Opis:
Variation in final casting dimensions is a major challenge in the investment casting industry. Additional correction operations such as die tool reworking as well as coining operations affect foundry productivity significantly. In this paper influence of basic parameters such as wax material, mould material, number of ceramic coats and feed location on the dimensional accuracy of stainless-steel casting has been investigated. Two levels of each factor were chosen for experimental study. Taguchi approach has been used to design the experiment and to identify the optimal condition of each parameter for reduced dimensional deviation. Analysis of variance has been carried out to determine the contribution of each process parameter. The result reports that selected parameters have significant effect on the dimensional variability of investment casting. Mould material is the dominant parameter with the largest contribution followed by number of ceramic coats and wax material whereas feed location is having negligible contribution.

Ultrasonically improved electrochemically generated adsorbent (UEGA) has been synthesized and used for adsorption of fluoride ions from fluoride laden waste water. UEGA was prepared in two major steps, firstly electrochemically generated adsorbent (EGA) was prepared using electrolytic method followed by ultrasonication treatment. Ultrasonication causes size reduction which leads to increase in surface area viz. active site which helps to enhance attachment of negatively charged fluoride ion on positively changed UEGA from waste water. UEGA was prepared at three different amplitude i.e. 50, 70 and 90% respectively. Taguchi optimization for defluoridation was carried out considering operating parameters such as initial concentration; contact time; adsorbent dose; and temperature. The results obtained demonstrated that adsorption showed different fluoride removal at varying frequency. This study proved that varying percentage amplitude of ultrasonication significantly affects defluoridation efficiency.

Opis:
Grain refining and modification are common foundry practice for improving properties of cast Al-Si alloys. In general, these types of treatments provide better fluidity, decreased porosity, higher yield strength and ductility. However, in practice, there are still some discrepancies on the reproducibility of the results from grain refining and effect of the refiner’s additions. Several factors include the fading effect of grain refinement and modifiers, inhomogeneous dendritic structure and non-uniform eutectic modification. In this study, standard ALCAN test was used by considering Taguchi’s experimental design techniques to evaluate grain refinement and modification efficiency. The effects of five casting parameters on the grain size have been investigated for A357 casting alloy. The results showed that the addition of the grain refiner was the most effective factor on the grain size. It was found that holding time, casting temperature, alloy type and modification with Sr were less effective over grain refinement.

Opis:
From ancient days to till today manufacturing industries, especially making of holes on the parts during drilling process for precision assembling of parts facing problems with burr formation. Drilling operation is one of the finishing operation in the production cycle, removing of burrs during drilling process is a time consuming and non-value added process to the manufacturing sector. So reducing the size of burrs is the main aim of the present study. In the present work, optimization of burr size is considered during drilling of aluminium 7075 alloy. In this connection, experiments are conducted based on Grey based Taguchi. From Grey relational grades of responses selected optimal combination of parameters to attain multiple performance characteristics of responses with a corresponding higher grey relational grade. For identifying the most significant input parameters that influence the output responses ANOVA is conducted. Based on interaction effect plots of data means of responses from results of ANOVA, confirmation tests are conducted by choosing most significant parameters. Finally, observations reveals that feed rate, point and clearance angles are the most influential factors on burr size and also experimental results divulge that the lower the thrust force causes to decrease the burr height. The proposed approach is helpful to the budding entrepreneurs in the related areas to select optimal combination of drilling parameters to attain multiple performance characteristics of responses especially in burr size to prevent the post finishing operations up to certain extent.

Opis:
The Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) welding processes one of the prevalent methods used for welding aluminum alloys. TIG welding is most commonly used due to its superiority in welding less dense materials. The most prevalent issues encountered with TIG welding aluminium alloys are porosity creation and cracking due to solidification, both of which result in lower mechanical properties. Because of the metal’s susceptibility to heat input, this occurs. The current work is the result of a desire to improve the mechanical properties of dissimilar aluminium metals: AA5052-H32 & AA5083-H111. The process parameters of TIG welding are optimized towards eliminating the previously discussed failure scenarios. Various optimization techniques exist towards obtaining optimizing processes such as Response Surface Methodology (RSM), Genetic Algorithm (GA), Artificial Neutral Network (ANN), Flower pollination algorithm, Taguchi method etc, The Taguchi method was chosen for the optimization of process parameters due to its inherent nature of solving problems of singular variance. The optimal parameters combination was determined i.e. welding current at 170 A, filler rod diameter 2.4 mm and Gas flow rate of 11 lpm. The optimized input parameter was used to TIG weld the confirmation specimen which are further investigated for mechanical and metallurgical characterizations. The parameters were optimized and the results indicate that the input current was found to be the most contributing towards improving mechanical properties over all the process parameters.

