Opis:
Autogenous laser welding of 5.0 mm thick butt joints of thermomechanically rolled steel S700MC was investigated. The Yb:YAG disk laser TruDisk 3302 emitted at 1.03 μm was used for the trials of autogenous welding. The effect of laser welding parameters and thus thermal conditions of welding on weld shape, microstructure of weld metal and heat affected zone (HAZ), tensile strength, bending angle, impact toughness and microhardness profile was determined. Studies have shown that it is advantageous to provide a high welding speed and low heat input. High cooling rate of weld metal and HAZ leads to the formation of a favorable structure characterized by a large proportion of fine-grained acicular ferrite and provides high mechanical properties of butt joints.
Duże szybkości stygnięcia metalu spoiny i SWC prowadzą do utworzenia korzystnej drobnoziarnistej struktury o dużym udziale ferrytu drobno płytkowego, co zapewnia wysokie właściwości mechaniczne złączy doczołowych.

Opis:
The article presents the results of a comparative study of the nitriding process of titanium alloy substrate using two lasers with different characteristics of laser beams. One of the applied lasers was a high power diode laser emitting at a dominant wavelength of 808 nm, with a rectangular laser beam spot, and multimode energy distribution across the spot. The second laser was a solid state Yb:YAG disk laser emitting at a wavelength of 1.03 μm, with a circular beam spot, characterized by near Gaussian energy distribution across the spot. In a case of both lasers single stringer beads with a similar width and at similar energy input were produced. As a result of melting of the substrate with a laser beam in a pure gaseous nitrogen atmosphere composite surface layers with in situ precipitated titanium nitrides embedded in the metallic matrix of titanium alloy were produced, in both cases. However, the surface topography and structure is different for the surface layers produce by different lasers at the same processing parameters and width of laser beams.

The autogenous laser welding of 2.5 mm thick butt joints of thermomechanically rolled fine-grain steel grade S420MC was investigated. Butt joints were laser welded by the Yb:YAG Disk laser, emitted a circular laser beam with spot diameter of 200 μm at 1.03 μm wavelength, and also by the high power direct diode laser, emitted a rectangular beam with dimension of 1.8x6.8 mm at 808 nm wavelength. Different welding modes were identified for the lasers applied. The conduction welding mode was observed in whole of the diode laser welding parameters. While high quality joints, without any internal defects and characterized with satisfactory mechanical performance were produced in a wide range of parameters. The butt joints produced by Disk laser were welded at keyhole mode. In this case a slight tendency to weld porosity was found.

Opis:
In order to improve the tribological properties of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V composite surface layers Ti/TiN were produced during laser surface gas nitriding by means of a novel high power direct diode laser with unique characteristics of the laser beam and a rectangular beam spot. Microstructure, surface topography and microhardness distribution across the surface layers were analyzed. Ball-on-disk tests were performed to evaluate and compare the wear and friction characteristics of surface layers nitrided at different process parameters, base metal of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V and also the commercially pure titanium. Results showed that under dry sliding condition the commercially pure titanium samples have the highest coefficient of friction about 0.45, compared to 0.36 of titanium alloy Ti6Al4V and 0.1-0.13 in a case of the laser gas nitrided surface layers. The volume loss of Ti6Al4V samples under such conditions is twice lower than in a case of pure titanium. On the other hand the composite surface layer characterized by the highest wear resistance showed almost 21 times lower volume loss during the ball-on-disk test, compared to Ti6Al4V samples.

Opis:
Purpose: of this paper was to analyze the influence of the basic parameters of laser welding (i.e. laser beam power and welding speed, as well as energy input) of butt joints of the 2.0 mm thick stainless steel AISI 304 sheets on the weld shape and joint quality. Design/methodology/approach: The preliminary trials of simulated laser welding by melting the austenitic stainless steel sheets (the so called bead-on-plate welding), as well as the welding of the test butt joints, were carried out using the high-power diode laser (HPDL) ROFIN DL 020, without the additional material (the technique of autogenous welding). A crucial parameter that determines both the mechanical properties and the corrosive resistance of a joint (the region of a weld and HAZ - heat affected zone) in the case of stainless steels with austenitic structure is energy input, which should be kept at a minimum, and at the same time full penetration and a proper shape of the fusion zone should be ensured. The investigations included the macrostructure and microstructure observations by light microscopy, researches of mechanical properties in a static tensile test and also microhardness measurements made by Vickers method. Findings: The results have shown that it is possible to provide a proper shape of the weld of fine-grained structure and narrow heat affected zone, but it requires careful selection of the welding parameters, especially a low energy input. The microhardness measurements showed that the in case of welding the butt joints using the high-power diode laser in HAZ area a slight increase in microhardness to approx. 185HV0.2 compared to base material (160-169HV0.2) and a decrease in microhardness in the fusion zone (FZ) to approx. 140- 150HV0.2 have been observed. All welded sample broke from the joint during the testing at tensile stress between 585 MPa and 605 MPa with corresponding percentage elongation in the range of 45-57%. It can be found that the joints strength is not less than the strength of the base metal of 2.0 mm thick AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel sheet. Research limitations/implications: Studies of the weldability of stainless steels indicate that the basic influence on the quality of welded joints and reduction of thermal distortions has the heat input of welding, moreover the highest quality of welded joints of austenitic stainless steel sheets are ensured only by laser welding. Practical implications: The laser welding technology can be directly applied for welding of austenitic steel AISI 304 sheets 2.0 mm thick. Originality/value: Application of high power diode laser for welding of austenitic stainless steel AISI 304.

