrease. A higher nickel content improves the mechanical properties. With more intensive cooling, the tensile strength decreases while the yield strength increases. The ductility is not significantly affected by the cooling intensity.

W pracy przedstawiono dane dotyczące wpływu dodatku polimeru na ciepło hydratacji modyfikowanych gipsów. W badaniach wykorzystano hydroksyetylo metylocelulozę (HEMC) w różnych ilościach wagowych w zakresie od 1% do 5% w stosunku do gipsu. Do pomiaru wydzielanego ciepła podczas procesu hydratacji wykorzystano kalorymetr Calmetrix I-CAL 2000 HPC. W wyniku przeprowadzonych pomiarów zaobserwowano, że niewielka ilość polimeru w znaczący sposób zmieniała wartości wydzielającego się ciepła. Zauważono, że wraz ze wzrastającą ilością zastosowanego polimeru następował wzrost ciepła hydratacji w modyfikowanych kompozytach gipsowych.
The work presents data on the influence of polymer addition on the heat hydration of modified gypsum. The studies used hydroxyethylmethyl cellulose (HEMC) in various amounts by weight in the range from 1% to 5%. The Calmetrix I-CAL 2000 HPC was used to measure the heat generated during the hydration process. As a result of the measurements it was observed that a small amount of polymer significantly changed the values of heat generated. It was noted that as the amount of polymer used increased, the heat of hydration increased in modified gypsum composites.

There are different grades of steel to suit the requirements of different industries. Their mechanical properties and microstructure are dependent both on the chemical composition as well as the forming and heat treatment processes applied. Of great importance is the content of carbon. The paper is divided into two parts. The part devoted to the mechanical properties of non-alloyed steel includes diagrams showing the influence of the carbon content on the hardness, tensile strength and elongation. The part concerned with the microstructure of nonalloyed steel includes images illustrating the effects of the carbon content and different processes on the formation of the microstructure of selected grades of non-alloyed steel.

Opis:
Cast Hadfield steel is a material with high resistance to abrasion, provided, however, that it is used under the conditions of high dynamic loads. To increase the wear resistance of the alloy under the conditions in which no large pressures are operating, carbide-forming elements are introduced to the alloy. However, this leads to the precipitation in castings, mainly at the grain boundaries, of increased amounts of complex carbides. The heat treatment of cast Hadfield steel consists in solutioning to obtain a purely austenitic structure with no carbide precipitates. Changes in microstructure as a function of the changing temperature of the solution treatment were traced in hammers for crushers cast from high-manganese steel with an addition of chromium (1.7% C, 16% Mn and 1.4% Cr). It has been found that the use of the solution treatment temperatures much higher or prolongation of the solutioning time (compared to standard heat treatment) does not lead to the formation of a purely austenitic structure.

The paper compares changes in the structure and mechanical properties due to the synergistic effect of alloying elements Zr and Ti. It is assumed that by increasing the content of Zr and Ti in the aluminium alloy, better mechanical properties will be achieved. Paper focuses on description of the differences between the samples casted into the shell mold and the metal mold. Main difference between mentioned molds is a different heat transfer coefficient during pouring, solidification and cooling of the metal in the mold. The main goal was to analyse the influence of Zr and Ti elements and compare the mechanical properties after the heat treatment. Curing and precipitation aging were used during the experiment. The effect of the elements on AlSi7Mg0.3 alloy created differences between the excluded Zr phases after heat treatment. Evaluation of the microstructure pointed to the decomposition of large predominantly needle Zr phases into smaller, more stable formations.

This study aims to find the possibility of producing eco-friendly thin Medium Density Fibrepanels (MDF) with the participation of corn stalk fibres and using lignosulphonate as a bio-based binder. The main novelty in the research is the establishment of the effect of additional heat treatment on the properties of MDF manufactured with the participation of non-wood lignocellulosic raw materials and bonded with bio-based adhesive – lignosulphonate. Panels with 15% lignosulphonate content and variation of the content of corn stalk fibres from 0% to 30% were manufactured. Previous experiments showed that when only lignosulfonate is used as a binder, the manufactured panels generally have low waterproofness. To reduce the effect of this main disadvantage, the panels were subjected additionally to heat treatment. The properties of the MDF with and without additional heat treatment were compared. The effect of both the content of corn stalk fibres and the additional heat treatment was found. As a whole, the additional heat treatment improves the properties of MDF produced with lignosulphonate. Still, in case of increased content of corn stalk fibres, it is necessary to apply softened regimes than the ones selected for this study.

