Aim. The aim of this paper is to present the results of a pilot validation of an artificial intelligence chatbot for mathematics tutoring. The subject of the analysis is the behaviour of the students in the course, in particular their approach to solving problems without external motivation through scoring or other assessment. Methods. The analysis of student behaviour was carried out on the basis of records in the application database. The subject of the analysis was not only the pupils' responses, but also the time taken to produce them and the overall trajectory through the course. Results. The results of the analysis show that students who choose to join the course, work intensively in the lessons. Most pupils solve more than one basic task. A significant proportion of pupils also use the prepared help and instructional videos. The analysis of the solution time allowed identification of a group of pupils who do not even read the problems and only confirm the results. Conclusion. The pilot validation confirmed that the chat-bot format is close to the learners, and they are able to use the courses created in this environment. Solution time analysis suggests that this parameter can be used to analyse learner behaviour and system control. Further analyses in this area are needed.

This paper refers to construction methods of Supervisory Control and Diagnostic Systems (SCDS) based on a CAN bus. Emphasis is put on the construction of such systems. Meeting real time constraints has become one of major aspects of this elaboration. The study enumerates possibilities of using various communication mechanisms of CAN, applicable for real-time systems. Proposed solutions are especially suitable for general-purpose SCDS. Principles of real-time analysis for CAN bus based systems are discussed as well. An example of SCDS implementation for a Swiss Light Source (SLS) large scale accelerator project is given. Time analysis is made for the constructed system with real-time conditions met. Experiments performed in the SLS confirm the results of the analysis.

Supply chain can be considered as a series of linked inventories. This paper considers the impact of inventory on the economics of the businesses and the whole chain and discusses causes of inefficiency. In most supply chains the goods are inactive for the majority of the time, and this leads to longer term and therefore less accurate forecasting. The result is typically excess inventory, shortages, and inflexibility. By analysing the wasted time and costs in the supply chain, a clearer view of the whole process can be created. Total supply time can be considered as three components, namely value added time, non-value added process time, and waste time. This basic approach shows where improvements should be focussed. Using this time-based measurement enables more relevant comparison between supply chains than the normal supply chain efficiency ratio.

Opis:
This paper deals with a condition-based maintenance strategy (CBM) in finite-time horizon for a system subject to two different causes of failure, internal degradation and sudden shocks. Internal degradation is modelled under a gamma process and sudden shocks arrive at the system following a non-homogeneous Poisson process (NHPP). Both causes of failure are considered as dependent. When a sudden shock takes places, the system fails. In addition, the system is regarded to fail when the deterioration level reaches a critical threshold. Under this functioning scheme, a CBM strategy is developed for controlling the reliability of the system. Traditionally, this strategy is developed under an asymptotic approach. Hence, considering an infinite-time horizon is not always possible. In this paper, we analyse a CBM strategy under a finite-time horizon developing a recursive method which estimates the expected cost rate based on numerical integration and Monte Carlo simulation. A numerical example is provided in order to illustrate this complex maintenance model.

In this paper a novel method of the bearing estimation in a passive sonar system with a towed array is introduced. The classical approach of the bearing estimation based on the spatial spectrum is extended by using the synchrosqeezing method that is a part of the reassignment method introduced by Kodera et al. The usage of this method leads to the precise bearing estimation. The proposed method requires a relatively small amount of computation, because of possibility of using the FFT algorithm. Moreover, method immunity against AWGN is tested for a selected sonar array having regard to the direction of arrival and the signal frequency.

Effectively optimizing dilation and erosion is an extensively studied but not completely resolved problem. In this paper, a new optimization algorithm is proposed to improve the efficiency of dilation and erosion. Four notions are given to define the edges for any simply connected structuring element (SE). An assistant algorithm is proposed to detect these edges. Based on these notions, three iteration equations can be derived, which redefine dilation and erosion as iteration calculation. Time complexity of the new algorithm is reduced to O(n³). In addition, the new algorithm is suitable for online applications without the decomposition of SE. Simulation shows that with the same parameters, the performance of the new algorithm is better than that of Yang's algorithm.

Opis:
Accession of Poland to the European Union meant that its eastern border became the external frontier of the Community. The next step in the European integration was joining the Schengen Zone by Poland. Polish citizens may freely travel throughout the Schengen Zone and the state was obliged to tighten its eastern border. Under these circumstances conducting research on passenger traffic has become a vital issue, with particular focus on the eastern frontier. In the article an attempt is made at examining the possibility of forecasting passenger traffic on the example of border crossing points between the Subcarpathian Province and Ukraine using the ARIMA models. Confirmation of these possibilities seems to be crucial as the number of people crossing the border is characterized by high variability and sensitivity to the political situation. The study is based on the information provided by the Polish Border Guard. The conducted time series analysis is of a multi-purpose character. It may be used to support decision making processes of investment, organizational, as well as socio-political nature.

The paper discusses a simple looking but highly nonlinear regime-switching, self-excited threshold model for hourly electricity prices in continuous and discrete time. The regime structure of the model is linked to organizational features of the market. In continuous time, the model can include spikes without using jumps, by defining stochastic orbits. In passing from continuous time to discrete time, the stochastic orbits survive discretization and can be identified again as spikes. A calibration technique suitable for the discrete version of this model, which does not need deseasonalization or spike filtering, is developed, tested and applied to market data. The discussion of the properties of the model uses phase-space analysis, an approach uncommon in econometrics.

Opis:
One of the main goals in times series analysis is to forecast future values. Many forecasting methods have been developed and the most successful are based on the concept of exponential smoothing, based on the principle of obtaining forecasts as weighted combinations of past observations. Classical procedures to obtain forecast intervals assume a known distribution for the error process, what is not true in many situations. A bootstrap methodology can be used to compute distribution free forecast intervals. First an adequately chosen model is fitted to the data series. Afterwards, and inspired on sieve bootstrap, an AR(p) is used to filter the series of the random component, under the stationarity hypothesis. The centered residuals are then resampled and the initial series is reconstructed. This methodology will be used to obtain forecasting intervals and for treating missing data, which often appear in a real time series. An automatic procedure was developed in R language and will be applied in simulation studies as well as in real examples.

Opis:
A traditional frequency analysis is not appropriate for observation of properties of non-stationary signals. This stems from the fact that the time resolution is not defined in the Fourier spectrum. Thus, there is a need for methods implementing joint time-frequency analysis (t/f) algorithms. Practical aspects of some representative methods of time-frequency analysis, including Short Time Fourier Transform, Gabor Transform, Wigner-Ville Transform and Cone-Shaped Transform are described in this paper. Unfortunately, there is no correlation between the width of the time-frequency window and its frequency content in the t/f analysis. This property is not valid in the case of a wavelet transform. A wavelet is a wave-like oscillation, which forms its own “wavelet window”. Compression of the wavelet narrows the window, and vice versa. Individual wavelet functions are well localized in time and simultaneously in scale (the equivalent of frequency). The wavelet analysis owes its effectiveness to the pyramid algorithm described by Mallat, which enables fast decomposition of a signal into wavelet components.
