Opis:
The article brings to light the relationship between politics and social sciences in interwar Poland in its local and transnational dimensions. It explores the beginnings of expertise in ethnology and the evolution of the discipline’s tools and methods as closely linked to the political goals of the interwar Polish state, and the post-coup Sanacja [Sanation] regime in particular. Ethnologists carried out fieldwork focused on multiethnic territories, such as Eastern Galicia, which were subjected to international territorial disputes. The collaboration with politicians and the administration – developed mostly in the framework of research institutes – was a source of inspiration and, at the same time, stiff competition between scientific schools. To illustrate some consequences of this collaboration, the article traces an argument over scientific approaches to the ‘ethnic question’ which involved ethnologists and empirical sociologists, and the connection of this argument to the objectivity principle in science. These different approaches reflect international theoretical and epistemological divisions at the time as much as they show the direct and indirect exchange of ideas within the European scholarship.

This article deals with the matter of problems pervading culture researchers up to date despite their belonging to different schools or researching trends. Lévi-Strauss continuously cherishes his reflections connected with the essence of ethnology, purposefulness and ethics of ethnological research and with the methods that are used in conducting them. Some of the notions present in “Tristes Tropiques”, creating a unified wholeness and still coming back in the book, can be perceived as “methodological – and ethical – deliberations over the nature of studies at first linked to travels, and later put into a framework of modern science – ethnology.” A travel inwards ethnology, which was triggered by a real research travel to Brazil, is multipronged. Its route is marked not only by readings, but also by some elements of material culture, various behaviors and institutions that are often compared by Lévi-Strauss to prior descriptions of Indian tribes.

Opis:
In the past two decades, Slovak ethnologists have conducted studies of several urban communities revealing a complicated structure of social relations and yielding empirical data about the life of the city. They revealed that although the social dimension of the city life was based on universal differentiation principles - such as kinship, gender, age, race and ethnicity, religion, social class, occupation, and the like, it also changed in time and space. In the 20th century, especially politics and ideology was the decisive factors in social differentiation. Interests of political powers inspired antagonistic, bipolar orientations; they promoted differing ideas about the social order or regime and were the tool of polarization of society. Politics united people regardless of their social group membership. Groups were united by common feelings of belonging, togetherness, solidarity and shared beliefs. In the study of the city, most Slovak ethnologists methodologically prefer the combination of the micro and macro perspective - studying the individual and basing their interpretation on the large framework of broader social processes. They have primarily been interested in the question of how macro reality was reflected in people’s behavior and mainly how it influenced the formation of various groups, intergroup relations and relations with other groups and the broader social setting, norms of behavior, attitudes and opinions of these groups, and the like. As important appear those group characteristics that have been the source of stereotypical attitudes in the urban community - such as race, religion, political orientation, property, social status, family origin or territorial location. Especially ethnicity and religion are typical and lasting differentiation traits in Slovak cities. Therefore, ethnological study has focused on ethnic groups or religious minorities and their relations with the majority, as well as on the causes and contexts of conflicts. Therefore, research has focused on the issues of tolerance, isolation, integration, adaptation, and the like.

The purpose of this article is to present the political anthropology as a subdiscipline of anthropology and political science, because the term exists in both. However, both the term and the subject of research, as well as methodological approaches are differ. This situation should develop political anthropology, especially in political science, but it didn’t. Political anthropology has a long tradition in Western science. As a field of anthropology has a little over 100 years, from the position of political science dates back to its origin in ancient Greece. Political anthropology was included in the curriculum in higher education.

Opis:
The article promotes the argument that anthropological or ethnological knowledge is primarily produced through ethnographies that present fieldwork experience. As publications that appear after returning home, they provide the social sciences with the most recent information about the present reality. Moreover, that is where we can find new methodological approaches and new theoretical concepts. Our contemporary experience in such a fast-changing world shows the uselessness of the formerly applied analytical notions, forcing us to search for a new form of description and new interpretative categories. The article is actually a survey of the best known fieldwork monographs presented through theories, schools and trends in cultural and social anthropology that have been constituted or overcome by these very monographs, which are milestones in over a century of ethnological/anthropological research. As the last ones are from the 21st century, they present not only the newest research results, but also the most up-to-date methodologies.

The participants took part in the 13th World Congress of Public Health in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and conducted field research on the question of the impact of tourism on traditional culture of 12 tribes settled in lower Omo Valley and nutrition habits of the members of the tribes. The project has won several prizes. The “PromoKazachstan” project consisted in field research on Kazakh shamanism. Doubtless, both projects are fine examples of the key role which can be played by ethnology and its methodology in interdisciplinary scientific projects, as a complementary with life sciences approach.

