    Opis:
    In the springtime of 2005, 16 blackberry cultivars were planted in the Experimental Pomological Orchard in Skierniewice. They included the new blackberry cultivars: ‘Black Butte’, ‘Boysenberry’, ‘Chester’, ‘Helen’, ‘Karaka Black’, ‘Kotata’, ‘Loganberry’, ‘Loch Ness’, ‘Loch Tay’, ‘Oregon’, ‘Silvan’, ‘Tayberry’, Tayberry Buckingham’ and ‘Tummel’. The new cultivars were compared with two standard blackberry varieties ‘Orkan’ and ‘Black Satin’. In the course of the experiment the varieties were tested in the climatic conditions of central Poland, with special attention paid to yield and fruit quality. All the varieties except ‘Tayberry Buckingham’ were found very promising; the plants, however, have to be protected from frosts typical during Polish winters. The highest yields were recorded for ‘Chester’, ‘Loch Ness’ and ‘Loch Tay’. The largest fruits were produced by ‘Black Butte’. Although the Rubus hybrids: ‘Boysenberry’, ‘Loganberry’, ‘Tayberry’ and ‘Tummel’ are marked by low yields, they are interesting due to their original taste and fruit colour.

    Opis:
    The experiment was conducted at the Experimental Fruit - Growing Station in Samotwór, belonging to the Wroc ł aw University of Environmental and Life Sciences. The aim of the study was to determine the extent of damage to the shoots and flower buds of peach trees after the winter of 2009/2010, when the temperature fell to - 24 to - 26 o C. Under evaluation were six - year - old trees of the cultivars ‘Redhaven’ and ‘Inka’ grown at a spacing depending on the type of canopy: 4 x 3 m (open vase), 4 x 1 m (vertical axis), and five - year - old trees of ‘Suncrest’ and ‘Cresthaven’ grown at 3.5 x 1 m (vertical axis), 3.75 x 2 m (spindle), and 4.25 x 3 m (open vase). The degree of damage to one - year - old shoots was estimated by using a five - point scale according to Ho ł ubowicz’s test. Flower buds were dissected and divided into two groups (healthy and damaged). The shoots under assessment came from the top and bottom part of the crown. The trees were of different heights, depending on the form of the crown. The highest trees were trained in the form of a vertical axis and the lowest as an open vase. The temperature of - 24 o C did not cause large differences in the degree of damage to the shoots of ‘Inka’ and ‘Redhaven’ trees in relation to the type of crown. Only in the case of ‘Redhaven’ trees, greater damage to lower shoots was noted in the open vase system in comparison with vertical axis. Following the - 26 o C frost, the crown form was found to have no effect on the extent of damage to t he lower shoots of 'Suncrest' and 'Cresthaven' peach trees. Only in the case of the shoots at the top of the tree, more serious damage was found in 'Cresthaven' trees shaped as an open vase. Irrespective of the crown shape, the low temperatures had caused severe damage to flower buds in the lower part of the crown. In the upper part of the crown, considerably fewer damaged buds were found in the taller trees shaped as a vertical axis in comparison with the shorter ones shaped as an open vase.

    Opis:
    The resistance to frost and winter conditions is a very important aspect of plant and rose cultivation in the Polish climate. The number of new cultivars from around the world available in Polish nurseries is constantly on the increase. The collection of roses in the Botanical Garden of PAS was founded in 1998. There are more than six hundred and ninety taxa and culta of all groups of garden roses. This paper describes the evaluation of the condition of three hundred and sixty eight cultivars from different groups (hybrid teas, floribundas, polyanthas, shrubs, miniatures, climbers and ramblers) after the long, cold and snowy winter of 2009/2010. These were from the Botanical Garden’s collection budded on various rootstocks or those growing on their own roots (two cultivars only). All the shrubs were covered for the winter. In spring 2010 injuries and winter frost damage to the shrubs were observed according to the scale of frost damage to deciduous plants by Łukasiewicz (1992) and height of damage above ground level. At the first moment of flowering observations were made on the height of shrubs and the valuation of flowering according to a fixed scale. All damaged shrubs were evaluated according to the Łukasiewicz scale from 4 (one-year-old shoot tips frozen) to 7 (shoots frozen to the ground but new shoots produced from the undamaged part of the plant) and several cultivars to 10 (the entire plant frozen). Shrub roses, ramblers and climbers over-wintered quite well. The most severe damage was to hybrid teas, floribundas and miniatures. Most of them were cut to ground level. Climbers and ramblers flowering on two-year-old shoots suffered the heaviest loss of ornamental value. For ninety four cultivars from different groups the frost damage didn’t have any negative impact on their ornamental qualities during the vegetative season.

    Detailed measurements of the frost crack width were made in selected trees during two subsequent winter seasons. Also frost ribs were measured. Such individual approach to generally known phenomenon of frost cracks enables its better understanding.
