The combining ability effects of five silkworm (Bombyx mori L.) strains and their 20 F₁'s including reciprocals were analysed in a 5x5 diallel cross for seven silk yield attributes, viz. effective rate of rearing (ERR), a measure of survival, cocoon yield, cocoon weight, shell weight, raw silk percentage, silk filament length/cocoon and silk reelability. Higher values of specific combining ability (SCA) than the corresponding general combining ability (GCA) for all the attributes except ERR and cocoon yield are indicative of non-additive gene action. The parental strain JC2P was the best general combiner for all the attributes, except cocoon yield. The highest general combining ability effect for cocoon yield was shown by N4. The highest desirable or positive SCA effects resulted from N4 × SH2 (all the attributes except shell weight), JC2P × 14M (all the attributes except cocoon weight and shell weight), 14M × SH2 (all the attributes except ERR), N4 × SPJ1 (all the attributes except shell weight and raw silk percentage). Only one reciprocal, namely SPJ1 × N4, showed positive effects for all the attributes except silk reelability. The improvement of cocoon yield through mass selection followed by intermating and the use of the parental strain JC2P in future cross breeding are discussed.

In the paper impression from annual Open House event organized by the worlds' leading machine tools manufacturer DMG MORI in its headquarter I Pfronten were presented. The relation indicates the trends that the company implements in its production, as well as those that it sets itself. On the ground of observations it can be clearly stated that DMG MORI machine-tools represent the world's highest level of constructional solutions.

The resulting two-point irregular boundary value problem is solved by the pseudospectral Chebyshev method that converts the boundary value problem to the system of equations, which can be solved by any appropriate decomposition method. Benchmark solutions are used to validate the method. The effect of the arbitrarily chosen volume fraction index is demonstrated for stress and displacement distributions. The effective stresses for different inner radius and volume fraction index are also discussed.

Pinellia ternata agglutinin (PTA) is highly homologous to many other monocot mannose-binding lectins which reportedly possess antitumor activities. Its production in silkworm cells has great application potential because the baculovirus expression system can produce post-translationally modified proteins at low cost. In the current study, the pta gene was cloned and expressed in silkworm cells, and the expressed protein was analyzed using a hemagglutination assay. A preliminary in vitro study on its anti-proliferative activity was performed. The results show that the recombinant PTA with an apparent molecular mass of 29 kDa can hemagglutinate rabbit erythrocytes and this activity can be inhibited by D-mannan at a low concentration. In addition, the recombinant hemagglutinin exhibited a dose-dependent anti-proliferative activity on hepatoma cells. The results of the current study suggest that PTA and other important bioactive proteins could be produced by silkworm bioreactor for biomedicine research and application.

Bombyx mori. L. (CSR2XCSR4) is a bivolitne crossbreed that produces high quantity of silk. The weights of worms and glands are directly related to the yield of silk, higher larval weights leads to higher silk production. In the present study, quantitative parameters of 5th instar and pupal stages of silkworm larvae were observed. The analysis of quantitative estimation showed that the maximum weights and lengths of silk gland and silk worm were recorded on 7th day of 5th instar larval stage. The day dependent variation in protein concentration was observed in total silk gland 5th instar larval and pupal stages.

In this work, stress analysis of a polymeric cylinder’s cylindrical shell reinforced with carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is investigated. The cylinder is subjected to mechanical and thermal loadings. All the equivalent mechanical and thermal properties of nano-composite cylinder are obtained using Mori-Tanaka model. Based on equilibrium, the governing equation is derived. Using an exact solution, the stresses and radial displacement distributions in the structure are calculated. The effects of CNTs volume percent on the stresses and radial displacement for internal and external pressure cylinder are the main discussion of this study. Numerical results indicate that with increasing CNTs volume percent, the stresses decrease. However, this shows the important effect of nanotechnology in stress reduction of cylinder which may be useful in sensors and actuators.

Magnetism of borides which contain the $B_{12}$ icosahedra as a structural building block are attracting increasing interest since they exhibit unexpectedly strong magnetic interactions, despite being magnetically dilute f-electron insulators. The magnetic behavior among the different compounds has also been found to be diverse. The f-electron dependence of magnetic B_{12} icosahedra borides is compared, and found to be different from conventional mechanisms. The $TbB_{25}$ system is also investigated further and the transition is assigned to a typical antiferromagnetic transition.