Opis:
The automated laser welding process of 2.0 mm thick sheets of AISI 304 stainless steel was investigated. The disk laser with a beam spot diameter of 200 μm was used for bead-on-plate and next for autogenous butt joints welding. The influence of basic welding parameters such as laser power, welding speed, and focal spot position on fusion zone configuration, quality of joints, microstructure changes, and microhardness distribution across the joints were analysed and presented in this paper. The results have shown that stiffening of the 2.0 mm thick sheets is crucial for providing high quality and reproducibility of butt joint in a case of AISI 304 stainless steel due to relatively low thermal conductivity and simultaneously high thermal expansion. Relevant drop of microhardness in the weld zone was observed. The mean value of microhardness of the base metal was 230 HV0.1, while the microhardness in fusion zone of the test welds was ranged from 130 to 170 HV0.1. Additionally the microstructure changes in the weld metal and also in the heat affected zone of test joints is described.

Opis:
Purpose: of this paper was demonstration a novel technique of laser cladding by experimentally composed Co-based metallic powder and forced cooling of the substrate by liquid nitrogen under cryogenic conditions, at the temperature -190°C, for producing clad layers with enhanced microstructure characteristic and properties. Design/methodology/approach: Technological tests of laser cladding were conducted by means of a high power fibre laser HPFL with maximum output power 3.0 kW, and six-axis robot. The experimental Co-based powder was composed for providing high abrasive wear resistance, high resistance for impact load, and also for corrosion resistance at elevated temperature. The unique and novel technique of forced cooling of the substrate was provided by immersing the specimens in the liquid nitrogen bath. The three coaxial nozzle head was designed and custom made to provide precise deposition of the powder delivered into the laser beam irradiation region. The scope of the study included tests of conventional laser cladding at free cooling in ambient air in a wide range of processing parameters, and also trials of laser cladding under cryogenic conditions. The test clad layers produced by conventional laser cladding and by the novel technique of laser powder deposition under cryogenic conditions were investigated and compared. Findings: The obtained results indicate that the novel technique of forced cooling the substrate by liquid nitrogen bath provides lower penetration depth, as well as low dilution of the clad, and also provides higher hardness of the clads. Additionally, it is possible shaping the geometry of the individual bead, providing high reinforcement and low width. Research limitations/implications: The presented results are based just on preliminary test of the novel technique of laser cladding under cryogenic conditions. Therefore, further study and detailed analyse of the influence of the cooling rate on the quality, microstructure, and properties of the deposited coatings are required. Practical implications: The study is focused on practical application of the novel technique for manufacturing of wear resistance coatings characterised with enhanced performance compared to conventional range of application of the laser cladding. Originality/value: Novel technique of laser cladding at forced cooling under cryogenic conditions was demonstrated. The powder used for cladding trials was experimentally composed (not commercially available). The experimental stand custom made was used with custom made powder feeding rate, and also with custom made coaxial nozzle head.

The article presents results of investigations on autogenous laser welding of new grade STRENX 1100 MC steel. The modern Disk laser was applied for of 5.0 mm thick butt joints welding. The influence of laser welding parameters, mainly the energy input of laser welding on the penetration shape, weld quality, structure and mechanical performance was investigated. It was found that the investigated steel has surprisingly low carbon equivalent CET just 0.328, and also relatively high temperature of martensitic transformation Ms at 430.6°C. Despite very rapid cooling times t8/5 in a range from 0.6 to 1.3 s, thus rapid solidification there was no tendency to cracking of weld metal or HAZ. Significant drop of microhardness in the HAZ resulted in a decrease of tensile strength of joints, compared to the base metal. Impact toughness of test joints was at only 50÷60% of the base metal.
