Opis:
In Western Europe the Church as an institution was integrated into the military system and was obliged to serve the monarchy. Apart from performing vassal duties, the Latin clergy frequently participated in military actions. Although the Church laws forbade clergymen to shed blood, there were many examples of the violation of this rule. The attitude of the Orthodox Church in the Byzantine Empire concerning the possible participation of the clergy in war differed significantly from that of Latin Europe. The Byzantine priesthood did not become involved in military actions. The Greek Church possessed neither military units nor vassal commitment to the Empire. Despite a very close relationship with the Byzantine Church the attitude of the Georgian Church to the issue differs from that of Byzantium and is closer to the Western practice. The feudal organization of Georgia conditioned the social structure of the Georgian Church and its obligations before the monarchy. Despite the fact that the Georgian Church enjoyed many advantages, it had to take part in military campaigns. The upper circles of Georgian Church dignitaries were accustomed to both conducting military campaigns or taking part in the combat. In regard to military activities of clergy, Georgian law was much more lenient than Byzantine, and in the case of necessity, it even modified Greek legal norms. The conflict with the Christian canons was decided in favor of military necessity, and it was reflected in the legislation.

Opis:
Frequent information in the media about offences of the Catholic clergy without mentioning similar misdeeds of laity makes one challenge the Church’s claim of holiness and demand expulsion of a sinner from her. This article shows a theological, i.e. the original understanding of the Church holiness, which consists in the presence of Christ in her and of his grace which sanctifies sinners. The requirement of highly ethical Christian behaviour is only the consequence of baptismal grace – and in its realism – means growth in grace and constant conversion. Fundamentality of this baptismal relationship with the Church lasts despite sins of the baptized but it implies their attitude of constant conversion. The notion “sinful Church” does not exclude her holiness as it expresses the truth that – like Christ – she is indeed burdened and carries the faults of her members. A derivative of the Church historical dimension is a constant and regular need to verify and renew her structures, taking into account pastoral fruitfulness.

Church doors are one of many symbolic elements of the church body. In the Old Testament it developed eschatological significance that have taken the gate, understood as the gates of hell. In this sense the church gate appear in the iconography of the Court of God. This symbolism was taken over by Christianity. Allegorical and symbolic significance of the church doors was lined in the writings of the apologists of the faith and the Church Fathers.

Opis:
Radio is a very powerful mass communication medium. In radio broadcasting, one can hear the echo of Christ’s words to his apostles in the missionary discourse: “You received without charge, give without charge…What you hear in whispers, proclaim from the house tops” (Mt 10,8b.27). Although the Church uses radio as a means to transmit the Good News of salvation, and we as human beings receive radio transmissions as a part of our daily life, we barely stop to think and reflect upon the underlying aspects of radio as a means of communication. In this paper, the Author endeavours to give a historical overview of what makes radio an important medium for evangelisation according to four key documents of the Church, while also studying the underlying theological positions found in these documents. These documents enable us to study radio as a broadcasting medium, highlighting the possible reactions of the Church to radio and how the Church changed its stance on radio over the years. The reason for focussing specifically on radio is for two particular reasons: from the very beginning, the Church has considered radio as a means for evangelising the masses. Notwithstanding this, what is going to be discussing in the paper can be equally applied to Television as a mass communication medium. Secondly, the Church took an active role in radio broadcasting by asking Guglielmo Marconi himself to construct the Vatican Radio in 1931. The documents of the Church also offer us a theology of radio as a mass communication medium, with unity, progress and evangelisation being the fundamental aspects. Church documents posit that not everything should be broadcasted over radio but only messages which bring about peace and unity.

Opis:
The Synod of the Lutheran Church in Poland has proclaimed the year 2011-year of the Pastoral Care. That is the reason why the article focuses on the pastoral care one of the most important missions of the Protestant Church. The author shows first the place of the ecclesiological approach in current Polish theological discussion among protestants, and then discusses the subject in the light of the Symbolical Books of Lutheranism, i.e. the Book of Concordia from 1580, especially the Augsburg Confession. The understanding of the Church is one of the most important subject of the early Reformation theology, but the pastoral care is almost absent in the records of confessional books of the 16th century. The author concludes that the pastoral dimension of the Church is rather more of practical than a theoretical nature. In fact the pastoral care is a particularly challenging task of the whole Christianity.

Opis:
The subject of this article concerns the community impact of the Church within a society. This issue is primarily reviewed on a social-historic ground while taking into account the theological perspective. In the traditional model of a society, religion played an important role in integrating, organising and legislating a nation and state as well as setting the code of conduct for individuals who live within. Throughout the centuries the influence of religion on a community had taken different scopes and forms. It was transformed, i.e. weakened and reoriented, in order to satisfy individual’s needs. Nonetheless, in a society the Church (religion) remains as an abiding reservoir of national and social symbols, which serves as a criterion of moral judgments, a „provider“ of existential meaning, a source of internal motivation and support during critical situations as well as a „barrier“ of perspective concerning the ultimate destiny of mankind.

Opis:
The article is the effect of reflection upon the Church. Assuming ecclesial character of catechesis it shows the need for reflection and search of the right model of the Church. There are two models presented: institutional and communitarian. The Vatican Council II was the place and time when these two models came together. At that time institutional model based on a pyramidal hierarchy, emphasizing the legal force, closed to any kind of dialogue with the world changes into communi-tarian one. The Church is to become a real community of the people of faith yearning to get united around Jesus Christ. It is a community which is open to the dialogue with the world and culture. It is an ability to share the essence of the community: what it is, what it does and what it possesses. In the times when the majority of people are tired of the institutionalization of life, according to the recommendations of the documents of the Vatican Council II one should go towards the community where a personal encounter between God and human takes place.

Opis:
In Polish historiography study of the beginnings of the parish is continued. In connection with the study town churches (ecclesia castrensis) are said to be the oldest parishes, but constitutive features of such churches are not searched for. On the example of this kind of church in Wojnicz (southern Małopolska) the author tries to establish these features. In the conclusion he says that the town church is:1. A church built in the 10th-12th century functioning in a town that is not a ruler's residence, but exercises the monarch's power in the adjoining area.2. Canons – there are usually three of them – apart from ecclesial duties (officium dominum) do some work for the ruler (e.g. they record the people's tributes).3. The clergy participate in the ruler's income; hence their remuneration has the character of a stipend (stipendium) and its amount depends on the amount of the ruler's income.4. Within a more or less advanced reform of the Gregorian type at the break of the 11th century bishops effect a break of the ties with the ruler; however, they keep the sources of their income, which is the beginning of the tithe.5. The churches become legal entities and eo ipso they gain the right to exercise curam animarum (baptism, marriage, funeral).6. Depending on the amount of remuneration that receives the character of the benefice (beneficium), the clergy organize college chapters, or simply parishes with a greater number of priests. Churches in magnates' towns (proceres), organized on the pattern of the prince's ones, passed through an analogous process.