Eschatological issues became the primary part of the17th century funeral orations. Such situation was influenced by the parenetic character of this source as well as high mortality of people in the Baroque era, caused by wars, natural calamities and disastrous hygienic conditions. The perception of female and male death at that time was different. Male death was considered to be heroic, meritorious and – most of all – public and thus worthy of presentation in culture. Female death, however, usually took place in the privacy of home, during a hard childbirth or as a result of illness, and thus was considered to be common, not worthy of public view. In the Baroque era, the model of good death became popular. It presumed an acceptance of the transient nature of life and preparation for death’s arrival by reading ars bene moriendi manuals. Good death was also awaited through listening to sermons of thanatological subjects, contemplating pictures depicting death scenes and monthly or annual “trainings” in dying. Special devotional services in which the members of religious confraternities participated were popular at that time. Charity and mercy towards both the living and the dead were also valued. Moreover, good death in old Poland was understood as natural death preceded by suffering and illnesses, as they allowed for the completion of all earthly issues and parting with family. The sacraments (of penance, Holy Communion and holy oils), which the moribund received for his last journey, began to play a very important role at that time. The perusal of funeral sermons leads to a conclusion that thoughts about death and life beyond the grave accompanied the people of the Baroque era almost all the time. Because of that, people strove to lead a pious and virtuous life and apologize to God for bad deeds, in order to deserve eternal life in heaven.

Recently, there are various methods to incorporate additional properties into silkworm silk, during its production in the silk gland itself. These advanced properties involve additional mechanical strength, colour, ultraviolet resistance, etc. and it is utilized for a wide range of applications. The property which focused in this study is the colour, an important quality attribute of silk. Effect of neutral red, a vital dye used as dietary supplement and its nutritional effects on Bombyx mori (B. mori) along with the colour manipulating efficiency on the larvae were observed. The colour change noticed from larval to cocoon stage confirms its efficiency to get into the silk gland of the animal crossing through the integument and haemolymph. The results of the observed nutritional parameters confirms that the selected dye in the selected concentration is suitable to produce colour cocoons without disturbing the nutritional traits such as ingesta, digesta, approximate digestibility percentage, growth rate, efficiency conversion rate, etc. of the larva. The findings elucidates that more vital dyes may use for the production of colour silk without causing any harm to the silkworm physiology. As the dye has no harmful effect in the dietary parameters, which plays a major role in the growth of the larva and production of silk, it is assumed that it may not affect the economical and biochemical parameters also. However, it has to be confirmed by further analyses.

Serpins are a broadly distributed family of protease inhibitors. In this study, the gene encoding Bombyx mori serpin-2 (Bmserpin-2) was cloned and expressed in E. coli. The Bmserpin-2 cDNA contains a 1125 bp open reading frame (ORF). The deduced protein has 374 amino-acid residues, contains a conserved SERPIN domain and shares extensive homology with other invertebrate serpins. RT-PCR analysis showed that Bmserpin-2 was expressed in all developmental stages of B. mori larvae and various larval tissues. Subcellular localization analysis indicated that Bmserpin-2 protein was located in the cytoplasm. Interestingly, real-time quantitative PCR revealed that the expression of Bmserpin-2 in the midgut of susceptible B. mori strain 306 significantly increased at 72 hours post inoculation (hpi) when infected with BmNPV. However, there was no significant increase of the Bmserpin-2 expression in resistant strain NB infected with BmNPV. Thus, our data indicates that Bmserpin-2 may be involved in B. mori antiviral response.

Opis:
Calorie restriction (CR) is known to extend life span from yeast to mammals. To gain an insight into the effects of CR on growth and development of the silkworm Bombyx mori at protein level, we employed comparative proteomic approach to investigate proteomic differences of hemolymph and fat body of the silkworm larvae subjected to CR. Thirty-nine differentially expressed proteins were identified by MALDI TOF/TOF MS. Among them, 19 were from the hemolymph and 20 from the fat body. The hemolymph of the CR group contained two down-regulated and 17 up-regulated proteins, whereas the fat body contained 15 down-regulated and five up-regulated ones. These proteins belonged to those functioning in immune system, in signal transduction and apoptosis, in regulation of growth and development, and in energy metabolism. Our results suggest that CR can alter the expression of proteins related to the above four aspects, implying that these proteins may regulate life span of the silkworm through CR.