The article is an attempt at collecting and discussing the procedures of the ethnogeographical method which have been used in Polish ethnology from the beginning of the twentieth century until today. The most important discussions of this method in the Polish scientific literature have been compiled, and on their basis a list synthesising its principles and heuristics has been created. The subsequent part of the article discusses how the ethnogeographic method as practised in Poland so far presents itself from the perspective of contemporary cartographic and statistical methods, especially from the viewpoint of research within the framework of cultural evolution and digital humanities.

Opis:
The role of folk culture, especially artistic works based on traditional patterns and shaped under the influence of natural, historical, social and economic factors has an unquestionably important position in a discussion on the national heritage, its separateness and “place” in the European culture. Ethnologically, the folk art was interpreted as the utilitarian, religious, magic, prestigious, culture created as well as artistic and aesthetic value. The discussion on the contemporary state of the so called folk art and scope of definition of the very cultural phenomenon experiences many obstacles. The notions “ folk art”, “folk works” and “innate works” demand necessary verification in which one has to take into account new defining criteria, such as technique, subject-matter, function, and, above all attitude and author’s artistic self-awareness. A characteristic feature of this work is the continuation of traditional patterns and at the same time search for artistic individualism. In consequence, it leads to diverging from a typical convention, aiming at new, different formal, technical and thematic solutions. What needs verification is also the notion of “a folk author”. Nowadays it is rather a “pseudofolk” author, an artist for whom the most important is the process of creating his/her own artistic reality, experienced inside him/herself and its expression. A creative passion is an attempt to fight with passing time and rapid changes he/she does not follow, and overcoming workshop and emotional barriers. The very text is an attempt to characterize the contemporary and individual artistic work on the basis of the studies conducted in Silesia, especially Cieszyn Silesia and Zaolzie.

Wojciech Józef Burszta (1957–2021) was one of the most prominent Polish anthro- pologists. He specialized in the theory and methodology of ethnology, cultural anthropology, cultural studies, folk and popular culture, and anthropology of the present. He is the author of several hundred works in these fields. The importance of his achievements for cultural studies is unquestionable. His researches largely defined the shape of Polish cultural anthropology. In 1979, he graduated from ethnography at the Historical Faculty at Adam Mickiewicz University. In 1984, he received his PhD in Ethnology. In 1993, he obtained a readership (habilitation) and in 1998 he became a professor. He played an important role in the community of cultural researchers. He was a member of the Committee on Ethnological Scien- ces of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Committee on Polish Diaspora of the Polish Academy of Sciences, and the Cultural Sciences Committee of the Polish Academy of Sciences (member and chairman). His activity in scientific life also included participation in scientific societies: the Polish Folk Society and the Polish Cultural Studies Society, the Polish Sociological Society and the European Asso- ciation of Social Anhtropology. Józef Obrebski's article entitled 'Bronislaw Malinowski's Functional Method of Analysis' preserved in his archives in manuscript form. was edited by Anna Engelking. This elaborate work concerning the method of analysis of Obrebski's professor and mentor presents Malinowski's functionalism in the context of both his own scholarly biography as well contemporary anthropology. The article is accompanied by discussion by Kotarbinski and Ossowski, and the author's own response to it. The remaining archival texts by Obrebski are included in the Annex. These are fragments of two lost or unfinished larger works regarding Malinowski from the late 1930's. The first edition of these yet unknown archival works and the evidence of the first studies of Malinowski's legacy becomes an interesting contribution to the history of Polish ethnology and sociology.
Prezentowany tekst, zachowany w spuściźnie archiwalnej Józefa Obrebskiego w postaci maszynopisu referatu, został opracowany do druku przez Annę Engelking. W obszernym referacie o metodzie badawczej swojego nauczyciela i mistrza, wygłoszonym w 1939 roku, Obrębski przedstawił interpretację funkcjonalizmu Malinowskiego, ukazując ją w kontekście zarówno ówczesnej myśli antropologicznej, jak i własnej biografii naukowej. Referatowi towarzyszy dyskusja z głosami m.in. Opracowanie - pierwodruk nieznanych dotychczas badaczom archiwaliow Obrębskiego i zarazem świadectwo pierwszych polskich badań nad Malinowskim - stanowi interesujący przyczynek do historii polskiej etnologii i socjologii.