The paper presents possibilities of using by - products of the agri-food sector, in the form of sunflower husks, for energy purposes. Physical and chemical properties in the form of heat of combustion, calorific value for three moisture levels and ash content for two temperatures of combustion were determined and the carbon content (C), hydrogen content (H) and nitrogen content (N) were calculated pursuant to the PN-EN 15104 standard. Analysis of the heat of combustion and calorific value proved good energy properties of the investigated biomass. For the moisture level of 9%, 16%, 32% the heat of combustion was respectively 19.44 MJ·kg-1, 17.94 MJ·kg-1, 15.03 MJ·kg-1, and the calorific value 18.09 MJ·kg-1, 16.28 MJ·kg-1, 13.16 MJ·kg-1. The average ash content of the investigated biomass for the combustion temperature of 600ºC and 815ºC was respectively 2.12% and 2.04. In the analyzed biomass the nitrogen content was determined at the level of 1.57%, carbon of 43.87% and hydrogen of 6.29%.
W pracy przedstawiono możliwości wykorzystania produktów ubocznych sektora rolno-spożywczego w postaci łuski słonecznika z przeznaczeniem na cele energetyczne. Dla badanego surowca wyznaczono właściwości fizykochemiczne w postaci ciepła spalania, wartości opałowej dla trzech wilgotności i zawartości popiołu dla dwóch temperatur spalania oraz oznaczono zawartość węgla (C), wodoru (H) i azotu (N) zgodnie z normą PN-EN 15104. Analiza ciepła spalania i wartości opałowej wykazała dobre właściwości energetyczne badanej biomasy. Dla wilgotności 9%, 16%, 32% ciepło spalania wyniosło odpowiednio 19,44 MJ·kg-1, 17,94 MJ·kg-1, 15,03 MJ·kg-1, a wartość opałowa 18,09 MJ·kg-1, 16,28 MJ·kg-1, 13,16 MJ·kg-1. Średnia zawartość popiołu badanej biomasy dla temperatur spalania 600ºC i 815ºC wynosiła odpowiednio 2,12% i 2,04%. W analizowanej biomasie zawartość azotu określono na 1,57%, węgla 43,87% i wodoru 6,29%.

Skład mleka klaczy zmienia się podczas laktacji. Od tych zmian zależą tempo wzrostu i rozwoju źrebiąt, natomiast na zmiany te wpływa wiele czynników, m.in. stan fizjologiczny klaczy. Celem pracy było zbadanie wpływu wieku oraz terminu wystąpienia i długości rui na zawartość magnezu w mleku klaczy. Badania prowadzono na 30 klaczach czystej krwi arabskiej. Stwierdzono, że poziom magnezu obniżał się w ciągu 30-dniowej laktacji, szczególnie w okresie od 4. do 12. dnia po oźrebieniu. W mleku klaczy starszych była istotnie wyższa koncentracja magnezu. Także termin wystąpienia rui oddziaływał na poziom omawianego pierwiastka - klacze z rujami dawały mleko uboższe w magnez. Mleko najzasobniejsze w magnez produkowały klacze, u których ruja trwała średnio 4-7 dni.
Milk composition changes during lactation. The growth rate of foals depends on these changes, which could be connected to the physiological state of the mares. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of Arabian mares' age and their heat term and length on the magnesium level in the milk. The research was carried out on 30 Arabian mares. It was confirmed that the magnesium concentration decreased during the 30-days' lactation, especially from the 4th to 12th day after parturition. Older mares produced milk with the significantly higher level of magnesium. Also the heat term influenced Mg concentration - mares with earlier heat produced milk with the lowest magnesium content. Mares which were 4 to 7 days on heat produced milk with the highest level of magnesium.

Waste high-nitrogen nitrocellulose (NC) has always been disposed of as hazardous material for destruction, and has not been recycled as a resource. The present work describes how waste high-nitrogen NC may be converted to low-nitrogen NC via an alkaline denitration reaction between sodium hydrosulfide and the nitrate ester groups, in order to control and reduce the nitrogen content for industrial products. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM), infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), 1H nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H NMR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used to detected the changes in the surface morphology and chemical structure of the NC samples. TG-DSC tests analyzed the decomposition temperature and the heat released on thermal decomposition, and the explosion heat was obtained by calorimetry. The results demonstrated that the denitration reaction does not destroy the skeletal structure of NC. Notably, the nitrogen content of NC may be reduced from 12.92 to 10.74%, generating the level for industrial products (N <12%). Moreover, NC samples with different nitrogen contents have similar decomposition trends and decomposition temperatures, but the heat released is gradually decreased and the explosion heat is significantly reduced, and confirms the successful partial removal of nitrate ester groups from NC. Therefore, the alkaline denitration affords a potential method for recycling waste high-nitrogen NC.

Thin foils of aluminum alloys are commonly used in automotive industry for manufacturing heat exchangers. Use of twin-roll casting instead of direct-chill casting requires modifications in the manufacturing process and use of improved materials. In the present study, the evolution in microstructure and mechanical properties during isochronal annealing of two AW3003-based alloys differing in silicon content was monitored. The silicon influenced both the microhardness and precipitation kinetics during annealing, but not the recrystallization temperature. Precipitation of cubic $\alphs-Al_{15}(Mn,Fe)_3Si_2$ phase occurred in two steps in the material with higher Si content, while mainly precipitates of $Al_6(Mn,Fe)$ phase formed in the second material in a broad temperature interval, preferentially at grain boundaries.

Opis:
Due to the rapid development of geothermal technologies, the problem of efficient and proper evaluation of soil thermal conductivity becomes extremely important. Factors mostly affecting the soil conductivity are the conductivity of solid phase and the degree of saturation. The former one is mainly affected by the mineral composition, in particular, by the content of quartz whose conductivity is the highest one among all the minerals forming soil skeleton. Organic matter, because of its relatively low conductivity, influences the solid conductivity as well. The problem addressed in the paper is the influence of mentioned factors on temperature changes in the vicinity of thermally loaded structure embedded in the soil medium. Numerical simulations are carried out for different values of soil thermal conductivity resulting from various quartz contents and degrees of saturation. In addition, a weak coupled – heat and water transport – problem is considered.