Opis:
This work depicts the effects of deep cryogenically treated high-speed steel on machining. In recent research, cryogenic treatment has been acknowledged for improving the life or performance of tool materials. Hence, tool materials such as the molybdenum-based high-speed tool steel are frequently used in the industry at present. Therefore, it is necessary to observe the tool performance in machining; the present research used medium carbon steel (AISI 1045) under dry turning based on the L9 orthogonal array. The effect of untreated and deep cryogenically treated tools on the turning of medium carbon steel is analyzed using the multi-input-multi-output fuzzy inference system with the Taguchi approach. The cutting speed, feed rate and depth of cut were the selected process parameters with an effect on surface roughness and the cutting tool edge temperature was also observed. The results reveal that surface roughness decreases and cutting tool edge temperature increases on increasing the cutting speed. This is followed by the feed rate and depth of cut. The deep cryogenically treated tool caused a reduction in surface roughness of about 11% while the cutting tool edge temperature reduction was about 23.76% higher than for an untreated tool. It was thus proved that the deep cryogenically treated tool achieved better performance on selected levels of the turning parameters.

Opis:
This research work is focused on examining the turning behavior of Incoloy 800H superalloy by varying important cutting parameters. Incoloy 800H is an Iron-Nickel-Chromium based superalloy; it can withstand high temperature (810°C), high oxidization and corrosion resistance. But, it is difficult to turn in conventional machines and hence the present work was carried out and investigated. Experiments were conducted based on the standard L27 orthogonal array using uncoated tungsten inserts. The cutting force components, namely, feed force (Fx), thrust force (Fy) and cutting force (Fz); surface roughness (Ra) and specific cutting pressure (SCPR) were measured as responses and optimized using Taguchi-Grey approach. The main effects plots and analysis of mean (ANOM) were performed to check the effect of turning parameters and their significance on responses of cutting forces in all the direction (FX, FY, FZ), the surface roughness (Ra) and specific cutting pressure (SCPR). The tool wear and machined surfaces were also investigated using white light interferometer and SEM.

This study aimed to determine the optimal process parameters of needle-punched nonwoven fabrics, and obtain the maximal strength of needle-punched nonwoven fabrics. The Taguchi approach and grey relational analysis were used to solve the multi-quality optimisation problem and determine the optimal process parameter combination of needlepunched nonwoven fabrics. The L9 orthogonal array was used to design parameters that affect the needle-punched nonwoven fabric process, including the folding machine oscillating speed, folding machine conveying speed, needle-punch depth, and needle-punch density. Then grey relational analysis was used to overcome the single quality characteristic disadvantage of the Taguchi approach, and the optimal process parameter combination of multiple quality characteristics was obtained from the response graph of the analysis. The quality characteristics of this experiment are the nonwoven fabric tearing strength and tensile strength. Signal-to-noise ratios (S/N ratio) were calculated and an analysis of variance (ANOVA) was conducted to analyse the experiment results. The results of ANOVA showed that the factors with a significant effect on the quality characteristics of needlepunched nonwoven fabrics included the needle-punch depth and needle-punch density. In other words, by controlling these factors the quality characteristics of the needle-punched nonwoven fabrics could be controlled effectively. Finally, the 95% confidence interval of the verification experiment proved that this experiment was reliable and reproducible

Flank wear of multilayer coated carbide (TiN/TiCN/Al2O3/TiN) insert in dry hard turning is studied. Machining under wet condition is also performed and flank wear is measured. A novel micro-channel is devised in the insert to deliver the cutting fluid directly at the tool-chip interface. Lower levels of cutting parameters yield the minimum flank wear which is significantly affected by cutting speed and feed rate. In comparison to dry and wet machining, insert with micro-channel reduces the flank wear by 48.87% and 3.04% respectively. The tool with micro-channel provides saving of about 87.5% in the consumption of volume of cutting fluid and energy.

Bioremediation is the removal of heavy-metals such as nickel (Ni) using microorganisms and has been considered as an important field in the biotechnology. Isolation and characterization of microorganisms exhibiting bioremediation activities and their optimization to treat polluted wastewaters is a vital and difficult task in remediation technologies. In this study, investigation was carried out to isolate Ni (II) remediating microbial strains from soils contaminated with municipal solid waste leachate. Furthermore, Taguchi design of experiments were used to evaluate the influence of concentration, pH, temperature, and time on bioremediation of Ni (II) using isolated bacteria. This study concluded that Bacillus sp. KL1 is a Ni (II)-resistant strain and had Ni (II) bioremediation activity. The highest bioremediation of Ni (II) was observed as 55.06% after 24 h at 30ºC, pH 7, and 100 ppm concentration. Moreover, it was also observed that concentration is the most effective factor in the bioremediation process. In conclusion, we have demonstrated that bacteria isolated from soils contaminated with garbage leachate have the Bacillus sp. KL1 bacteria which can efficiently uptake and eliminate Ni (II) from contaminated sites and thus makes it possible to treat heavy-metal containing wastewaters in industry by using this microorganism at optimized conditions.

Opis:
Purpose: The present work aims to investigate the effect of many infill patterns (rectilinear, line, grid, triangles, cubic, concentric, honeycomb, 3D honeycomb) and the infill density on the mechanical tensile strength of an Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS) test specimen manufactured numerically by FDM. Design/methodology/approach: Computer-Aided Design (CAD) software has been used to model the geometry and the mesostructure of the test specimens in a fully automatic manner from a G-code file by using a script. Then, a Numerical Design of Experiments (NDoE) has been carried out by using Taguchi method and the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The tensile behaviour of these numerical test specimens has been studied by the Finite Element Analysis (FEA). Findings: The FEA results showed that a maximal Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS) was reached by using the ‘concentric’ infill pattern combined with an infill density of 30%. The results also show that the infill pattern and the infill density are significant factors. Research limitations/implications: The low infill densities of 20% and 30% that have already been used in many previous studies, we have also applied it in order to reduce the time of the simulations. Indeed, with high infill density, the simulations take a very excessive time. In an ongoing study, we predicted higher percentages. Practical implications: This study provided an important modelling tool for the design and manufacture of functional parts and helps the FDM practitioners and engineers to manufacture strong and lightweight FDM parts by choosing the optimal process parameters. Originality/value: This study elucidated the effect of various infill patterns on the tensile properties of the test specimens and applied for the first time a NDoE using numerical test specimens created by the mesostructured approach, which considerably minimized the cost of the experiments while obtaining an error of 6.8% between the numerical and the experimental values of the UTS.

Opis:
The dry sliding wear behavior of heat-treated super duplex stainless steel AISI 2507 was examined by taking pin-on-disc type of wear-test rig. Independent parameters, namely applied load, sliding distance, and sliding speed, influence mainly the wear rate of super duplex stainless steel. The said material was heat treated to a temperature of 850°C for 1 hour followed by water quenching. The heat treatment was carried out to precipitate the secondary sigma phase formation. Experiments were conducted to study the influence of independent parameters set at three factor levels using the L27 orthogonal array of the Taguchi experimental design on the wear rate. Statistical significance of both individual and combined factor effects was determined for specific wear rate. Surface plots were drawn to explain the behavior of independent variables on the measured wear rate. Statistically, the models were validated using the analysis of variance test. Multiple non-linear regression equations were derived for wear rate expressed as non-linear functions of independent variables. Further, the prediction accuracy of the developed regression equation was tested with the actual experiments. The independent parameters responsible for the desired minimum wear rate were determined by using the desirability function approach. The worn-out surface characteristics obtained for the minimum wear rate was examined using the scanning electron microscope. The desired smooth surface was obtained for the determined optimal condition by desirability function approach.

The Mahalanobis-Taguchi System (MTS) is, today, widely used to define the optimal conditions for the design stage of product development especially, in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI) considering the non-linear properties and non-digital data. In this paper, an approach to identify the several interactions in a MTS is proposed. The MTS contains four methods; Mahalanobis-Taguchi (MT) method, Mahalanobis Taguchi Adjoint (MTA) method, Recognition Taguchi (RT) method and Taguchi (T) method. The method to use for the analysis is selected based on the system’s properties. For the case of study used in this research, the unit space is created through the RT method and used to calculate the Mahalanobis-Taguchi distances (MTD). For the method proposed in this paper, the relationships between control factors and MTDs were firstly clarified by MTS (RT), then the same relationships were clarified using a modified design of experiments method, and the several interactions between control factors in MTS (RT) were finally identified by comparing the two relationships. Then effectiveness of the proposed method was evaluated by using a mathematical model.
